Ifab plan concussion substitute trials and ‘philosophical’ review of offside law

• Review could result in a root-and-branch reform of offside law • Infantino: ‘Fostering attacking football always has to guide us’ Football’s lawmaking body is to undertake a “philosophical” review of the offside law, which could result in a root-and-branch reform of one of the game’s most controversial rules. The year-long piece of work was part of a number of initiatives announced at the International Football Association Board’s annual general meeting, which was held in Belfast on Saturday. Partly inspired by the advent of VAR, and further pushed along by the way the rules of video refereeing have been pushed into sharp focus since its adoption by the Premier League, the aim of the research is to move the offside law further towards encouraging attacking football. Jarrod Bowen shines to give West Ham crucial win over Southampton

Anyone who thinks that protest will have an adverse effect on West Ham’s efforts to stay in the Premier League should probably pipe down now. Far from affecting performances on the pitch, the atmosphere generated by the biggest demonstration yet against David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady seemed to bring the best out of David Moyes’s side, who rose to the challenge by climbing out of the bottom three with an emphatic victory over Southampton. This was a rare good day for West Ham, up to 16th after their first league win since 1 January. They will surely not go down if they maintain this level, even though they have played one game more than 18th-placed Aston Villa. Marcos Alonso double snatches Chelsea point from Bournemouth

This was hardly the emphatic response Frank Lampard had hoped for but Marcos Alonso rescued a point for Chelsea on their return to action. Chelsea, bruised from a night of torment against Bayern Munich in midweek, fell behind to goals from Jefferson Lerma and Joshua King in three remarkable second-half minutes but Alonso ensured Chelsea did not leave empty-handed. Chelsea have been depleted by injuries of late, with Tammy Abraham limping out of the warm-down on Tuesday, but Alonso struck twice to help hold on to fourth place for another week at least. Bayern fans’ offensive Hopp banners cause farcical finish at Hoffenheim

Bayern moved four points clear at the top of the table overnight but the match was at risk of being cut short in the 77th minute after Bayern fans displayed the banner insulting the Hoffenheim investor Dietmar Hopp. The Bayern players and club bosses walked towards the stands and urged their fans to take the banner down. Dwight Gayle fails audition as Newcastle draw blank again against Burnley

Fears of catching coronavirus have prompted Newcastle to ban their players from shaking hands with each other but arguably the biggest danger facing Steve Bruce’s side is the lack of on-field connectivity which has heightened the risk of relegation on Tyneside. If he is playing it safe off the pitch, Bruce knew the time to gamble on it had arrived. Accordingly for the first time since September Newcastle’s manager deprived his players of the security blanket represented by Rafa-ball – namely the 3-4-3 system installed by his predecessor, Rafael Benítez – and reconfigured them into a new look 4-2-3-1 system. Jordan Ayew strikes for Crystal Palace to keep Brighton in the mire

These are worrying times for Graham Potter. The Brighton manager watched his side suffer the ignominy of a first home defeat in the top flight at the hands of their bitter rivals that leaves them still waiting to record a victory in 2020. Jordan Ayew’s seventh Premier League goal of the campaign was enough to record victory for Crystal Palace as they gained sweet revenge for losing twice against these opponents last season. The defeat left Brighton four points clear of the bottom three ahead of Saturday’s afternoon fixtures but after the promise shown in the first half of the season under their new manager, it looks like being another spring filled with anxiety on the south coast. They remain the only side in England’s top four divisions not to have won a game this year, with five draws to show from their eight Premier League outings. Kevin De Bruyne at the heart of new era emerging at Manchester City

Pep Guardiola is in the process of a mid-season rebuilding work as he seeks a third successive Carabao Cup against Aston Villa Welcome to Kevin De Bruyne’s Manchester City. This was the deafening message sent by the Belgian in a midweek dismantling of Real Madrid that will have Aston Villa wondering how to shackle him when he tries to drive City to a third successive Carabao Cup on Sunday. Operating as a false 9, De Bruyne’s performance in the Champions League last-16 first leg ranked as a career highlight. Indispensable Jack Grealish offers hope for Villa against City machine | Jonathan Liew

Admired by Pep Guardiola and coveted by Manchester United, can this season’s revelation drag his hometown club to an unlikely Carabao Cup triumph on Sunday? This week the last man to lead Aston Villa to major silverware met the man who hopes to be the next. These days Andy Townsend is better known as a pundit and broadcaster, but when he sat down with Jack Grealish, it was he who ended up fielding the questions. Grealish may barely have been born when Townsend captained Villa to victory in the 1996 League Cup final, but as a lifelong Villa fan he has watched all the tapes and knows his history. And as the current Villa captain, there was one thing he wanted to ask Townsend above all: what it felt like to lift the trophy. 'We are making history': Beckham's Inter Miami brace for MLS liftoff

The former England captain’s new MLS club will take the field for the first time on Saturday after six years of uncertainty, but out-of-the-box success could prove hard to come by When David Beckham’s Inter Miami take to the field at the Banc of California stadium on Saturday night, six arduous years of crippling uncertainty will melt away. The former England captain never thought it would be like this, yet the Miami political landscape is far trickier to beat than a well positioned defensive wall with a curling free-kick, something the 44-year-old did so wonderfully during his stellar playing days. The exodus never materialised but Sunday’s return is opportunity to demonstrate that, with Bruno Fernandes making an immediate impact and United unbeaten in seven matches in all competitions, lessons have been learned and progress is being made. Defeat at Arsenal last Sunday delivered a reminder of Everton’s shortcomings and confirmed Carlo Ancelotti was right to ignore the hype about Champions League qualification. Premier League and Carabao Cup: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Villa try to break Manchester City’s League Cup stranglehold, Vardy needs a goal and Moyes must rouse Hammers Since he scored 14 goals in 12 league games between late September and 21 December, in which he failed to find the net in only two matches (one of them against Norwich), someone has turned off Jamie Vardy’s scoring tap. In that free-scoring period there seemed to be no stopping him: he may not have been on the scoresheet against the Canaries , for example, but he played excellently and threatened constantly, and it was his (off-target) header from James Maddison’s corner that Tim Krul flapped into his own net for the equaliser in a 1-1 draw. But since Christmas he has not scored at all, and in six league games this calendar year he has had only eight shots – 50% of them against Manchester City last weekend – and only four on target, the most recent against Chelsea on 1 February, 235 pitch minutes ago. Brendan Rodgers’ priority must be to turn that tap back on. SB Continue re

Youssef El Arabi’s goal, a minute from the end of extra time, put the Greek Super League leaders through and it came just moments after Arsenal thought they had won the game themselves. There is something shifting at Real Madrid, some sense of vulnerability | Sid Lowe

Pep Guardiola was right to say if there is any team that can turn the deficit around it is Madrid, but that old belief is starting to look like it may need revising Sergio Ramos walked off the pitch and, many imagined, straight out of Europe. “If there is any team, anywhere in the world that can turn this around it is Real Madrid,” Pep Guardiola said. But as the Real fans departed the Bernabéu, leaving their stadium to the Manchester City supporters singing Blue Moon high in the north-east corner, it did not feel like it. Without their captain, shown the 26th red card of his career at the end of those final 15 minutes that Zinedine Zidane said had been fatal, turning around this 2-1 home defeat will be harder yet. The forgotten story of ... Manchester City flouting finance rules in 1906

A punch thrown in 1905 culminated in 17 City players and four directors being banned over the club’s illegal overspending In May 2019, with Manchester City facing several investigations including one by Uefa regarding the alleged breaching of financial fair play regulations, the Guardian reported remarks made by the club’s chairman, Khaldoon Mubarak. “With success there is a certain level of jealousy, envy, whatever you call it,” he said. Almost two weeks ago, when Uefa announced that its investigation had found City guilty, the club released a statement describing the process as “flawed”. “With the prejudicial process now over,” they said, “the club will pursue an impartial judgment as quickly as possible.” In August 1905, after City’s Billy Meredith had been found guilty of bribery following a Football Association investigation, the Guardian reported remarks made by the forward. “League officials, he asserts, are jealous of the [club’s] growing success,” we wrote, “but he thought

Lewandowski in same class as Messi and Ronaldo, claims Bayern's Alaba

Bayern striker may be the world’s best, says teammate ‘We showed we are back,’ Alaba declares after win at Chelsea Robert Lewandowski should be bracketed alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in any conversation about the world’s best forwards, according to David Alaba, who saw his teammate comprehensively outmanoeuvre Chelsea in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge . Bayern ran riot in the second half, Lewandowski applying the final blow by converting a cross from the electric Alphonso Davies. But the two assists he had supplied for Serge Gnabry, the first a particularly unselfish lay-off when he could have been excused going for goal, showed another side to his game. Alaba said the 31-year-old, who has scored 39 times for Bayern in all competitions this season, belonged in the most exalted company. Invincible Zidane faces ‘hour of truth’ against his old friend Guardiola

Real Madrid’s manager has never lost a Champions League knockout tie but Manchester City’s rarely loses at the Bernabéu “I’m not going to tell you what he told me,” Zinedine Zidane said smiling broadly, a glint in his eye, “but it was very, very interesting.” Whatever it was, it worked. Football transfer rumours: Chelsea to offer Kepa plus £25m for Jan Oblak?

Today’s tittle-tattle likes the ambition of it Get the right keeper in at the right age and you’ve got the position sorted for a decade, so goes the logic. Chelsea struck gold when they upgraded Carlo Cudicini for Petr Cech in 2004, and the 11 years’ service they got from him took in four Premier League titles, one Champions League win, one in the Europa League, plus four FA Cups and three League Cups. Thibaut Courtois may have toddled off a little early for their liking, after just the four major trophies including two league winners’ medals, but bringing in Kepa Arrizabalaga for well over £70m showed full intent to repeat the trick. Foreign stars, $325m fees and an eye on Mexico: MLS approaches Season 25

Many wondered if the league could survive in the crowded North American sports market. Instead it has grown, and closer ties with Mexico could be next This is a story about MLS that begins not at the stadium where the Houston Dynamo will host the Los Angeles Galaxy as the league’s 25th season kicks off on Saturday, but in a converted warehouse across the street. Here, in a low-slung brick building, former USA and Dynamo striker Brian Ching opened a bar in 2018 that features industrial-chic exposed ductwork, and, more surprisingly, an indoor football pitch. Impatient Bayern find keys to unlock Chelsea as Hansi Flick restores old fire

The caretaker manager has restored the famous Bayern press, and they relentlessly hunted down Frank Lampard’s side Bayern Munich may not have all the answers, but they know all the right questions. They can finish you in more ways than almost any other team on the planet. You play through the press and they smother you with possession. You lock the front gate and they find a way around the side. You sit deep and they weave their dainty triangles around you. You commit high and they make you turn and run. Thwart their slick passing game for one half, and they simply take you to pieces in the next. This, essentially, is what happened to Chelsea here: after maintaining a stony silence for 50 minutes in the face of a relentless interrogation, they eventually squealed like piglets. If Serge Gnabry’s two goals in three minutes did not quite settle matters, Robert Lewandowski’s third goal probably did, even if Marcos Alonso’s late red card and consequent suspension offered Chelsea a glimme

Occasionally I have been asked on to a podcast or television show where it is tacitly explained that some sort of opinion on VAR will be required and I have just about managed to feign the required outrage. It’s quite easy, once you practise a bit: just tick off as many of the following words and phrases as possible – “Stockley Park”, “Mike Riley”, “not what the technology was brought in for”, “armpit”, “killing the emotion” – while gradually winding your voice into ever tighter coils of fury. To recap that moment: Lavelle, socks pulled up above her knees, received the ball from Sam Mewis just across the halfway line, saw an ocean of space, and ran at the Dutch defense. Orange shirts backed off and then backed off some more and then backed off again, until Lavelle shot from the edge of the penalty area. Boom - the US were 2-0 up and the deal was sealed. Liverpool’s 21st consecutive home win equals English record ‘We all know that it is very special,’ says manager Klopp Jürgen Klopp hailed Liverpool’s record-breaking campaign as “special” and “incredible” after the unbeaten Premier League leaders took another step towards the title with a 3-2 comeback victory over West Ham. It was a 21st consecutive home league win for Liverpool –equalling the all-time English record set by their predecessors in 1972 and setting a new Premier League record – and an 18th successive league win that equalled the top-flight record set by Manchester City. How Real Sociedad thrashed a third-division team 8-0 but won their hearts | Sid Lowe

A December Copa del Rey thrashing for Club Deportivo Becerril ended with an open invite for their fans to visit the Reale Arena. At the weekend, two-thirds of a small town took them up on it At the end of training on Friday night, the players from Club Deportivo Becerril packed everything away and headed straight home. It was quarter past 10 and they had to be up early the next morning. Not long after 7.30am they were back, boarding the bus heading north, a four-hour journey ahead. One of the buses, that is. They had a game, but this time it wasn’t theirs. Instead, they were going to San Sebastián, singing songs all the way there, and the whole town was going with them. For once that’s not much of an exaggeration, either: there are 754 people in Becerril de Campos, a tiny, previously unremarkable town in the province of Palencia; on Saturday, 502 of them set off and didn’t come back until after dark, happy as they had ever been. It had been the perfect day. No sangria in the park but

The “updated Heading Guidance”, drawn up in conjunction with Uefa’s medical committee, states that children between the ages of 6 and 11 should no longer be allowed to head the ball during training sessions. A “graduated approach” will be taken to children between the ages of 12 and 16, but there will be no limit applied to heading in matches for any age group. Bayern Munich threaten to fluff lines with minds occupied by Chelsea tie | Andy Brassell

An indifferent victory over Paderborn raised the stakes for Hansi Flick, with a run in Europe potentially key to the interim manager keeping the job It’ll be alright on the night, they hope. With such a tight race at the top of the Bundesliga, there shouldn’t really have been time for a Bayern Munich dress rehearsal as they get set to restart their Champions League campaign. Yet what they served up on Friday night’s game against Paderborn felt suspiciously like one. There were plenty of fluffed lines. Bayern conceded not one but two improbable equalisers to visitors who were in the third tier the season before last, and whose annual playing budget is so small that nine first-teamers at the Allianz Arena each earn more than Paderborn’s entire squad put together. In the absences of Benjamin Pavard and Jérôme Boateng, the hosts experimented with three at the back but as Süddeutsche Zeitung’s Tim Brack pointed out, Manuel Neuer simply laughed wryly when asked if the plan might be revisi

Premier League: talking points from the weekend’s action

Burnley discover depth up front, Manchester City take care of business and Southampton unearth a potential gem Mikel Arteta is entitled to be pleased with three wins in eight days, but must also reflect on the sloppiness which gifted Everton two goals. Though Arteta said that in the first 65 minutes they played exactly as he wants them to, the reality is that Arsenal flowed for perhaps half that time, hanging on to the points not because of any great discipline and organisation; their opponents just finished poorly and Bernd Leno had a good second half. And Leno’s response, when asked about his mistake which led to Everton’s equaliser, was telling: Richarlison, its scorer, was “lucky”; he, its unwitting victim, was “unlucky”; and it didn’t matter in the end, because Arsenal won. This is not how winners think, and this is the mentality Arteta must change, but if he is as delighted with his team’s performance as he intimated, he would do well to re-evaluate his own too. But they are now 10 games unbeaten, with three straight wins, and the head coach’s celebration at the end showed exactly what this meant: it is not improbable that they are now European contenders again. There are few certainties in football, but a nailed-on bet presented itself here: anything on offer would surely be an improvement on the dire goalless draw these sides contested four days after Christmas, both stuck in suspended animation while their newly-appointed managers watched from the Goodis

Cadbury teams up with Manchester United to tackle loneliness in older people

Fans are encouraged to speak to older people at match against Watford in Age UK campaign There was a striking change with tradition at Manchester United’s match against Watford on Sunday as 11 elderly “guests of honour” replaced the customary child mascots before the kick-off, stepping out and shaking hands with the first team on the Old Trafford ground. The estimated 75,000 people attending the match at the so-called “Theatre of Dreams” were also shown messages about loneliness beamed on to the ground’s video walls, with related content in the matchday programme. Manchester City and Chelsea share points after six-goal WSL thriller

If ever there was an advert for the quality of the Women’s Super League, this was it. In a gut-busting end-to-end encounter between league leaders Manchester City and an unbeaten Chelsea, in which Georgia Stanway bagged the league’s 2000th goal, every ounce of fight was expended by the players on the Academy stadium pitch. Goals pounded in one after the other with the pace of heavyweight fists and a draw, and a deserved sharing of the spoils, was the right result. Victory would have handed either side the advantage in a tight title race, instead the draw means City remain top, one point clear of Chelsea, who have a game in hand, while Arsenal sit a further three points adrift. Rangers slip up again as Celtic surge further clear at the top

St Johnstone grab point in 2-2 draw with Rangers Celtic come from behind to beat Kilmarnock 3-1 Rangers dropped another two Premiership points after the St Johnstone striker Stevie May scored a late equaliser in Perth. Celtic’s 3-1 win at home to Kilmarnock later extended their lead at the top to 12 points. Callum Hendry had given Saints an early lead but – after coming from two down to beat Braga in midweek – Steven Gerrard’s side launched another comeback. The half-time substitute Florian Kamberi scored a tremendous equaliser before setting up Joe Aribo to put the visitors ahead, but May levelled after an 80th-minute corner to secure a 2-2 draw. May’s goal made it 10 points Rangers have dropped in eight matches since returning from the winter break. Bruno Fernandes opens Manchester United account in win over Watford

After a dour start this became the Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes show. Each have the quality Manchester United require if a challenge for a Champions League berth is to be mounted, this win lifting them two places up to fifth in this quest. Both scored while showing their team-mates how to turn a contest United’s way. In the closing stages Mason Greenwood caught on, starting and finishing a move for an 11th of the 18-year-old’s breakthrough season, the final pass to him coming – inevitably – from Fernandes. Diogo Jota double seals easy win for Wolves over Norwich

This was far too easy for Wolves, so easy in fact that it somewhat beggared belief. Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad have been playing twice a week for as long as Boris Johnson has been prime minister. Someone should be buying them a break in Mustique by now, but still they plow on and had too much strength, too much pace (never mind technique and guile), for a Norwich City side so desperate for points at the bottom of the division. Two goals for Diogo Jota, following a Europa league hat-trick in midweek, were complemented by a second half effort from Raúl Jiménez, his 12th league goal of a sparkling campaign. But it could and should have been more, perhaps many more, and the gulf between the two teams on the day – only a week after Norwich held their own against champions-elect Liverpool – was as great as you are likely to see this season. Arsenal v Everton: Premier League – live!

Premier League updates from the 4.30pm GMT kick-off Saka is reluctantly making a big impression at the back And feel free to email Daniel or tweet him @DanielHarris 3.53pm GMT The question, though, is whether Schneiderlin and Delph spend their afternoon chugging about – ok, that bit isn’t a question – as Ceballos and Ozil dance between them. I’d not be at all surprised to see that in the second half, but if Everton can get in amongst them early on, I’d be equally unsurprised to see Everton score first. 3.49pm GMT It’ll be interesting to see how Arsenal’s fabled defence deals with Everton’s strikers. Richarlison has the raw materials to develop into a serious player – I’m not surprised Barca were interested in him, nor that Everton knocked them back, because where are they getting anyone even nearly as good? If Sigurdsson and Iwobi can get him enough of the ball, he can give Luiz and Mustafi plenty, and that’s even before we consider that he’s got Calvert-Lewin next to him.

European football roundup: Lazio hold off Genoa to keep pace in Serie A

Immobile on target as Lazio claim 3-2 win at Genoa Four Serie A games cancelled due to coronavirus Serie A’s leading scorer Ciro Immobile grabbed his 27th league goal of the season as irrepressible Lazio won 3-2 at Genoa on Sunday to stay on the tail of leaders Juventus. Lazio needed less than two minutes to go ahead when Adam Marusic powered through the Genoa defence to score. Immobile added the second from Felipe Caicedo’s flick in the 51st minute before Francesco Cassata pulled one back. Manchester City v Chelsea: Women's Super League – live!

Women’s Super League updates from the 2pm GMT kick-off Old Trafford picked to stage opening of Women’s Euro 2021 And feel free to email Daniel or tweet him @DanielHarris 12.18pm GMT This is a colossal, monumental, gargantuan piece of fixture. As things stand, City sit top of the table and have won their last six league games; but that run started after defeat as Chelsea, who are a point behind them with a game in hand, having won their last nine matches in all competitions. And that’s not all, because just two points behind them are Arsenal, last season’s champions and Chelsea’s opponents in next weekend’s WSL Cup final. Which is to say that the standard at the top of the WSL is extremely ridiculous, which is to say that it’s extremely difficult to guess – and it will be a guess – what will happen when the best teams play. Both City and Chelsea have been brilliant at the back and devastating in attack, City slightly better at the former and Chelsea significantly better at the l

A year after 10 Flamengo players died in a fire, their families still seek justice

Ten teenagers died at Flamengo’s training ground last year. The club has still not agreed compensation with all of their families By Joshua Law for Yellow & Green Football Simone Souza stood outside Flamengo’s training ground, hoping to be let in. She just wanted to go into the car park, light a candle and say a prayer. A year before, on the night of 8 February 2019, her 15-year-old nephew Jorge Eduardo and nine of his friends were burned to death in that very spot when a fire engulfed the makeshift dormitories the club had used to house their youth team. On the day of the anniversary, the Flamengo players and coaching staff paid their own tribute to the boys at the training ground. Simone merely wished to do the same. But her request was denied. Security barred her and the relatives of another victim, forcing them to kneel in prayer at the side of the road. This stunningly insensitive decision – “humiliating” was the word Souza used – has been met with widespread criticism in

'I didn't know where to run': Chelsea's Champions League win over Bayern revisited

Players from both sides recall the dramatic events that ended with Didier Drogba’s winning penalty in the shootout When Chelsea take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16, first leg on Tuesday it will recall their meeting in the 2012 final , the most glorious night in their history. It had not been an easy season for Chelsea , who had made Roberto Di Matteo caretaker manager after sacking André Villas-Boas in February, and few gave them a chance of winning their first European Cup, even after they beat Barcelona in a remarkable semi‑final . As they approached the game with Bayern the pain of losing the 2008 final to Manchester United on penalties weighed heavily.
