Premier League 2022-23 fan previews, part one: Arsenal to Leeds

Fans have their say on key players, wonderkids and weak links – and make predictions for the season ahead Part two: Leicester to Wolves Gabriel Jesus’s appetite for goals pre-season has been voracious – I’m struggling to contain my excitement. So is he the the real McCoy? From what I saw of him at City I wasn’t convinced he was our 20+ goals solution, but I’m fast becoming a believer. ‘It shows them they’re not alone’: inside the UK’s first refugee football team

Changing Lives FC has lived up to the promise of its name, offering much-needed support to refugees and migrants ‘Every one of these boys has a story,” says Fethi Ahmed as he looks across the parched playing surface of a recreation ground in Harlow. “But for two hours on a Thursday they can forget everything, whatever their difficulties. They count down the days to this. Everyone here knows they have football to keep them going.” Ahmed knows better than anyone how Changing Lives FC, the first team in the UK to comprise entirely of refugees and migrants, has helped to do what its name promises. It has been there for him since he arrived on these shores after a terrifying journey from Egypt six years ago, when he was just 16; it has been a crutch through even darker times, which led to a suicide attempt in 2019. He is the team’s captain: a well-known and respected figure in the community who others now turn to. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian

Premier League 2022-23 fan previews, part two: Leicester to Wolves

Fans have their say on key players, wonderkids and weak links – and make predictions for the season ahead Part one: Arsenal to Leeds Am I optimistic? Yes and no. Brendan Rodgers promised a rebuild in the window, but so far we haven’t made a single signing. The big boost comes in the reduction of players currently sidelined, and the bittersweet absence of European football this season. Hopefully, we can tread water at least. ‘A few Lionesses will get everything’: the pay gap in women’s football

Lucy Bronze has deals with Nike and Visa but second-tier club players in England make do with £21,000 a year Last month, football agent Jo Tongue arranged for a female player to transfer to a second-tier English side, only for the club to offer her a full-time salary of £21,000 – less than many male Premier League players earn in a week. Even this is an improvement on where the sport used to be. For Tongue, one of the biggest triumphs of England’s run to the Euro 2022 final has been that companies no longer ask her players to make corporate appearances for free: “I had got very used to hearing ‘There’s no fee.’ That’s the main change.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/jul/30/england-womens-football-pay-gap-lionesses

Battle for the Golden Boot: Mead and Popp have dual goals in their sights

The two forwards are level on six goals each and either could secure the accolade of being the tournament’s top scorer as well as leading their nation to victory at Wembley Sunday’s Women’s European Championship final doesn’t need any hyping up. England, Germany, at Wembley, in what has become the biggest women’s football tournament of all time – the reasons for excitement are plain. But there is one further factor that shouldn’t be neglected: a shootout for the Golden Boot. Beth Mead of England and Germany’s Alexandra Popp go into the final with six goals each in the tournament. Headers, howitzers, placed finishes and poaches, they have found every type of way to hit the net. Wolfsburg’s Popp has scored in every match, a record for the championship, while Mead has done so against every team bar Spain. Both have also shown real leadership when their teams have needed it. Now one has the chance to steal the accolade of tournament top scorer from the other. Continue reading... from

Popp spearheads Germany’s force but glimpses of hope for England | Nick Ames

The 31-year-old striker is making up for lost time after injuries and joint top scorer could complete the fairytale at Wembley Two minutes before the hour, with France starting to suggest they had finally got Germany’s measure, their substitute Selma Bacha was sent sprinting clear down the inside-left channel. Her decision to shoot early as the ball held up outside the penalty area seemed questionable but was quickly explained: she had seen Alexandra Popp, in effect the last German defender, making up ground in her rear view mirror and could do little as, from nowhere, the hurtling No 11 successfully threw herself towards the shot. Popp had prevented a potential goal and here was the kicker: 13 seconds previously, in an almost identical position at the other end of the pitch, it was her slightly loose pass that had let France break. She had bust a gut to get back and save the day, just as she put everything on the line to power a thrilling winner past Pauline Peyraud-Magnin 14 minut

No angst, no heartache but full of risk: this is an England team like no other | Jonathan Liew

The Euro 2022 final will be the biggest moment of their lives but the Lionesses have the chance to turn old vices into new virtues It was rampant, it was dominant, it was refined and frankly - to anyone remotely conversant in the argot of English football – it was just a little bit weird. England, the host nation, have swept into the final of Euro 2022, schooling and subduing the world’s No 2-ranked nation Sweden in a 4-0 rout at Bramall Lane . No angst, no stage fright, no bitter heartache. Just fluid, expressive one-touch football and the sort of goals you score in your dreams. Quick, check their passports. England expects : for so long this inflated expectation has felt like a lead weight on this team, freighting their every step with meaning, setting them up for inevitable failure. England’s women have never won a major tournament in their history. On Sunday evening, at a sold-out Wembley Stadium, against either Germany or France, they will get the chance to turn old vices into n

Uncertainty clouds Erik ten Hag’s pre-season at Manchester United

Manager facing headaches over the form of Harry Maguire and David de Gea, Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence and the De Jong transfer saga A fortnight watching United’s new manager, Erik ten Hag, leading training has revealed an intelligent man whose priority is to coach. The Dutchman’s emerging side play in free-flowing style and he has a sharp manner with the media. These are the absolute base materials for any manager to succeed at a club that remain the country’s record title holders but became a laughing stock last season. United’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in Perth on Saturday night was the first failure to win in four tour matches in Thailand and Australia, fixtures in which United plundered 13 goals while conceding three times with a still-suspect defence. As Ten Hag knows, this is the phoney war. The real stuff starts when Brighton come to Old Trafford on 7 August before a trip to Brentford and the visit of Liverpool: two wins and a draw from those three games would be a fine start.

England should resist calls to start new sensation Alessia Russo against Sweden | Anita Asante

Clamour for the young Manchester United striker to replace Ellen White in the Euros semi-final is misplaced despite her huge talent Maybe it’s a symptom of the impatient world we inhabit but, whenever a young talent emerges, there seems an almost inevitable clamour for this new star to start every game. In England’s case that is now applying to Alessia Russo after the Manchester United striker’s impressive performances as a substitute during England’s first four Euro 2022 games. Russo scored a goal against Norway and two against Northern Ireland after coming off the bench. Crucially, she also played a key role in creating her fellow substitute Ella Toone’s late equaliser in the quarter-final against Spain. Final whistle for the ‘pink ’un’: British football’s last-surviving matchday newspaper closes

After 119 years, Portsmouth’s Saturday evening Sports Mail has printed its last issue. A dedicated reader bids this singular British institution a fond farewell It’s been the slowest of deaths, but yesterday the “Saturday final” edition of a singular British institution will be just that. While in the last 20 years beloved pink ’uns and green ’uns (and the occasional blue ’un and buff ’un) have disappeared from towns and cities across the country, Portsmouth’s Saturday evening Sports Mail , 119 years old, held out as the last remaining dedicated matchday newspaper. It was first closed down in 2012 but quickly resurrected at the impassioned demand of fans of Pompey, the island city’s club. This time, the obituary is to be believed. With it goes a century of a particular collective memory: that Saturday evening ritual of heading up to the local newsagent at 5.30 or 5.45 to await the mundane miracle of a stack of fat papers slung from the back of a van reporting from all across the city

‘The best football brain’: England’s Keira Walsh is here to play

England’s no-nonsense holding midfielder prefers to avoid the limelight and do her talking on the pitch Keira Walsh looks slightly embarrassed, uneasy even, whenever London’s National Gallery is mentioned. As part of an advertising campaign designed to coincide with Euro 2022, a giant image of England’s playmaker has recently been projected on to that landmark’s facade at nightfall, illuminating the building. Given that Walsh is so often the three-dimensional player who switches the lights on for England it seems throughly appropriate that the installation is accompanied by the messages “You’ve never seen an artist like this” and “She uses the pitch as a canvas for some of the most striking footwork”. Manchester United frustrated as Aston Villa’s Calum Chambers grabs draw

Manchester United 2-2 Aston Villa Sancho 25, Cash 42og; Bailey 50, Chambers 90 Manchester United appeared to be ending their two-week summer tour of Thailand and Australia with victory and a perfect record of four wins from four before David de Gea went missing at an added-time corner and Calum Chambers crashed home the equaliser for Aston Villa in Perth. If this rightly delighted Steven Gerrard, their manager, Erik ten Hag can also be pleased with a return of three wins, a draw, 13 goals scored and three conceded. United’s new manager will detest the way De Gea and the defence did not wish to claim the ball more than Chambers but this was a stark reminder that the side’s rebuild has a long way to go. England’s gritty win against Spain bodes well for Euro 2022 chances | Karen Carney

Having dug deep for their quarter-final victory, the Lionesses are better equipped to win the tournament England winning all three group games with an aggregate score of 14-0 might have given the impression that tournament football is straightforward, but the quarter-final victory over Spain showed it is far from that. England had to work extremely hard to stay in the game and needed to change tactics to get the better of their opponents, which will be beneficial going into the semis and, hopefully, final. There is no doubt Spain are the best team England have played and offered a very different challenge from those in the victories over Austria , Norway and Northern Ireland . England needed to put into practice a different gameplan to deal with life without the ball. I thought at times they might be playing within themselves and that doubt was creeping in, but they just grew stronger and stronger as a group as the game went on. Stanway stunner fires England into semis after extra time win over Spain

The party was almost over but then Ella Toone turned up and the whole place went wild again. I haven’t experienced that too much. We know Spain are a very good team, especially in possession. We did pretty well too.” After a tense first half ended level, Spain capitalised on their domination of the ball to open the scoring in the 54th minute through Esther González. Football transfer rumours: Spurs to continue spree with Roma’s Zaniolo?

Today’s fluff is shouting at the clouds If there’s one thing for which Paris Saint-Germain are famous, it’s the achingly sincere lovingkindness of their owners. As such, when it manifests, we can be inspired but not surprised, and their generous offer to Manchester City, of Neymar in exchange for Bernardo Silva , is shockingly benevolent even for them. Amazingly, though, City spurned this largesse, opting to retain a midfielder entering his peak years and whose skill, intelligence and work ethic underpin so much of what they do, rather than take on an over-the-hill prima donna disinclined to take instruction but attached to colossal wages. But that’s ingratitude for you. There is, however, interest in Presnel Kimpembe , PSG’s centre-back. For reasons unclear to anyone but them, Chelsea would like to buy him for £50m, but though Paris wouldn’t mind getting shot, the player is happy at his boyhood club and keen to remain so. Could changing Lucy Bronze’s role be gold for England’s Euro 2022 chances?

With Sarina Wiegman still searching for a true No 8, a move back into midfield for the right-back could be the solution In Pythagorean numerology the number eight represents victory, prosperity and an ability to overcome adversity. Given such associations it seems appropriate that players deployed in the box‑to‑box central midfield role known as the No 8 position often hold the key to winning football matches. The bad news for Sarina Wiegman is that, immensely impressive as her England team have looked during their canter towards the Euro 2022 quarter-finals , their principal potential weak link is sited alongside the Lionesses’s midfield anchor, Keira Walsh. In other words, Wiegman lacks a suitable Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard equivalent. Brilliant and unreadable Fran Kirby locks herself into England team | Jonathan Liew

Kirby stands alone as the tournament’s primary creative force with England facing a tougher assignment in the quarter-finals As the old maxim goes, there are no easy games at this level of international football. And yet, and yet. Five years ago, Sarina Wiegman’s Dutch side scored 13 goals on their way to winning Euro 2017. Now Wiegman’s England side have matched that in their past two games, converting what looked and felt like a dangerously tight Group A into a sort of gleeful joyride. Here Northern Ireland were the latest team to step into England’s headlights and palpably regret the experience. The scoreline certainly suggested a strong degree of comfort. The number of chances – 27 shots in total – suggested that with a little luck England might conceivably have surpassed their 8-0 demolition of Norway. But there was still plenty to be learned here, not least during an opening 40 minutes during which England fleetingly had a scrap on their hands. Continue reading... from Footb

Football transfer rumours: Tottenham to sign Barcelona’s Memphis Depay?

Today’s fluff is sat in ice Seeing as Barcelona need to rid themselves of a few earners after splashing the cash on Robert Lewandowski et al, Memphis Depay could be sacrificed. Spurs are considering opening their chequebook and sign off a fee to the tune of £14m for the Dutchman, although the forward is not keen to leave the Camp Nou. Supposedly Brentford’s Ivan Toney is being eyed by Newcastle , West Ham and Leeds , not to mention Manchester United who are keeping a mere half an eye on the striker. He scored 12 goals in the Premier League last season which has enticed a few clubs who are looking for a reliable striker. Revealed: two members of Paris final ‘independent’ review worked for Uefa

Daniel Ribeiro and Luis Silva have had roles for governing body Independence of review’s chairman has also been questioned The two Portuguese professionals appointed to work with the chairman of Uefa’s “independent review” into the chaos at the Champions League final have both worked extensively for Uefa, raising further serious concerns about the review’s independence. Daniel Ribeiro and Luis Silva were announced on 1 July by Uefa, which said that the Portuguese politician appointed to chair the review, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, would be “administratively supported” by them in Lisbon. How Beth Mead went from fringe player to pride of the Lionesses

The Arsenal forward’s astonishing run of goals has England fans dreaming of glory at Women’s Euro 2022 After another clinical display from England at the Women’s Euro 2022 on Friday night, beating Northern Ireland 5-0 in Southampton , two of the crowd chants stuck in the mind. The first related to the Lionesses winger who has now scored five goals in three matches, and went to the tune of Gala’s 1997 hit Freed from Desire. “Beth Mead’s on fire,” fans sang. “Your defence is terrified! Na-na-na!” The other song, less original, will be familiar to England supporters over the past 26 years: “It’s coming home! It’s coming home! It’s coming … Football’s coming home!” The Lionesses, like the men’s team, have historically underperformed in major tournaments, but at this summer’s home Euros there is genuine, realistic optimism that this time will be different. In three games so far, England have scored 14 goals, conceded none. The next test of Sarina Wiegman’s squad is the quarter-final in Br

We begin with him walking into the training ground flanked by an entourage of three. He gets a half-hearted welcome from Ivan Perisic and we’re into the physio room for his medical. Is this his real medical or his show medical? A man checks his legs can bend at the knee and goes full shipping forecast, “45 internal, approaching 90 external”. It cuts away before he presumably continues: “Low, Hebrides 9 9 4, moving rapidly south-east.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2022/jul/16/theres-no-trophy-for-winning-the-transfer-window-so-why-the-endless-hype

Football transfer rumours: Chelsea to move for Robert Lewandowski?

Today’s fluff is feeling the heat We begin this morning with a rumour that’s barely a rumour: Raphinha ’s move from Leeds to Barcelona is nearly done, the fee £49m potentially rising to £57m. This will disappoint both Arsenal and Chelsea, who were interested in the player and, if Bayern Munich are to be believed, potentially disappoint Leeds too, given their belief that the Catalan club are so skint they might not exist in a year or two. Football is the winner. On which subject Chelsea are, apparently, trying to muscle in on Barça’s bid to sign Robert Lewandowski . Though the player originally had eyes for the Camp Nou alone, he is now sufficiently aggravated by the selfishness suffusing the German champs that even the prospect of a 493rd consecutive Bundesliga title cannot persuade him to remain in Bavaria. She’s aggressive, hungry and resilient, so England must be wary of Ada Hegerberg | Anita Asante

The Lionesses face their toughest group game against Norway whose striker is looking to make up for lost time We will have a better perception of England’s Euro 2022 chances after they have played Norway on Monday night. I believe the depth of talent in Sarina Wiegman’s squad will be enough to reach the final but this is their toughest group game. If they are to frustrate Ada Hegerberg and the rest of a Norway team adept at playing between the lines, England’s defenders must be solid and remain in constant communication. Their focus at set pieces needs to be 100%. A lot of people ask if I’m envious of England’s players and regret being retired but my overriding emotions are happiness and pride at seeing how far women’s football has progressed. The scale of this tournament is something many of us in the game have worked towards for a long time. Even so, as happy as I am to be watching, I’d have really enjoyed marking a striker as good as Hegerberg. Continue reading... from Football

Brentford’s bold Ben Ryan move a rare football push to learn from rugby

A job that began with Ryan going unpaid and stumping up for petrol in the bus to take the team to training ended with an extraordinary victory in Rio de Janeiro, after which he told of plans to unwind by playing golf and watching Brentford, where he has long been a season‑ticket holder. Arteta gives Gabriel Jesus spotlight to transform Arsenal’s upward ambition

Brazilian blew Nürnberg away in a second-half blitz as he showed the time may be right for him to become a leading man It took 85 seconds for Gabriel Jesus to offer a convincing precis of what Mikel Arteta had sought above all else in this transfer window. Arsenal were 2-0 down in Friday’s friendly at Nürnberg and while that was hardly anything to get worked up about, their manager was entitled to expect a half-time change of gear. Within moments of his introduction Jesus had seized on loose control from a defender, found a tramline through which to surge towards the box, played a one-two with Eddie Nketiah and scored off the inside of the near post from a tight angle. Prepare to fail: the transfer survival plan for new Premier League teams

Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest must take care in the transfer market as relegation remains most likely fate To this day Tony Khan thinks Fulham had a good transfer window in the summer of 2018. Which is sweet. The untrained eye might be tempted to regard the £100m spent on Jean Michaël Seri, André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, Alfie Mawson, Andre Schürrle and at least half a dozen others as one of the great spending failures of the modern Premier League era. Particularly when you consider what happened next: relegation with 26 points , three separate managers and a full-blown fistfight between Aleksandar Mitrovic and Aboubakar Kamara that apparently began during meditation in a team yoga session. For Khan, the investment made in 2018 – which also included Mitrovic and Joe Bryan, who scored the winning goal in the 2020 playoff final – was a key reason Fulham were back in the Premier League two years later. “We spent on the future,” he said. “I am very happy with the players I boug

Manchester City and United are also interested, and Bayern could demand as much as £50m for a player about to enter the final year of his contract. Another Bayern player who could be England-bound is Omar Richards . The English left-back, who moved to the Allianz Arena from Reading a year ago, is on the radar of Nottingham Forest , who’ve been busy as they prepare for their first Premier League campaign of this century. Steve Cooper’s side are also confident of sealing a deal for Liverpool’s Neco Williams by the weekend for a fee of around £16m plus add-ons. As a girl I dreamed about covering women’s football. Now it is a reality | Sophie Downey

From a low-key Euros to the Lionesses at World Cups, writing about women’s football has come on a lot in the past 20 years Welcome to Moving the Goalposts, the Guardian’s new (and free) women’s football newsletter. Here’s an extract from this week’s edition. To receive the full version once a week, just pop your email in below: It has been a long journey but here we are, in 2022, with a Women’s European Championship about to start in England at a sold-out Old Trafford – and it is my job to write about it. When I grew up, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, that seemed an impossible dream. England offer record crowd glimpse of new dawn for women’s football | Jonathan Liew

Old Trafford was a bracing, stunning sight before kick-off amid the belief this could genuinely be the start of something Trailblazers. Pioneers. Game-changers. History-makers. Yes: England scored a first‑half goal and began a major tournament without looking flustered or getting booed off the pitch at full-time. It was comfortable rather than easy, composed rather than fluent. But as England completed their lap of honour in front of 69,000 chilly but cheering fans, the sense was of a team that were simply relieved to be off and running, determined to ride this wave of noise all the way to the end. For all England’s busyness, their 15 shots on goal, perhaps the moment that best encapsulated them came just seconds from the end. Deep into the 90 minutes Leah Williamson received the ball in defence, with Austrian shirts flooding forward in an attempt to hunt her down. If ever there was a time for getting rid, it was here. Instead Williamson looked up and pinged a precise 40-yard pass al

England ‘can do better’, insists Sarina Wiegman after victory against Austria

Football transfer rumours: Arsenal and Manchester United in for Dybala?

This morning’s tittle-tattle wants new balls, please The brightest scouts in the business at Manchester United and Arsenal woke up on Monday morning and came up with a cracking idea: signing Paulo Dybala on a free transfer after the elapsing of his contract at Juventus. The diminutive Argentinian has one of the sweetest left foots going and signing the 28-year-old might be too good an opportunity to turn down, if other suitors like Napoli can be fended off. Both Premier League clubs could probably rather do with a proper No 9 rather than another No 10. Arsenal, at least, have finally announced the capture of Gabriel Jesus after Alexandre Lacazette’s departure to Lyon, but Cristiano Ronaldo is doing his best to fling himself on to a private jet at Manchester Airport marked Do One. The Portuguese informed United on Saturday that while Erik ten Hag seemed nice enough, he fancied playing in the Champions League , although interest isn’t exactly coming in thick and fast for the 37-yea

Euro 2022 is here, and can be the living proof women’s football has arrived

Women’s game’s growth since Euro 2017 has been remarkable, and England offers the perfect stage to showcase that progress If a tree falls in the woods but no one is there to see or hear it, does it make a sound? For so long women’s football has been that tree, struggling to be seen or heard. There was so little coverage and attendances were so low that you could be forgiven for wondering if matches had even taken place. Now, all eyes are on the tree. There are journalists camped in the woods, laptops at the ready, a crowd has gathered around it and specialists wait nearby. The world has woken up to the existence of the women’s game in recent years and is now hungry for more. Reaching Euro 2022 a game changer for Northern Ireland and Rachel Furness

Liverpool midfielder has overcome serious injury to reach a finals she feels can transform the women’s game in her country Rachel Furness is unequivocal. “If, 10 years ago, you’d told me Windsor Park would sell out for a women’s international, I’d have laughed,” says Northern Ireland’s midfield playmaker. “I’d have said you were joking but qualifying for the Euros has worked wonders.” So much so that a record crowd of 15,348 gathered in Belfast in April to see Kenny Shiels’s side lose 5-0 to England in a World Cup qualifier. Undeterred by a somewhat chastening second half, locals offered Furness and her teammates a resounding ovation as, after the final whistle, Ben E King’s classic Stand by Me boomed out of Windsor Park’s sound system.
