Everton players see specialists on Zoom and Skype to recover from injuries

Schneiderlin and Tosun among players recovering from injuries Everton’s director of medical services doing one-on-one sessions Coronavirus – latest updates | See all our coronavirus coverage Everton have arranged for Morgan Schneiderlin to see his knee surgeon on Zoom next week as part of their strategy for treating injured players during the coronavirus lockdown. While players across the world follow individual and group training routines at home to keep fit during the crisis, the challenges facing those recovering from injury are more complex. Everton have three first-team players who are not receiving the hands-on treatment they would expect during rehabilitation from long-term injuries – Schneiderlin, Cenk Tosun and Jean-Philippe Gbamin. But, thanks to video communication services such as Skype and Zoom, the club have been able to manage their recoveries and, in Schneiderlin’s case, arrange a check-up with the specialist who operated on his torn meniscus last month. The season Arsenal played 70 games, reached two finals ... and won nothing

Daniel Levy calls on Premier League managers and players to take pay cuts

Tottenham chairman says ‘football cannot operate in a bubble’ Spurs reduce wages of 550 non-playing staff by 20% Coronavirus – latest updates | See all our coronavirus coverage Daniel Levy has called on Premier League managers and players to help English football deal with the financial problems caused by the coronavirus crisis by accepting lower pay after revealing that Tottenham Hotspur have reduced the wages of their 550 non-football staff by 20%, in some cases by placing them on furlough. Tottenham’s chairman said his club’s operations had “effectively ceased” during football’s enforced shutdown and urged coaches and players to do their bit to protect jobs. Jack Grealish needs to show he really has grown up this time | Paul Doyle

Aston Villa captain must ensure off-pitch conduct does not stop him from reaching the heights his talent puts within reach Jack Grealish probably was not the only 24-year-old to ignore the government lockdown last weekend in order to go socialising , but he was the only one to do so almost immediately after lecturing hundreds of thousands of followers on social media about the importance of staying at home in order to keep people safe. His demonstration of a do-as-I-say, not-as-I-do attitude has led many people to rail that he is unfit to continue captaining Aston Villa, though others might suggest it marks him out as a future prime minister. Grealish did a hypocritical and dangerous thing and his apology was not altogether satisfying, since his account of “what happened at the weekend” did not include any explanation as to how his Range Rover came to collide with several motionless vehicles. It would have been useful to hear his version of events given that so many other people are

My favourite game: Manchester United v West Ham, 2001 FA Cup | Jacob Steinberg

West Ham’s win was all the more memorable because their talented group of youngsters were soon to be broken up They moved the ball quickly and gracefully, the three kids at the heart of West Ham’s midfield. There was no hint of any fear, no sign of Michael Carrick, Joe Cole and Frank Lampard shrinking. They took the ball in difficult areas and it was impossible not to admire how they determined they were to seize the moment against Manchester United, who would exit the FA Cup after Fabien Barthez’s foolhardy decision to impersonate a man hailing a cab allowed Paolo Di Canio to steal a famous win . The new head of UKA, Joanna Coates, has called on West Ham to waive their tenancy rights if there is a fixture clash, and the London Legacy Development Corporation urged the club to compromise. Football's magnetism means doors should stay closed on crowdless matches | Simon Burnton

Scheduling football before restrictions end would be a nightmare as telling fans not to attend matches will not keep them away England has hosted only a handful of senior competitive behind-closed-doors football fixtures and anyone who considers them a suitable and workable solution to the problems now facing sport could probably do with a reminder about how the previous ones went down, starting with the first. This, at least, is a chapter of British sporting history that anyone can be forgiven for forgetting, since it took place 105 years ago. In March 1915 Bradford City, one of two Bradford clubs in the First Division at the time, met Norwich City of the Southern League in the third round of the FA Cup. They first played in Yorkshire, drawing 1-1 after extra time, and when the match was replayed the following weekend at The Nest, then Norwich’s home ground, it finished goalless. A second replay was thus required, and arranged for a neutral venue – Lincoln City volunteered – but wit

My favourite game: Argentina v Cameroon, 1990 World Cup

Arguably the greatest upset in World Cup history and one that made me well and truly fall in love with football Life is filled with memorable summers and among my first was that of 1990. I was nine at the time and for the past year or so a Liverpool supporter. But that was as far as my love of football went – they were the only team I cared about, the only team I wanted to watch, and games that did not involve men in red shirts with Candy across the middle didn’t interest me much. That, however, was about to change. On Friday 8 June 1990 to be precise, and having sat down in front of the living-room television to watch Argentina versus Cameroon in the opening fixture of that year’s World Cup. Diego Maradona was key to my decision to do so. I had heard of him, how he was the best player of his generation and probably of all time, and here he was – on show at the start of a global tournament taking place across an entire month. I was intrigued by what lay ahead and there was to be no d

Premier League players will be told to stop training amid doubts over restart

Resumption on 30 April appears increasingly unlikely Coronavirus – latest updates | See all our coverage The Premier League is ready to accept the inevitable over the coronavirus pandemic and tell its players to take a break from training as doubts increase over the likelihood of restarting the season in a month’s time. Clubs have been attempting to keep their players fully fit for a possible resumption of games after 30 April . But even if the plan to play matches behind closed doors goes ahead, it seems that early May will be too soon. No coronavirus financial support for struggling top women's teams, says FA

Women’s Super League and Championship clubs must pay players during lockdown, with FA determined to finish current season The FA has told struggling Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship teams there is no financial support available and that it remains determined to wait out the pandemic and complete the 2019-20 seasons of the top two tiers. The FA voided the season for all tiers of the women’s pyramid from the National League down (tiers three to seven and grassroots football) on Thursday. The decision drew criticism from a number of clubs, including Barnsley, who said they were not consulted until shortly before the plans were made public and urged the FA to “immediately reconsider” the decision. Minute-by-minute retro coverage of Group 4 game The Fiver: Ally’s Army on the brink of elimination Get in touch! Email scott.murray@theguardian.com 2.30pm GMT Some literally breaking news from back home: A brick has been hoyed through the window of the Scottish FA offices in Glasgow. All that pre-tournament hubris is coming back to bite MacLeod and his squad on the padded side of their trousers in a big way. Take that going-away party at Hampden, for example. “They should have had the send-off after they came back,” was one Glasgow punter’s wonderfully tinder-dry take during an STV vox pop. The amount of promotional activity undertaken by both manager and squad hasn’t aged well either. In retrospect, the ad campaign for Chrysler Avenger, which showed the team standing around the popular family car alongside the slogan “They both run rings around the competition”, was simply asking for trouble. It’s been pulled, two days ahead of schedule. “It’s not my fault, I didn’t write the c

From the archive: Rob Smyth on why Euro 96 was overrated

ITV will show all of England’s games again this summer, with every other match available on demand. As Rob Smyth wrote in 2007, highlights may be few and far between This article was originally published in July 2007 Tunnel vision is one of the most important qualities in a sportsman, but it is less commendable in spectators. Otherwise you end up with a distorted reality, like Euro 96. Football clubs' good deeds go a long way but shutdown exposes financial faultlines | Paul Wilson

The game’s wealthier end is doing what it can in the coronavirus crisis but the precarious financial reality for too many lower-league clubs also plain to see “What is football without a crowd?” Pep Guardiola asked a couple of weeks ago, just before it became plain that crowds of any kind now had to be avoided. The short answer is not very much. Football has probably only just realised how much of its appeal lay in its ability to attract and entertain large numbers of people packed close together. Football stadiums are designed to accommodate crowds, to facilitate companionship; up and down the country those large edifices now standing empty and silent are powerful reminders that the human urge to congregate and commune is what has been suspended indefinitely. Consider also the distinct lack of appetite for any sort of behind-closed-doors conclusion to the various loose ends of the season. No one is really going to do that, surely? It is hard to imagine anything more likely to de

'It's horrible': Halesowen halted with promotion and Wembley in sight

All of the club’s hopes and expectations have dissolved after the FA announced their season had been cancelled If everything went as well for Halesowen Town as planned, their time spent in the Southern League Division One Central would have been over in a flash. After years of struggling in the division above, last season they were finally relegated. The failure prompted a complete rehauling of the team, with an entirely new set of players and a new head coach brought in. It worked. By March they sat second, one point off the top with a game in hand, well on course for promotion. On Thursday afternoon, all those hopes and expectations dissolved. After weeks of postponements because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Football Association finally announced in conjunction with the National League System that all leagues from steps three to six were cancelled. All results have been “expunged” and no teams will face promotion or relegation. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardia

My favourite game: Chelsea v Napoli 2012 | Luke McLaughlin

As this unforgettable night wore on, the teams abandoned their tactical systems and went for the jugular Eamon Dunphy once described a hectic, high-scoring Premier League encounter as “like watching two drunks fighting in an alley”. He wasn’t being wholly complimentary about that spectacle, but still acknowledged the thrill of seeing two sides cast off any pretence of tactical discipline and go for broke. Dunphy’s phrase came back to me at Stamford Bridge in March 2012. Trailing 3-1 from the first leg in Naples, a 2-0 victory would have sent Chelsea into the Champions League last eight. Walter Mazzarri’s Napoli, playing 3-4-3, arrived aiming to hit on the break. The context was fascinating. Chelsea’s first-leg defeat hastened the dismissal of André Villa-Boas, lured from Porto less than a year earlier . Roberto Di Matteo took caretaker charge of a battle-hardened team who had hated Villas-Boas’s methods: John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba among them. They had an unhappy rec

The midfielder’s early experiences in Bulgaria were enjoyable and the football was going so well he was called up by Nigeria for that friendly in Singapore. When Raúl moved to the Bundesliga and charmed a nation of football fans

Raúl was 33 when he left Real Madrid for Schalke but he still had his competitive streak and his goalscoring touch By Jason Humphreys for Englische Woche In the closing minutes of Schalke’s pre-season friendly against Qatari club Al Sadd, a 13-year-old boy held up the fourth official’s board. On it was an illuminated number seven. As is tradition in Germany, the stadium announcer proclaimed the substitution by saying the number and allowing the fans to chant the name of the player. The crowd duly obliged and the name “Rauuuul” rung around the ground. The 36-year-old left the field, saluted the crowd and embraced the young boy on the sideline – his eldest son, Jorge. This was Raúl’s last game for Schalke, played against the team he had agreed to join next. He played a half for each team, scoring two goals against his new employers in the process. From Mané to Ings: awards of the Premier League season so far

With football on hold we select some of the highlights of the top-flight campaign until now – and the biggest flop Jordan Henderson’s influence deserves acclaim but Sadio Mané is remarkably consistent and reaches heights that his captain cannot. The temptation for players who can do it all is to overdo it, but Mané is too smart for that. He is the purest epitome of this Liverpool team because he is supremely efficient. Sometimes that means doing something as simple as running on to a long pass by Virgil van Dijk and slotting the ball past the keeper in the way he did for the winning goal against Bournemouth in Liverpool’s last domestic game before the suspension of the Premier League; and sometimes it means producing supernatural flourishes like his stoppage-time headed winning goal at Aston Villa or the touch that enabled him to take down a pass by Henderson while pirouetting past a defender before ramming the ball into the net against Norwich.
