Manchester United end US tour with error-strewn defeat to Borussia Dortmund

Erik ten Hag’s side fall 3-2 to Bundesliga side in Las Vegas Diogo Dalot and Antony on target for understrength United Situated across from Dean Martin Drive, cocooned in the $1.9bn Allegiant Stadium from the 40C heat and sirocco blowing across the Mojave Desert on which Las Vegas is built, Manchester United’s US tour closed with a record of one win and three defeats following this 3-2 reverse to Borussia Dortmund that was an unwanted comedy of errors. The German side’s winner derived from a third defensive malady of United’s evening. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s loose pass went to Marco Reus who, after a one-two with Julian Brandt, slid the ball across for Youssoufa Moukoko to beat André Onana. Trinity Rodman: from million-dollar teenager to USA’s World Cup cutting edge

The forward wasn’t expecting to play a crucial role for the USWNT. But injuries and her willingness to work on all aspects of her game have reaped rewards Here’s the thing about Trinity Rodman’s journey to the 2023 World Cup: It wasn’t always part of some long-term plan she laid out when she turned professional two years ago. “It sounds silly, but it wasn’t even in my mind just because of how young I was and still am,” Rodman told the Guardian in an interview prior to the World Cup. “I think I’ve always just been trying to build my game.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jul/30/trinity-rodman-from-million-dollar-teenager-to-usas-world-cup-cutting-edge

Ex-Matildas coach Alen Stajcic is taking the Philippines to new heights | Kieran Pender

The Filipinas’ first World Cup win was a decade in the making – but the team’s rise has picked up speed since the Australian arrived It took 32 years for the Filipinas to reach the heights of the Women’s World Cup. But it took them just two matches to secure their first World Cup win, against co-hosts New Zealand on Tuesday . The unexpected victory leaves the Philippines on the brink of the round of 16, if they can pull off another remarkable result on Sunday against Norway, a team featuring some of the best players in the world. But since he was appointed in late 2021, Filipinas coach Alen Stajcic – who formerly led the Matildas until a contentious exit ahead of the 2019 World Cup – has consistently delivered the unexpected. Horan’s header saves point for USA against Dutch in 2019 final rematch

USA and Netherlands play to 1-1 draw in Group E blockbuster Lindsey Horan’s header cancels out Jill Roord’s opening goal Thursday’s meeting between the United States and the Netherlands was billed as the decisive match of Group E at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, but clarity will have to wait a few more days. The USA and the Netherlands played to a 1-1 draw in Wellington in a first half dictated by the Dutch before Rose Lavelle entered the game and the Americans found their rhythm. Jill Roord opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the 17th minute with a low strike from 17 yards out that went through USA midfielder Lindsey Horan’s legs and into the far corner of the goal. The goal came after Lieke Martens broke through the USA midfield, and evaded a challenge from Andi Sullivan before hitting the ball wide to Victoria Pelova, who had two cracks at finding an open team-mate. It was the first goal the USA have conceded in the group stage since the opening match of the 2015 World Cup.

England need to improve fragile defence after rescue act by Mary Earps | Sophie Downey

Haiti give the Lionesses a scare in their World Cup opener and progress is required before the sterner test of Denmark After months of buildup, England took to the World Cup stage in Brisbane with a frail defensive display. For a side whose success in the Euros last summer depended so heavily on their ability in defence, they were made to look fragile, and at times chaotic, by a fast and tenacious Haiti side who took the game to the European champions. The Lionesses’ backline was always going to be a focal point when Millie Bright was declared fit by Sarina Wiegman a little over 24 hours before kick-off. The England captain played her first 90 minutes of competitive football since injuring her knee in March. While she had received some minutes in a behind-closed-doors game last week against Canada, the cobwebs were clear to see. Lionel Messi’s inevitable magic seals famous night for Inter Miami and MLS

It unfolded just as the owner foresaw, with the absurd inevitability of his new signing’s brilliance. Naarm, Gadigal, Tāmaki Makaurau: Indigenous placenames in the spotlight at Women’s World Cup

For the first time in a World Cup, the nine host cities will be referred to by the dual names in all signage, broadcasts, stadiums and online material The Women’s World Cup has kicked off in Australia and New Zealand and fans would notice every city hosting a match has been identified by two names. Fernandes runs the show as Manchester United and Arsenal weigh each other up

Arsenal 0-2 Manchester United Rice, Havertz and Timber start for Gunners; Onana not ready to play Drawing any certainties from a summer tour game can be foolish, so the shrewdest conclusion to offer from this encounter is that those new signings of Manchester United and Arsenal who featured can be content with their outings. No matter: deep in injury time, Inter Miami were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out. He duly fired a perfect strike into the top corner, winning the game, and was mobbed by jubilant teammates. From a match with 149 own goals to Scottish Cup routs: football’s most lopsided results

Bayern Munich’s 27-0 win in a friendly has garnered plenty of attention, but there have been far more shocking scorelines There can’t be a much better start to pre-season than winning a match 27-0, which is exactly what Bayern Munich did this week against the unfortunate Rottach-Egern, who play in Germany’s ninth tier. Just imagine the damage if Thomas Tuchel’s side had secured their summer target Harry Kane . (In truth, there probably is a better start to a pre-season, and that’s to play a friendly that provides an actual challenge – Bayern beat the same opposition 23-0 in 2019 …) Though it might seem unlikely that a match that had a scoreline of 18-0 at half-time – and in which three players eventually scored five goals each – is nowhere near the heaviest defeat of all time, there have been plenty of lopsided scorelines throughout football history. Here we take a look at some of the more surprising, excruciating and scandalous. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian h

Poker faces and competitive advantage: how the Sam Kerr injury drama unfolded | Kieran Pender

The striker’s calf muscle has been thrust into the spotlight and prompted a debate about how the revelation was handled by the Matildas camp “I can’t at this time give away too much – I keep it close to my chest.” With those words on Wednesday evening, barely 24 hours before Australia began their Women’s World Cup campaign with a narrow win over Ireland , Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson did nothing to hint at the bombshell he would later drop. The question had not been intended to elicit anything of the magnitude of the news that would break the following day, that Sam Kerr would miss at least the first two matches of the tournament . It was an innocuous query, a request for a fitness update with two players – Tameka Yallop and Kyah Simon – known to be nursing injuries. Fake agents increasing and are exploiting youngsters ‘The dream ends up being a nightmare,’ says Drogba Didier Drogba has warned of the “nightmare” facing scores of young African footballers who are scammed by fake agents promising them successful careers in Europe and elsewhere. A survey from Fifpro, the global players’ union, has laid bare the extent of the problem and Fifpro has partnered with Drogba’s foundation and the International Labour Organization (ILO) to raise awareness and help players avoid falling victim in future. “The dream ends up being a nightmare for these young people,” Drogba said. Maresca on a mission to mirror Citys methods in manager role at Leicester

After being Pep Guardiola’s assistant, the Italian’s new challenge is to get the relegated Foxes back into the Premier League A crackling chuckle can be heard echoing under Enzo Maresca’s breath. “You want to know if we are going to play in the same way, yeah?” he asks, launching into a broad grin before the question is even finished. The question is, of course, whether his Leicester City side will attempt to mirror Manchester City’s methods in the second tier as they target an immediate Premier League return, given Maresca accepted the Leicester manager job within days of winning the treble alongside Pep Guardiola. “It is that idea. But it is not [about it happening] tomorrow, it is a process. The idea is to try to play in one way, the way we want, but it will require time. Hopefully we can achieve it as soon as possible.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jul/03/maresca-on-a-mission-to-mirror-citys-methods-in-manager-role
