Sadio Mané on Barcelona 'jealously', Real Madrid links and Liverpool's golden boot battle – video

Liverpool winger Sadio Mané has distanced himself from rumours that he is considering a move to Real Madrid this summer. Speaking before his team’s Champions League semi-final first leg tie against Barcelona, the Senegalese footballer said: ‘I have this opportunity [in the Premier League] so I think it’s cool.’ Mané, who has scored 25 goals for the Liverpool this season, also revealed he is ‘jealous’ of Barcelona for having Philippe Coutinho and is confident that Virgil van Dijk can annul the threat of Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou. Liverpool must be willing to suffer against Barcelona, says Jürgen Klopp

• Klopp says Champions League opponents are ‘brilliant team’ • ‘We miss Coutinho a lot,’ Liverpool manager admits Jürgen Klopp said Liverpool must be willing to suffer against “brilliant” Barcelona to shatter Lionel Messi’s dream of winning the Champions League for a fifth time. Messi pledged earlier this season that the newly-crowed Spanish champions would “do all we can to bring that beautiful trophy back to the Camp Nou”, having seen arch rivals Real Madrid win it for the past three years. The Liverpool manager accepts his team must overcome one of the toughest tests in football to reach the final for a second year running and prevent the great Argentinian equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s haul of Champions League winners’ medals this season. But it is a challenge that excites Klopp, who has not lost any of his 10 European knockout ties with Liverpool. When Norwich dreamed of Europe but settled for promotion

Norwich have been brilliant this season but their promotion to the top flight in 1986 takes some beating for drama By Steven Pye for That 1980s Sports Blog As spring turned to summer in 1985, Norwich fans must have been emotionally drained. In March, the football Gods shone on them as they beat local rivals Ipswich in the League Cup semi-finals and then won the final against Sunderland to qualify for Europe for the first time in their history. But all that glory and hope would be taken away by the end of May. Norwich’s league form collapsed after their big day out at Wembley, with a run of eight defeats in nine games sending them towards the relegation zone. Their season was in danger of falling apart but a win at Chelsea in their final game left them on 49 points, surely enough to keep them up. They just had to hope that Coventry, who still had three games to play, didn’t win them all. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/that

Ajax, the success story of the Champions League this season

Despite their European Cup pedigree, the Dutch side’s lack of financial muscle make them the outliers of the final four When Tottenham and Ajax kick off in the Champions League on Tuesday, Spurs will be playing in their first semi-final in the competition. Ajax have won the European Cup or Champions League four times. But statistically speaking, Ajax are the great success story of this stage of the tournament. The numbers are stacked against them in almost every way. On paper, Ajax simply don’t have the same quality as their opponents – or that of Barcelona or Liverpool. Based on their Elo ranking – which calculates a team’s quality based on number of victories, margin of victory, quality of opponent and home or away advantage – Ajax are by far the weakest team of the four semi-finalists (Barcelona and Liverpool play in the other tie). Unbeaten Manchester City fall short in WSL where every game matters | Suzanne Wrack

Arsenal’s triumph and Chelsea’s demise are proof of the unpredictability of women’s football and the excitement will surely rise with United and Spurs A lot has been written about the battle at the top of the Premier League and the likelihood of Liverpool finishing in second place with more than 90 points. That two teams have kept pace and driven each other to the limit is hugely impressive. And as a result many a comment piece has lamented the misfortune of the Merseysiders’ bid for a first league title in 29 years. But when we are discussing teams that have run out of luck, spare a thought for Manchester City women. Nick Cushing’s team are one game from an unbeaten Women’s Super League season but on Saturday 11 May they will line up to give Arsenal a guard of honour. Should they slightly dampen the party on the final day at Borehamwood, City would complete their second undefeated season, having achieved the feat in 2016 on the way to their first and only league title . Will the Canadian Premier League turn the country into a football power?

Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver compete in MLS, but an exclusively Canadian professional league is hoping to boost the national team Just a few years ago, young Canadian soccer players like Ryan Telfer and Kadell Thomas had little shot at professional careers. Without a professional domestic league solely based in Canada players entered their 20s with a sense of uncertainty: despite having the talent to progress into academies, colleges and semi-pro leagues, they would either be forced to play abroad – unless they made it to the handful of Canadian MLS teams – or quit the game altogether. “There are so few options,” said Telfer in 2018. But this weekend, Telfer and Thomas entered the annals of Canadian soccer history. And more importantly, they now have a pathway to sustained success. On a windy Saturday afternoon in front of 17,611 spectators at Hamilton’s Tim Horton’s Field, Telfer and Thomas each scored in an entertaining 1-1 draw between York 9 FC and Hamilton’s Forge FC in the

Football rumours: Rio Ferdinand to be Manchester United sporting director?

Today’s fluff talks a good game on Twitter A widely held view, supported by a Schwarzenegger-like body of evidence, is that Ed Woodward has not shown much canniness when it comes to Manchester United’s transfer dealing. Too emotional or kneejerk in his decisions, people say. So he should hire someone else to oversee transfers, people also say. The problem with that line of thinking is that if Woodward isn’t cool-headed when it comes to signing players, why would he be cool-headed when signing someone to sign players? Like, if the criticism is fair, then wouldn’t he end up appointing, say, Rio Ferdinand as director of football because he liked him as a player and thinks he talks a good game on Twitter? Well that would be – hold on, what’s this? According to the Daily Mail, Woodward has met with Rio Ferdinand to discuss the former defender taking up the position of director of football at Manchester United ! At least one pundit is understood to be certain such a development won’t end i

Edwin van der Sar: ‘We reached a level of football nobody really expected’

It felt like a pivotal moment. Off the pace in the Eredivisie, without any European football to spice up the season, Edwin van der Sar and Marc Overmars, the CEO and director of football, hatched a plan to try to keep their finest prospects from seeking greener grass. André Onana, Matthijs De Ligt, Donny van de Beek, Frenkie de Jong, Justin Kluivert, Kasper Dolberg and David Neres were called to a meeting. They were shown a video, made just for them, where they were each compared to an iconic player from the club’s past who played in their position. The message was unequivocal. Van der Sar picks up the story. “We said: ‘If you want to be a legend of Ajax you need to win something big’. In my

Barcelona make the extraordinary seem normal to wrap up another title | Sid Lowe

There was a sense of weakness when Valverde took over but successive La Liga titles have made Barça look untouchable Not long after their 2-0 victory in Vitoria late on Wednesday, with Barcelona four weeks from the finish and three points from the title, Ernesto Valverde was asked if he would like to win the league the following evening or the following Saturday. “What I like,” he said, “is that I get asked that question.” It was done, again. And it was done early, again. Barcelona had beaten Real Madrid, beaten Atlético Madrid and beaten everyone else except Athletic Club and Valencia. Now they had beaten Alavés too, affording them the luxury of choice: they could take the title with a win over Levante three days later or they could be handed it with an Atlético defeat against Valencia the next day, watching it on TV – and no one wanted that. They didn’t want to be handed it in the car on the way to work three days after that, either. “I’d rather win it at home with our fans,” Sergi

Schalke come from nowhere to put dizzy Dortmund all but out of race | Andy Brassell

On paper, Borussia Dortmund should have hammered Schalke but a 4-2 defeat has virtually ended their Bundesliga aspirations If it was going to fall apart maybe it was always going to be here, now and in this way. This was a Revierderby that looked as if it might be Schalke’s worst nightmare in a season full of them. The distance between them and arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund was 42 points at kick-off, a gap that had never been as pronounced at this stage of a Bundesliga season before. This looked like a Saturday afternoon in Westfalen – where Dortmund had been yet to lose in the league this season – in which clichés about derbies and form books could be safely left at home. And yet. A bruised team, mentally and physically, that even the legendary Huub Stevens has struggled to drag towards respectability, found a way to call the cops on Dortmund’s noisy party and to win 4-2. As the majority of Signal Iduna Park stood stunned at the final whistle, the home side had to face the fact tha

Torino channel their Invincibles in unlikely quest for Champions League | Paolo Bandini

Inter v Juventus drew the focus but the cities’ other teams – Milan and Torino – played a more significant match “Game over.” The words stretched out across the second tier of San Siro’s northern stand on Saturday night in an epic display of schadenfreude. Juventus are champions of Italy for the eighth year running, yet their quest to conquer Europe for the first time since 1996 remains unfulfilled. No club’s supporters enjoy that truth more than those of Inter: the last Serie A team to lift the Champions League. Still, the mockery cut both ways. If the game is over for Juventus in Europe, then domestically it never even began. Inter, in their second season under Luciano Spalletti, were supposed to be building towards a title challenge. When the fixtures were first published, this one leapt off the page. A Derby d’Italia in late April ought to have something riding on it for both teams. Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Chris Hughton’s position looks uncertain after five successful years, Youri Tielemans catches the eye but Leicester will face a battle to keep him and Wolves show the way forward When was the last time Manchester City finished a Premier League match with four centre-halves on the pitch? Pep Guardiola, who admitted he had been “trembling”, said he would have brought on another one if he had not already used all his substitutes and Sean Dyche said, with some pride, that he could tell the City manager was anxious. “I saw Pep Guardiola with my own eyes – and I heard it too – screaming, ‘Get it in the corner.’ That’s some compliment.” It was certainly not a stress-free afternoon at Turf Moor for the league leaders and reigning champions but 12 league wins in a row suggest City can handle the pressure. If they can make it 14, it will guarantee the championship trophy staying in Manchester and there are no signs that they will not be able to cope now the heat of the battle is close to intole

2019 World Cup must be mid-summer feast for women’s game to thrive on | Tanya Aldred

With 40 days to the tournament and the BBC showing all matches, the spectacle must not hide the game’s need for big investment You know you’re getting on a bit when life suddenly jolts you into the present, when baby steps that happened while you were busy pottering from the tooth fairy to life insurance have somehow become a revolution. Let me tell you a story. Not far away lives a teenager I’ve known since she started primary school in the same year as my daughter. From reception class onwards she was an amazing sportswoman – the fastest runner, the most agile tag rugby player with the quickest hands and, above all, the noblest footballer. She is driven and ridiculously competitive and each time she tried a new sport a coach would sidle up to her mum asking if she’d perhaps like to take the activity further. But it was always football and only football she wanted. She was noticed by a scout at six, who said he didn’t usually look at girls but she was exceptional. Now in her teens sh

Virgil van Dijk and Vivianne Miedema named PFA players of the year

• Liverpool defender beats Raheem Sterling to award • City’s Sterling wins young player of the year Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Vivianne Miedema of Arsenal have been crowned Professional Footballers’ Association players of the year for the 2018-19 season, with Raheem Sterling and Georgia Stanway named as young players of the year. Netherlands defender Van Dijk saw off stiff competition from Manchester City’s Sterling to take the award after a brilliant season that has seen Jürgen Klopp’s side concede just 20 goals from their 36 matches so far. Van Dijk, who moved to Anfield in January 2018 from Southampton for £75m, has helped Liverpool record 17 clean sheets this season and becomes only the fifth defender to receive the award after Norman Hunter, Colin Todd, Gary Pallister, Paul McGrath and John Terry. Fernando Llorente warns Tottenham to raise game for Ajax after first home loss

• Striker says team were not ‘mentally’ ready for West Ham game • Repeat performance risked Champions League semi-final defeat It took most of Tottenham’s players over an hour to leave the dressing room after falling to West Ham but, when he finally emerged, Fernando Llorente’s message cut straight to the point. If Spurs produce a repeat performance against Ajax on Tuesday, their dreams of reaching the Champions League final risk evaporating before the second leg has even begun. Llorente had been brought on midway through the second half to pose West Ham a different threat with the game goalless. Within a minute Michail Antonio had finished decisively at the other end and the overriding theme, after a sluggish attempt to come back, was that Spurs need to liven up and quickly. Steven Gerrard admits he is not satisfied with second best as he strives to make Rangers real challengers next season after the Light Blues guaranteed the Ladbrokes Premiership runners-up slot by beating Aberdeen with two James Tavernier penalties. Manchester City’s response to pressure is ‘overwhelming’, says Pep Guardiola

• Manager delighted with his side’s ability to handle pressure • Win at Burnley puts City top with two games remaining Pep Guardiola praised Manchester City’s “overwhelming” capacity to handle pressure after they overcame the challenge of Burnley to reassume the box seat in the Premier League title race. Sergio Agüero’s second-half goal gave them a narrow win and, while City could have won by more, they saw out the final stages with four centre-backs on the pitch as their opponents attempted an aerial bombardment. They escaped with few real scares and Guardiola was delighted with the way they have refocused after recent disappointment. Ashley Barnes fails to provide twist that Jürgen Klopp wished for | Nick Ames

The Liverpool manager had jokingly offered to sign the Burnley striker if he scored against title rivals Manchester City Once bitten, twice shy. All week Manchester City had been warned that Burnley, a banana skin and wrecking ball in one grimly-organised package, had it in their gift to ruin everything. They had been held to a draw here 14 months ago , not that it ultimately mattered, and the thought of a repeat was enough to set spines tingling across Merseyside. Yet by the end it was Ilkay Gündogan, rather than a home player, who was being yellow carded for delaying a set-piece and City, as opposed to Jürgen Klopp’s team, who again wrested a level of control they are unlikely to let slip. You might not thrash Burnley here; you might only edge past them by 29.51mm. This, though, felt like a deflating blow for City’s rivals given the hopes they had invested in the buildup. This cleanest-cut of title races had finally been injected with a shot of mild mischief by Klopp. He had taken t

Chelsea crash out to Lyon after Maren Mjelde own goal proves costly

• Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (agg 2-3) (Ji; Mjelde og) • Lyon will face Barcelona in Champions League final Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League semi-finals to holders Lyon after a third own goal in three games gave the French champions the away goal that cancelled out Erin Cuthbert’s first-leg volley. Amandine Henry’s strike ricocheted cruelly off the leg of Maren Mjelde and trickled underneath Ann-Katrin Berger before a Ji So-yun free-kick ensured a draw in front of a sold out 4,670 crowd. Arsenal crowned WSL champions with game to spare after thrashing Brighton

• Brighton 0-4 Arsenal (Miedema 6, McCabe 31, Mead 70, Van de Donk 77) • Arsenal win title In the 70th minute Beth Mead picked up the ball in midfield, advanced towards the Brighton area as Fern Whelan backtracked and from 30 yards unleashed a brilliant shot that arrowed into the far corner of the net. Arsenal had established a three-goal lead and there could be no doubt now: after a seven-year gap, they would be champions once more. It was an irresistible goal, suitably celebrated, and a fitting way for the Gunners to seal a title for which they have appeared destined since they launched their campaign with an avalanche of goals and points, and nine successive wins. Patience, scouting and the system: the story behind Norwich’s promotion

Sticking with Daniel Farke last summer, shrewd signings and players buying into the ideas of a collective spirit have lifted the Canaries into the top flight It was just after a 3-0 home defeat that people at Norwich started to think they were on the right track. The Canaries had won just one of their first five games, James Maddison and Josh Murphy had been sold in the summer and most of the arrivals were relative unknowns. After a disappointing 14th-place finish last season, the waning faith from the stands in manager Daniel Farke was understandable. But afterwards a few Norwich players commented that for the first 30 minutes or so of that game things clicked, and they realised they could play the sort of football that Farke had been talking about since his appointment the previous summer. From bedlam to the Bernabéu – how Ajax performed a miracle

Acrimony and underachievement have given way to stability and nous and taken the Netherlands’ most storied club to the verge of an unthinkable achievement Dennis Bergkamp’s answer is short. No, he doesn’t want to talk about Ajax. Today the former Holland and Arsenal legend is coaching the youth team his son Mitchel plays for at Almere City, a first division side located in Flevoland. His thoughts about Ajax, the club that he was part of for so long as a player and coach, will not be shared. For all that a young and celebrated Ajax side have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they face Tottenham Hotspur, Bergkamp is no longer part of the famous Dutch club’s story. At the heart of Ajax’s European success, after beating Real Madrid and Juventus in sensational style, lies a bitter story of former teammates who once seemed friends or at least allies departing the club in acrimonious circumstances. Mario Vrancic blasts Norwich past Blackburn and into the Premier League

Norwich confirmed their return to the Premier League with a swagger, winning here with the brio that has become a leitmotif under their German manager, Daniel Farke. Marco Stiepermann scored early and Mario Vrancic soon added a second and, despite Lewis Travis’s goal for Blackburn, Norwich never looked like collapsing to a defeat that would have delayed their promotion to the top flight after a three-year absence. They will go up as title winners if they earn point or more next week at Aston Villa. Norwich knew it would take freakish results in the last week of the season to deny them promotion but Farke was warning against complacency. Few managers know better than him how quickly fortunes can change. There were some Norwich fans who wanted rid of him earlier this season, when his team mustered one win in their first six league matches, an ominous start on the back of last season’s ho-hum 14th-place finish. But the faithless did not get their wish and instead Farke demonstrated the b

It was difficult to be sure if it was genuinely the work of its equalities team or an idea dreamt up by a PR agency. A suspicious mind might have wondered whether the relevant people needed some positive publicity after all that unfortunate business with Gordon Taylor and, even if you were willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, I couldn’t help but feel they were pushing their luck to think a 24-hour boycott of social media , a hashtag and a new buzzword would make a lasting difference. More than anything, it all felt, well, a bit tame. This was the first time ever in England and Wales that the people who play the sport professionally had been invited to protest, as one, about the racism many of them have to endure. Brighton thrown lifeline as Pascal Gross earns draw against Newcastle

This game had edged into its final minute when Anthony Knockaert swung over a cross and Glenn Murray, free at the far post, nodded the ball over a gaping net from close range. Chris Hughton buried his head in his hands in disbelief, the chance of a first league win since early March passed up in that moment. Yet when the dust settles, Brighton & Hove Albion may consider this to have been the point which preserved their Premier League status. The draw, secured late with a first goal for seven weeks, has edged the home side four points clear of Cardiff City and, even with daunting fixtures to come, the likelihood is their current tally should prove sufficient to survive. The Welsh club will realistically have to win their last two games, at home to Crystal Palace and away at Manchester United, to stand a chance. Liverpool face reunion with lost loves Luis Suárez and Philippe Coutinho

The Champions League semi-final against Barcelona will pit two generations of Anfield attackers against each other Liverpool will cost themselves some money should they reach the Champions League final at Barcelona’s expense – one of the add-ons to Philippe Coutinho’s transfer fee of £105m just over a year ago was an extra £4.5m should the Catalans win the event this season. Financial considerations apart, it should be quite the reunion when Jürgen Klopp’s side arrive at the Camp Nou on Wednesday. Liverpool were not only responsible for showcasing Coutinho’s talents in a manner that made him irresistible to Barcelona, they did exactly the same with Luis Suárez four years earlier, again making an impressive profit on a player they signed relatively cheaply. Benítez’s contract expires on 30 June and Newcastle’s manager will not renew it unless Ashley offers him autonomy over recruitment and the transfer budget needed to make the club competitive. “For me, the potential’s here,” said Benítez, whose team travel to Brighton on Saturday. “It’s a massive club, a massive city and the support’s massive.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/apr/26/rafael-benitez-mike-ashley-newcastle

Montenegro made to play one game behind closed doors over fans' racism

Uefa issues suspension over conduct in England game PSG’s Neymar gets three-game ban for Instagram rant Uefa has ordered Montenegro to play one match behind closed doors after England players were racially abused during a European Championships qualifier. Danny Rose, Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi were particularly targeted by groups of home fans within the Gradski Stadion in Podgorica, as the Three Lions won 5-1 on 25 March. Sterling celebrated his goal in the game in front of the Montenegrin fans, who were heard directing monkey chants to England’s black players. Brighton & Hove Albion v Newcastle United: match preview

Brighton have now played 11 hours of football since Solly March’s equaliser against Millwall in the FA Cup quarter-finals in March. You could watch the entirety of Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy in that time and still have 48 minutes to spare. So with Chris Hughton’s side struggling to tread water, the manager would surely be unable to refuse if Rafael Benítez offered him a vital point before kick-off. If they lose, though, and Cardiff beat Fulham then Brighton will just be safe on goal difference and sleeping with the fishes down in the Championship next season becomes an even more distinct possibility. Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United: match preview

It is all very well for Tottenham’s players to say they have no thought of Tuesday’s Champions League showdown with Ajax but, according to Mauricio Pochettino, “it is not easy to manage your unconscious mind.” And so the Spurs manager has had to be firm in his pre-West Ham message. “Without tomorrow, there is no Tuesday,” he said. How West Ham would love to dent the home side’s perfect record at their new stadium and their top-four push. Crystal Palace v Everton: match preview

Crystal Palace have not beaten Everton in a league game at Selhurst Park since 1989, and have won only four top-flight matches there this season. But a startling success at Arsenal guaranteed survival and has focused minds on beating their best Premier League points tally, 48, of their current six-year stint, in the games to come. Marco Silva has been beaten on visits here with Hull and Watford, but Everton had their own excellent victory to celebrate on Sunday and arrive confident after four wins in five. The Fiver | Using an immortal Scottish swordsman to slay Manchester City

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! For the 999th time this season, Liverpool have the joyless task of trying to put pressure on Manchester City by winning a game of football, before having all hope extinguished when City make a crucial match look like a stroll to the off-licence to pick up a six-pack of Purple Tin a couple of days later. You see, Jürgen Klopp’s side face Huddersfield on Friday night with the chance to go two points clear of City, who take on Dwight McNeil +10 on Sunday. And while creatively-challenged types such as The Fiver have struggled to come up with a title-race film analogy better than that of Liverpool playing the role of a clanking Arnie in Terminator 2 gamely trying to get the better of Pep’s super-slick T-1000, Klopp has rewound the clock to 1986 and reminded readers of a certain age of Christopher Lambert’s finest hour. Yes, Getafe really might be on their way to the Champions League | Sid Lowe

An unlikely dream of joining Europe’s elite were improved by a draw with Real but the fact they wanted more said much The first time anyone noticed Jaime Mata he was standing there half-naked and even then no one really cared for long. He was a galáctico, sure, but not that kind of galáctico. A university student studying business and international commerce, he was also a pretty average striker at his local club Pegaso Galáctico in Spain’s Tercera División, which despite its name is a long way below the third division: there’s a Second; a Second B, 80 teams spread across four regional divisions; and then Third, with 366 teams in 18 provincial groups. Pegaso were in trouble, so Mata and his teammates posed for two photos: the first on the pitch with their shorts down, the second in the dressing room wearing nothing but pieces of paper to cover their modesty, lined up to spell out the club’s bank account. If you can spell out numbers. Anyway, the plea was out there, the press called

Southampton v Bournemouth: match preview

Southampton can confirm their Premier League status by beating Bournemouth and if Cardiff fail to win against relegated Fulham. A fairly likely occurrence for Neil Warnock’s side given they have done so 26 times this season. Ralph Hassenhüttl will take solace in Eddie Howe’s painfully long injury list and feel his steadily improving Southampton can exploit Bournemouth’s ravaged backline. Howe has five injured defenders from a total of eight that will be missing on Saturday. Howe’s side may be safe for next season but a defeat will bring Southampton within one point and close to embarrassingly finishing below them. Bournemouth had a 10 point advantage in February. Watford v Wolverhampton Wanderers: match preview

These sides meet just three weeks after Gerard Deulofeu’s technical wizardry completed a spine-tingling FA Cup semi-final comeback and sent Wolves packing back to the Black Country with their tails firmly between their legs. Revenge is the name of the game then for Nuno Espírito Santo and brushing Arsenal aside on Wednesday should make that feel deliciously achievable. Watford will not want to surrender a four-point gap to Wolves in fourth though and will believe Deulofeu can serve up another masterclass. One to certainly catch on Match of the Day as both teams could easily challenge for the Champions League next season with the right summer recruitment.
