Premier League 2022-23 review: young players of the season

We select a few contenders for the Premier League’s rising star of the season – and invite you to have your say Also: Players | Managers | Goals | Matches | Signings | Flops | Gripes | Pundits | Photos When I wrote the equivalent article a year ago, Saka was again the first name on my list . I finished my entry with: “What is frightening is how much better he could become, especially if Arsenal invest in a proper striker and a right-back capable of overlapping and creating more space for Saka.” The emergence of Ben White at right-back and the signing of Gabriel Jesus have indeed furthered Saka’s development: he has scored 14 league goals and only Kevin De Bruyne, Leandro Trossard and Mohamed Salah have more than his 11 assists. Before the World Cup, many were unsure whether Saka had a place in Gareth Southgate’s first XI. By the end of the tournament, he was probably the second or third name on the team sheet. For club and country, the cheerful Saka is a smiling assassin and

Sean Dyche calls for big changes at Everton after another great escape

Doucouré goal secures win over Bournemouth ‘There is a massive amount of work to be done’ Sean Dyche called for major changes at Everton after their latest dramatic escape from relegation, and he insisted survival was only the first step in the rebuilding work needed for the club to act big again. Dyche enjoyed “getting the job done” courtesy of Abdoulaye Doucouré’s winner against Bournemouth but admitted Everton’s predicament in fighting a second successive relegation battle was no great cause for celebration. Everton’s win sent Leicester down, and Leeds were also relegated after a 4-1 home defeat by Tottenham. Wayne Rooney brings empathy and progress as DC United head coach

The former England captain is learning managerial skills away from the spotlight of his homeland. It could eventually help in the Premier League Of all the intimate details that surfaced during the Wagatha Christie trial , DC United fans most likely took note of one point in particular. According to text messages read out in court, Coleen Rooney never much liked Washington DC, which she called “a nice place to visit, but different to live.” Her husband, however, appears to have a much stronger connection to the city and its club. After two seasons with the club as a player, Wayne Rooney is DC United’s head coach. The former England captain was linked with several jobs – most notably at his boyhood club, Everton – after getting his managerial start at Derby County. A return to Major League Soccer, however, appealed most of all despite DC United sitting second-bottom of the Eastern Conference when he arrived last season – they’d also suffered their worst-ever MLS loss just days before

Premier League 2022-23 fans’ verdicts, part two: Leicester to Wolves

Fans review the season with one game to play: the stars, the flops and the moments that made them smile Part one : Arsenal to Leeds I truly think ours will go down as the most shameful relegation in Premier League history. Unbelievable levels of hubris, dither and delusion have turned a comfortably top-half squad into the most pathetic bunch of whipping boys I’ve seen in my 20 years as a season-ticket holder. A more activist fanbase would have turned Filbert Way into the toxic cauldron the club deserves. 0/10 Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/may/28/premier-league-2022-23-fans-verdicts-part-two-leicester-to-wolves

Luton promoted to Premier League after shootout victory against Coventry

This time Rob Edwards really could celebrate. The Luton manager had hared off down the touchline with four minutes of extra time remaining to celebrate what he thought was the winning goal in front of his side’s supporters, eating up 45 yards of Wembley turf, only to retreat to his technical area ashen-faced after glancing up at the big screen confirming Joe Taylor’s extra-time goal, which would have been his first for the club, had been disallowed for handball. Jonathan Panzo, on cold as a substitute, dawdled on the ball and Taylor, a 20-year-old making his sixth appearance, nicked it from the Coventry defender, but surged through on goal with the help of his right hand. Edwards covered his face in disbelief but after 140 minutes of gripping action an agonising penalty shootout followed. Eventually, Fankaty Dabo missed the crucial spot-kick as Luton clinched promotion to the Premier League at Coventry’s expense, capping an incredible rise from non-league to the top flight in nine yea

Folarin Balogun chose the US over England. He may have created a 2026 contender | Eric Wynalda

The Arsenal youth product is set to lead the attack for the Americans on home soil in 2026. He could be the goalscorer they have long craved The United States is one of fastest growing football nations in the world. Over the last 30 years we have been hoping, maybe even praying, for a savior. Every great football nation has a Ronaldo, a Neymar, a Messi. The US will never have that. Or at least we thought we wouldn’t. We’ve always had to succeed as a team rather than on the shoulders of a superstar. But it seems that our prayers may have been answered. Whereas the US seemingly always figures out the goalkeeping position and sometimes struggles to find a left-back, this generation may be the best collective we have to win the World Cup. Arsenal didn’t win the title for you Dad, but watching them try helped me

Arsenal winning the title in his memory was a fanciful thought, but in the end this team showed me something more valuable “Come to see the Arsenal … you’ve only come to see the Arsenal …” The refrain continues, as it always will, repeated in the treasured memories of watching Arsène Wenger’s fabulous team with my father, Ray, in their glory years. But we’re not singing along. Ray is most likely succeeding in not showing his delight after another goal is rattled in, while sharing a knowing look with my brother, Adam, and I. Meanwhile our poker faces will have undoubtedly left a little to be desired. How we basked in the choir’s production, almost silent partners muddled in with hapless home supporters safe and smug in the simple truth that we had, indeed, only come to see the Arsenal. Growing up as Arsenal fans in Telford made these clandestine trips a necessity. My brother and I fell in love with the club thanks to our dad’s passion and to an individuality built quickly through stan

Newcastle’s transformation and reconnection testament to Howe’s coaching | Andy Brassell

Club’s supporters’ minds will start to wander to potential trips next season after long-awaited return to Champions League The roar at kick-off, the roar that had been there in most of the previous 18 home games of this season, was maybe given a few extra decibels here. Added to renewed hope, present all season, was a touch of yes, this really is happening. Then came the moment, with fireworks being wedged into the tops of milk bottles, at the beginning of stoppage time, when Nick Pope was finally forced into some sort of movement to deny Timothy Castagne, to make sure it did happen. It came after one of the Newcastle keeper’s slowest days of the season, after what had often resembled a half-pitch, beat-the-packed-defence training exercise against a Leicester team largely too meek to threaten Geordie dreams. Do football teams with nothing to play for really end up ‘on the beach’?

As crunch time arrives for some clubs and others have nothing but pride at stake, we examine how likely focus is to falter You may have noticed that Napoli swept to their first Scudetto in 33 years this month with five matches remaining. You may not have noticed that the newly crowned champions lost 2-0 at promoted Monza last weekend. With the title secured, no European campaign to worry about and no record points tally to chase or international manager to impress for this summer, could Napoli’s players (and staff) be accused of being “on the beach”? Defined loosely as downing tools, the theory is not confined to football – as any teacher with a VHS in their hand at the end of term will attest – but with a few vital and not-so-vital matches left of the season, this is the area of most interest. Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! When the final whistle tooted and Luton fans invaded the Kenilworth Road pitch to celebrate reaching the Championship playoff final , our first thoughts turned to what all that orange smoke would do to the washing drying in the gardens backing on to the ground. Poor old Maureen and Cecil at No 169 were kept up for ages by the racket and woke to find their unmentionables smelling not of success but burning embers. Yes, nine seasons ago, Luton were calmly defeating Hyde, Alfreton and Salisbury as they pummelled their way to the Conference Premier title. They amassed 101 points to move them out of the non-league system and back on an upward trajectory but it was all pretty straightforward, meaning Maureen and Cecil got a good kip, regardless of the result. But not now. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/may/17/football-daily-email-luton-town

Gündogan double eases Manchester City towards title with win at Everton

And to think a trip to Goodison Park in the midst of a Champions League semi-final was considered an awkward assignment for Manchester City in their pursuit of a treble. The notion, and Everton, were dismissed with almost contemptuous ease as another immaculate contribution from Ilkay Gündogan and another goal from Erling Haaland took Pep Guardiola’s team closer to a third successive Premier League title. Gündogan showed why City have to secure his services beyond this summer, when his contract is due to expire, with two goals to follow up his double against Leeds last weekend. The midfielder’s first was a stunning piece of ingenuity that deflated Everton in their fight to avoid the drop. He then set up Haaland’s 52nd goal in all competitions this season before polishing an outstanding performance with a beautiful free‑kick beyond Jordan Pickford, leaving City needing three points from three games to secure the title. The series of poor decisions that sent Saints marching out of Premier League | Ben Fisher

Overhauling the squad and burning through managers ultimately led to relegation after failure to beat Fulham They say fortune favours the brave. Not always, as Southampton have discovered to their detriment. Relegation to the Championship ends a largely positive 11-year stay in the Premier League and erases their image as a model club, though in truth that was beginning to be scrubbed away a few years ago. From radically overhauling the squad with an influx of youngsters to replacing Ralph Hasenhüttl mid-season with Nathan Jones, untested at the elite level, on the merit of metrics and then giving Rubén Sellés the job until the end of the season on the back of a surprise win at Chelsea , a series of bold decisions by the club’s owner, Sport Republic, have badly backfired. De Gea is not the complete modern keeper but Manchester United should back him | Karen Carney

Goalkeepers are now expected to be experts with their feet as well as hands and to have a chess-like grasp of the best options Long gone are the days when the goalkeeper’s job was to make saves, catch crosses and kick the ball as far up the pitch as possible. The modern incarnation of the No 1 is a complex role that we sometimes underestimate. Alongside the shot-stopping, goalkeepers have to be great communicators, comfortable in possession and have in-depth tactical knowledge. There is so much emphasis on playing out from the back and keeping possession that coaches do not want 10 outfield players and a goalkeeper, they want 11 players who are really comfortable with the ball at their feet. When a modern goalkeeper has the ball they can play as an extra outfield player, meaning the centre- backs can move higher up the pitch and everyone moves up. Historically, centre-backs have the most touches and are in charge of starting the buildup but if the goalkeeper can do that, it gives a s

Ten things you need to know about Manchester United’s Marc Skinner

The manager is less familiar than his Women’s FA Cup final rival, Chelsea’s Emma Hayes, but his backstory is as interesting 1) The 40-year-old began his working life as a teacher at Solihull College and joined Birmingham initially on a part-time basis in 2006. In the course of a 10-year footballing apprenticeship, Skinner gained the Uefa A licence and served, variously, as Birmingham’s technical director, reserve-team coach and goalkeeping coach before finally becoming manager in 2016. During his time in charge he led the Blues to seventh and fifth-placed league finishes and an FA Cup final. 2) His partner is the former England defender Laura Bassett. The pair met when they shared under-14 coaching duties at Birmingham; their daughter, Saede, was born in December 2018. In the spring of 2017, Bassett was preparing to represent the Lionesses in the European Championship in the Netherlands when her club, Notts County, folded. It was suggested that she join Birmingham but Skinner ha

Back to the future: how managerial veterans have become all the rage | John Brewin

Hodgson, Allardyce and Warnock answered the call to save a club, their experience and knowhow vital in times of dire need It was known as “the roundabout”. Passing troubled Premier League clubs would pluck from the same, revolving set of managers to try to avert relegation. A similar carousel was on offer to those seeking promotion from – or safety in – the Championship. The names rolled off the tongue, leading to a state of affairs where Alan Pardew and Steve Bruce have each managed five Premier League clubs, and Mark Hughes six. But that trio, each around the age of 60 – Bruce and Pardew on career hiatuses, Hughes in the League Two playoffs with Bradford – are years short of qualifying for the management game’s newest ride, one that’s become all the rage. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Big Sam returns to Newcastle, Southampton are nearing their end and will City risk things at buoyant Everton? Sam Allardyce arrived at St James’ Park for his May 2007 unveiling as Newcastle’s manager by helicopter. Eight underwhelming months later, Big Sam was sacked – and immediately had to hand his top-of-the-range company car to security, leaving him requiring a lift home to County Durham in his press officer’s somewhat more modest vehicle. Allardyce’s hefty payoff from Mike Ashley, Newcastle’s then-owner, enabled him to buy a lavish villa on Spain’s Costa Blanca, swiftly dubbed ‘Casa St James’ but the current Leeds manager has not forgotten what he describes as a “massive, massive career setback”. Allardyce has played down any talk of old scores being settled when Eddie Howe’s Champions League-chasing team visit Elland Road on Saturday but there is little doubt that Allardyce would enjoy sticking a metaphorical two fingers in the directions of those travelling Newcastle fans whose

You can make a stadium into an inferno for an evening but leaving Edin Dzeko marked by a full-back at a corner is a recipe for eternal regret. “He’s a lot bigger than me, there’s not much to be done,” said Davide Calabria of the goal that set Inter on the way to a 2-0 victory over the Rossoneri in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. Football fans, the national anthem and a battle for who controls the public space | Jonathan Liew

Why would the Premier League ‘strongly suggest’ clubs mark the coronation? It’s all part of the eternal struggle for power “We’ve fought wars,” pleads Peter Shilton, his voice breaking with emotion. “People have died to protect our national anthem. Every country has its national anthem, and they’re very proud of it. And, you know, we’re one of the top ones. It’s sad that a small minority feel they have to do this.” Alas, I was abroad over the weekend and thus missed out on most of the piping hot coronation discourse that many of you will have enjoyed. New manager made changes and was rewarded with a dogged defensive display against dominant Manchester City Sam Allardyce has waited two years to manage a competitive match and the wait will go on for another week after witnessing his new Leeds side suffer at the hands of Manchester City but there were, in the end, positives to cling on to. The 68-year-old only had three days on the training ground to impart his methods. It would appear those sessions were attack v defence to prepare them for facing an inevitable afternoon of City domination at the Etihad but Leeds used maximum effort, Allardyce’s minimum requirement. Alex Morgan: ‘You learn so much more from losing than winning’

The USA forward on aiming for a third successive World Cup title, motherhood and why England are one of the biggest threats to the defending champions The US have won the Women’s World Cup twice in a row – wresting it from Japan in 2015 before beating the Netherlands in the 2019 final. Should they prove victorious in Sydney on 20 August, they will be the first men’s or women’s team to win three consecutive World Cups. But the road is treacherous. The word “unconvincing” floats perniciously around their preparations, at a time when women’s football has never been more competitive. Europe in particular is stronger than ever before. Danny Ward scored the only goal as Huddersfield made certain of their place in the Championship next season with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United. Erling Haaland has broken a Premier League record but not Dixie Dean’s

Haaland has overtaken Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, but is still some way short of Dean’s tally of 60 goals in the 1927-28 season By Paul McParlan for These Football Times There is a statue on the perimeter of Goodison Park that commemorates the most prolific goalscorer England has ever produced. He scored 60 league goals in one season and, more than 40 years after his death, is still the yardstick against which all strikers are judged. That man is Dixie Dean. William Ralph Dean was born in Birkenhead on 21 January 1906. Although the nickname “Dixie” persisted throughout his career, he detested it and anybody careless enough to address him as Dixie was reminded his name was Bill. As a kid he was known as “Digsy” due to a street game of tag, which involved digging your fist into the back of somebody you had tagged. When he started playing for the Wirral railway company’s football team as a teenager, establishing a reputation as a goalscoring prodigy, local press reports referred to hi

Erling Haaland breaks record to send Manchester City top with West Ham win

On 70 minutes the inevitable occurred: Erling Haaland stampeded forward, took Jack Grealish’s delivery and, with Lukasz Fabianski advancing, the goalscoring phenomenon feathered a spiralling lob over West Ham’s goalkeeper for a record Premier League goal No 35. It eclipsed the tallies of Alan Shearer and Andy Cole and, more vitally, doubled Manchester City’s lead against a doughty West Ham and by the final whistle it was 3-0: Pep Guardiola’s blue machine were on top again with five matches remaining in the quest to emulate Manchester United and claim a hat-trick of titles. Sordid saga of Manchester United’s sale looks like a kind of football endgame | Jonathan Liew

In a saner world it would be possible to decry the hawking of this institution as if it were a piece of knock-off jewellery The final deadline for bids to buy Manchester United passed on Friday night. Although in fairness, it feels barely more final than the first two deadlines that passed in February and March. Given the looseness with which the Glazers appear to regard deadlines, (“mufc bid proposal FINAL FINAL USE THIS.docx”) it is possible that when they finally take their leave of the club a lucrative career in column-writing awaits them. And so to the latest and hopefully the last round of a protracted charade that has come to resemble a reality television show in which viewers are sadly unable to vote off any of the protagonists. Indeed for a club so keen to recast itself as a global media brand you only wonder whether a little television jeopardy might have enlivened the process. Sydney FC romp to A-League Women title with grand final win over Western United

Madison Haley scores twice as Sky Blues claim fourth championship Captain Natalie Tobin and Princess Ibini also on scoresheet Not even 20 minutes were on the clock in Sunday’s title decider, but the contest already hinted at a Sydney FC procession. Twice within the opening stages, Mackenzie Hawkesby delivered pinpoint corners onto the head of Madison Haley, and twice the American striker made telling contributions; first to send a bullet header into the back of the Western United net and then to keep the ball alive for Natalie Tobin to nod home in her 100th game. After being forced to wait 179 minutes for their first goal of the finals series, the 2023 A-League Women premiers were cruising, and thoughts of an anxious wait for another breakthrough washed off them in waves. Any hopes United had of dragging their opponents into a war of attrition and eking out a win with sheer grit and bloody-mindedness were gone. The game was now to be played on Sky Blue terms.
