‘They want to give our pitch to boys’: girls’ football team fight to take up space

East London’s Vicky Park Rangers under-13s are mounting a legal challenge after being turfed out Vicky Park Rangers under-13s had a crunch game on Saturday. If the girls were going to top the league, it was a must-win fixture against last season’s champions. Preparations for the game had been far from ideal. A week after starting training on the Stepney Green astroturf, the council told them their time slot – which they shared with four other teams at Vicky Park Rangers, a grassroots club for 120 girls in east London – had been reallocated to a boys’ club. FSG sells minority stake in Liverpool and ends search for investment

US private equity firm Dynasty Equity pays about $100m-$200m Money used to pay off debt and will not go into January transfers Fenway Sports Group has sold a minority stake in Liverpool to the US private equity firm Dynasty Equity. The deal ends FSG’s search for investment and will be used to pay off debts. FSG and Dynasty, an investment firm that specialises in buying minority stakes in sports franchises, have not revealed the financial details of the deal but it is in the region of $100m-$200m (£82m-£164m). The investment does not equate to a “transfer war chest” for the manager, Jürgen Klopp. It will pay down bank debt incurred during the pandemic, capital expenditure on the new Anfield Road stand, the new Axa training centre and the repurchase of Melwood training ground, and acquisitions in the recent transfer window. Napoli had ‘no intention of mockery’ in Victor Osimhen TikTok video

Italian club stops short of apologising for video Osimhen’s agent has threatened legal action Napoli said on Thursday they never intended to offend their striker Victor Osimhen with mocking social media videos, but the Serie A champions stopped short of apologising to the Nigeria international. A team studded with England internationals need to kick on and secure European qualification after last season’s near miss To improve on last season’s fourth place and challenge for the WSL title. If missing out on Champions League qualification on goal difference last term hurt, Gareth Taylor and his players could cite mitigating circumstances. The summer of 2022 proved turbulent at the Etihad campus with four leading City lights exiting stage left and another retiring. While England’s Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh defected to Barcelona, their international teammate Georgia Stanway departed for Bayern Munich and Ellen White, the Lionesses’ record goalscorer, hung up her boots. By then Scotland’s Caroline Weir had also already left for Real Madrid. Given that context, a top-four place represented respectability. Refereeing controversies will not go away but Jenas should know better | Paul MacInnes

BBC pundit’s criticism of Rob Jones was a mistake – though the handball rule continues to confuse fans and managers alike Embarrassing. After another weekend of controversial VAR decisions, it would seem the only appropriate word. Yes, expectations are unduly high. Yes, everyone makes mistakes. But at the end of the day it’s not brain surgery: when Jermaine Jenas got his phone out to call the referee Rob Jones a “sh**house”, he should have taken a deep breath, counted to 10, then walked away. Jenas, the BBC pundit and pre-season face of – you couldn’t write it – an Football Association campaign to promote respect for referees, has made himself look permanently stupid. Just another weekend in the Barclays, you might say. But Jenas’s error-strewn social media message (full text: “Complete sh**house off a referee! They’re all ruining the our game!”) is hardly atypical. People are losing their stuff at refereeing decisions on a weekly basis. Continue reading... from Football | The Gua

‘We’re quite an oddity’: Exeter City celebrate 20 years of fan ownership

League One side host Luton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday but as their chair says: ‘I’m sad at how other clubs judge success’ It is difficult to imagine there are too many other clubs where the manager can freely walk home from matches, regardless of the result, or has been gifted a tailor-made oak coffee table by a fan. Better still, the table in Gary Caldwell’s office at Exeter’s revamped Cliff Hill training base, given to him by a supporter who is a carpenter, has an integrated tactics board and the pitch dimensions are to the scale of the surface at their St James Park home. “The supporters go over and above in terms of what they give to this club,” Caldwell says. Then again Exeter are somewhat unique given their status as a fan-owned club, the 20-year anniversary of which is this month, a cause for celebration and a move that has since prompted intrigue and praise in their model from rivals and government. Onana not finding his passing range, Guardiola’s strikers thriving and Sheffield United must up tempo Gabriel Martinelli’s disallowed goal at Goodison Park was another example of an offside law that has become almost too pedantic to function. The decisive action was a square pass from Gabriel Magalhães to Declan Rice that was intercepted by Beto. The ball ricocheted 40 yards in a completely different direction to Eddie Nketiah, who was running away from goal and gained precisely no advantage from being fractionally offside. He knocked it back to Fábio Vieira, whose through pass was finished majestically by Martinelli. The goal was disallowed because Beto’s interception, though deliberate, was not a “deliberate play” under the revised laws of the game . Instead of the deflection being one of the myriad variables that make football so compelling, Nketiah was technically offside. Nobody disputed that it was the correct decision, only the extent to which the law is an ass. When the FA’s E

Erik ten Hag unsure if he will ever pick Jadon Sancho for Manchester United

United manager says club needed ‘good standards’ ‘It has never been when someone makes one mistake …’ Erik ten Hag has admitted to not knowing if he will ever select Jadon Sancho to play for Manchester United again. Sancho is training away from the first-team squad after refusing to apologise for claiming the manager did not tell the truth regarding why the forward was not in the match-day squad for the 3-1 loss at Arsenal on 3 September. Ten Hag said Sancho had not trained to the requisite standard in the buildup to the trip. Asian Football Confederation may be sued for allowing multi-club ownership

Asian Champions League features three PIF-owned Saudi clubs Two City Football Group clubs cleared to play in competition The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is facing a potential legal challenge after seemingly ignoring its own regulations on multi-club ownership to allow three clubs owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to take part in the Asian Champions League. The Guardian understands that several leading Asian clubs are considering taking legal action against the AFC and its chairman, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa. The 2023-24 competition is due to begin on Monday, with Al-Hilal, who are the most successful team in the history of the AFC Champions League with four titles and now boast Neymar and the former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in their squad, facing Navbahor from Uzbekistan. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr and Karim Benzema’s Al-Ittihad also qualified after PIF announced in June it had secured 75% stakes in all three clubs and Al-Ahli, who

The more Brighton sell their best players, the better they become | Ben McAleer

Roberto De Zerbi’s team are top scorers so far this season even though they sold two midfielders for £150m in the summer By Ben McAleer for WhoScored When Brighton lost Graham Potter to Chelsea a year ago , there were understandable concerns about how the team would fare after his departure. Potter had taken the club to the next level following the dismissal of Chris Hughton in 2019. Brighton had narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League in Hughton’s last season, picking up just 11 points in his final 18 games as manager. Potter led them up the table, securing their highest ever league finish – ninth in the 2021–22 season – before he left for Chelsea. Potter’s decision to replace Thomas Tuchel could have grounded the Seagulls. Instead, they are flying even higher. Roberto De Zerbi took over from Potter last September and immediately set about outdoing his predecessor. Brighton finished sixth in the top flight last season, a new high for the club. Women’s World Cup final ref Tori Penso: ‘Male players chip in about everything’

The American official has been chased by angry fans during her career but she has no regrets over a career that has taken her across the globe As a teenage referee, Tori Penso knew her job would involve running. Yet taking charge of a heated game played between 16-year-old boys, she never thought running would actually mean sprinting to her car to escape three men enraged by her performance. Penso, though, can run fast. She made it to her car, locked the doors, fled from her pursuers, and then burst into tears. “I said that I don’t want to do this,” Penso, now 37, says. “I don’t need people chasing me. I can do something else.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/sep/15/womens-world-cup-final-ref-tori-penso-male-players-chip-in-about-everything

Wrexham’s Hollywood-backed show rolls on but locals are the real stars | Barry Glendenning

Documentary charting club’s return to the Football League under celebrity owners moves on to its second chapter A new season of Welcome to Wrexham is upon us, which means another avalanche of media coverage for this critically under-publicised football club is well under way. The second Guardian piece on this popular series to see the light of day in 24 hours since the broadcast of the latest episode chronicling the stewardship of Wrexham by a pair of charismatic do-gooders, this column is almost certain to prompt plenty of entirely unjustified eye‑rolling from supporters of other teams who keep on plugging away in the Football League’s lower reaches, outside the spotlight cast almost exclusively on a small city in north Wales. We would love this column to be different. We would delight in promising you endless amounts of cynicism, schadenfreude and snark. But unlike other football fans born with breeze blocks swinging where their hearts should be, we still find ourselves too enthuse

Steve Clarke has Scotland soaring but Premiership has little share in success | Ewan Murray

While the national team have stormed towards Euro 2024 qualification there is a disconnect with the domestic game Scottish football’s warm glow will extend to cartwheels and somersaults if England are seen off in the 150th anniversary match at Hampden Park. Success in Cyprus on Friday took Steve Clarke’s team to within touching distance of Euro 2024 . Acceleration under Clarke has captured the hearts and minds of a nation. It would be a mistake, however, to depict Clarke – an excellent manager – and his talented squad as reflective of the Scottish football scene. Clarke wants the best possible group at his disposal and can revel in the naming of nine English Premier League players in his squad for this double header. Kieran Tierney and Lewis Ferguson are plying their trade in La Liga and Serie A respectively. Half a dozen of those initially called up are based in Scotland, versus 14 from Clarke’s first contingent in the troubled times of 2019. Continue reading... from Football |

One change could take India to the football World Cup. Will they make it?

World’s most populous country do not currently consider those of dual nationality, missing out on talent from major leagues Fifa has already done its bit to help the national team of India, backed by a country with a population of 1.4 billion, qualify for the 2026 World Cup by increasing Asia’s automatic allocation from four to eight. Now there is growing pressure on New Delhi to make a change that would increase the chances of the men’s national team heading from south Asia to North America from slight to something more substantial: to allow overseas-born players of Indian heritage active in some of the biggest leagues of Europe to represent the Blue Tigers. Media and fans closely follow the fortunes of players of Indian origin (PIO) such as Manprit Sarkaria at Sturm Graz, Norwich’s Danny Batth, Dilan Markanday at Blackburn and Ross County’s Yan Dhanda, who would all be eligible to represent India if the country followed many others around the world. Saudi ‘Clasico’ drama shows promise but Pro League still work in progress

Al-Hilal’s 4-3 win over Al-Ittihad proved the big-money strategy is working, though doubts remain over attendances and depth Despite all the PR and marketing consultants hired by Saudi Arabia, the Saudi “Clasico”, which featured Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal, was not, for some reason, rebranded ‘Al Clasico’. Nevertheless, the 1 September clash was quite the way to sign off for the international break. Al-Ittihad, hosts, champions and the so-called people’s club from the Red Sea port of Jeddah, faced Riyadh royalty and took a 3-1 lead only to lose 4-3. There was international interest, which was expected given the raft of big-name signings made in the summer, and more quality, which, again, was hardly a surprise. Al-Ittihad, who conceded only 13 goals under Nuno Espírito Santo last season, were cruising before conceding three goals in the space of 11 second-half minutes, with Al-Hilal’s Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring an impressive hat-trick as the blue-shirted away fans did the Poznan. From Silva anger to added time: notes from the start of the Premier League | Will Unwin

Four games in and we can already see who is clicking into gear and who is not, with the usual fiery managers thrown in Four wins from four without too much stress sees Manchester City two points clear at the top. The football played under Pep Guardiola – and Juanma Lillo – is clinical, the players are almost robotic in their actions to best opposition. City average 68% possession per match as opponents are forced to sit back and hope for the best, although that tactic has come under scrutiny from Erling Haaland, who has already scored six goals this season. Considering City sold a number of players over the summer and have done limited work signing replacements, others might have thought there is a chance they can take advantage of this but Guardiola is ensuring standards do not slip, whether he is on the training ground or recovering from back surgery in a different country. When City finally get up to speed, opposition managers will be even more afraid. Continue reading... fro

In life and death, a football club is an anchor, a conduit for connections | Jason Stockwood

There is something uniquely powerful about football – a fact brought home to me when my mother died this summer I read Marc Stears’ book, Out of the Ordinary, this summer and recognised much of what he said in my own experience. The thrust of his argument is that our politics has become intellectually abstracted from how most people live and derive meaning in their lives. We have lost sight of the “everyday”, the joy that it offers in connection and community. I moved away from Grimsby at 18 and built an itinerant life, studying and living abroad. I eventually settled to work and build a family in London until my children started to develop “cock-er-ney” accents and I had to get them back up north “right quick”. Over those decades my love of Grimsby Town Football Club and the home game schedule created the gravitational force for my increasingly rare visits home. In the last two years I have much improved that frequency, being part of the ownership structure with Andrew Pettit. Align

Mechanical failure blamed for 2018 crash, which killed club’s owner and four others The pilot of the helicopter in the fatal crash at Leicester’s football stadium in 2018 told his passengers “I’ve no idea what’s going on” as the aircraft spun out of control, accident investigators reported. Inspectors said the crash, which killed the owner of Leicester City Football Club, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, three other passengers and the pilot, was a “tragic accident”. Mechanical failure, through a worn ball bearing in the tail rotor, led to a loss of control after takeoff from the King Power Stadium. Webb accepts Aké’s goal for Manchester City ‘should have been disallowed’

Fulham complained Akanji impacted Leno in an offside position Howard Webb: ‘Unfortunately it was not identified on the day’ Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer at Professional Game Match Officials Ltd, has admitted Nathan Aké’s goal for Manchester City in their 5-1 victory over Fulham on Saturday should have been disallowed. Aké’s header regained City’s lead to put them 2-1 up on the stroke of half-time but Fulham complained about Manuel Akanji being stood in an offside position and appearing to affect Bernd Leno in the goal. After a VAR review of the incident, the goal was given and City went on to win the match comfortably. Cesc Fàbregas: ‘Coaching is making me see the game in a whole new way’

I played at the top level for 20 years but still learn new things about football every day. That is the beauty of this game I love By The Coaches’ Voice for the Guardian Sport Network It’s a strange feeling, the last days of being a football player. Throughout my 20 years at the top level, I looked ahead to the day when I’d have to hang up my boots with a little panic. But in the world of coaching, I’ve found my passion. My role at the Serie B club Como 1907 is making me see the game in a whole new way, and it’s making this transition into life after playing a little easier. I had first started thinking about becoming a coach after turning 30. Three years later, I was playing for Monaco when the coronavirus lockdowns arrived. In France the league stopped completely. Suddenly, I was confined to my house with a lot of free time. I had four months at home so dedicated myself to learning new things and improving the way I see the game. Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Chelsea’s reliance on youngsters looks risky, Dominik Szoboszlai shines and Jordan Pickford finds redemption The early stages at the Emirates suggested Manchester United would continue their recent dismal record in away matches against the leading clubs, the visitors inviting a lively Arsenal on to them. But the deluge never truly came, and the diligent defensive performances of Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in particular – the former shackling Bukayo Saka expertly – were crucial in giving United a base on which to build. That could so easily have been the narrative as Erik ten Hag’s side looked far more comfortable in their own skins in the second half. But Alejandro Garnacho’s late strike being ruled out for the most fractional of offsides proved the game’s Sliding Doors moment, after which it became all about the excellent Declan Rice’s first Arsenal goal and a late breakaway of the sort that happens to any team chasing the game. Rice was understatedly the best midfielder on th

Updates from the big match at the Emirates (4.30pm BST) Jonathan Wilson: Arteta and Ten Hag struggle with upgrades Live scores! Follow all the goals as they go in across Europe Three changes for Arsenal from the 2-2 draw with Fulham. The lesser spotted Gabriel replaces the injured Thomas Partey, which means Ben White will move to right-back. Oleksandr Zinchenko is fit to start at left-back ahead of Jakub Kiwior, and Eddie Nketiah – who scored twice in this fixture last season, including a late winner – is preferred up front to Leandro Trossard. It’s much closer to last season’s team. Manchester United have four new signings on the bench, including Rasmus Hojlund. That means Anthony Martial starts up front. The only change from the win over Nottingham Forrest last weekend is at centre-back, where Victor Lindelof replaces the injured Raphael Varane. Kyogo Furuhashi gives Celtic win at Rangers to turn up pressure on Beale

Rangers may point towards the moment of first-half controversy which denied them a crucial lead in this Old Firm clash. This was, however, an afternoon where Celtic offered the more coherent football. The second coming of Brendan Rodgers has now been kickstarted by a marquee victory. On the balance of play, it was a deserved one. Kyogo Furuhashi proved the match-winner. In first-half stoppage time, the Japan forward raced on to a Matt O’Riley header – and straight through the Rangers central defence – before slamming beyond Jack Butland. Getafe make shock Mason Greenwood signing on transfer deadline day

Manchester United said in August he would leave The 21-year-old has not played since January 2022 Mason Greenwood has joined Getafe on a season-long loan following 19 months of inactivity at Manchester United, with the Spanish club paying no fee and making only a minor contribution to his salary of about £75,000 a week. The player was charged by Greater Manchester police with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault in October 2022 after allegations were made online. The charges were dropped in February when the Crown Prosecution Service said there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation from the investigation and new evidence had come to light. Greenwood denied all charges. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/sep/01/getafe-make-shock-mason-greenwood-signing-on-transfer-deadline-day

Messi-palooza would have never been possible if not for Beckham’s LA leap

Messi Mania swings through Los Angeles on Sunday night, the city where David Beckham’s leap of faith on a barely profitable league nearly two decades ago made all of it possible On Sunday night, Messi Mania makes its next stop when Inter Miami visit LAFC at BMO Stadium and the latest chapter of the great American soccer superstar experiment comes full circle in Los Angeles. In many ways, the latest away scene on Leo’s Magical Mystery (and Soccer Mythmaking) Tour is nothing new: an urban metropolis galvanized for a breathless, priceless night (see: Philadelphia, Nashville, and New York, er, Harrison, New Jersey , in recent weeks). ‘I regret it’: Spain men’s coach De la Fuente sorry for applauding Rubiales

‘I have to improve, we all do,’ says Luis de la Fuente Men’s coach ‘lacked bravery’ to contact Jenni Hermoso The coach of the Spanish national men’s team, Luis de la Fuente, has apologised for the “inexcusable error” of applauding Luis Rubiales during the speech in which the football federation president refused to resign over his having forcibly kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips at the presentation ceremony after the midfielder had helped Spain win the Women’s World Cup. De la Fuente said his actions were a product of the “psychological stress” of the situation he found himself in and that if he could go back he would behave differently, although he did not explain what he was applauding. Nor did he give an explanation for why it took 24 hours for him to release a statement criticising Rubiales’s behaviour, by which time the president had already been suspended by Fifa, the game’s world governing body. He also admitted that “I probably lacked the bravery” to contact Hermoso. Co

Rangers and Celtic look for fire of Old Firm collision to steady early jitters

Brendan Rodgers will hope his goal-shy Celtic can break their fast at Ibrox against a defence that conceded five in midweek Even in as fevered a football environment as Glasgow, the shifting of bragging rights in the days leading up to an Old Firm clash felt novel. Rangers supporters were purring with expectation after St Johnstone held Celtic to a scoreless draw last weekend. The return of Brendan Rodgers had already been punctured by a feeble League Cup exit at Kilmarnock. The blue half of the city were licking their lips at the prospect of Rodgers bringing his team to Ibrox. The changing of attitudes came after midweek events in Eindhoven. The manner of PSV’s 5-1 humbling of Rangers left Michael Beale grasping to defend his “new team”. It is one that displayed old failings. Suddenly the dynamic of Sunday’s derby changed once more. Both managers find themselves under intense scrutiny. Should Celtic prevail, patience for Beale from the stands will evaporate. Continue reading...

Summer transfer window verdict: how every Premier League club fared

After a busy deadline day, our football writers pick over the transfer window that was for each of the 20 clubs Arsenal did most of their business quickly and decisively, landing Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber early in the window . Long-term target David Raya arrived from Brentford later on and the squad seemed well set until an unfortunate injury to Timber, who will miss much of the season. It is the summer’s one black mark although Mikel Arteta has additionally run a risk by not acquiring top-quality backup for Bukayo Saka. Granit Xhaka was the biggest-name departure and they chose to cash in on Folarin Balogun, who has signed for Monaco. A number of other fringe players were moved on. Verdict: 4/5 Nick Ames Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/sep/02/summer-transfer-window-verdict-how-every-premier-league-club-fared

Gareth Southgate, England’s most polarising figure, is ‘just sticking to football’ | Barney Ronay

The manager has publicly backed down on inclusivity and social issues: unsurprising in a sport that left him nowhere to go There was something oddly gripping this week about re-entering the distinct and self-contained narrative world of the Gareth Southgate England press conference. These are the kind of events that disappear completely from the memory in between times. But one glimpse of that stern, avian profile frowning dutifully in front of a board covered with adverts and you’re hurled back instantly into a wholly realised place of tortured moral compromise, of penitent tactical self-justification, all of it ringed off-stage by the massed buttock-launching rocket assaults of English discontent.
