Leeds v Manchester City: match preview

For all Manchester City’s attacking verve it is unlikely they will be able to repeat the emphatic nature of Liverpool’s victory over Leeds in March. Leeds are a far more organised side under Jesse Marsch than the one brushed aside 6-0 at Anfield in the penultimate game of Marcelo Bielsa’s reign. The fact Leeds are also still in a relegation battle – despite taking 11 points from their past five games – will also make the task tougher for Pep Guardiola’s side who could have one eye on Wednesday’s Champions League second leg at Real Madrid. City thumped Leeds 7-0 at the Etihad in December but Guardiola would bite your hand off for a scrappy 1-0 win at Elland Road. Everton v Chelsea: match preview

Old acquaintances must be forgotten by Frank Lampard as he strives to keep Everton afloat against his previous employers, and the club where he cemented legendary status over a 13-year playing career. Having lost all seven away games under Lampard Everton, who could be five points adrift of Burnley come kick off, simply cannot afford to drop points in their three remaining home fixtures. Chelsea were wasteful in their draw at Manchester United on Thursday but possess enough attacking options to capitalise on the rising pressure at Goodison Park. Tottenham v Leicester: match preview

The only thing consistent about Tottenham this season has been their inconsistency. It is a little surprising they are still in contention for a top-four finish but those ambitions will wither unless they can string a run together between now and the end of the season. With a trip to Anfield next up and a potential showdown with Arsenal at home on the horizon anything less than victory against a Leicester side distracted by the return leg against Roma in the Europa Conference League on Thursday could prove terminal. Tottenham have failed to score in their last two outings so this could be the perfect opportunity for Harry Kane and Son Heung-min to prove they are the most fearsome duo in the Premier League. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Liverpool face a test from a fellow form team, Man City’s Madrid tie offers lessons for Leeds and no sentimentality for Lampard Only Liverpool have a better Premier League record in 2022 than Newcastle. After the midweek grinding down of Villarreal , a Saturday lunchtime trip to a bouncing, optimistic St James’ Park will be a test for Jürgen Klopp’s team. The hope in the north-east is that this can soon be a grand-slam clash between two of England’s leading lights, that Eddie Howe’s post-victory, all-hands photo opportunities take in wins over the elite. Michael Antonio strives in vain to add twist of unknown for West Ham | Jonathan Liew

The forward brings unpredictability to his side and offers their best chance of retrieving the deficit against Eintracht Frankfurt As the minutes leaked away in east London, the trickle of West Ham fans heading for the exits began to swell and thicken: first dozens, then hundreds and finally thousands. By full time there were white plastic seats as far as the eye could see. Perhaps this will come as no surprise to anyone who has ever found themselves trapped in the infamous London Stadium kettle, where the queues outside Stratford station can last well over an hour and you eventually begin to wonder whether you will ever see your family again. Still, with West Ham straining every sinew in search of a famous equaliser, it was a strange look. Certainly, you had to wonder at the risk-reward calculus. Cons: potentially missing a defining last-minute goal in your team’s first European semi-final for 46 years. Pros: getting a seat on the Jubilee Line. And as the home side slipped to a disa

Everton’s confused strategy has infected both their men’s and women’s teams | Karen Carney

The sides are third-bottom of their divisions after high spending, poor recruitment and managerial changes Poor decisions at the top seep down through all levels of a club. It is no coincidence that Everton’s men’s and women’s teams are suffering from a confused strategy and underwhelming performances. The two teams sit third bottom in their respective divisions after high spending, poor recruitment and managerial changes – the women are on their third manager of the season. Rafa Benítez was brought in before the start of the campaign to manage the men’s side but after not having the desired impact was replaced after six and a half months by Frank Lampard. The two managers have very different styles, leaving questions to be asked of the long-term strategy. The Spaniard likes his teams to be disciplined and defensively rigid, whereas at Derby and Chelsea Lampard was known for an attacking philosophy where his teams tried to outscore the opposition. At Everton Lampard has needed to ada

Premier League launches scheme to identify players of South Asian heritage

Boys of South Asian heritage ‘underrepresented’ at academies Plan is an acceptance that change is needed, says Kick It Out The Premier League says it acknowledges players of South Asian heritage are “significantly underrepresented” in English football, as it looks to bring an end to decades of lost talent. A new initiative known as the South Asian Action Plan, created by the Premier League in conjunction with Kick it Out, aims to better identify talent among boys of South Asian heritage at “foundation phase” age, between eight and 12 years old, and increase the numbers of players within the academy system. No pause for thought as Villarreal run into relentless Red hurricane | Jonathan Liew

Facing Liverpool was a quick-fire interrogation for the Spanish side, who suffered concussive red blows on a torrid night Van Dijk to Konaté back to Van Dijk to Thiago and in a flash Thiago’s gone and he gives it to Fabinho Fabinho to Robertson and he’s running oh God he’s running and Díaz is making the run Henderson is making the run you see Salah out of the corner of your eye but Robertson is cutting inside and there’s a big space between Juan and Pau so you close it but now Mané is free and Robertson crosses Díaz goes for it plus some other red shirt is that Mané and the ball runs out for a goal-kick and breathe you can finally breathe. Oh Christ, is that Jota getting ready to come on? This, insofar as you can even express it, is the experience of facing Liverpool at their best: football without punctuation marks or pause for thought, a dizzying stream of consciousness, a quickfire interrogation that you can barely process, let alone begin to follow. What Real Madrid do shouldn’t work but yet again they are still standing | Jonathan Wilson

Manchester City battering brought relatively minimal damage and there are troubling big-match parallels for Guardiola Manchester City had 60% of the ball. They had 16 shots to Real Madrid’s 11. They won on xG, taking a consensus of various algorithms, about 3.1 to 1.6. And yet they will go to the Bernabéu next week leading only 4-3 and, probably, with a grim sense of a familiar history being played out. Madrid have won four Champions Leagues in the past decade. They have rarely, if ever, been the best side in the world in that period. In Cristiano Ronaldo’s nine years at the club, they won only two La Liga titles. They couldn’t produce consistently enough to dominate the league and yet, somehow, in the Champions League, in what had always been their tournament, they got results. Pep Guardiola urges Manchester City to be more ruthless in Real Madrid return

Foden dazzles on big stage as defiant Real Madrid refuse to admit defeat | Barney Ronay

Manchester City could have sent the visitors packing in the first hour but Karim Benzema’s Panenka sets up Bernabéu return With a quarter of an hour gone at the Etihad Stadium, on a night when this entire lighted stage seemed to ripple and shudder, Phil Foden did something lovely. Haring off in pursuit of a high, lost, floated pass destined for the bleachers, Foden scampered on, feet battering the turf, calibrating angles and arc, and pulled that floated pass out of the sky like a man charming down the moon with a stick. His first touch cushioned it, his second fizzed it the through the middle of the sea of lost souls previously known as the Real Madrid defence. A muddle of flailing limbs almost bundled a third City goal into their own net. At which point this tie looked done, Real Madrid looked done, skewered, Foden in the middle of his own brilliant, decisive little patch of light. Seven-times competition winners Lyon perhaps go into this one as marginal favourites: they sit five points ahead of PSG in the league and can look back on a 6-1 victory over their rivals in November – although an early red card for Ashley Lawrence on that day may have lent the result a slightly freakish nature, a suspicion confirmed when the Parisians ran out 3-0 winners in January’s Coup de France meeting. Late, very late on Saturday, Joaquín Sánchez lifted the Copa del Rey into the sky in Seville, his city, having become the only player in Real Betis’s history to win the competition for a second time. It took 17 years and two days but Betis have the third cup in their history and their captain has the perfect last dance. He was there when they won it in 2005, and he was there again last night, two months off his 41st birthday as a dramatic penalty shootout delivered his dream. Burnley v Wolves: match preview

Burnley gave their chances of surviving a huge shot in the arm with a win over Southampton on Thursday and they may just have an opportunity to boost them further against Wolves. The scenario hinges largely on the likelihood of Everton losing against Liverpool which on the eye test is almost nailed on. If Burnley can catch a Wolves side that have not played in 16 days cold and snatch three points then they sneak into the last safe spot and will stay there if Everton do not win the Merseyside derby. Everton did beat Liverpool at Anfield last season, though, so Burnley will be watching between their fingers regardless of form. Crystal Palace v Leeds: match preview

Crystal Palace have had a largely positive first season under Patrick Vieira while Leeds have been a shadow of the side that took the Premier League by storm last year. It is slightly surprising, then, that only four points separate the two clubs thanks to Leeds’ upturn in form since the arrival of Jesse Marsch in February. Despite picking up 10 points from their past four games Leeds are still very much in a relegation battle, which highlights the trouble Marcelo Bielsa left the club in. Palace still need one more win to reach the magical 40-point mark and cannot afford to let the hangover from their FA Cup semi-final defeat linger. Norwich v Newcastle: match preview

Newcastle may not be mathematically safe but the bookies have them at 500-1 to go down so their recent purple patch has sealed the deal on another season in the top flight. Eddie Howe will be targeting a top-half finish and what better team to notch up a fourth successive win against than Norwich. Dean Smith’s side showed tremendous fight in defeat against Manchester United last time out but arguably Newcastle will pose a much more difficult proposition. They are a team in sync compared to one carried solely on Cristiano Ronaldo’s shoulders. A Norwich win would close the gap to six points from the last safe spot with five games to play, until Burnley attempt to jump out of danger against Wolves on Sunday. Realistically Norwich’s only hope is to focus on themselves, though, and snatch a win at all costs. Barnsley relegated as Huddersfield seal playoff spot with victory

Barnsley’s three-season stint in the Championship came to an end following a 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield on Friday night, one that also assured a playoff place for the hosts. Huddersfield – who have now won four of their last five games – moved to within just a point of second-placed Bournemouth in the charge for automatic promotion, although Bournemouth do have three games extra to play. Barnsley dramatically stayed up on the final day at the same venue almost exactly nine years ago but it was a different story this time around as they succumbed meekly. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Kevin De Bruyne is still key for Manchester City, Aston Villa are in familiar form and Brighton seek home comfort While their team was unconvincing and a little bit lucky in their midweek draw with Leicester and the win against Manchester United that preceded it, Everton fans will not care too much how their players perform, or how many goals go in, as long as they can keep hoovering up enough points to keep them ahead of Burnley in the table. On Sunday they make the short trip to Anfield and, given the respective recent performances of themselves and their hosts, it is difficult to envisage anything other than an emphatic Liverpool win. But this is a derby, albeit one where form only very occasionally goes out the proverbial window. While it seems impossible to make a case for Everton derailing Liverpool’s title hopes while taking a further step towards safety by snatching even a single point, far stranger things have happened. BG Liverpool v Everton, Sunday 4.30pm (all times BST)

Liverpool go top after Mohamed Salah torments Manchester United again

With the second-half restart delayed, bizarrely, while the referee, Martin Atkinson, had his microphone refitted, Manchester United’s players tried to stay on their toes by passing a ball about. The Kop responded with olés . It was a typically caustic judgment but one that felt entirely appropriate. To borrow another line from the Liverpool support, their arch rivals hardly touched the ball during what was another chastening defeat. After the 5-0 Old Trafford shellacking back in October, this was another occasion that showed Liverpool to be on an altogether different plane. Misunderstandings and misalignment mar Lukaku’s season at Chelsea | Jonathan Liew

The striker could still thrive at Stamford Bridge with time and love but has not been afforded either in a turbulent campaign There are games of football that feel like the inevitable product of their circumstances: system against system, the attacking and defensive patterns predetermined days in advance, the result telegraphed from the moment the first ball is kicked. Then there are the games in which Granit Xhaka runs the midfield, a mass brawl breaks out in the closing minutes and Eddie Nketiah scores twice against a team currently sanctioned by the UK government. Chaos, farce, or high entertainment? Probably a mixture of all three. As shirtless Arsenal fans clambered over each other in the Shed End, as a fuming César Azpilicueta remonstrated with some of the few Chelsea supporters who were left in the ground, it was tempting to write this off as a classic slice of freak Premier League, a crunch London derby with all the logic and ambience of a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie. David Moyes takes West Ham from flaky rollovers to resilient fighters

Manager has changed club’s identity and in a stunning Europa League win at Lyon they showed a new defiance and graft There was a knowing grin from David Moyes and a delighted chuckle from Pablo Fornals when the door to the press room swung open and the noise from outside floated through the air. “That’s why I’m in here,” Moyes said, sounding like a weary father apologising for his unruly kids disturbing the other passengers on a packed train. “Everyone is screaming and jumping,” Fornals said as the midfielder listened to the chants of “West Ham are massive” from his jubilant teammates. “The emotions are high. It’s a really lovely moment.” It had been one of those evenings. As Rednex’s Cotton Eye Joe blared around the away dressing room at the Groupama Stadium, Mark Noble sat by his locker and wept tears of joy after West Ham’s stunning 3-0 win over Lyon had taken them into their first European semi-final since 1976. “I don’t know where I am right now,” said Fornals. “The feeling is

Ralf Rangnick angry after Manchester United’s ‘humiliating’ loss to Liverpool

Hosts top of the Premier League after 4-0 win at Anfield Rangnick: ‘It is embarrassing, they are six years ahead of us’ A clearly unhappy Ralf Rangnick branded Manchester United’s 4-0 rout by Liverpool at Anfield as “embarrassing and humiliating”, with Jürgen Klopp’s team pulling two points ahead in the Premier League title race before Manchester City host Brighton on Wednesday. Rangnick made the surprise selection of Phil Jones in an unfamiliar three-man defence which was breached after only five minutes by Luis Díaz. Two goals from Mohamed Salah and a Sadio Mané strike completed a Liverpool league double over United with an aggregate score of 9-0. Thiago orchestrates Liverpool’s latest humbling of Manchester United | Andy Hunter

While his fellow No 6 Paul Pogba limped off, the Spain international left Anfield drooling with his midfield masterclass An aggregate score of 9‑0 this season is a fair representation of Liverpool’s superiority over Manchester United and the highest number of goals they have scored against their old rivals in a single campaign since 1895‑96, when United were known as Newton Heath. The tale of the two No 6s on display at Anfield encapsulated why such a chasm exists. In the United No 6 was Paul Pogba, an expensive, richly rewarded asset who lasted 10 minutes before limping off injured, perhaps never to be seen playing for the club again before leaving on a free transfer this summer. Premier League and FA Cup: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Liverpool are getting recruitment right, Newcastle have a new hero in Bruno Guimarães and Christian Eriksen can get better In the summer of 2020, Liverpool were big favourites to sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig before the move fell through when Jürgen Klopp could not assure his fellow German of regular first-team football. Liverpool fans have spent the last couple of seasons relieved that the striker chose Chelsea instead, his numbers way down on what they were in the Bundesliga. Werner remains a maddening but intriguing presence. Watch the denouement of the FA Cup semi-final. In the final 10 minutes, he overruns the ball to ruin a fast break, has the energy to get back and halt a Palace counterattack, is named man of the match, flashes a cross into the box with no Chelsea shirt in sight, drives into the area again to put the ball on a plate for Romelu Lukaku, who hits a post, and rounds it all off by ballooning a dreadful shot into Row Z. Chelsea sink Arsenal to set up Women’s FA Cup final with Manchester City

Women’s FA Cup semi-final: Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea Visitors score twice in second half against toothless hosts Second-half goals from Guro Reiten and Ji So-yun ensured Chelsea eased into the FA Cup final with a patient defeat of toothless Arsenal. In front of a sold-out Borehamwood crowd the Gunners struggled to deliver a single shot on target, with Chelsea’s defensive solidity allowing them to absorb the early pressure and that they would build on in the second half. There has been very little to separate the two London teams this season. Perhaps, Chelsea, as holders of the FA Cup and the league leaders, had the edge over their title rivals going into this match. The Blues dominated from the off in a 3-0 defeat of the Gunners in the 2021 final in December. However, despite Arsenal’s league position, one point behind Chelsea, Jonas Eidevall’s team have taken four points from their two league meetings – the first three coming from a thrilling 3-2 victory at the Emirates stadium on th

Bayern Munich face uncertain future after exit that wasn’t such a shock | Andy Brassell

Lewandowski, Neuer, Müller and Gnabry will surely not all sign new deals but Nagelsmann looks safe despite tactical flaw It was a shock but also a logical end point, the surprise that you knew could be coming. Although a visibly stunned Thomas Müller insisted after full time on Tuesday that “an [equalising] goal wasn’t in the air”, Samuel Chukwueze’s late goal for Villarreal that ousted Bayern Munich from the Champions League was a sucker punch via a predictable route. Although on paper Bayern had breezed past Red Bull Salzburg in the previous round, they had diced with danger – Kingsley Coman equalising late in the first leg after Salzburg had worn themselves out. Matthias Jaissle’s young team even had the better chances early in the Allianz Arena return before shooting themselves in the foot defensively. Unai Emery’s Villarreal had the experience and sang-froid that the Austrian champions hadn’t. Domestically in recent weeks, Bayern have offered Borussia Dortmund routes back int

Premier League and FA Cup semi-finals: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Manchester City and Liverpool meet again, while Ralf Rangnick looks a spare part It has been a physically and emotionally draining week for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola says City are “in big trouble” due to injuries picked up in their triumphant draw at the Wanda Metropolitano after Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker were forced off. Phil Foden spent most of the game sporting a bandaged head after a needlessly robust challenge from Felipe. Although some rejigging will be required for the second meeting with Liverpool in a week , the real challenge for Guardiola will be to refresh the team mentally for another season-defining match. The level of focus required at the Etihad on Sunday and in Spain on Wednesday will have been incredibly challenging for the players, many of whom played in both. An FA Cup semi-final is the kind of contest to sharpen the mind, although there will be no rest after. City face two games a week until mid-May so need to manage their bodies and minds carefully fo

Chelsea bidders wait for news after submitting improved offers for club

Bids from four groups have been given to bank handling sale Highest bid will not necessarily be successful, it is believed The four groups trying to buy Chelsea face an anxious wait after lodging improved bids for the club on Thursday. The merits of each offer are being assessed by Roman Abramovich and the club’s board, and Raine, the American bank handling the sale, is expected to take a preferred bidder to the UK government for approval early next week. Raine’s input is likely to have an influence on the Chelsea hierarchy’s decision and it is believed that the highest bid will not necessarily be the successful one. Abramovich, who was hit with sanctions after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, is also expected to take into account the club’s future wellbeing. Klopp’s selection risk pays off as Liverpool move step closer to final | Jamie Jackson

The manager made seven changes from the quarter-final first leg with Benfica but there was still enough quality on show The dream is alive, the dream is still tantalisingly feasible yet agonisingly remote. Liverpool are in a third Champions League semi-final under Jürgen Klopp and if a fantasy for a plethora of reasons but mainly its sheer, basic difficulty, a historic quadruple remains on for the German’s band that blends artists and artisans. On Wednesday it was the turn of the latter coterie. Well, kind of. Klopp rested seven of the star turns who started last week’s 3-1 first leg win at Benfica. There was no Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Thiago Alcântara or Fabinho. And this after their manager had said: “You can never feel entitled. Scampering scoundrel Phil Foden beats Diego Simeone at his own game | Barney Ronay

Manchester City’s bandaged-up academy star got into the Atlético Madrid manager’s head on a tense and fractious night And so it came to pass, with 92 minutes on the clock. A match that had simmered, all smouldering, corseted restraint, finally broke down into the nasty, snarky, theatrically overblown free‑for‑all that everyone at the Wanda Metropolitano always felt was on its way. By the end there was talk of a fist fight involving at least two players and the sight of helmeted police sprinting for the tunnel. There was genuine bad blood on the pitch, words and pointed fingers. Sunday’s thrilling 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium leaves City a point ahead of Jürgen Klopp’s team and for all associated with Liverpool, there may be a feeling that this season will replicate the 2018-19 campaign when both sides kept winning during the home straight and it was ultimately Pep Guardiola’s men who triumphed, 98 points to 97. Russell and Sarr lift Huddersfield to third as Luton pay penalty for miss

Huddersfield moved up to third in the Championship table after Jon Russell’s fine finish and Naby Sarr’s late header secured a 2-0 victory over Luton. The visitors were left to rue a missed penalty from their top scorer, Elijah Adebayo, in between Huddersfield’s second-half goals. Carlos Corberan’s men are four points behind second-placed Bournemouth having played two games more, but moved four clear of their opponents and have a six-point cushion in the battle for play-off places. Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola react to Liverpool's draw with Manchester City – video

Liverpool twice fought back to secure a 2-2 draw away to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday. After the game, Jürgen Klopp compared the match to a fight between two heavyweight boxers. 'The moment you put your hands down, you get such a knock in the middle of your face and then you have to get up again,' said the Liverpool manager, who felt his side caused City more defensive problems than in previous meetings.  The draw leaves City one point ahead men in the title race with seven games remaining for each team this season. Pep Guardiola felt that the result gives Liverpool 'a life' in the title race but insisted he was proud of his team's display. • Match report: Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/video/2022/apr/10/liverpool-manchester-city-klopp-guardiola-reaction

Jürgen Klopp’s Etihad nightmare: one win in six at Guardiola’s fortress

With a win needed on Sunday, Liverpool fans will be well aware of their manager’s grim Etihad record against Pep Guardiola Draw 8 November 2020 Premier League Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool Kevin De Bruyne’s missed penalty in the 42nd minute, only the second time he had erred from the spot, shaped a lockdown contest Liverpool went at with conviction, as Jürgen Klopp boldly selected Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané. With such an onus on unfettered attack it was little wonder Kyle Walker soon found himself on the wrong side of Mané and brought down the Liverpool winger for a clear penalty, which Salah smashed into the net. Mason Mount and Timo Werner double up as Chelsea put six past Southampton

Whether it was a Fortnum & Mason selection box or a stash of Freddos we may never know but after Thomas Tuchel said he munched his way through copious amounts of chocolate to soothe the pain of reliving Chelsea’s defeat to Real Madrid in midweek, his team displayed a ravenous appetite to make amends by bludgeoning Southampton. Chelsea picked their opponents apart, Timo Werner and Mason Mount scored twice and Marcos Alonso and Kai Havertz also struck inside 54 minutes. Luckily for Southampton, Chelsea did not overly exert themselves from there, presumably because by that point they were thinking about boarding Monday’s flight to Spain, the return leg in mind. Gordon strikes against Manchester United to boost Everton survival hopes

Everton do know how to win after all, and remembered the key ingredients just in time. They had good fortune in the shape of Anthony Gordon’s deflected winner against a sorry Manchester United but also the fight, organisation and resilience that had been lacking in their slide towards a first relegation since 1951. Frank Lampard has hope to cling to as a result. Sean Dyche questioned Everton’s ability to see out a victory after their self-implosion at Burnley on Wednesday. He was not the only one, with their quality at Premier League level open to scrutiny too. Leicester v Crystal Palace: match preview

The Foxes’ struggles for consistency in an injury-hit season for Jamie Vardy have seen them refamiliarising themselves with mid-table surroundings. Brendan Rodgers’s unfortunate assessment of his main forward’s prognosis (“It’s just when he’s striking the ball there is an issue”) suggests a run-in where Kelechi Iheanacho, Patson Daka and Harvey Barnes must weigh in more and improve on their combined tally of 10 league goals. Palace may be only one place better off having played two more games, but they were merciless in beating Arsenal, are unbeaten in seven and look like a side peering up rather than down. Gazza: story of a footballer mercilessly used and abused by tabloid press | Barry Glendenning

Documentary chronicles turbulent life from early days as gifted teenage midfielder to admission to the Priory It’s no great spoiler to reveal that, apart from Gazza’s opening and closing scenes filmed near a Hampshire fishing lake, it is comprised of archive footage. The subject of this two-part documentary, to be shown on the BBC, had been booked to participate in a Q&A after a London press screening on Thursday, but despite being spotted at the venue was a no-show. The appearance of the footballer’s latter-day incarnation proved even more fleeting in “real life” as it was on screen. Paul Gascoigne, we were told, did not feel up to facing the press and had adjourned to his hotel. While there is no suggestion his decision to abscond was rooted in any particular mistrust of the fourth estate, this film chronicling his stellar rise and subsequent fall from grace demonstrated that any misgivings he might have had would have been entirely justified. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

A stress test for John Stones, a big opportunity for Burnley and a chance for Arsenal to bounce back The slightest flaw could help the other win the supposed title-decider at the Etihad and the absence of Rúben Dias will be a worry for Manchester City. John Stones will almost certainly replace him for Liverpool’s visit. He spent most of Tuesday night in Atlético Madrid’s half as City were not forced to defend against a side who failed to have a single shot at goal. Liverpool will be the polar opposite on Sunday and Stones, alongside Aymeric Laporte, will need to maintain concentration against the most prolific attack in the Premier League, who have seven more goals than City this season. Adapting to different styles is the beauty of flitting between domestic and European football but such a drastic change could be hard to adapt to, especially for someone like Stones whose concentration can lapse. Liverpool may target Stones as the pressure will be on him to replace City’s most consis
