Gary Rowett expects Jack Butland to start Championship season at Stoke City

• Club have not received an offer they consider to be acceptable • Manager believes goalkeeper’s England chances will not suffer Gary Rowett has said he expects Jack Butland to remain at Stoke City beyond next Thursday’s summer transfer deadline and insists staying in the Championship will not damage the England goalkeeper’s international hopes. Stoke have not received an offer that meets their valuation of the 25-year-old, with Rowett confident Butland will remain Stoke’s No 1 this season. However, if Chelsea were to sell Thibaut Courtois, and there is concrete interest in the Belgian from Real Madrid , Stoke would brace themselves for a bid for the former Birmingham City goalkeeper who has won eight caps for his country. Football League managers to be shown yellow and red cards in new regulations

• New system will also be used in Carabao Cup • Managers could face long touchline bans The EFL will pilot an Ifab (international football association board) developed scheme that will see managers in the top four divisions of English football, as well as the Carabao Cup and Checkatrade Trophy, receive red and yellow cards this season in a bid to clean up touchline behaviour. Managers will receive yellow cards for incidents such as kicking a water bottle, sarcastic clapping or any other gesture that could be considered as attempting to undermine the match official. A red card would be handed out for actions such as violent conduct, spitting and stopping the opponent restarting play. If a manager accumulates four yellow cards, they would receive a one-match ban, eight a two-match ban, 12 a three-match ban and 16 would result in them going to Wembley to sit in front of a Football Association disciplinary panel. Subsequent fines, if deemed relevant, will be determined by the FA. Conti

Don't blame Salford City for spending. Blame the archaic promotion system

Salford City have made some big-money signings but, with just one automatic promotion slot available, who can blame them By James Kelly for These Football Times It’s 9:45pm on a Tuesday in April and a terrace in Kent is filled with Wrexham fans facing an arduous four-hour journey back to north Wales. Local children goad the departing visitors by holding aloft their fingers in reference to the 3-0 scoreline Ebbsfleet United have just inflicted. Further along the stand, a small scuffle breaks out among travelling supporters who are frustrated by their team’s inability to make the play-offs for a fifth straight year. As we wait to board the bus home, news filters through that the journey will be delayed because the driver has gone to help fix an engine problem with the team coach. Afforded time to contemplate, it dawns on me that, with the chance of promotion gone, the upcoming season will be Wrexham’s 11th in non-league. For a club with such an illustrious history, the prospect borde

Mauricio Pochettino unsure if Spurs will make any signings before window closes

Tottenham are yet to bring in any new players this summer Pochettino urged club to be ‘brave and take risks’ in the market Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham might not make any signings this summer after criticising the decision to close the transfer window early. Spurs, who traditionally do their business late, are the only club in the top six not to bring any fresh faces in so far and only have another eight days to do so before the window shuts on 9 August. The decision to bring forward deadline day was voted on by Premier League clubs, who opted to shut the window before the season starts, although it remains open for the rest of Europe. Eleven Sports: who is the new player in battle for sport broadcast rights?

Eleven Sports has already snapped up the US PGA, La Liga and Serie A rights as another new broadcaster enters the ever-changing TV sports landscape When the new season arrives there will be some changes to get your head around. New players, new managers, new shirts, new tactics and new haircuts. This year, there will also be a new broadcaster. On Monday, Eleven Sports announced it will be launching in the UK on 9 August. Its opening event will be exclusive coverage of the US PGA Championship. That will be followed by both La Liga and Serie A football, pinched from under the noses of Sky Sports and BT Sports respectively. For some fans, who already pay for one or both of those services, this development will be like taking a rabbit punch to the wallet. Back in Europe after 57 years and Burnley get to be Goliath for a change | Alastair Campbell

The lifelong fan travels to Aberdeen to celebrate the club’s return to European competition “One-nil to the Sunday league, one-nil to the Sunday league ...” There was a period on Thursday night when Aberdeen were leading us off the pitch as well on it. That particular piece of Aberdonian self-mockery was designed to highlight the “gulf” between the Premier Leagues of Scotland and England. A £3m wage bill was leading £61m thanks to a first-half penalty from Gary Mackay-Steven. Sam Cosgrove, a £20,000 signing from Carlisle, was leading the line for Aberdeen against internationals who earn that in a few days. If the “gulf” cliche had had a fair run-out in the buildup to this Europa League tie, so did that old favourite “Battle of Britain”, though football economics would say this was more David at home to Goliath with Burnley, a relative pauper alongside the six clubs above us in the Premier League, unused to the Goliath role. Sombre José Mourinho looks a beaten man before the season even starts

Manchester United manager should be enjoying the California sun but his constant complaining, valid or not, does not augur well for his club’s or his own chances in the months ahead An illustration of the pressure José Mourinho may be feeling, and the sombre mood he has been in during Manchester United’s tour of the United States, came at their UCLA training base earlier this week. The manager was due to sit down with a TV reporter who had travelled to Los Angeles for a pre-arranged interview on behalf of a prominent broadcaster. Yet just before it was supposed to happen, Mourinho decided to pull out. The journalist wandered off, only to be told that the Portuguese had changed his mind again, and the interview took place. The weird and wonderful world of football conman Karlos Kaiser | Rob Smyth

In an extract from his new book Kaiser! , which accompanies the film of the same name, Rob Smyth looks at some of the tricks used by football’s greatest con artist Eri Johnson, one of Brazil’s most famous actors, will never forget the first time he met footballing royalty. “The first time I saw Kaiser,” he says, “he was crossing the street with such swagger that I thought, ‘That guy must be one of the best footballers in the world.’” As a big football fan, Johnson had no idea who Kaiser was. But the way Renato Gaúcho greeted Kaiser made Johnson think he was in the presence of someone different. “I even regret not getting up back then. I apologise to Kaiser for that. I’d already met Pelé but I thought the way Kaiser walked was more distinguished. I should have got on my knees, because those legs were incredible!” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jul/27/the-weird-and-wonderful-world-of-carlos-kaiser-football-conman

While supporters appreciated the work and trophies Antonio Conte provided, there was a realisation – even before their victory in the FA Cup final – that his position had become untenable. Conte had lost the dressing room after a series of disagreements with the playing staff and Sarri had been identified as his successor some time ago. Sarri’s appointment represents a real departure from Conte’s more reactive approach and Chelsea fans can expect to see sweeping changes in playing style and formation – if not personnel. The delay in bringing in their man has hampered his chances of imparting his philosophy before the season begins, though the signing of former Napoli midfielder Jorginho will be a key step in that

Versatile England and Leeds United footballer described as ‘seven top-class players in one’ So versatile was the footballer Paul Madeley that in his 18 years at Leeds United during the 1960s and 70s he played in every position bar goalkeeper, prompting his team-mate Johnny Giles to describe him as “seven top-class players in one”. The ultimate utility player, Madeley, who has died aged 73, also appeared in seven different roles for England, although in general he was best known as a defender, especially in his later years. Madeley’s all-round prowess made him an indispensable fixture in Don Revie ’s best Leeds sides, with whom he won two league titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and two Fairs Cups during the glory years at Elland Road from 1965 to 1975. Football transfer rumours: Are Inter really eyeing a bid for Lionel Messi?

Today’s tittle-tattle is grafting Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Juventus rocked the Mill’s world in more ways than one. For starters, it looked set to give this short, but still oh so long, summer transfer window its headline move in mid-July. Also, it left Ronaldo and Lionel Messi floating around in different leagues, separated after nine long years, free from their constant, suffocating rivalry. It could be quite nice, thought the Mill. And now, this. Internazionale sense that Serie A might finally be back in vogue, and want to get a piece of that action by triggering Messi’s €700m (£622m) Barcelona release clause. That’s according to Tuttosport, whose latest edition ought to come with a sachet of salt attached. It does at least feature a quote from, er, Inter sponsors Pirelli, whose head honcho Marco Tronchetti Provera said: “I hope that Suning [Inter’s owners] can make a huge signing. Messi? How can you say no to Messi?” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https:/

It’s not just Mesut Özil. All diaspora footballers face the same conflict | John McManus

The hostility the Arsenal star has faced from Turkey and Germany epitomises the strain on migrant players who don’t fit the patriotic mould Reinhard Grindel is the president of the German Football Association, and clearly doesn’t like Recep Tayyip Erdoğan very much. The anger he displayed after a meeting in May between the Turkish president and Germany’s star midfielder Mesut Özil unleashed a huge row that culminated in Özil’s retire from the national squad yesterday . It was not the most savvy of decisions by Özil perhaps, posing for a photograph with a divisive leader who is accused of leading Turkey down the path of autocracy, and who has compared the German government to Nazis . Yet while Grindel might think he is taking a stand against Erdoğan, the Turkish government has seized on the incident as evidence of its long-standing claim that Europe is hypocritical and racist, and never treats Turkey fairly.
