Jürgen Klopp uses German lesson to keep Liverpool alert against Maribor

• Manager cites 1954 World Cup as example of game’s capacity to shock • Klopp warns Liverpool against complacency after 7-0 thrashing in October Long before Istanbul there was the Miracle of Bern and Jürgen Klopp believes Liverpool should heed a warning from history when they host Maribor on Wednesday. In the Champions League, the Liverpool manager insists, there are no foregone conclusions, even against an opponent humiliated 7-0 . Liverpool recorded the biggest away win in their European history against the Slovenian champions two weeks ago – indeed the biggest by any English team away in the European Cup – but Klopp claims he will be content with a 1-0 victory in the return. He cited West Germany’s 3-2 win over Hungary in the 1954 World Cup final as a reason why. Germany secured their first World Cup not only after trailing 2-0 in Bern but having lost 8-3 to the Mighty Magyars in the first round of the tournament. Klopp will use a 63-year-old history lesson to guard against comp

Roma feast on Chelsea’s frailties to give Antonio Conte further headaches

This will have left Antonio Conte pained. The Italian must have privately relished bringing his English champions back to his homeland in the hope they would dazzle in an arena where, on his last visit, he had overseen the Azzurri ’s dismantling of Norway. Yet everything about this return to Rome was nightmarish, with Chelsea shredded at the back and profligate up front. Leadership of this group has been lost. The only consolation, and it will feel considerable in the cold light of day, was Atlético Madrid’s failure to overcome Qarabag’s 10 men in Spain. Manchester United make Mile Svilar suffer again despite his penalty save

Manchester United are a technically point away from the Champions League knockout phase with this fourth win from four Group A matches. This is a fine position but José Mourinho will not have aided the struggling Romelu Lukaku’s confidence after insisting Daley Blind take United’s second penalty of the night. On 78 minutes Marcus Rashford’s fine burst claimed the spot-kick but when Lukaku stood over it at first he did not give way. This caused Mourinho annoyance before, after a brief intervention from Ander Herrera, Blind did step up to smack the ball home. Celtic out of Champions League after Javi Martínez header for Bayern Munich

Celtic will reflect on a bittersweet night. This was a rousing performance, one which endorsed improvement as heralded by Brendan Rodgers but produced no tangible reward. Bayern have progressed to the Champions League’s last 16 but Celtic cannot. Celtic deserved at least a point. The upshot, still, is one Rodgers and his players would have taken at the outset of Group B: Celtic remain in pole position for a Europa League place with two games to go. For all their defensive aberration here, Celtic performed with a style and attitude which saw them deservedly applauded from the field even in defeat. Ghosting Rio Ferdinand: how I got the football legend to relive the hardest days of his life

When Rio Ferdinand asked her to ghost-write his life story, Decca Aitkenhead knew she would have to ask the reticent star painful questions about his wife’s death and raising their children alone. She recalls a surreal, emotional month on his sofa One morning in May, a car ferried me across leafy suburban Kent to an executive gated community, through three sets of security barriers, past driveways occupied by Bentleys, to the door of a neo-Queen Anne mansion. “Bloody hell,” the driver choked. “Who lives here?” “No one,” I mumbled idiotically, trying not to look equally wide-eyed as I wondered what I had signed myself up for. Five months later to the day, I opened the newspapers to see that what I had signed up for was on the bestseller list. It has been, from day one to the end, a fabulously surreal experience. Football transfer rumours: Isco to Manchester City from Real Madrid?

Today’s gossip has been slow-cooked so that it melts in the mouth Pep Guardiola is determined to make his Manchester City midfield the busiest creative offering since Jackson Pollock’s Convergence in 1952 . To do so he’ll try to steal away Isco from Real Madrid using the power of his personality (and his club’s vast reservoir of Abu Dhabi cash, of course). Apparently, he’s on Guardiola’s ‘top-five’ footballers list, which presumably he has stuck on his fridge door at home. Girona offer Catalans pride and escape after downing powerhouse Madrid | Sid Lowe

As the crisis in Catalonia reached fever pitch outside the ground, the minnows of Girona beat Real Madrid in a symbolic but richly-deserved win Pablo Machín stood by the table football in the middle of the Montilivi dressing room where two teams lined up rigidly in 3-3-4, one in blue, the other in white, and told his players – the real ones in red – they should be proud. He didn’t speak for long, just a few seconds standing there among the socks, bandages and bottles on the floor, and when he finished there was applause from everyone and for everyone. There was no cava, Girona’s coach said, but there was a celebration and, he admitted, euphoria. “Maybe it’s the coach’s job to calm things down, but I want them to enjoy this,” he explained. This was big, after all, and they had earned it. So they did enjoy it, hugging and cheering. “The manager told us it would be a party,” midfielder Álex Granell said. “I think he meant for the fans, but in the end it was for us too.” Outside, support

Serie A's top five maintain frightening pace, with Milan no match for Juve | Paolo Bandini

Juventus’s Gonzalo Higuaín proved the difference at San Siro as the top five teams’ dominance continued, as did talk of reducing Serie A from 20 teams The debate about how many clubs should compete in Serie A never really went away. Italian football’s top division has expanded and contracted many times in almost 90 years of existence. At its smallest, it has contained only 16 teams, and at its largest, an awkward 21. Right now, we are back at 20 but there has been a growing clamour to reduce that figure. The Italian Football Federation’s own president, Carlo Tavecchio, has repeatedly stated his belief that 18 teams would be “perfect”. On the evidence of this season so far, you could make a case for more swingeing cuts. Keita Baldé is slowly helping Monaco forget about Kylian Mbappé

Keita Baldé has provided two goals and two assists in his last four games for Monaco, showing there is life after Kylian Mbappé for the Ligue 1 champions By Adam White and Eric Devin for Get French Football News Keita Baldé Diao, the Senegalese forward who joined Monaco from Lazio this summer for €30m, was prepared to be compared with Kylian Mbappé. “I was expecting it,” he said recently when asked about Mbappé. “We’re both young players. But I’ve come to write my story, to play my game. I don’t want to be compared with anyone. Bayern Munich back in customary spot but wait for real Bundesliga test | Andy Brassell

The returning Jupp Heynckes has breathed new life into Bayern, but with their rivals spluttering, it is hard to judge by exactly how much When Jupp Heynckes agreed to retake the position of head coach at Bayern Munich for the remainder of the season, it seemed impossible he could enhance his reputation. Just over three weeks later – five games, five wins, and only one goal (a penalty) conceded – and maybe he has begun to do just that, at the age of 72. All is far happier in the house of Bayern, certainly, with Saturday’s 2-0 win over Leipzig taking the champions back to the top of the table, in combination with Dortmund’s loss at Hannover, before Der Klassiker at Westfalen next weekend. Bayern travel with a three-point lead, having trailed by five when Heynckes retook the reins. Football clubs splash out for players, so why not for managers? | Sean Ingle

While leading European clubs will spend crazy money on mediocre players there is a reluctance to adopt a similar approach to entice the best coaches No sooner had Ronald Koeman been sacked by Everton than a predictable troupe of has-beens, hopefuls and cast-offs were plonked among the favourites to replace him. Inevitably David Moyes was high on the bookies’ list, despite a triad of failures at Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland. So was Sam Allardyce, a roast-beef-and-potatoes option for a club striving for cordon bleu . Before Sunday’s defeat at Leicester, the academy and under-23 coach, David Unsworth, even became the frontrunner, despite a handful of games on his managerial CV. Whatever happens at Goodison Park it is a cast-iron bet that some of these men will be in the frame the next time a Premier League job comes up – and the one after. That is how the system goes. Football transfer rumours: PSG's Thomas Meunier to Manchester United?

Today’s tell-all keeps a close watch on this heart of mine Belgium right-back Thomas Meunier is getting itchy feet at Paris Saint-Germain, where he has started only six of the club’s 11 league matches and is yet to feature in the Champions League. Increasingly tired of playing second fiddle to Dani Alves, Meunier would be open to a move away from the French capital and speculation abounds that Manchester United are preparing a £30m offer for the 26-year-old, who is contracted to PSG until 2020. So famous that the club’s former director of football Patrick Kluivert failed to recognise him while travelling in the same car as the player on a pre-season tour shortly after he’d signed for the club, Meunier has since become well known enough to have attracted interest from Real Madrid and Juventus, as well as United. He could move in January. Related: David Unsworth left wondering what he’s got himself into as Everton caretaker | Sachin Nakrani Continue reading... from Football | The

Barely a week goes by when the New York City FC head coach is not linked with a vacancy either in Europe or the United States. Even before Bruce Arena resigned after failing to lead USA to next summer’s World Cup finals, Vieira was touted as a possible replacement, leading the Frenchman to issue to a quick and firm denial regarding his interest in the position. This came soon after Vieira revealed he had tentative talks with Ligue 1 side St Etienne in the summer. The rumours and speculation will only increase if Vieira leads NYC FC to the MLS Cup this year, in just his second season as a professional head coach. How Howard Wilkinson set English football on course for its golden summer

Under-17s World Cup glory just the latest reward for reforms introduced 20 years ago by the last homegrown manager to win the league It was a drastic decision that, if you had only listened to the cynics at the time, was doomed to failure. Yet a little more than 20 years after the Football Association’s then technical director Howard Wilkinson proposed that responsibility for the national under-15 and under-16 teams be taken away from the English Schools FA as part of his ambitious Charter for Quality, Saturday’s events at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata should have provided the final confirmation that the last English manager to win the league was on to something. The thrilling 5-2 victory against Spain in the Under-17 World Cup final provided the perfect ending to an unprecedented year of success for the FA’s age-group teams. Since Steve Cooper’s side were beaten by the same opponents on penalties in the final of the European Championship back in May, England have also been crown

Football League: Wolves slip at QPR as Shrewsbury's unbeaten run finally ends

Sheffield United stayed on top of the Championship, Bolton suffered late heartbreak at Craven Cottage while the teenage Harvey Barnes scored a stunner • Sheffield United started the day on top of the Championship following their Yorkshire derby success against Leeds on Friday night – and the surprise was they were still leading the pack on Saturday evening. Wolves lost for only the third time this season, going down 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers after Matt Smith came off the bench to head an 81st-minute winner. Eden Hazard’s solitary strike secures victory for Chelsea over Bournemouth

Antonio Conte fidgeted his way anxiously through the final stages here, a picture of agitation on the touchline as Bournemouth finally roused themselves to discomfort the champions as best they could. Yet, by the end, the sense lingered that Chelsea’s domestic campaign is returning to an even keel. Successive league wins have served to lance the tension. There is an admirable side to the Manchester United manager’s uncompromising approach as he ignored criticism and set up his team to wear down Tottenham And then, of course, the sun also rises. Bristol City’s Milan Djuric rises to the occasion as Sunderland’s dire run continues

The now seemingly interminable wait for Sunderland’s first home win since last December endures. This latest defeat leaves Simon Grayson under severe pressure before Bolton Wanderers’s visit on Tuesday night for what already looks ominously like a relegation six-pointer. He may have inherited a poisoned chalice on Wearside, but after only one Championship win in 14 attempts Sunderland’s manager knows he is fast running out of time to put things right. Aaron Ramsey seals Arsenal comeback for win against Swansea

Swansea City have been a bogey team for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. On six previous Premier League visits, they had won three and drawn one and, when Sam Clucas put them in front early on, it was possible to fear that a long afternoon lay ahead for Arsène Wenger and his players. The nerves jangled among the home supporters during the first half and, but for a one-on-one block from Petr Cech that denied Jordan Ayew, Swansea would have been two goals to the good at the break. Manchester United’s Anthony Martial rises to occasion to sink Spurs

Even without Harry Kane, Tottenham held the upper hand for much of this closely contested game, though Manchester United are no mugs under José Mourinho and they stuck grimly to their task to pick up an important win with a late Anthony Martial goal. That is not to suggest the game itself was grim, though scoreless for 81 minutes it was nothing like as barren as United’s draw at Anfield a fortnight ago but two good sides were cancelling each other out until Spurs were undone by a long ball from the back. Both sides employed similar formations with three central defenders, though Tottenham’s three were that little bit better at playing out from the back. The visitors made better use of the ball all over the pitch throughout the first half, in fact, with Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Harry Winks all possessing a subtlety and invention in passing that the home side mostly lacked. Spurs obviously missed Kane getting on the end of their best moves though at least they were producing som

Kenny Miller’s two goals earn Rangers fine away day at Hearts

For Rangers, life without Pedro Caixinha but again featuring Kenny Miller saw an immediate upturn in fortunes. Graeme Murty’s credentials to succeed Caixinha, who was sacked on Thursday, haven’t been taken altogether seriously but the caretaker did his career prospects no harm whatsoever by overseeing a comfortable success over Heart of Midlothian. Murty and Rangers are due further credit for the fact they retrieved these three points from the position of a goal behind. The truth involving Caixinha’s clash was Miller, the subsequent ostracisation of the striker, is still to fully emerge. Murty’s first act was not onto to recall Miller but hand him the captain’s armband for the visit to Murrayfield; as used because Tynecastle Park is still undergoing redevelopment. Miller responded by scoring two and creating a third as Rangers cancelled out a stunning opener from Kyle Lafferty. Asmir Begovic: ‘You have a life and – boom – it’s turned upside down’ | Nick Ames

The Bournemouth goalkeeper, who as a child fled war-torn Trebinje, is set for a Premier League milestone against his former club Chelsea on Saturday The haziest of memories gave way to something starkly vivid when, in 2008, Asmir Begovic returned to Bosnia‑Herzegovina for the first time. He had not been back to Trebinje, the town of his birth but a place of which he had next to no recollection, since leaving at the age of four while war ripped apart the country and it took the sad occasion of his grandfather’s funeral for the scale of his family’s loss to make sense. “I saw where we used to live, saw where the house was basically broken down and collapsed; it just didn’t exist any more,” he says. “Difficult, difficult things to see. Can Liverpool unlock riddle of the real life Oxymoron? | Barney Ronay

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all wanted him in the summer but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is still no nearer to holding down a regular first-team place At the height of the cold war, the Soviet Union developed a deep institutional suspicion towards denim jeans. Jeans and jean‑related items were seen as an emblem of western‑style decadence, a symbol for the younger generation of intoxicatingly subversive belief in modernism, artistic freedom and comfortable riveted trousers. There were heavy penalties for those caught up in the trade of blackmarket denim, what the police called “jeans crimes”. But this was a war the authorities always looked like losing. In 1975 prohibition was lifted. The ministry of light industry announced instead that it would start to produce its own approved communist denim, tailored from highest-quality clothing-cardboard and available in a range of superior citizen-fashion styles. Is José Mourinho’s negativity a product of his failure to make it as a player? | Jonathan Wilson

Manchester United manager’s often defensive tactics and desire for total control of his players could stem from a sense of being an outsider It is a sad indication of the recent state of Liverpool that over the past couple of weeks they have seemed more significant as a test case for others than in and of themselves. José Mourinho took his Manchester United side to Anfield and, as he waited and waited and waited for the game “to break”, the watching world waited and waited and waited for something vaguely resembling action to break out. It didn’t and the game finished 0-0 . Given Liverpool’s vulnerabilities and given Manchester City’s remarkable form, that felt even at the time like two points needlessly squandered. A week later it felt even more like two points handed away as Tottenham Hotspur ruthlessly exploited Liverpool’s defensive problems to win 4-1 at Wembley . It’s not quite comparing like with like, of course – it will always be harder for United at Anfield than for Tottenh

Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

David Wagner can increase heat on friend Jürgen Klopp, will José Mourinho bow down to Spurs and are Southampton about to unleash Sofiane Boufal? Manchester United finished 14 points behind Spurs in Louis van Gaal’s last campaign. Under José Mourinho last season, they finished 17 points behind Spurs. Now, after nine games of this season, the clubs have the same points tally. But Mourinho’s approach to Saturday’s match will tell whether he still believes there is a big gap between them. If he opts to play like an underdog at Old Trafford, even with concerns about the fitness of his defenders, then it will show his deference to Mauricio Pochettino’s strong and enterprising team and raise further questions about whether he is the right manager to get the best out the attacking talent at his disposal. The band plays on but dissatisfaction with the Premier League is growing | Jacob Steinberg

Many top-flight clubs have been stripped of the right to dream of anything grander than existing. The result is boredom in some places and anger in others Summer is a time of optimism for fans. The combination of new signings, managers and beginnings is the recipe for a heady, fantastical concoction. Forget about everything that went wrong in the 12 months before, the slate has been wiped clean. Hope trumps cynicism and everything feels possible as the season gets under way, at which point reality begins to take hold. This isn’t new. One of the more counterintuitive joys of fandom is revelling in negativity to the point where it almost becomes a competition to see who can absorb the most comic ineptitude. Treating incompetence with humour is a way to maintain sanity, like Cheryl David sighing and rolling her eyes at her husband’s latest bout of calamitous behaviour in Curb Your Enthusiasm. After a week of Ultras-related outrage and public relations damage in Italy, the only surprise, regrettably, is that anyone should still be surprised Of all the stadiums Lazio could visit on Wednesday, it had to be the Renato Dall’Ara. Their week had begun amidst outrage after Ultras affixed anti-semitic stickers, including mocked-up images of Anne Frank in a Roma shirt, to plexiglass barriers inside their own Stadio Olimpico. Now supporters travelling to their away game against Bologna would occupy a stand dedicated to the memory of Arpad Weisz. A Jewish Hungarian, Weisz came to Italy late in his playing career and stayed on afterwards to move into coaching. He remains the youngest manager ever to win Serie A, having led Inter – then known as Ambrosiana, following pressure from the fascist government to adopt a more ‘Italian’ branding – to the Scudetto at 34. Weisz would claim two further titles with Bologna, before fleeing the country following the introduction of racial laws. He w

The 10 most improved players in the Premier League so far this season

Football transfer rumours: Danny Rose and Luke Shaw to swap clubs?

Today’s tell-all is enjoying the season of mist and mellow fruitfulness Why can’t everyone just get along? It’s a question the Rumour Mill ponders on a daily basis, as it surveys the news over its morning mug of bracing custom blend Mountain Morning Organic, to be confronted with one sad story of discord and disharmony, after another, with few being more heart-rending than the apparent frostiness between José Mourinho and Luke Shaw . Previously the world’s most expensive teenager, Shaw is now fourth or fifth choice left-back at Manchester United and suffered his latest humiliation upon being given only four minutes of action in the knockings of a Carabao Cup match his side had already put to bed against Swansea City. Yesterday the Guardian reported that Mourinho is “understood to be unhappy with Shaw’s attitude” , while today the story has moved on with the Times informing that the pair are no longer on speaking terms and Shaw may seek a move elsewhere in January. André Ayew kickstarts West Ham revival to dump Tottenham out of Carabao Cup

West Ham United produced a sensational comeback at Wembley Stadium, scoring three times in the space of 15 second-half minutes to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory that propelled Slaven Bilic’s team into the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup. For Bilic, struggling to save his job past the weekend, this was a rousing show of strength from a much-changed team that had looked shot at half-time as Spurs scored twice while barely flexing their muscles. Instead they surged back and produced one of the great Carabao Cup nights, led by a ragged but rousing captain’s performance from Mark Noble, and some energetic opportunism from Andre Ayew, who scored twice. The Fiver | Teams packed with young talent gaining priceless experience

In today’s Fiver: Mr Roy can’t win anything with kids. Perhaps England can Seven years ago, an experimental Liverpool team featuring 19-year-old Dani Pacheco, 18-year-old Danny Wilson, 19-year-old Nathan Eccleston, 18-year-old Jonjo Shelvey and 18-year-old Tom Ince crashed out of the Milk Cup at home to Northampton Town . At which point their experienced manager would have thrown a protective arm round his young charges, right? “These players have to accept responsibility,” raged the big boss man, 63. “I accept responsibility for changing a lot of players in the team, I did it because I honestly thought the players I put on the field were good enough to win the game and they weren’t. I am just bitterly disappointed that the team I had so much faith in did not repay that faith.” Oh flaky, deceitful, treacherous teenagers! How could you mistreat him so! With the volume pushed to maximum, he felt safely cocooned in his own little world. FA relies on its traditional approach to crisis – ‘If we lie low, this will go away’ | Marina Hyde

After their Dunning-Kruger kabuki performance in front of the culture media and sport select committee, the FA’s top brass are now keeping their heads down Try not to allow yourself to be encouraged by the fact that former FA board member Heather Rabbatts thinks that thinks technical director Dan Ashworth’s job is “untenable” . I imagine the FA sees it as very tenable. Tenable is one of those words that technically exists, but for which there would obviously be better and more popular substitutes. Making it very like Dan Ashworth, in fact. Other tenables currently include FA chief executive Martin Glenn and FA chairman Greg Clarke, whose performance alongside Ashcroft in front of the culture media and sport select committee last week ranked as a horror show even by the standards of their organisation’s hall of shame. A sort of Dunning-Kruger kabuki performance, the event served primarily as a reminder of the sheer number of working hours that have been devoted by the FA down the year

Send your questions and answers to knowledge@theguardian.com or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU “Since the advent of the League of Ireland in 1921, 10 sides bearing the city name of Cork have appeared in the League’s top two divisions,” writes Phil Farrell. “They are Cork FC (1930-38), Cork Bohemians (1932-34), Cork City I (1938-40), Cork United I (1940-48), Cork Athletic (1948-57), Cork Celtic (1952-79), Cork Hibernians (1957-77), Cork Alberts (1977-79), Cork United II (1978-82), and Cork City II (1984-present). Football rumours: Marco Reus to Manchester United or Arsenal?

Today’s gossip is looking for a fresh start He may have steered Southampton to an eighth place finish in the Premier League last season, but in doing so Claude Puel seemed to leave regulars at Saint Mary’s decidedly underwhelmed by the manner in which he went about his work. The Frenchman’s on-pitch tactics were widely reported to be a reflection of his personality off it: quietly efficient but decidedly dull. Ultimately, they cost him his job in the summer, despite the decent league position and an appearance in a League Cup final Southampton were unlucky not to win. Nevertheless, it seems Leicester City are of the opinion that Puel’s is the safe pair of hands the club needs to steady a ship that had begun listing under Craig Shakespeare and he has emerged as a surprise contender to take over at the King Power Stadium. The 56-year-old is the new odds-on favourite to be next manager of Leicester and is reported by several newspapers to be in talks about who would make up his backroo
