‘Together we will win’ – Shakhtar CEO sends out defiant message from Ukraine

‘People are getting killed. There are no words to describe this’ Club trying to help their foreign players to get out of country The CEO of Shakhtar Donetsk, Sergei Palkin, has spoken about the situation in the country, insisting that Ukrainians will “withstand” the Russian invasion and win the war. The Ukrainian Premier League club has been on the move since the Russo-Ukrainian war in 2014, having to play their home games in Lviv, Kharkiv and Kyiv. Palkin, who has been CEO of the successful club since 2004, said at the weekend that the country needed “maximum support” from clubs in Europe and beyond. Romeu screamer puts seal on Southampton’s defeat of Norwich

If a mini mid-winter revival under Dean Smith offered Norwich City faint hope, this defeat saw them revert to type. On this evidence, the remainder of the season promises to be a slog and it would have been a travesty had Southampton only came away with a slender victory. Just as it seemed Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side would have to settle for what would have been tantamount to a one-nil battering, the midfielder Oriol Romeu smacked in a wonderful effort from the edge of the box with a couple of minutes to spare, building on Che Adams’s first-half strike. Southampton, who have lost just once at home all season, are keeping good company in the top half. The home support were able to afford a communal chuckle at the slapstick manner of Adams’s 36th-minute opener but it made painful viewing from a Norwich perspective. Brandon Williams, who struggled at left-back, made a sliding intervention but inadvertently gifted the ball to the swarming Tino Livramento and the teenager sent a low cross into

Tuchel admits Chelsea concerned and distracted by Abramovich ‘uncertainty’

Club’s Russian owner named in parliament on Thursday Manager’s mind ‘clouded’ by war before Carabao Cup final Thomas Tuchel has admitted that he and his players are worried and distracted by the “uncertainty” created by the Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, being named in parliament on Thursday. Tuchel said he was aware that Chelsea could be affected if the UK government targets Abramovich with sanctions after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The manager acknowledged that Chelsea could not ignore that a Labour MP told parliament that Abramovich was identified by the Home Office in 2019 as having links to the Russian state as well as to “corrupt activity and practices”. Everton to silence air-raid siren out of respect for Ukraine internationals

Mykolenko and Zinchenko could play in Manchester City game Siren is usually sounded before kick-off at Goodison Park Everton are expected to silence the air-raid siren that sounds before matches at Goodison Park when Manchester City visit on Saturday out of consideration for the Ukraine internationals Vitalii Mykolenko and Oleksandr Zinchenko. The move comes amid support from several Premier League clubs for players affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. West Ham’s manager David Moyes has given the former Ukraine captain Andriy Yarmolenko time off after the attack on his country, with the winger not in the right frame of mind to play against Wolves on Sunday. Antonio Conte vows to continue telling home truths at Tottenham

Spurs manager says outbursts are a sign that he cares Conte: ‘The truth is the only way that I know to grow’ Antonio Conte has promised to continue delivering home truths at Tottenham, no matter how brutal, as he suggested his explosive outburst after Wednesday’s defeat at Burnley was merely a sign of how much he cares. The manager offered another one on Friday when he admitted the club was in a much worse state than he had imagined when he joined last November. “Maybe in my heart, in my mind and my head I thought to find a situation not better but more ready to fight and to win,” Conte said, as he prepared for Saturday’s Premier League game at Leeds. “Instead I found a situation where we have to work a lot, much more than was my expectation to do. Ralf Rangnick urges Marcus Rashford to draw inspiration from Jadon Sancho

United manager says Sancho also had run of poor form ‘It’s the player himself who has to perform,’ Rangnick says Ralf Rangnick believes Marcus Rashford can draw inspiration from Jadon Sancho as the forward tries to lift himself out of a run of poor form. Rashford started Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg draw at Atlético Madrid but an anonymous display caused him to be replaced on 75 minutes by Anthony Elanga, who scored United’s equaliser. The 24-year-old has only five goals in 22 appearances but Rangnick cited Sancho, who has scored twice and made two assists in his past six games, as an example of another player who struggled previously before enjoying an upturn. Manchester United to Mansfield: Mark Hughes relishing Bradford bow

Hughes has never managed below top-flight level but says he is ‘excited for the challenge’ before his first League Two match There have perhaps never been greater differences surrounding the circumstances surrounding one manager’s last game in his old job, and the first game in his new one. Three years ago, Mark Hughes’s tenure as Southampton manager came to an end with a 2-2 draw against a Manchester United side managed by José Mourinho which featured Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford. This Saturday, it is Mansfield Town and players such as Lucas Akins and Jordan Bowery who stand in Hughes’s way for his match as manager of League Two side Bradford City. The challenges are different too. Back then, Hughes was fighting to keep Southampton in the Premier League and retain his record of having never managed outside the top flight. That record officially disappears when he takes charge of Bradford, who are 15th and 10 points adrift of the play-offs. Continue reading... fr

MLS 2022 predictions: young stars heading to Europe and a Sounders title charge

The new season kicks off this weekend. Our panel of writers deliver their verdicts on the MVP, champions and the young players to watch Douglas Costa. “I’ll bring the flash that LA expects,” the 31-year-old winger declares in a curiously dark and menacing video announcing his transfer to the Galaxy. Carnival has never looked so sinister. Unlike that studio, MLS stadiums should be lit when one of the world’s best dribblers graces the field. Ralph Hasenhüttl finds space to instil change in Southampton’s youngsters | Ben Fisher

Saints manager has made impressive strides with young players in his three-year tenure to keep the club performing despite losing more experienced stars The former Southampton manager Nigel Adkins infamously told reporters that the biggest room in his house was the room for improvement but the incumbent at St Mary’s, Ralph Hasenhüttl, tends to use a different analogy when it comes to analysing progress, with the club looking up and hopeful of a top-half finish for the first time in five years. “Sometimes it is a little bit easier for the young lads because the hard disk is not so full,” Hasenhüttl says. “It is a little bit empty and then you can put things on it easier. The older players need sometimes to put in a little bit more energy to change things because old habits are there. If you want to change them, it takes a lot of energy but they still never stopping trying.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/feb/25/ralph-hasen

Premier League and Carabao Cup final: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Weariness for Leeds and Spurs, sticky times for Lampard and the season’s first major silverware Although it may be coincidence, someone far more observant than this column recently noticed that Southampton appear to have devised a clever, completely legal mid-game tactic that involves one of their players going down “injured” and in apparent need of medical attention between the 60th and 70th minute, at which point their teammates adjourn to the sideline to receive energy gels and tactical instruction from Ralph Hasenhüttl and his backroom team. Should it occur on Friday evening, we can but hope it won’t be the most interesting talking point to arise from their match against Norwich, but it has piqued our curiosity and is the first of our now traditional 10 things to look out for this weekend. Ronaldo falls short against his favourite opponent in city where he won it all | Sid Lowe

Cristiano Ronaldo cut an isolated figure for Manchester United against a team he has hurt countless times in the past There was a moment just before half-time at the Wanda Metropolitano when Cristiano Ronaldo stood on the penalty spot, delivered a shrug of the shoulders, pulled a face and raised a finger: one, just one. None of his Manchester United teammates were really looking his way and even if they had been, there was little they could do about it, and so he walked slowly back out of the area, shaking his head, alone. It was a journey he would embark upon often. All the way to the end, in fact, when he was the first player off, throwing back his arm in frustration, born perhaps not just of this night but other nights too, an uncomfortably familiar feeling of impotence, a hint of recrimination there too. Pausing to applaud the fans in the north stand, Ronaldo crossed the pitch and turned up the tunnel on his own. United had found a way through, Anthony Elanga slipping past Jan Ob

Romelu Lukaku watches from the margins as Chelsea dismantle Lille | Barney Ronay

Pointedly left on the bench by Thomas Tuchel, the Belgian striker has rarely looked more peripheral Stamford Bridge was a crisp, clear, boisterous place at kick-off in this last-16 first leg, the air crackling with a comforting midweek energy under those low white lights. And for the next 90 minutes two things happened. First up there was that unavoidable sense of wider turmoil. Jürgen Klopp warns Liverpool not to ‘get soft’ in their Premier League title pursuit

Leeds visit Anfield on Wednesday for hosts’ game in hand ‘I think we can say we are pushing each other. It keeps you going’ Jürgen Klopp has said the punishing demands of a title race with Manchester City ensure Liverpool can never afford to “get a bit soft” in their pursuit of the Premier League leaders. Klopp’s team can close the gap to three points on Wednesday by winning their game in hand on City against Leeds at Anfield. Liverpool, who recently trailed Pep Guardiola’s team by 12 points, have won their past eight matches and suffered only two defeats in 48 games in all competitions. ‘It’s simple’: Tottenham and Conte feel mood change after win at Man City

Victory over champions followed three league defeats in row Spurs visit Burnley on Wednesday as top-four battle goes on For Antonio Conte, defeat has always felt like a mortal insult, a scar on the soul, and it is not difficult to imagine how low he was after Tottenham’s shambolic home loss to Wolves on the Sunday before last. It came hard on the heels of the defeat against Southampton – also at home, also deserved – and nobody was particularly optimistic about their chances when they went to the Premier League leaders, Manchester City, on Saturday. Cue the Harry Kane-inspired 3-2 win , one of the shock results of the season and, certainly, the statement performance of Conte’s near four-month tenure. Kane scored two, including a 95th-minute winner, and might have had four but he helped to set the tone with his work rate, always “linking with the team defensively”, to borrow Conte’s words. Damien Duff takes bold first step into management at Tolka Park | Barry Glendenning

Roy Keane has turned down a managerial return but an old teammate has put his toe in the water at Shelbourne Towards the end of last week, as a certain high-profile Sky Sports pundit insisted it was “no big deal” that he had not returned to Sunderland to resume a management career that has been on the backburner for over a decade, one of his former international teammates took charge of his first senior game. A big story in his native Ireland, it flew largely under the radar elsewhere. Eight years after he drew the curtain on his career in English football, Damien Duff might have questioned the wisdom of his decision to take on the manager’s role at the League of Ireland side Shelbourne as he strode down the “wrong” side of a touchline he patrolled with such distinction as a player for Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Fulham. In surroundings that could scarcely have been less glamorous, he began his new life as a gaffer on a filthy Friday night in the Dublin suburb of

Premier League title race has finally regained its intrigue as Man City falter | Jonathan Wilson

Jürgen Klopp’s ‘greatest squad’ are closing in on Manchester City with Liverpool now just six points behind them in the table As if from nowhere a title race has appeared. Manchester City’s 12-point lead is down to six which means that if Liverpool win their game in hand and if Liverpool win at the Etihad Stadium in April, the two clubs could be level on points. Leaks and lost leads are haunting Manchester United under Rangnick | Karen Carney

An upturn appeared inevitable when the interim manager came in but little has changed for a fragile and cautious team When Manchester United lost 4-1 at Watford in November, a defeat that cost Ole Gunnar Solskjær his job, things were that bad I thought it could only get better for the club. Since then not much has changed at Old Trafford. The squad available to Ralf Rangnick should be finishing in the top four of the Premier League. They are fourth but could relinquish that position to teams who have games in hand. If they fail to qualify for the Champions League there will be a lot of blame to go round, not just for those in the dugout or on the pitch, but in the boardroom, too. Arteta senses Arsenal have backbone to stand tall in battle for top four

Manager goes into Brentford rematch insisting his side now have the mental toughness they lacked in opening-day defeat Nearly four weeks have passed since Arsenal last played at the Emirates and there will not be many fond memories of that occasion. They toiled against Burnley and, in keeping with current fashion, ended with 10 men. Fine margins like this are supposed to matter when you are fighting for the top four: Sean Dyche’s side had only kept one away clean sheet in the league all season so it was surprising that they held out for a point in relative comfort. Arsenal were sixth then, just as they are now, but the picture is markedly different. The scales have tipped in their favour. A win at Molineux in their only game of the intervening period helped but the shortcomings of those around them have done just as much to define the mood. Since the draw with Burnley, the two teams above them and the pair below have played a total of 10 games and amassed 12 points. Manchester Unit

Jürgen Klopp angrily rejects claim that five substitutes rule favours Liverpool

Manager used extra replacements in win at Internazionale ‘It is absolutely not true that it gives us advantage’ Jürgen Klopp has angrily denied that Liverpool’s defeat of Internazionale showed he would have an advantage with five substitutes in the Premier League, and insisted attitude was key to winning at San Siro. The Liverpool manager’s 59th-minute introduction of Jordan Henderson, Luis Díaz and Naby Keïta helped turn the Champions League last-16 first leg on Wednesday. Roberto Firmino, a half-time replacement for the injured Diogo Jota, opened the scoring and James Milner was also introduced to help protect the eventual 2-0 lead. The demonstration of Liverpool’s strength in depth would not have been possible, Klopp insisted, without the determination of every player to fight against the Italian champions. Heading football and head impacts ‘change blood patterns in brain’

Player study finds ‘specific alterations’ in microRNAs in brain Findings suggest changes may be used to detect brain injury Repeated heading and accidental head impacts in football cause changes to blood patterns in the brain, potentially interfering with signalling pathways, according to a study of players in Norway. The peer-reviewed research , published in the Brain Injury journal, is the latest item in a growing body of evidence pointing to the dangers of heading. It discovered “specific alterations” in levels of microRNAs in the brain upon analysing blood samples from 89 professional players in the country’s top flight. Klopp flexes Liverpool’s strength in depth to devour ageing Inter | Jonathan Liew

The manager utilised his talent-packed bench to snuff out a rampant Inter and the Champions League tie in eight minutes Jürgen Klopp had seen enough. With almost an hour played at San Siro, Internazionale cutting his team to ribbons and the home crowd buoyant, the Liverpool manager retreated to his bench in dim spirits. There were a few seconds of discussion with his coaches. Training tops were peeled off, tactical instructions issued, last-minute warm-ups executed. And then, the flourish: a triple substitution in the 59th minute. Off came Sadio Mané, Fabinho and Harvey Elliott. Diogo Jota had already gone off injured at half‑time. It was Klopp’s inimitable way of telling his players that he wasn’t angry, just disappointed. Firmino and Salah give Liverpool commanding first-leg win over Inter

For 75 minutes the San Siro bounced with a belief and energy befitting Inter’s performance. By the 83rd it was a stadium of silent disbelief, save for the pocket of jubilant Liverpool fans peering down on a classic European away script from up in the gods. They have seen this before, and they know where it can lead. Jürgen Klopp’s team were on the back foot for much of the second half as Ivan Perisic rampaged down the left and Arturo Vidal dominated central midfield. But Liverpool were superior where it mattered most and took a significant step towards the Champions League quarter-finals courtesy of two late strikes in eight minutes from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah. Ruthlessness and experience won out. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/feb/16/internazionale-liverpool-champions-league-last-16-match-report

‘We can do better,’ says Guardiola after Manchester City dismantle Sporting

City manager hails ‘dream result’ but urges team to push on ‘I am absolutely more than delighted,’ says Guardiola Pep Guardiola declared Manchester City’s 5-0 demolition of Sporting the “dream result” but insisted his team can play even better after they emphatically put one foot into the Champions League quarter-finals. Guardiola praised his side’s ruthlessness as they emphatically put one foot into the Champions League quarter-finals – they scored five goals from six shots on target – but he insisted some players had underperformed. The result is City’s joint-biggest away win in the competition, matching their 5-0 victory at Steaua Bucharest in 2016-17. Ruthless Manchester City toy with Sporting to ruin home side’s big night | Jonathan Liew

The Portuguese champions were outclassed in their first Champions League knockout match since 2009 José Alvalade, the man who established Sporting Clube de Portugal in the early 1900s, originally intended to study medicine, only to drop out of his Harvard degree because he couldn’t stand the sight of blood. After spending two years as president of the club, he stormed out in a dispute with his fellow directors, tragically dying of Spanish flu at the age of 33. And perhaps the nicest thing one could say about Sporting’s performance against Manchester City on Tuesday night was that it was a more than fitting tribute to his legacy. Squeamish, rancorous and over far too soon: Sporting’s big night out, their first Champions League knockout game since 2009 , imploded in a bouquet of boos and a haze of basic incoherence. City did not just put the tie to bed: they embalmed it, sealed it in a lead coffin, wreathed it in chains and dropped it somewhere off the north Atlantic coast. Continue r

Manchester United’s Leah Galton: ‘You go that extra mile in the derby’

As she prepares for a crunch game with City, the forward talks about adjusting to Marc Skinner and turning down England The table has turned. When Manchester United step out at the Academy Stadium on Sunday they do so with a five-point advantage over their derby rivals Manchester City. Aided by an injury crisis that has strangled City’s first third of the season, United are nine games away from finishing above the Blues for the first time in their short history. With the gap closing, the relatively new rivalry is intensifying. For the United forward Leah Galton, there is nothing quite like the derby. “It’s probably one of the best feelings,” she says. “It gives the game a bit more hunger and bite, you just want to put that extra challenge in and to go that extra mile because it’s the derby.” The game is sold out, albeit with a reduced capacity still because of Covid, and a record crowd being on the cards reinforces the sense that the derby rivalry is increasing. Arsenal star’s playmaking role looked a good idea on paper, but she was unable to take the game by the scruff of the neck In fairness, they did warn us. Perhaps, on reflection, we should have listened to Jonas Eidevall and Emma Hayes when they urged us not to treat this game as a title decider. It was many things: taut, tense, turbulent, controversial, stressful in the extreme, particularly in the closing minutes when it felt as if the entire game could pivot on a single lucky bounce. In the end, though, nothing was decided and nothing was settled. Chelsea maintained their seven-match unbeaten run, their fate still in their own hands. Arsenal retained their two-point lead at the top of the Women’s Super League, and the knowledge that the hardest games of their season – Chelsea home and away, Manchester United home and away, Manchester City home and away, Tottenham away – are now behind them. Manchester United show few signs of improvement under Ralf Rangnick

United are just as mediocre and unreliable now as they were under Ole Gunnar Solskjær By Josh Wright for WhoScored Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s demise as Manchester United manager was drawn out and, by the end, humiliating. The curtain was not brought down on his time at the club after a 5-0 hammering at home to Liverpool, but an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to bottom-of-the-table Watford a month later. Fast forward 12 weeks and United have again stumbled against a side who are at the foot of the league. Their 1-1 draw at Burnley on Tuesday night, coupled with midweek wins for West Ham and Arsenal, leaves them sixth in the table. Ralf Rangnick was meant to be an upgrade on Solskjær, who was questioned and mocked throughout his time in charge, but the team has not benefited from the same upturn in form they enjoyed when Solskjær took over in 2018. United won 10 of their first 12 league games under Solskjær, while also making it to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Champions League. Rangnic

Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

A mouthwatering match-up on Tyneside, early pressure on Frank Lampard and the issue of crowd conduct There could be no quibbling with Ralf Rangnick’s decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo for Tuesday’s game at Burnley . The 37-year-old provided evidence in the manager’s defence by adding to Manchester United’s catalogue of bungled opportunities after being introduced from the bench. Earlier in the season Ronaldo’s sharpness regularly saved United. Now he has gone five matches without a goal and Rangnick cannot ignore the fact that, when Ronaldo is not scoring, he does not offer much else, unlike Edinson Cavani. With a resurgent Southampton visiting Old Trafford this weekend and United still chronically fragile at the back, Rangnick will need to field forwards who can be relied upon to convert most of their chances if they are to avoid falling further behind in the race for the top four. Harvey Elliott caps return from injury by sealing win for Liverpool over Cardiff

A rapturous reception greeted the double change, laced with excitement and relief. It was a new signing and a new beginning and if the Anfield public were happy simply to see Luis Díaz and Harvey Elliott on the pitch, they had further reasons to celebrate Jürgen Klopp’s substitutions. The January buy made an encouraging debut, the teenager made the ideal comeback and a day that threatened to be awkward for Liverpool started to assume a near-perfect look. For Díaz, an assist 11 minutes into his Anfield career was perhaps all the more auspicious given Klopp’s indelible association with pressing. He harried a dozing Perry Ng out of possession to tee up Takumi Minamino for Liverpool’s second goal. For Elliott, their third was his first for the club and while it was taken beautifully – the winger taking a touch to control Andy Robertson’s cross and swivelling to dispatch a half-volley – perhaps his presence on the pitch was a greater achievement. It was 147 days since he dislocated his ank

The former England and Manchester United striker, 36, opened up about two-day “self-binges” in the early days of his career as he struggled with the exposure that accompanied becoming England’s record goalscorer after growing up on a Liverpool council estate. Afghanistan women’s football team reunite with hopes of competing in Australia | Joey Lynch

For the first time since fleeing their home and finding sanctuary in Australia, the team are taking their battle for equality onto the field Early on a suitably idyllic Melbourne morning, 18 Afghan footballers and one referee took to the field at the Darebin International Sports Centre. The group were training under the banner of their nation’s women’s team for the first time since being forced to flee their homeland last August. It was an innocuous session, featuring the warm-ups, drills and team talks replicated at grounds around the world. But there was a palpable sense of joy on display. Though a few have played games here and there since they were granted asylum, Saturday’s session was the first time the team – which was “ built to fight ” the Taliban’s ideology – had joined together since they sat on the floor of a crowded plane as it took off from Hamid Karzai airport, fleeing Kabul alongside more than 75 other players, relatives and team officials. Middlesbrough knock Manchester United out of FA Cup on penalties

On a night when Old Trafford’s concourse caterers went down, Manchester United made an undeniable hash of what had appeared an easy cruise to victory over Middlesbrough. They were knocked out 8-7 on penalties and so unless Ralf Rangnick’s half-cocked side somehow win the Champions League, United’s trophy drought will stretch to six years, at least. If the unfortunate Anthony Elanga missed the vital spot-kick in front of the Stretford End – the 19-year-old was devastated – this, really, was a defeat born from United seriously losing the plot in the second half. Antonio Conte delivers scathing review of Tottenham’s transfer mistakes

Manager queries several outcast players going out on loan ‘If you send away players … maybe you did something wrong’ Antonio Conte says Tottenham are still a long way from where he wants them to be as he delivered a scathing assessment of the club’s transfer market mistakes. The manager thinks small steps towards clearing up the mess were made in January with the signings of Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus; players to make the squad more complete, to add depth in areas where it was needed. He said that Kulusevski could play at right wing-back, an area he was extremely keen to strengthen, as well as in attacking midfield. Bentancur will compete in central midfield. West Ham manager David Moyes adamant Declan Rice will not be sold

Moyes insists it will take ‘humungous money’ to get midfielder ‘He’s like a special edition, for me the best midfielder in Europe’ David Moyes has warned Declan Rice’s suitors it will take “humungous money” to convince West Ham to sell the midfielder this summer. Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are planning moves for Rice and there is a feeling that the 23-year-old could look to leave after West Ham made no signings during the January transfer window. The England international is determined to play in the Champions League and, although the London Stadium club remain in the hunt for a top-four place, there are concerns that last month’s inactivity could cause their season to fizzle out. Chelsea’s FA Cup tie against Plymouth not about youngsters, says Tuchel

Premier League side expected to field strong starting lineup Tuchel determined to seal progress against League One side Thomas Tuchel has said he does not see Chelsea’s FA Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle as a chance to give experience to the club’s young prospects. Chelsea saw several talented academy players leave the club in search of regular football last summer and there is a desire to ensure that future generations do not head down the same path. Teddy Sharman-Lowe, Xavier Simons, Lewis Hall, Charlie Webster and Harvey Vale trained with the senior squad this week and there are hopes Tuchel will continue to make use of the academy. However, Chelsea’s manager will pick a strong team when the European champions look to reach the fifth round when they host League One opposition on Saturday evening, even though he agreed it was important for youngsters to see a route into the first team. Jürgen Klopp says Luis Díaz signing fits in with Liverpool’s long-term vision

‘We constantly prepare for today and for tomorrow as well’ Colombia winger could make debut in FA Cup tie with Cardiff Jürgen Klopp has described Luis Díaz’s transfer as evidence of Liverpool preparing for the future and for “pretty much all scenarios” with regard to their current forward line. Liverpool beat Tottenham to the signing of the exciting Colombia international in a deal that could rise to €60m, making Díaz the fourth most expensive recruit in the club’s history. Klopp expects the 25-year-old to have an immediate impact at Anfield and may hand the winger a debut against Cardiff in the FA Cup on Sunday. But the Liverpool manager also believes the club have protected themselves in the long-term with the deal for Díaz, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino all in the final 17 months of their contracts. FA Cup fourth round: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Frank Lampard begins his Everton tenure, ghosts of upsets past for West Ham and a ‘free hit’ for Cambridge A hugely difficult week for Manchester United ends with them facing one of the form teams in the Championship. Chris Wilder, the Boro manager, has banned his players from swapping shirts with Cristiano Ronaldo, remarking they are not on a “sight-seeing tour”. His last visit to Old Trafford came with Sheffield United, their 2-1 win a rare highlight in a doomed final season, and Wilder has always had a taste for tweaking the nose of the gilded elite. Talking of which, Paul Pogba is fit enough for selection by Ralf Rangnick. Can Rangnick find Pogba a settled role in the team where José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær failed? Or, with the Frenchman’s contract ticking down towards a free transfer, will the interim manager even try? “He might even be in the starting XI,” Rangnick said on Thursday, though Pogba would not seem an ideal fit for Rangnick’s prescribed style.
