Data has improved our understanding of football but it remains a sport of luck | Jason Stockwood

Analytics are incredibly useful but at Grimsby we have learned they tell only half the story of a club’s on-pitch fortunes I accidentally stumbled into the world of entrepreneurship and the internet in the late 1990s. We created businesses that relied on data and upended a marketing orthodoxy made famous by John Wanamaker when he said: “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.” In that new digital realm we measured our marketing spend in real time, to the penny, and were able to calculate the return on that spend immediately. This precision mentality, coupled with genuinely meritocratic cultures, created workplaces that have changed the business landscape beyond recognition. The culture pioneered at places such as lastminute.com and match.com are now commonplace but 20 years ago were unique. When we came to football ownership 18 months ago I was interested to understand how a similar focus on the relative importance of culture and dat

Greg Taylor scores screamer as Celtic sink Livingston to go four points clear

Greg Taylor celebrated his 100th game for Celtic with a stunning goal in a comprehensive 3-0 win over Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena. The 24-year-old Hoops defender set up Japan striker Kyogo Furuhashi to fire in his ninth goal of the season in the 10th minute of a game that the visitors dominated. Taylor, signed from Kilmarnock in 2019, had an effort saved by debutant keeper Jack Hamilton just after the break but found the net in the 53rd minute with a thunderous drive from 25 yards. Graham Potter has 'nothing to say sorry for' after Chelsea’s defeat to Brighton – video

Graham Potter insisted he has 'nothing to apologise for' after Brighton fans booed the Chelsea manager on his return to the Amex Stadium. Potter admitted he ended up looking 'a bit of a fool' after his return to Brighton ended in a 4-1 defeat for Chelsea and said his decision to use Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic as wing-backs had backfired. Brighton raced into a commanding half-time lead, with own goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah compounding Potter's misery following Leandro Trossard's early opener. ‘I don’t want any part of it’: the Wales fans shunning Qatar’s World Cup

Ethical, logistical and financial concerns see supporters staying away, despite it being their team’s first World Cup since 1958 Imagine being a Wales fan and not going to the World Cup. It is the first time they have qualified since 1958, which was so long ago that the goal that knocked them out was scored by an unknown teenager called Pelé. Sixty-four years later and it is Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Rob Page looking to set the world on fire. What a time to be alive! Except, for some Wales fans, they are going to pass, thanks very much. Some of the same supporters who found themselves in tears of ecstasy in Zenica, on their way to Euro 2016 despite defeat by Bosnia-Herzegovina, or who phoned home to delay their return one more time as Chris Coleman’s team became the sensation of the finals in France, are choosing to sit this one out. If anyone has reckoned with the complicated issues surrounding this much-maligned tournament, it is them. Continue reading... from Football | The

Sophia Smith sparkles as Portland Thorns capture record third NWSL title

Portland win 2-0 over upstarts Kansas City in NWSL final Sophia Smith scores early and earns player of match honors Thorns add record third title to previous 2013 and 2017 wins The Portland Thorns are National Women’s Soccer League champions for a record third time after winning 2-0 over the Kansas City Current before a near-sellout crowd at Audi Field in the nation’s capital on Saturday night. The brace of goals came from burgeoning US star Sophia Smith and an own goal early in both halves. And while the threats from the west coach giants were varied and relentless – overshadowing any from middle-America surprise package Kansas City – the start, middle and end of the momentous match were marked in particular by Smith. It was a fitting end to a season notable for just the same. The 22-year-old newly minted NWSL Most Valuable Player – the youngest in the 10-year-old league’s history – made her mark early with a fourth-minute goal on a match that would prove notable for her perform

The surprising history of successful caretaker managers in football

Aaron Danks, Gary O’Neil and Steve Davis have stepped up well. Mário Zagallo and Roberto di Matteo would be proud By Richard Foster for The Football Mine Not many people beyond the staff at Aston Villa would have heard of Aaron Danks before he took over from Steven Gerrard last week. Following a dismal 3-0 defeat to Fulham, Danks was put in charge and had just two days to prepare for a meeting with another west London side. Villa’s 4-0 victory over Brentford was one of the most striking examples of a new-manager bounce in recent times. Danks could barely contain his delight in his post-match press conference. “It’s been a really exciting experience,” he said. “I’m absolutely shattered and exhausted now because it’s been three really tough days.” His managerial reign was over the following day as Unai Emery was appointed as permanent manager at Villa Park . Danks can walk away with his head held high, with an impressive albeit brief record. Continue reading... from Football | Th

Coventry City’s present and future are haunted by ‘curse’ of the CBS Arena | Paul MacInnes

The ground’s current leaseholders, Wasps, have entered administration in the latest crisis to hit the stadium On Thursday afternoon Coventry City told their supporters that they would fulfil Saturday’s Championship fixture against Blackpool and that the venue would be the Coventry Building Society Arena. Confirming a home fixture 48 hours before kick-off is not the sort of thing a football club usually has to do, especially not one that has experienced a remarkable rebirth these past half-dozen years. But when you are a tenant at England’s most cursed stadium, you should never take anything for granted. Legal action, rent strikes, extended exile and, this autumn, the collapse of one of the country’s leading rugby clubs: the CBS (formerly Ricoh) Arena has seen it all. Little of it has been pretty. The question people in the city are now asking is: does the future hold the prospect of anything better? Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/footb

Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Graham Potter returns to Brighton, crunch time again for a Leeds manager at Anfield and Forest eyeing another shock Brendan Rodgers revived? Five matches in October have brought three wins, just one defeat, and four clean sheets. Picking off fellow strugglers Leeds and then Wolves in a resounding 4-0 win lifted Leicester out of the bottom three but there is plenty of work to be done. Rodgers’ immediate target is to reach the World Cup break clear of the relegation zone, though facing Manchester City is likely to be unhelpful. Leicester’s newfound defensive strength has been widely attributed to the form of Wout Faes but the aggressive, tousle-haired Belgian might be saved the ultimate test against Erling Haaland given that he’s a doubt with the foot injury that prevented him playing the second half at Borussia Dortmund . Leicester have occasionally been a troubling opponent for Pep Guardiola. His first visit to the King Power in October 2016 ended in a Jamie Vardy-inspired 4-2 loss

Giovanni Simeone fires in early double as Napoli swat aside dismal Rangers

Rangers’ sobering Champions League campaign continued on its downward trajectory with a 3-0 defeat against Napoli in the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. A 7-1 defeat by Liverpool at Ibrox in their last Group A outing had shocked the Light Blues and their fans and it looked ominous when striker Giovanni Simeone scored twice in the first 16 minutes for the dominant home side. The second half was more encouraging for the visitors but the defender Leo Østigård headed in a third from a corner in the 80th minute to seal the win and leave the Serie A leaders with five wins out of five in the group. By contrast, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have lost all five games, conceding 19 goals and scoring one, and he will now find himself under more pressure. Next Generation 2022: Why scouts select players based on ‘the relative age effect’

If you want a child to make this list, you better make sure he is born as soon as possible after 1 September Last month the Guardian released Next Generation 2022 : 20 of the best talents at Premier League clubs. As with previous years it selected “the best youngsters at each club”, this time among those born between 1 September 2005 and 31 August 2006, an age band known as “first-year scholars”. As in earlier seasons it makes for interesting reading. But the brain works in mysterious ways, and I did something different this year: I looked at the month of birth of these players. Thirteen were born in the first semester of the selection year (1 September 2005 to 28 February 2006) and seven in the second semester (1 March 2006 to 31 August 2006). Almost twice as many were from the first half. Championship roundup: Cardiff make it easy for Swansea, Watford near play-offs

Cardiff’s Callum Robinson’s red card helps Swansea in 2-0 win Watford three points from a play-off place after 4-0 Luton rout Russell Martin felt that the Cardiff forward Callum Robinson was guilty of making an “easy mistake” for the seventh-minute red card that allowed Swansea to continue their dominance of the South Wales derby. Ollie Cooper and Michael Obafemi were on target as Swansea ran out comfortable 2-0 winners to secure a sixth win in eight derby meetings. Cardiff have won just once in that time and their fate on Sunday was sealed when Robinson reacted to Ben Cabango’s early nudge by throwing the ball in to the face of the Wales defender. Ruben Loftus-Cheek shines for Chelsea to give timely reminder to Southgate | Jonathan Wilson

Nearly four years on from his last England appearance, the 26-year-old showed why he could yet make the World Cup squad A quick quiz question: can you name each of the six players who played in midfield for England at the 2018 World Cup? Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard, with their goals, perhaps spring most immediately to mind. Then there was the penalty that Eric Dier converted in the shootout against Colombia and the one that Jordan Henderson did not. That’s the easy(ish) four, but a special bonus prize to anybody who recalled Fabian Delph’s two starts against Belgium or the fact that when Alli was injured against Tunisia he was replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who retained his place for the group games against Panama and Belgium and then started the third-place play-off as well. It has been Loftus-Cheek’s fate to exist on the periphery of English football’s consciousness. Benito Carbone: ‘I never wanted to leave Wednesday. It was my mistake’

Arriving in Sheffield set the gifted Italian, now 51, on a path via Aston Villa and Bradford to being a huge cult hero in the game Walking into a small cafe in Bermondsey, south London, Benito Carbone looks like the sort of man who has never made a mistake in his life. Only a certain type of person can pull off the pinstripe that adorns his tailored suit. But any illusions of pomp and grandeur are quickly swept aside: from the first handshake Carbone is disarming, warm – insisting that I call him “Benny” – and happy to admit that when it comes to mistakes, he has made a few. Perhaps that is not surprising for a player who had 18 clubs across a career that spanned four decades, including spells at Torino, Napoli, Internazionale, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Derby County, Middlesbrough, Bradford, Parma and even Sydney FC. Remarkably, Wednesday are the only club he played at for more than two seasons and it is where he is most fondly remembered in England. And yet Carbone concedes

Mitrovic strikes as Fulham beat 10-man Aston Villa in Gerrard’s final match

It was a night of indignities by the Thames. There was Douglas Luiz making it easy for Marco Silva’s rampant Fulham by letting the side down with a brainless red card. There was rotten defending, a hapless own goal from Tyrone Mings and no shortage of dissent from Aston Villa’s travelling supporters, who were not shy in making it clear that they wanted the board to put them out of their misery and give Steven Gerrard his marching orders . Of course, the romantic take would be to dwell on how Gerrard always fought until the bitter end when he was rampaging around midfield for Liverpool. But management is a lonelier, harsher job. It is hard not to pity Gerrard. He came into the press room after yet another sorry effort from Villa, who were fortunate it only ended 3-0, and insisted he was not a quitter. The club made him talk and then, before the evening was done, they released a 41-word statement announcing that Gerrard had gone after less than a year in the job. Continue reading...

Reece James’s knee injury has given Graham Potter a conundrum to solve before his team host Manchester United on Saturday. There is no ready-made alternative to the England international. The experiment of using Raheem Sterling as James’s stand-in was swiftly aborted during Chelsea’s win over Villa last weekend and César Azpilicueta does not have the legs to charge up and down the right flank against top opposition. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a likelier candidate. The midfielder did well as a wing-back for Thomas Tuchel and has filled in there for Potter. However Loftus-Cheek is not a defender – he had some uncomfortable moments against Brentford in midweek – and his delivery is not as incisive as James. United should look to target that flank. Ten Hag focused on ‘magnificent’ team display and not Ronaldo walk-off – video

A delighted Erik ten Hag praised Manchester United’s  'best team performance' of the season after a 2-0 defeat of Tottenham, but the manager again had to deal with a distraction as  Cristiano Ronaldo walked down the Old Trafford tunnel before the end of the match without his permission. Ronaldo had been dropped for Marcus Rashford and, after Scott McTominay, Anthony Elanga and Christian Eriksen were introduced as second-half substitutes, the Portuguese headed for the United dressing room, as he had done before the end of July’s friendly against Rayo Vallecano.  Erik ten Hag focused on ‘magnificent’ team display and not Ronaldo walk-off Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/video/2022/oct/20/ten-hag-focused-on-magnificent-team-display-and-not-ronaldo-walk-off-video

Manchester City catching United in Asia thanks to Erling Haaland effect

Manchester United’s popularity across the continent was once unassailable but fans are latching on to the striker’s exploits Manchester City may have won five English Premier League titles since Manchester United’s last triumph in 2013 but the Old Trafford club are still ahead in Asia. Compared to the famous red shirts, sightings of a City top have been relatively rare in the streets of Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai over the years. It’s starting to change though and in the world’s biggest continent the gap has been closing and now, thanks to Erling Haaland, it is closing quicker than ever. There are a lot of doubtful numbers put forward by European clubs about their followings out east . In 2015, Chelsea claimed a quarter of a billion Asian fans, three years after United had settled on 325m in the Asia-Pacific region. Yet United have had, along with Liverpool, a base of solid support in Southeast Asian heartlands of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand due to English football being

Dean Henderson keeps out Brighton to lift Nottingham Forest off the bottom

This was a frustrating, sapping 95 minutes of football and Steve Cooper did not overly care. For long periods Nottingham Forest played like the disjointed, slung-together set of players they inescapably are but it did not cost them. On the contrary they looked more comfortable as the game progressed against an increasingly exasperated Brighton and fought admirably to earn a point that takes them off the bottom of the table. The robustness of their defending rendered the fact they barely mounted an attack of note irrelevant. If Forest rode their luck for spells of the first half they spent long stretches of the second untroubled, running the clock down expertly and playing on the audible nerves of a home crowd that has seen this all before. Erik ten Hag focused on ‘magnificent’ team display and not Ronaldo walk-off

Manchester United manager: ‘We deal with that tomorrow’ Antonio Conte says Tottenham ‘did not start the game’ A delighted Erik ten Hag praised Manchester United’s “best team performance” of the season after a 2-0 defeat of Tottenham, but the manager again had to deal with the distraction of Cristiano Ronaldo walking down the Old Trafford tunnel before the end of the match without the manager’s permission. Goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes secured United’s sixth win of the campaign. After home wins over Liverpool and Arsenal, three top-six sides have now been beaten at Old Trafford. Ten Hag said: “I am pleased with the team – it was the best performance so far this season so you see a team developing, you already see the last weeks [how] we want to play. We get every day better on the pitch. Not every game will be like today but Spurs is a magnificent team and it was really enjoyable to watch.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/footba

Shaw claims Manchester United team has not always been picked on merit

Left-back says Ten Hag will not use players who are out of form ‘In the past that’s not been the case,’ England defender claims Luke Shaw has claimed the Manchester United team was not always picked on merit under Erik ten Hag’s predecessors and that the new manager’s approach keeps “everyone on their toes”. The England left-back lost his place to Tyrell Malacia after United’s 4-0 drubbing at Brentford in August but has returned to the starting lineup for the past two Premier League games against Newcastle and Everton. Shaw admits he has no issue with being dropped over a loss of form but believes that fair standard of selection has not always been applied. Gary O’Neil is making a strong case to be given the Bournemouth job

Since O’Neil took charge in August, Bournemouth are the only unbeaten team in the Premier League By Ben McAleer for WhoScored Had the Premier League season started on 30 August, when Gary O’Neil was appointed Bournemouth manager on a caretaker basis following Scott Parker’s dismissal , the club would be fifth in the table, just five points behind Arsenal. Bournemouth have picked up 10 points from six games under O’Neil. They have drawn four of those games but, since he took over, they are the only unbeaten team in the Premier League. Managing a side that had been expected to drop straight back into the Championship (they may well have done had Parker remained at the helm), O’Neil deserves a lot of praise. After their 9-0 defeat by Liverpool , Parker said he “felt sorry for the players and felt sorry for the fans” as the team was “under-equipped at this level”. Can Arsenal sustain their title push or will fatigue and injuries take toll? | Nick Ames

Mikel Arteta’s side have made their best start to a season in 118 years and have a four-point lead at the top. How far can they go? It augurs well when the breaks start going your way. Aaron Ramsdale knew it, judging by his fist-pumping reaction to Patrick Bamford’s penalty miss at Elland Road; Mikel Arteta almost certainly did, if his visible ecstasy at seeing Leeds correctly denied another go in injury time is any measure. For the second time in 72 hours Arsenal rode their luck in navigating a tricky away assignment and with each banana skin avoided the sense grows that they are on to something special. Nine wins from 10 top-flight games bear out that impression. It is Arsenal’s best start to a Premier League season, a point ahead of the Invincibles’ 2003 tally, and their strongest overall in 118 seasons of trying. Even the most jaded among their cohort can allow themselves a glint in the eye. Arteta is asked every week to set a hare running and announce his team are in a title ra

The last thing Steven Gerrard needed was to encounter a goalkeeper who chose this occasion to produce the best performance of his Premier League career. Kepa Arrizabalaga has not had too many afternoons such as this over the past four years but he denied Aston Villa with an outstanding exhibition of his art. Two first-half saves from Jacob Ramsey and Danny Ings took the breath away. Kylian Mbappé’s tantrums and feuds a fresh twist in tiresome PSG pantomime | Jonathan Wilson

Absurdly wealthy owners with scant regard for the game placating absurdly remunerated players – is this really football? Was there a moment, back in August, when Christophe Galtier wondered what the fuss had been? Did he watch his Paris Saint-Germain team smacking in 21 goals in their first four games of the season and think how easy this all was? Take what is probably the starriest forward line in the history of the game, let them play and watch the brilliant goals stack up. Lionel Messi, after a disappointing first season in Paris, was re-energised. Neymar, playing alongside his mate, was thriving. And Kylian Mbappé … Well, what was Mbappé? He was still impossibly quick. He scored four goals in those first four games of the season, but the signs of discontent were already there. Of course they were, for this is PSG, where discontent is ever-present, a club described by a recent former manager as “a nest of vipers”. Mbappé may have just, thanks in part to the intervention of the pre

Luis Figo: ‘I had everything at Barcelona – moving to Real Madrid took its toll’

On the eve of the first clásico of the season the Portugal legend recalls the 2000 transfer that changed the face of football ‘I was a guinea pig,” says football’s first galáctico , the hint of a smile creeping across his face. At his peak Luis Figo was the world’s best player, its most expensive too. Across 20 years, he played more than 900 games, earned 127 caps, scored more than 150 goals and won eight league titles, a European Cup and the Ballon d’Or. He also took his country to their first final , carrying Portugal into a new era. In fact, he carried the entire game into a new era. There’s a case that the super-club age, modern football, starts with Figo: a pioneer, a guinea pig. Cobaya is his word and his was the transfer that changed everything, his 10bn peseta (€60m) move from Barcelona to Madrid in 2000 like something from a thriller, constantly shifting, so astonishing, so dramatic and just so big that it sometimes seems to eclipse everything else. “I’d like more value gi

Manchester United went close to rueing a failure to claim three points before Scott McTominay’s stoppage-time strike retained their hope of winning Group E and avoiding a knockout tie against a Champions League-eliminated opponent. That might be one of Barcelona, Milan, Juventus or Atlético Madrid, none of whom Erik ten Hag’s fledgling team would relish facing. Bukayo Saka chests fortunate Arsenal to victory over Bodø/Glimt

Arsenal skated on thin ice but survived their expedition to Norway’s far north. They did not exactly produce a spectacle in the land of aurora borealis and, in truth, Bodø/Glimt should have made them pay for a passive second half. Their creative radar was off for the majority of a chilly night but Bukayo Saka’s fortunate first-half goal proved sufficient to end one of the most eyecatching records on the continent. A slick, smart home side had won their last 14 European games here and it was no small achievement for the run to finally be punctured. The hosts burnished their reputation as one of the most progressive clubs, pound for pound, in this competition and it was easy to see why the likes of Celtic, Dinamo Zagreb and, on two occasions, Roma have been humbled here in the last year. Had Runar Espejord, their centre-forward, not skied a glorious chance from eight yards just before the hour they would have scented a further scalp. That was not their only opportunity during a wave of

Liverpool have lost balance and confidence. Regaining both is not easy | Jonathan Wilson

Jürgen Klopp’s malfunctioning side were exposed by Arsenal’s pace and youth to continue a surprising poor start to the season It’s never just one thing. Football, whatever the cliche may say, is not a simple game. A team is a hugely complex organism: a malfunction in one area can have profound consequences elsewhere. Everything is connected and contingent; nothing is independent. Jürgen Klopp must feel at the moment as though he is engaged in a game of Whac-A-Mole, bashing at problems here and there, and yet also knowing that these moles are related, that a mole in one corner is breeding moles elsewhere. But let’s begin with the most obvious issue, the great culture war of our time: the Trent Alexander-Arnold Conundrum. Already, it’s one of those issues that has become almost impossible to discuss properly, arguments yielding to meta-arguments as everybody rushes to deeply entrenched positions. Alexander-Arnold is a generational genius and Gareth Southgate should be sent to the Tower

Eze missed the majority of last season as he recovered from the ruptured achilles tendon sustained in May 2021 but has shown signs of being back to the form that almost earned him an England call-up for Euro 2020. Reece James steals spotlight to show why he is England’s right-hand man | Barney Ronay
