Clive Tyldesley calls for commentators to receive training on racial stereotyping

Study find ‘bias’ in how darker-skinned players are described Tyldesley has written to the PFA regarding ‘co-commentators’ Clive Tyldesley has written to the Professional Footballers’ Association suggesting co-commentators are given proper training after a study found “evident bias” in how darker-skinned players are described in broadcasts. The study, conducted by Danish firm RunRepeat in association with the PFA, found that 62.6 percent of praise regarding a player’s intelligence was aimed at those with lighter skin, while 63.33 percent of criticism for a player’s intelligence was aimed at those with darker skin. The findings also show that 60.4 percent of praise for work rate was directed at lighter-skinned players. Newcastle takeover saga close to resolution, Richard Masters tells MPs

Premier League CEO under scrutiny over Saudi takeover bid Deal being approved ‘would be humiliating’, SNP MP says The Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters, has hinted that the Newcastle takeover saga could be concluded shortly, but he was warned by MPs that it would be “humiliating” to allow a Saudi Arabian consortium to take over a club given the country’s record on piracy and human rights. Masters, appearing in front of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee, was repeatedly asked how the league could approve the deal when the World Trade Organisation had ruled that the Saudi state had facilitated the beoutQ pirate broadcasting that illegally showed games – and also blocked the Premier League taking legal action to stop it. Saudi takeover of Newcastle would be 'humiliating', says MP – video

The Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters, has hinted that the Newcastle takeover saga could be concluded shortly, but he was warned by MPs that it would be ‘humiliating’ to allow a Saudi Arabian consortium to take over a club given the country’s record on piracy and human rights. The SNP’s John Nicolson also pointed out that the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test would be considered bizarre if it gave approval to Prince Mohammed bin Salman, given that it failed to allow One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson to take over Doncaster Rovers Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/video/2020/jun/30/saudi-takeover-of-newcastle-united-would-be-humiliating-john-nicolson-premier-league-richard-masters-video

Zico: 'I would not swap watching the Premier League for any other'

The Brazil legend reminisces about scoring against England, beating Liverpool and his days playing in Italy and Japan By Bruno Freitas for Yellow & Green Football Zico has spent the last few months among his dogs and eight grandchildren in his beautiful house in Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. He is not used to being at home for so long. After spending the bulk of his playing career with Flamengo, he set off on a football adventure that has taken him across the globe and back. After playing in Italy and Japan, he managed in Japan, Brazil, Turkey, Russia, Greece, Iraq, Qatar and India, before taking up his current role as technical director at Kashima Antlers in the J-League. Being at home, then, is unusual for the 67-year-old. “This is the first time I have spent more than three months at home, enjoying my house. It’s been good,” he says. English football won't really be back until women are playing again too | Julie Elliott

With the WSL not restarting until September, women’s football is not on equal ground, writes MP Julie Elliott As the Premier League season gets back into its rhythm following the immense energy and investment put into Project Restart, it is easy to look at the cancellation of the Women’s Super League with disdain, especially in light of women’s football restarting elsewhere. After the World Cup in France last year provided a catalyst for a record-breaking WSL season, we saw attendances and viewers up, technology such as the FA player taking the game to new audiences, and players becoming household names across the country. It was therefore disappointing to see the fanfare and effort put into getting the men’s game back in comparison with the women, who saw cancellation for the top two tiers, and a nulling and voiding for those below , not least for Sunderland AFC Ladies who were about to be promoted to the Championship having been runaway leaders of the National League North all sea

Football is back and we are grateful but a crowd is not a sound effect | Jonathan Liew

We may be adapting to watching games without any crowd present but it is inauthentic: let’s not start getting too used to it Nothing really prepares you for watching a Premier League game without a crowd for the first time. I was at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night to watch Chelsea v Manchester City and – after completing my temperature check, filling out my health questionnaire and negotiating the dozen or so security checkpoints – what I encountered was something bare and brutal: football stripped to its bones, condensed to its basic raw materials. Perhaps the most startling thing was not how inauthentic it felt, but how real. You realise how small a stadium really is, how much flesh and longing we pack into these four walls. You realise, too, how much it means to those involved. The normal frames of reference – school football, youth football, training games, Sunday League – do not really apply here. Perhaps this is as much projection as reality, but you feel the freight of the

Relief all round as Bayern's muted party brings Bundesliga curtain down | Andy Brassell

Bayern Munich celebrated in front of empty stands at Wolfsburg, but completing the season safely is the biggest victory of all There were no torrents of beer being thrown, no families invited onto the pitch and of course, no full stands. As Bayern Munich were presented with the Bundesliga trophy for the eighth time in a row on Saturday, it wasn’t even at their home but at vanquished Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena. Bayern’s players made their own amusement, with Lucas Hernandez dummying his lift of the trophy to widespread laughter and Leon Goretzka’s teammates ambushing him and rolling up his sleeves, exposing his recently augmented biceps. Bayern’s pleasure was real and their collective restraint reflected the fact that their season is not nearly over, with next Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final against Bayer Leverkusen and then the Champions League still to come as they take aim at the treble. Still, it was indicative of the sense of relief that “the only kind of Bundesliga possible for now

'This most ghastly season': when hope turned to loss for one family of fans

This season started with such expectation. For some families, it ends with lives lost, seats empty and rituals forever changed By When Saturday Comes , part of the Guardian Sport Network April 18 was supposed to be Swindon Town’s last home game, when the team were crowned League Two champions after a magnificent season. It was also supposed to be a day we paused to remember, as just before the kick-off the names of those supporters who’ve passed away during the year are read out. Each year is different, and each year is the same. It might be a meaningless mid-table meander, or maybe more significant; either way, within 10 minutes I’m moaning about a throw-in here, or applauding a deft pass there. I’ve moved on from thanking my lucky stars that while I may know some of those names, none of them carry my surname. Lazio rely on luck and Luis Alberto's sorcery to keep title hopes alive | Nicky Bandini

The Spanish playmaker got the winner against Fiorentina, but Lazio needed a fortunate bounce and a questionable penalty call to keep Juventus in their sights “It’s alive!” The front page of Sunday’s Corriere dello Sport shrieked out like Doctor Frankenstein at the awakening of his Creature . As late as 10pm the previous evening, it had seemed that one of the most compelling Serie A title races in years was coming to a premature end. And then, with a jolt, it wasn’t. The newspaper gave credit to a Spanish sorcerer. Luis Alberto – Il Mago , as they know him in Rome – had scored the winning goal as Lazio came from behind to beat Fiorentina, dragging his team back to within four points of the league leaders, Juventus. How much longer will Harry Kane tolerate a career without trophies?

The often-ridiculed phrase “This Means More” was coined by Liverpool long before it applied to an inevitable increase in local Covid-19 cases caused by socially irresponsible public celebrations. The unbridled delight of fans who have seen their team win the Champions League, Premier League and Club World Cup in little over a year is unlikely to have been lost on a player who, for all the individual plaudits he has earned, remains resolutely a footballing bridesmaid rather than bride in terms of major honours won. Pep Guardiola sets Manchester City's sights on two trophies

Manager already looking forward to Champions League City face Arsenal in FA Cup semi-final after win over Newcastle Pep Guardiola says retaining the FA Cup would be the perfect preparation for Manchester City’s Champions League reunion with Real Madrid. City will face Real in their last-16 second leg during the end-of-season mini-tournament on 7 August and, having lost their Premier League title to Liverpool last Thursday, they are determined to hold on to the FA Cup. They took a significant step towards doing so on Sunday when they booked a Cup semi-final date against Arsenal by beating Newcastle 2-0 at St James’ Park, and Guardiola is keen for his side to finish the season on a high. The tie with Arsenal will be on 18 or 19 July and the FA Cup final is scheduled for 1 August. Manchester City dominate Newcastle to earn FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal

As Pep Guardiola looked forward to catching up with his old friend Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side in the semi-finals, Newcastle United renewed their unwanted acquaintance with an all too familiar foe. Cup failure has become such a part of the club’s modern history that they last won a trophy – the Fairs Cup – in 1969. Steve Bruce had hoped to change that narrative after guiding Newcastle to their first quarter-final in 15 years but, propelled by a Kevin De Bruyne penalty and a gorgeous Raheem Sterling goal, Guardiola’s largely excellent City ensured the wait goes on. The Kanté paradox: will world's best spoiler fit in at new-look Chelsea? | Jonathan Liew

Frank Lampard is building a free-flowing attacking style and the World Cup winner does not surprise in possession The trouble with N’Golo Kanté, you see, is that he’s too good at winning the ball. Other players tackle, block, deflect, get their foot in. Kanté actually goes and takes the ball for himself. The two or three seconds when Kanté spots a ball he can win, chases it down and then simply prises it away, like the skin from a roasted garlic clove, are some of the most thrilling seconds on offer in the sport. At which point you have a slight problem in that – having won the ball – Kanté now has to do something with it. Danny Ings' double for Southampton leaves Watford in deep trouble

It was not hard to spot the team fighting against relegation. While Southampton cruised to another straightforward victory on the road thanks to a finishing masterclass from Danny Ings, Watford were choked by fear and wasted another opportunity to haul themselves away from the bottom three. Southampton were good value for their second consecutive away win, secured thanks to a typically sharp double from Ings and a trademark free-kick from James Ward-Prowse. The anxiety weighed heavily on Watford, who remain a point above Bournemouth in 18th place, and defeat was not a good look given that Nigel Pearson had to drop three players following an alleged lockdown breach involving Nathaniel Chalobah and Domingos Quina reportedly attending a party hosted by Andre Gray. Liverpool's new Bootroom: from Peter 'The Eye' Krawietz to Mona Nemmer | Andy Hunter

It would be another three years before the wrecking ball demolished rich tradition for the sake of a bigger press room. Repeated conquests of English and European football were plotted in that confined space where Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, Reuben Bennett and Tom Saunders, as well as Moran and later Evans, sat on baskets surrounded by rows of boots and posters of topless pin-ups. Kia Joorabchian's growing influence sheds light on Arsenal's identity crisis | Nick Ames

The super-agent’s involvement in some eyebrow-raising deals has sparked fears that the once famously resourceful club no longer has a coherent approach to recruitment It is not unusual to hear Kia Joorabchian offering his thoughts via TalkSport but, when he began discussing David Luiz’s future 10 days ago, ears pricked up among many who deal regularly with Arsenal. One particular line from the agent served as a flashing light. The Premier League’s contract deadline of 23 June was fast approaching and Joorabchian believed there was plenty of work to do. “There are several issues within the whole structure that will be resolved,” he said, before returning to the theme of his high-profile client. Joorabchian’s working relationship with the Arsenal hierarchy is no secret, and he was perfectly entitled to provide a commentary. But for some who have harboured reservations about his influence it was, as one puts it, the final straw. However it was intended, the statement felt overly familia

Leeds return to top as Jack Harrison completes clinical defeat of Fulham

History was both made and respected in Elland Road’s first game with the renamed Norman Hunter Stand but the most fitting tribute to Leeds’ late great may come next month. Eight points clear of third-place Brentford with seven games to go, Leeds are on course to end their 16-year exile from the top flight. One of the biggest games Elland Road has staged in that time was the emptiest, with Marching On Together broadcast from the tannoy to an audience of 15,000 cardboard cutouts The piped-in chants of Patrick Bamford’s name were rather louder than those from the supporters at many a match but the much-maligned striker, along with Ezgjan Alioski and Jack Harrison, delivered an invaluable and ultimately emphatic win. Neil Warnock makes instant impact as Middlesbrough beat Stoke

Neil Warnock had the immediate effect Steve Gibson hoped for when Middlesbrough’s owner sacked Jonathan Woodgate on Tuesday and replaced him with a 71-year-old who is correctly billed as a Championship specialist. Warnock’s expertise was hired to try to avert relegation and, after this convincing win over a muted Stoke, Boro are two points clear of danger with seven matches left. City, though, drop to 20th and trail Boro by a place and a point, thanks to a goal in each half, one from Ashley Fletcher and the other by Marcus Tavernier. To make matters worse for Stoke, who travel to Wigan on Tuesday, they had Nick Powell sent off a minute from time. Aston Villa survival hopes suffer further blow as Dendoncker nets Wolves winner

These Wolves belong in high-class company. Nuno Espírito Santo’s team climbed to fifth in the table thanks to Leander Dendoncker’s crisply struck goal here, closing to within four points of Chelsea in the chase for Champions League qualification. Aston Villa, meanwhile, remain in deep peril at the other end, in 19th position having played a game more than their rivals. Next on the agenda for them? Liverpool and Manchester United. Dean Smith spent much of the lockdown trying to mend Villa’s rickety defence and they have certainly looked more secure since the restart. But that improvement came at the expense of attacking menace, and the chances of Villa grinding their way to survival never looked bright. So even if there were no fans present to demand boldness in this West Midlands derby, Smith opted for a theoretically more adventurous approach here, deploying two strikers and a midfield diamond with Jack Grealish at its apex. As a result, Villa’s default setting was not as deep as in

Liverpool are force again but Klopp's title tough to place in pantheon | Paul Wilson

They are undoubtedly a winning machine but the pause for coronavirus and the easy nature of the success make it difficult to know just how good Liverpool are Liverpool could still end up with a record-shattering 107 points this season, though whether they will continue to carry everything before them after winning the title so early remains to be seen. Their game against Manchester City on Thursday should offer a fairly large clue about how the champions intend to approach their remaining fixtures, though by virtue of wrapping up the title with seven matches left to play, Liverpool have already managed one of the most impressive Premier League campaigns. Whether it will be deemed the best ever probably depends on the final points tally. If it falls below the 100 mark set by City two years ago it will look less arresting in the record books, which tend not to reflect the fact that the title was won so comprehensively that rivals began to acknowledge the futility of pursuit around

Trust, patience and hard work: how Jürgen Klopp transformed Liverpool

The German was not under pressure to win titles when he arrived at Anfield in 2015 so he set about his own Project Restart. This is how he did it … Finally. An interminable wait stretching 30 years plus one lockdown is over and Jürgen Klopp stands alongside Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan as an immortal who made Liverpool champions of England and Europe. There is no asterisk attached. Liverpool’s 19th title may have arrived with the Kop eerily silent but it was a resounding triumph for a dominant, record-demolishing side. “I am not the guy who is going to shout: ‘We are going to conquer the world!’” said Klopp at his unveiling . Yet that is precisely what the 53-year-old from the small Black Forest town of Glatten has achieved. Liverpool will struggle to repeat Ferguson's run of titles, says Solskjær

Manchester United manager pays tribute to champions ‘We’re going to do everything we can to go past them’ Ole Gunnar Solskjær believes Liverpool will find it difficult to emulate the sustained success of Manchester United’s 13 Premier League titles in 20 years under Sir Alex Ferguson. Jürgen Klopp’s side clinched a 19th championship when Manchester City lost at Chelsea on Thursday. This ended a 30-year wait and Liverpool’s 23-point lead over City with seven matches left suggests a period of dominance could be established but Solskjær questioned whether United’s fiercest rivals – or any other club – could repeat Ferguson’s achievement. Inter serve up another unwelcome dose of craziness for Antonio Conte | Nicky Bandini

Arsenal's Emiliano Martínez out to seize rare chance with both hands | Nick Ames

The Argentinian goalkeeper has had years of loan spells and warming the bench but can stake a claim to be Arsenal’s No 1 after Bernd Leno’s injury Emiliano Martínez might reflect that, had it not been for a tumultuous afternoon in Stoke, the past five seasons could have turned out very differently. The Arsenal goalkeeper was 22 when, in November 2014, injuries to Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina afforded him his first crack at the top level. He was outstanding in a win over Borussia Dortmund before keeping clean sheets against West Brom and Southampton. Arsène Wenger was sufficiently impressed to decide that, if another three points followed at the then Britannia Stadium, the imposing youngster would keep his place despite Szczesny’s return. But Arsenal crumbled in familiar fashion and, while little blame could be attached to Martínez in their 3-2 defeat , Wenger reverted to what he knew. Until last Saturday, when Bernd Leno’s injury necessitated a 50-minute outing as a substitute

Knee surgery could end Sergio Agüero's domestic season with Manchester City

Agüero expected to be out for five to six weeks Pep Guardiola backs Gabriel Jesus to step in for striker Sergio Agüero’s chances of playing another domestic game for Manchester City this season may be over after he had knee surgery on Wednesday in Barcelona that is expected to keep him out for five or six weeks. Agüero was injured during Monday’s 5-0 win over Burnley and had been hopeful of missing no more than a month but the operation is set to keep him out for longer. The Premier League season ends in four and a half weeks and the FA Cup final, which City could reach, is the following weekend. Richard Nartey: 'You learn how fortunate you are growing up at Chelsea'

Young centre-back has been at Stamford Bridge since he was nine but after a season of learning on loan at Burton Albion, his release at 21 means the next step is approaching “The first thing that happened was a ball got kicked in the air at me and I got an elbow in the face,” Richard Nartey says as he recalls his gritty introduction to League One after going on loan to Burton Albion. The centre-back, who has been at Chelsea since he was nine, knew it was time to sink or swim. He was making his professional debut after coming off the bench against Bristol Rovers in August and it was a rude awakening. “I was a bit dazed,” Nartey says. “It was my wake-up call. I was telling myself: ‘You’ve got to give it back. You can’t act like this young person from Chelsea, otherwise people will pick on you.’ I had to show I could do all the physical stuff and let my technical side show as well.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jun/24/chel
