The stories that defined the world of sport in 2022 – video review

It’s been a momentous year for sport, which began dramatically with Novak Djokovic's deportation from Australia and inspiring moments of solidarity on and off the pitch following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. From the Lionesses bringing football home to a men's football World Cup marked by political protest, 2022 gave us historical moments throughout the year. The sporting world also said goodbye to some of its biggest legends. As 2022 comes to an end, we look back at the stories that defined the year in sport. Premier League fans’ half-term reports, part two: Leicester to Wolves

Fans on the best and worst of the season so far – and who they want to sign in the January transfer window Part one : Arsenal to Leeds It’s hard to feel happy with how it’s gone so far. There was a sense that our calamitous start to the season was a thing of the past after that impressive run of form before the World Cup break. But the dread has returned to Filbert Way after the pathetic performance against Newcastle on Boxing Day. At least we’re in the last eight of the League Cup, although we’re up against the Geordies again … Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/dec/31/premier-league-fans-half-term-reports-part-two-leicester-to-wolves

Relentless football fixture list is damaging the physical and mental health of players | Maheta Molango

Games are being crammed into every space and footballers are rarely consulted – eventually they will say ‘enough is enough’ For football fans, as the song says, this is meant to be the most wonderful time of the year. A special feature of the English game is the rapid succession of festive fixtures in front of big Christmas crowds. Going to a game is a central and longstanding part of many family traditions. But after the feast of football at the men’s World Cup, the current glut of games risks feeling a little like that final mince pie that proves difficult to get down. To stretch the analogy further, overindulgence at Christmas is often followed by a much-needed period of abstinence in January. Not this season. In the men’s game, the match schedule for January represents a chaotic jigsaw of league fixtures and domestic cup ties seemingly shoehorned into whatever gap is available. It’s enough to make even the most ravenous football fan think about loosening their belt. Continue rea

Howard Webb returns to England on mission to boost referees’ confidence

Premier League’s first chief refereeing officer feels standards have improved but admits more transparency is needed “When you think about refereeing it’s very much about confidence,” says Howard Webb. “It’s a mental discipline, you need resilience to be successful at it. My job is to make sure that referees are going into their job feeling confident and supported.” After eight years away, the most successful referee of the Premier League era has come back to the English game. His contract overseeing officials in the US had come to an end and he had been in discussions about coming home in some form for a while, but Webb’s appointment as the first chief refereeing officer in the elite game has the feel of a necessity, as – by common consent – the men in black need all the help they can get. Teenager Stefan Bajcetic makes instant impact in Liverpool win at Aston Villa

This was not a vintage Liverpool performance by any stretch but there were glimmers of sparkle as they dispatched Aston Villa and put their foot back on the accelerator in pursuit of the top four. Mohamed Salah got the ball rolling, equalling Kenny Dalglish’s goalscoring mark for Liverpool in almost double-quick time before Virgil van Dijk increased Liverpool’s first-half advantage. Villa deservedly replied through Ollie Watkins but a composed finish by the 18-year-old substitute Stefan Bajcetic for his first Liverpool goal left the away support rattling through their version of a Christmas classic. “Merry Christmas, Everton!” they sang as the celebrations continued. Klopp’s festive message to supporters touched on various themes, from his admiration for Love, Actually and the “crazy world we are living in at the moment”, to Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat in May – “Mr Courtois had a pretty good day” – and, most pertinently, moving to “within punching distance” of the top fo

‘I just went crazy when we won!’ Lioness Chloe Kelly on her Euros triumph – and how to top it

The England striker’s goal against Germany made her a national hero and sent interest in the women’s game rocketing. But she’s not about to take her foot off the gas When Chloe Kelly’s 2022 began, the idea that a photo of herself would capture one of the defining moments of women’s football history in England, let alone of the year, was far from her mind. Kelly was battling back from an anterior cruciate ligament injury that ended her Olympic dreams. She would make her return to the pitch in April, 11 months on from her injury, and faced a race against time to get up to speed for the Euros in July. “It’s crazy,” the 24-year-old Manchester City forward says of the tournament. “Sometimes I look at the images and I’m like: ‘Wow, that actually happened.’ It’s an amazing memory and one that will stick with me for ever, and what it can do for the sport is just huge.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/dec/26/chloe-kelly-euros-t

Kalvin Phillips left out of Manchester City squad because he was ‘overweight’

Pep Guardiola says player returned from Qatar out of condition ‘He didn’t arrive in the condition to do training and to play’ Pep Guardiola has said he left out Kalvin Phillips from Thursday’s Carabao Cup win over Liverpool because the player was “overweight” and added that he will speak to the midfielder privately. Eddie Howe confident Newcastle can convert Champions League promise

Manager has praise for players he’s got and eyes on impressive additions as Premier League resumes with his side third Eddie Howe would later admit he was not really thirsty but that failed to prevent Newcastle’s manager from unscrewing the top of the small bottle of water in front of him and taking a long, very slow, sip. It was such an obvious timewasting tactic that, by the time he put it back on the table, laughter filled the room. “I’m conveniently drinking my water,” Howe joked after being asked whether he would prefer to finish in the Premier League’s top four or win the Carabao Cup. Arteta keeps the faith in Arsenal’s resurrection despite absence of Jesus

Manager confident his side can cope with challenges but league leaders must find a way to prosper without injured key forward When Gabriel Jesus limped from the Lusail Stadium field on 2 December, having played 64 minutes for Brazil in a game against Cameroon they could afford to lose – and eventually did – the effect on his club bordered on catastrophic. Thursday brought the regrettable sight of Jesus on crutches at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground. “Progressing”, followed by a series of motivational emojis, was the one-word social media message. Mark Robins gives Coventry City hope that dark clouds are lifting

Popular manager is plotting an unlikely playoff push after steering the Championship club through choppy waters Coventry City’s season began with them unable to play home games due to the state of the pitch, more recently they have received an eviction notice from the stadium and are in the process of being taken over. Marcus Rashford solo goal helps Manchester United beat Burnley

On 57 minutes Marcus Rashford showed the finest way to return from a World Cup. The No 10 collected inside Manchester United’s half and, after turning the afterburners on, propelled himself at Jordan Beyer along the right. The centre-back kept backpedalling and Rashford kept coming until slick footwork bedazzled the Burnley man and in a flash, Bailey Peacock-Farrell was beaten by a laser of a finish, on the angle, from inside the area. For Rashford, a star turn for England at Qatar 2022 with three goals, this was a ninth United goal this season – perhaps his finest for the club – and ensured Erik ten Hag’s side are in the quarter-finals. While Mac Allister partied in Buenos Aires, having been given a fortnight off after his heroics in Qatar, the rest of the Brighton team faced a far less appealing trip to chilly south-east London as their domestic season resumed. Tielemans sparks Leicester into life in Carabao Cup cruise over MK Dons

This went exactly how Brendan Rodgers planned it. Thirty-eight days after their last competitive fixture, Leicester made light work of an MK Dons side with bigger battles to fight as they eased into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup courtesy of goals from Youri Tielemens, Ayoze Pérez and Jamie Vardy. An emphatic victory over a League One team struggling against relegation may not be the most significant of his managerial career but after their terrible start to the season, Rodgers will understand its importance. A sizeable contingent of away fans who had made the short journey down the M1 and packed out their end here certainly went home feeling happy, with some even predicting Leicester could be on their way to Wembley again after their FA Cup triumph 18 months ago. “We go into all the cup competitions thinking we have got a chance,” admitted Leicester’s assistant manager, Chris Davies. “It’s a case of trying to build momentum now before the next round.” Continue reading... fr

This World Cup should be remembered for its racism. But Qatar is not the victim | Pete Pattisson

The misery of migrant workers involved in staging the tournament is plain to see. No amount of spin can cover up the structural racism involved When Nasser al-Khater, Qatar’s World Cup chief, was asked two weeks ago about the recent death of a migrant worker, his response was both shocking and revealing. “We’re in the middle of a World Cup and we have a successful World Cup. And this is something you want to talk about right now? I mean death is a natural part of life,” he said, before going on to offer condolences to the family of the deceased. First, a sense of outrage and indignation that anyone would challenge Qatar’s narrative about the World Cup and then a callous indifference for the workers who made it possible. ‘Like paradise’: Argentina erupts in celebration of World Cup win

Streets of central Buenos Aires are a cacophony of yelling and horns after shootout victory against France Paris reaction: ‘You can’t begrudge Messi’ Match report: how Argentina won it If there’s one thing Argentina fans have learned in this World Cup, it’s that you can’t rest on your laurels when you’re 2-0 up. But after a dramatic penalty shootout, there was delight in Buenos Aires that Argentina will be bringing home football’s most coveted trophy. In La Puerta Roja, a bar in the downtown San Telmo district, so many people packed in early to watch the final that there was a queue outside an hour and a half before kickoff. The air smelled of adrenaline and the commentators could barely be heard over the din of yelling, hands banging on tables, and the occasional glass smashing. ‘Your life depends on whether Argentina wins’: Buenos Aires at fever pitch as Messi’s team face France

In the capital, where Maradona is worshipped as a god, World Cup victory would take on a spiritual dimension In June, Tomás Kuklis visited family in his native Argentina from his home in New York. When conversation turned to the upcoming World Cup, it brought back the happiest memories of his childhood. He was rocked by a wave of nostalgia for friends and food, but especially for his lifelong passion: football. So, he took a bold decision: he would sell all his things and move back to Buenos Aires to watch the tournament. It was a choice some might consider radical. Ousmane Dembélé’s unlikely France comeback set for thrilling final act

The winger has grafted to lift France to another World Cup final but now wants to shine against former club-mate Lionel Messi Ousmane Dembélé is a player who drifts in and out of focus. While Kylian Mbappé explodes down the left flank for France, Dembélé is more of a gliding presence on the opposite side. Sometimes marking him is like trying to catch smoke. The France winger has this lovely way of floating up the right, a softness to the way he dips inside and out, and when he is in full flow he is a bewitching sight, so slippery as he unbalances defenders with his feints, body swerves and zigzagging dribbling. Those are the moments when it is easy to see why Barcelona, wounded after losing Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain, spent £97m on Dembélé five years ago. The problem, though, is there have not been enough good times for the 25-year-old. Sometimes he looks special but he often lets games pass him by, underlining why he barely featured for France in the four years leading up to this

But France have that air of a team destined to win even when they’re not doing much, and in the reinvented Antoine Griezmann have perhaps the best player of these finals. The final is preposterously hard to call, with intriguing battles all over the place and certainly deserves more than to be reduced to a face-off between the two Qatar-employed superstars spearheading the respective sides’ attacks. Luka Modric still at very top and World Cup has enhanced his legacy | Nick Ames

Falling short will sting but, if this is the end for the Croatia midfielder, the past three weeks have only served to enhance his legacy It began in Basel, an era ago, with a Lionel Messi goal. Only Luka Modric will know whether it wound down, in this monstrous and dystopian supplement to Doha, with exactly the same thing. At the end there was a hug from an old clubmate, Ángel Di María; then a more meaningful conference, arm around the younger man’s shoulder, with his dear friend Mateo Kovacic. Neither of them had been able to do quite enough this time and that is an achingly rare lament. Modric and Croatia have long exceeded whatever should naturally be expected and, when the dust settles, they will know the same was true in Qatar. If his 81st‑minute departure turns out to have been a final action at this rarefied level, it was still some way to go. The Croatia legend also plays on a different plane and will lead a masterful midfield in the semi-final against Argentina “Messi may be the star of this summer” said Peter Drury in 2006 as a certain 18-year-old Argentinian skipped inside Croatia’s Stjepan Tomas before bending a beautiful shot inside the far post from the edge of the area. Messi’s first international goal came in his sixth appearance, in one of those meaningless mid-season friendlies organised in a neutral country (literally Switzerland in this case), and we know the rest of the story. England manager taking time to reflect after World Cup exit ‘I’ve found large parts of the last 18 months difficult’ Gareth Southgate has dropped a strong hint that he could walk away from the England manager’s job, saying he feels “conflicted” about whether to stay on in light of the various lows of the past 18 months. ‘Sometimes it’s cruel’: Spain depart World Cup cursing shootout

Luis Enrique’s side misfired again from the penalty spot, failing to disguise that they have won just twice in 90 minutes in the past two tournaments Luis Enrique asked for a thousand penalties; he got a thousand passes. Spain exited the World Cup early, and in style. There is always something sudden about how it ends, even if it’s been coming, even as you know it could happen. “All that’s left now is nothing,” Unai Simon said when it was all over. “Just [the need] to assimilate the fact that we’re out, that none of this has brought any reward.” It was late, and it was done. The following morning at 9.28 Spain’s bus pulled out of Qatar University, heading to the airport. World Cup 2022 briefing: four sides still standing after quarter-final drama

Argentina will play Croatia and France take on Morocco in the semi-finals; it will be a great story whoever lifts the trophy One of the most exhilarating, yet also brutal, things about a World Cup is the way it reaches a crescendo. The games become less frequent, from four in a day at the start to four a week at the end, but they are increasingly imbued with a savage jeopardy. Careers are defined, for richer and poorer, potential champions are bumped off without warning or sentiment like Janet Leigh in Psycho, and before you know it there are only a few teams left standing. World Cup 2022 briefing: will England outflank France in last eight?

There is more than the Mbappé factor to consider in quarter-final battle of the wings His political compass may have gone haywire, but Arsène Wenger still knows his left wing from his right. In his latest tactical briefing as part of Fifa’s technical study group, analysing the data from the group stage, he drew attention to the fact that the majority of entries into the final third had come from the left and right channels – 30% and 28% respectively – while goals from crosses in open play were up 83% on Russia 2018. “Does that mean that the teams that have the best wide players are the teams that have the best chance to win the World Cup?” he asked with a rhetorical flourish. “I believe there is something in that and in the final result of the competition.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/dec/10/world-cup-2022-briefing-will-england-outflank-france-in-last-eight

Tite to step down amid criticism after Brazil’s defeat to Croatia

Head coach has confirmed he will leave after six years in charge of the Seleção following World Cup quarter-final exit on penalties Tite has confirmed that he will step down as Brazil coach after six years in charge. The 61-year-old had always maintained that he would leave after completing a full World Cup cycle, and so his reign will end with the 4-2 defeat on penalties to Croatia in the World Cup quarter-finals. “The cycle has ended, and I keep to my word,” he said. “There are other great professionals that can replace me.” But in a sober and largely emotionless press conference, Tite left with a defence of his team’s record, not just against Croatia but in the tournament as a whole. “When their goalkeeper is the best player on the field, the game is talking to you,” he said in reference to Croatia’s Dominik Livakovic. “We had to be more effective in making goals. But did Brazil show their best? Overall, yes. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguar

World Cup 2022 briefing: Louis van Gaal is a man apart in Qatar

Louis van Gaal’s Dutch team may not play beautiful football but winning the trophy would be a fitting feelgood tale Louis van Gaal as the sentimental choice to win this World Cup feels like a fault in the space-time continuum. And yet the austere, brusque character who led Ajax to glory in the 1990s and whose tedious freeze-frame football had mid-2010s Manchester United fans barrelling to the concourses has reconfigured as world football’s friendly uncle. His battle with cancer and the reality that, at 71, this will likely be his final stand on the world stage has softened hearts, though. He has softened, too. Brazil and Tite wary of ‘Croatian resilience’ in toughest hurdle yet

Zlatko Dalic’s savvy and seasoned core will offer Brazil’s flair players a different sort of test in World Cup quarter-final Tite had just pledged to dance along with his Brazil squad, and to hell with the churls, when he alighted upon another form of visual display. “When we paint a painting, the entire painting is the athletes,” he said. “They are the ones who are portrayed in this painting and we are just participants. We just contribute to the painting; the painting is just the players themselves.” If they are to draw a line under two barren decades, Brazil will have to master all the arts. The choreographed routines that greeted each goal against South Korea were looked upon dimly in some quarters but that is a trifling concern. The more pressing theme is whether Croatia, with their savvy and seasoned core, will allow as many opportunities for festivity when they face Tite’s players in the last eight. ‘Messi is liberated’: Jorge Valdano on Argentina, politics and his goal in ‘86

Former striker discusses his World Cup triumphs and heartbreaks, and the current Argentina side’s chances against the Netherlands Jorge Valdano should have been at the Monumental; instead he was standing alone in a bar. He can still remember its name: Rincón de la Victoria. Just him and a group of Dutch fans looking at the screen, wondering what might have been. Mention Argentina and the Netherlands , who face each other on Friday night, and that’s the moment that comes to his mind. The 1978 final. Ticker tape, Mario Kempes and, clearest of all, Rob Rensenbrink hitting the post. “I watched with ‘long teeth’, envy,” he admits. He was missing out on Argentina winning their first World Cup; he couldn’t know it then, but he wouldn’t miss out on the second. Thirty-six years on from Mexico 86, Valdano would love a third, a spectator again but in the stadium, not some bar. “I asked [the coach César Luis] Menotti. He said if the World Cup started that day, I’d be in the squad. ‘What I can’t
