Ten years on: how Abu Dhabi ownership transformed Manchester City

From toilets with no doors and ‘the Temple of Doom’, City have made other top clubs fearful of an era of dominance at home and in Europe It was the look on Mark Hughes’s face that lingered in the memory. His first press conference since that seminal day – 1 September 2008 – when Manchester City came under the ownership of the Abu Dhabi royal family . Hughes was behind his desk in the manager’s office, trying to make sense of it all, and occasionally looking up to the whiteboard where Robinho’s name had been added to his team for their weekend game. Robinho? No words were necessary. Everything was very different at Manchester City back then. The greeting at the main entrance came in the Glaswegian accent of Jim Corbett, a former bombardier, in the hut he had decorated with posters of Ricky Hatton, rather than the welcome you can expect today from a small battalion of security guards, with their walkie-talkies, blazers and dangling earpieces. Unai Emery says Mesut Özil needs to adapt to different positions at Arsenal

• Spanish manager says Özil has trained normally all week • German playmaker missed last Saturday’s win over West Ham Mesut Özil is back in contention for a place in the Arsenal starting lineup at Cardiff but the challenge of adapting to the needs of his new manager remains. Unai Emery strongly denied he had fallen out with the club’s highest-paid player but said Özil would be expected to show flexibility and play in positions other than his preferred No 10 role. Dispute with Egyptian FA will not affect Mohamed Salah’s focus, says Klopp

• Liverpool manager confident star striker will rise above row • ‘He wants to play for his country and he wants to play for us‘ Jürgen Klopp is confident Mohamed Salah’s row with Egypt’s football association will not affect his focus at Liverpool or commitment to the national team. The Liverpool manager talked with Salah about the his dispute with the EFA over security and image rights, which resurfaced this week when the forward outlined his concerns over Egypt’s World Cup preparations. Klopp does not believe the controversy will distract Salah on the pitch, or prompt him to quit international football, but admits the dispute needs to be resolved as a matter of urgency. Middlesbrough snuff out Leeds’ Samuel Sáiz as top two fight out feisty stalemate

Tony Pulis does not really do small talk and his address to the players on joining Middlesbrough cut characteristically to the chase. “I’m not here to mess around, said the new manager. “I’m here to win promotion.” That was late last December and a near miss in the playoffs and an assiduous pre-season later and Pulis seems determined to stick to that pledge. Well before the end of a warm Yorkshire night featuring more bookings (eight) than shots on target, when pressing eclipsed final-ball precision, an unusually agitated Marcelo Bielsa knew he had a serious rival at the Championship summit. Sol Bamba: ‘I love going into a tackle, winning a challenge or a header’

After a nomadic career the central defender has found a home at Cardiff and a manager, Neil Warnock, that gets the best out of him Sol Bamba knows what the message will be from Neil Warnock as he leaves Cardiff’s home dressing room on Sunday. “Before we go out, the gaffer always reminds me and says: ‘Don’t be Beckenbauer. Just kick or head it. When it’s on, pass it, but if it’s not on, just put it up there.’ And that’s why I like him – he’s honest.” Bamba, by his own admission, has not always been an easy player to manage, particularly in his early days at Paris Saint-Germain, where an Argentinian centre-back by the name of Mauricio Pochettino tried to take him under his wing, but there is something about Warnock that gets the best out of him. Told that Cardiff’s manager thinks the world of him, Bamba chuckles but sounds sincere when he replies: “I think the world of him as well.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/aug/31/sol-

Crystal Palace v Southampton: match preview

Roy Hodgson’s first game as Crystal Palace manager was almost a year ago at home to these opponents, a contest surrendered to Steve Davis’s solitary goal. The hosts are more cohesive as a unit these days and will offer a sterner test, though recent defeats to Liverpool and Watford have checked the optimism generated through pre-season. Max Meyer, impressive in his cameos to date, could make his first league start, while Southampton fret over the fitness of Danny Ings, a striker who had interested Palace over the summer. Bournemouth’s Jefferson Lerma aims to match success of N’Golo Kanté

The Colombia midfielder attracted the admiration of Florentino Pérez and Real Madrid while in Spain but wants to make his mark in the Premier League This summer the World Cup came to El Cerrito, the Colombian municipality that directly translates as the Small Hill, as friends and family of Jefferson Lerma painted the town yellow. Locals, armed with placards and vuvuzelas, held street parties and huddled to watch the midfielder help his country to the last 16, where they came unstuck on penalties against England . Colombia were out but Lerma had played in each of their four games in Russia and returned home to a hero’s welcome; he was mobbed for autographs, greeted by a huge banner that read orgullo del cerro , the pride of the hill, and that night he was given the most spectacular and surreal guard of honour . People lined the roads as Lerma was paraded across town, waving from the roof of a fire engine, its sirens drowned out by an unorthodox escort of beeping motorcyclists frantical

All eyes on Usain Bolt as he makes debut as footballer | Jack Austin

The world’s fastest man was neither good nor did he disgrace himself, but there is a great deal of work to be done “It’s not about Usain Bolt.” Those were the pre-match comments of Central Coast Mariners head coach Mike Mulvey ahead of the game with the Central Coast Select XI on Friday night. That message had clearly not been relayed to the Gosford crowd donning masks of the fastest man alive. Or the local newspaper that temporarily renamed itself to the Usain Bolt Express Advocate. Or the television channel that had a dedicated “Bolt watch” in the bottom corner of their coverage. Or the head of the A-League who made the trip especially to see him. It was very much about Usain Bolt. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/aug/31/all-eyes-on-usain-bolt-as-he-makes-debut-as-footballer

'No pasarán': Spain laps up Clapton CFC's anti-fascist football kit

London non-league club’s shirt salutes International Brigades who fought in Spanish civil war A London non-league football club’s away kit has become a surprise hit in Spain, because of the anti-fascist message embroidered into it. Clapton Community FC have taken more than 5,400 pre-orders for their shirts, after pictures of the kit gained media attention on the continent. The red, purple and yellow shirt was worn for the first time last Saturday, and the colour scheme is inspired by the International Brigades who fought in the Spanish civil war. The back of the shirt features the slogan “no pasarán” , meaning “they shall not pass”, which was used by anti-fascist fighters in the 1930s. It also features the three-pointed star of the International Brigades, and was released to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the conflict. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Iheanacho looks to impress, what now for Mourinho’s shambolic defence and no change for Rafa at Man City Despite not dropping a point or conceding a goal, Liverpool have yet to really hit their stride in the current campaign. West Ham took very little beating in their opener, while subsequent victories over Crystal Palace and Brighton were a mite laboured. An away trip to Leicester on Saturday lunchtime should provide another reasonably stiff test ahead of what is likely to be a more challenging trip to Tottenham Hotspur after the international break. Leicester clearly missed the searing pace of the suspended Jamie Vardy against Southampton and Kelechi Iheanacho struggled to impress in his role as replacement. The striker got off the mark for the season against Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and with Vardy sitting out the last instalment of a three-match ban , he needs a big performance against the – thus far – impregnable two-man portcullis that is Virgil van Dijk and J

More than a game: not just gold on line for Son Heung-min in Asian Games final | John Duerden

The pressure building on South Korea’s captain reaches a crescendo on Saturday when he could win military exemption Arguably the biggest game of football this weekend takes place in the unlikely location of West Java, where South Korea take on Japan in the final of the 2018 Asian Games. Rarely has a football tournament been so much about one player and onlookers around the world have found themselves fretting almost as much as those in Seoul about the fate of the Korean captain Son Heung-min. It all ends, one way or another, on Saturday as the biggest rivals in Asia meet at Pakansari Stadium in Cibinong. The Samurai Blue would love to win but the Taeguk Warriors have to – only gold would mean military exemption for the 20 players in the Korean squad. That is the only reason Tottenham Hotspur let Son leave the early stages of the Premier League season to play in a far-flung, regional Under-23 tournament (he is one of three overage players allowed). Manchester United deny talk of rift between Ed Woodward and José Mourinho

• Woodward has made several visits to United’s training ground • Vice-chairman also in telephone contact with the Glazer family Ed Woodward has been making an increasing number of visits to Manchester United’s training ground over the past two weeks with suggestions from some quarters José Mourinho could be one defeat from the sack. Burnley’s Europa League dream ends with draw against Olympiakos

• Burnley 1-1 Olympiakos (Olympiakos win 4-2 on aggregate) • Daniel Podence and Matej Vydra swap goals but Clarets are out Burnley’s brief European odyssey came to an end in the final play-off round when they were unable to score the two goals necessary to take them through to the Europa League proper, though it was certainly not through the want of trying. The home side fairly peppered the Olympiakos goal all evening, hitting the woodwork and producing a succession of chances. The Greek side rode their luck at times – on another night Sam Vokes could easily have had a hat-trick – though ultimately Burnley were not clinical enough in a match they dominated. With Burnley still to win a game in the Premier League, and Manchester United due on Sunday, a European exit might not be the worst fate that could befall the club, though it was a little cruel when Olympiakos, after 83 minutes of last-ditch defending, saw Daniel Podence put the tie beyond reach. Sam Allardyce loses case against Daily Telegraph for paper’s ‘sting’

• Press regulator rules against former England manager • Ipso says newspaper justified in subterfuge The former England manager Sam Allardyce has lost his complaint that the Daily Telegraph broke journalism’s rules by sending an undercover reporter to propose a business deal and discuss rules on the third-party ownership of footballers. Allardyce lost his job managing the national team in September 2016 as a result of the sting, in which one of the newspaper’s reporters posed as a representative of a fake sports management agency and secretly recorded their conversations. The press regulator Ipso concluded that the Daily Telegraph’s subterfuge was justified on the basis that it was a “productive and proportionate” way to investigate the types of commercial relationships Allardyce was willing to consider and the findings “could reasonably be considered to demonstrate sufficiently serious impropriety” to justify publication. Luke Shaw’s England recall leaves no place for World Cup star Ashley Young

• Young out of England squad to play Spain and Switzerland • Full-back said to understand Gareth Southgate’s decision Ashley Young will be an absentee on Thursday when Gareth Southgate names his first England squad since the run to the World Cup semi-finals, with the manager considering a recall for Luke Shaw. Southgate has spoken to Young who, unlike Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill , has no intention of retiring from the national team, having played such a key role in Russia, not least with his set-piece delivery. Nottingham Forest’s Matty Cash and Gil Dias end Newcastle’s comeback

For about a minute Newcastle thought they had got away with it. They had trailed since the second minute to a goal by Daryl Murphy but Salomón Rondón came off the bench to bail them out with a stoppage-time equaliser. Or so it seemed. It turned out Rafael Benítez’s team could not even hold on for a penalty shootout, because after Karl Darlow spilled a cross from the left Matty Cash walloped home for Aitor Karanka’s Championship side. Then, just to confirm their superiority and Newcastle’s decrepitude, Forest added a third goal through Gil Dias in a crazy finish. The in-form players who can freshen up the England squad

As a new international cycle begins, Gareth Southgate has some exciting options to improve the team he took to the World Cup By Martin Laurence for WhoScored Gareth Southgate knows expectations will be on the rise after England fell back in love with its national team at the World Cup. With both Gary Cahill and Jamie Vardy stepping aside from international football this week , two of the three 30-somethings who travelled to Russia have made way for the next generation of talent. Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho – both 18 – could be included in the squad for the upcoming fixtures against Spain and Switzerland, but there are also plenty of first-team Premier League players who will be hoping to force their way into Southgate’s plans. Jamie Vardy: ‘I’m a nightmare on the pitch – I get abuse but I give it back’

The Leicester striker who has walked away from England has the perfect antidote to raging supporters – scoring sensational goals As Jamie Vardy ushers Boris, Billy and Ralph out of the door and the sound of barking becomes more distant, the conversation inside turns to Harry Kane, Sergio Agüero and Romelu Lukaku – the only players to have scored more Premier League goals than the Leicester striker since his top-flight debut in 2014. “So I’ve still got room for improvement,” Vardy says. There is the hint of a smile on his face as he delivers that response but the message behind it is serious. “I should have scored more” is the first thing Vardy says when it is put to him that 20 Premier League goals last season, for a team who finished ninth, was a decent return. Even standout moments, such as that terrific controlled volley against West Brom in March, when Vardy connected so sweetly with a ball that dropped over his shoulder, and with his weaker foot, are brushed over. Is José Mourinho still the man to fix Manchester United’s problems? | Jamie Jackson

Many fans at Old Trafford are blaming the Portuguese for the club’s poor start in the Premier League but Mourinho can turn things around José Mourinho may point to how all three of Tottenham Hotspur’s goals were down to errors in his rearguard and use this as evidence of why he wanted an elite centre-back this summer. Yet closer examination makes a case that the manager himself is culpable for the leaky defence against Spurs and that its past record shows this should not be a problem department. Ander Herrera played Tottenham onside for Lucas Moura’s first goal, having been a Mourinho selection in an unfamiliar centre-back role in an (also new) 3-3-3-1. And what good has Mourinho’s public pursuit of a new centre-half done to the confidence of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling? On Monday night Harry Kane outjumped Jones and Smalling was undone by Lucas’s trickery for the Brazilian’s second goal. Manchester United stand by José Mourinho and see cause for hope

Football transfer rumours: Atlético and Milan chasing Anthony Martial?

Today’s fluff is demanding contempt, contempt, contempt Seeing as José Mourinho thinks Manchester United didn’t lose “from the strategic point of view and from the tactical point of view” in their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur , it’s probably safe to assume he would also scoff at the notion that they are a club in crisis. Nevertheless, the c-word is being bandied about willy-nilly across back pages and if what happened to United at Old Trafford isn’t something approaching a mess, it will, to paraphrase Sheriff Ed Tom Bell in No Country For Old Men, certainly do til a mess gets there. One of several players scapegoated for United’s previous loss against Brighton , Anthony Martial, was left out of Mourinho’s matchday squad for the Spurs game and has made no secret of his desire to leave the club. While Mourinho would happily sell him to raise funds for more of those centre-backs who can’t defend properly that he seems to have so much time for, Ed Woodward has already

Lucas Moura double for Spurs helps deepen gloom at Manchester United

If nothing else, there was no mutiny. José Mourinho still heard his name being sung and, at the final whistle, Old Trafford was not too unkind on the manager or his players. Yet these are deeply troubling times for Manchester United, with the chants of “you’re not special any more” loud and clear from the corner housing the victorious Tottenham Hotspur supporters. The problem for Mourinho is that it is threatening to become the soundtrack to United season. This is the first time they have lost two of their opening three fixtures since the 1992-93 season. Back then, however, United had Sir Alex Ferguson and a spirit of togetherness to recover and win the Premier League. Who, realistically, could imagine the same of this United side? It is certainly not an exaggeration to describe it as a crisis after a wretched second-half display featuring a headed goal from Harry Kane, two crisp finishes from Lucas Moura and a mass walkout of the home supporters once Spurs had scored for the third ti

Earth moves under Valladolid's feet to spoil La Liga return against Barcelona | Sid Lowe

Shambolic pitch and a late equaliser ruled out by VAR put a dampener on the little club’s first night back in the big time Real Valladolid’s big night had almost arrived but the pitch hadn’t. The first delivery, from down the road in Ávila, was no good and got sent back; the second was loaded on to trucks in Portugal only for someone to steal the petrol from their tanks, or so they said; and it was Thursday by the time the final strips of turf were rolled out, all-too-briefly covering the 105m by 68m space that had stood bare since promotion. By then, there were just two days to go before the José Zorrilla staged a first division game for the first time in four years. Their return had been a bit of a miracle; now they needed another. Kovac makes a winning start as Müller begins healing process at Bayern

After miserable summer, Thomas Müller was the central figure in Bayern’s win over Hoffenheim on Niko Kovac’s Bundesliga bow as manager Even Arjen Robben, in his state of annoyance, laughed at the cliche of it. It was another August Friday night opening for the Bundesliga as champions, another win for Bayern Munich and another goal for the flying Dutchman – and as with every time when he doesn’t start a match, even at the ripe old age of 34, he wore a buzz of indignation around him. So, was he annoyed to be left out? “Yes,” he chuckled, with necessary brevity. Plus ça change, you might think, as neutrals cling to unlikely scraps of hope that there might be a title race worthy of the name over the coming months. If Bayern remain overwhelming favourites, though, there is a sense that they come into this season needing to put a few things right. Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Arsenal’s defence requires urgent attention; Bournemouth cannot keep relying on their powers of recovery; Wolves’ Rui Patricio has produced an early contender for save of the season Arsenal’s defending against West Ham was a shambles. Their back four were constantly disconnected while the midfield in front of them offered as much protection as a piece of tissue in a storm gun fight. West Ham scored once but should have racked up more. These are, of course, early days in Unai Emery’s time at Arsenal and with a new manager comes a period of adjustment. But having conceded six goals in their opening three games of the season, there needs to be notable improvement soon – what is encouraging is the players appear aware of that, too. “When we do not have the ball we have to make fouls. Then we don’t take the counterattack,” the centre‑back Sokratis Papastathopoulos said. It may be cynical tactic but it is one that has served Manchester City well under Pep Guardiola and reflects a level of c

Arsenal manager Unai Emery fails to mask friction with Mesut Özil

The midfielder missed his team’s win over West Ham due to illness but there is growing tension between him and Emery Unai Emery’s English is not very good. That is not a criticism but a fact and something the Spaniard freely acknowledges. If anything he deserves credit for trying hard to speak in a foreign language during these nascent days as Arsenal’s head coach but it has led to him often struggling to get a clear message across. There are times, though, when Emery expresses himself perfectly well – so long as those listening are prepared to read between the lines. Which brings us to Mesut Özil’s absence from Arsenal’s 3-1 victory against West Ham United. What should have been a moment for Emery to immerse himself in celebration of a first victory in charge of a new club in a new country has instead become dominated by talk of a rift between manager and player. Wolves’ attacking verve offers new approach to facing Manchester City | Nick Miller

Contained but courageous, Nuno Espírito Santo’s tactics posed Pep Guardiola’s champions serious problems at Molineux To give an idea of how well Wolves played on Saturday, Pep Guardiola did not seem especially upset that his side took only a point against them. That is Manchester City: best team in the land and widely expected to win the Premier League by about a million points, not unhappy with a draw against a newly promoted team. It was not just that Wolves played well at Molineux but rather the manner of how they approached the game that was impressive. This was a lesson in controlled positivity, a balance between attack and defence and maybe an example of how to play against this City side. Furthermore it was proof that defence and damage limitation does not have to be the default against the defending champions. Newcastle’s DeAndre Yedlin hands points to Chelsea after own goal

The temperature felt far too low for Italy in August and the rain had a drearily English persistence about it but for, long periods, Maurizio Sarri must have felt convinced he was somehow back in Serie A. Rafael Benítez preceded Chelsea’s manager at Napoli and, clearly remembering that schooling in Catenaccio, very nearly succeeded in choreographing his Newcastle United side to a tactically astute draw against possession monopolising visitors. Quickfire Aleksandar Mitrovic at the double for Fulham to stun Burnley

The thought will be anathema to most football romantics, but Burnley’s hopes for the season may hinge on an honourable defeat. This particular reverse, against a Fulham side that could have scored twice as many, did not really fit the category; eyes at Turf Moor will now be on the two-goal deficit they must overturn against Olympiakos on Thursday, though, and on current evidence a prolonging of their Thursday-to-Sunday regimen would put them at risk of serious trouble. A relatively kind start to the campaign has now brought just one point and, not helped by the kind of defending that will set alarm bells ringing, they were outmanoeuvred here by opponents whose passing and movement, led by the marvellous Jean Michaël Seri, was simply on a different level. That fact will bring relief to Slavisa Jokanovic, who will feel confident of his team’s prospects after seeing goals from Seri – with a stunning strike – and André Schürrle sandwich two headers from Aleksandar Mitrovic. Rangers left frustrated after Motherwell’s Peter Hartley steals dramatic draw

Peter Hartley had the last laugh over Rangers as the Motherwell captain’s 94th-minute equaliser sealed a 3-3 draw at Fir Park. Hartley had been forced to issue an apology on Thursday after mocking the former Rangers defender Fábio Cardoso for the broken nose he sustained against Motherwell last season. But it was Hartley who grabbed the injury-time equaliser as Steven Gerrard’s side threw away victory for the second time in three Premiership games. Pereyra and Holebas deliver historic win for Watford over Crystal Palace

Watford’s pristine start to the new season has been maintained, with this a victory to be cherished in this corner of Hertfordshire. Their collisions with Crystal Palace have tended to be feisty over recent years, and rarely won on home territory, so there was delight to be had in claiming a third successive win at the start of a top‑flight season for the first time in their history at the expense of these opponents. Even now those pessimistic preseason noises about a campaign of toil lying ahead feel deceptive. Once Watford found their rhythm here, and it did take them time, there was a fine blend of attacking zest and aggression to their game which, at the very least, should keep them well clear of trouble for another season. Women’s game flourishes despite ill will from football’s dinosaurs

Women’s football has a tradition of forward thinking and could be one step away from finally overcoming antiquated attitudes Now here’s a thing. Of the 81 posts in the comments section of a recent football column on the Guardian website, over 25% were deleted by moderators on the grounds that they “didn’t abide by our community standards”. Often a genteel way of saying they have been expunged for being excessively abusive or obnoxious, these purges are depressingly common “below the line” of articles posted on our football site, many of which tend to prompt comical levels of mouth-foaming among the more rabidly one-eyed and tribal supporters of assorted high-profile teams. The kind of super-fans who convey the impression they would do anything to support their team except attend an actual game, these keyboard warriors are surprisingly delicate souls who can be very easily riled. It should come as no surprise that the article in question was about Manchester City, one of several top-tie

Mohamed Salah strikes again as Liverpool edge past Brighton

Liverpool have not yet hit the giddy heights of the latter part of last season but they have made an almost perfect start to this one. Jürgen Klopp named an unchanged side for the third time in as many matches and watched them collect a third win, moving to the top of the Premier League in the process. Klopp has been there before, though it was almost two years ago and only a brief visit. In each of his three previous seasons in England the German has had to witness teams either running away with the league – as Manchester City and Chelsea did – or proving uncatchable, like Leicester. This time Liverpool are understandably keen to be the ones staying a step ahead, and though there is a long way to go they are setting the pace with some room left for improvement.
