Qatar World Cup criticised for ‘problematic’ carbon footprint promises

Carbon Market Watch says emissions likely underreported Fifa: ‘Organisers advancing low-carbon solutions in Qatar’ The Qatar World Cup is failing to live up to promises on reducing its carbon footprint, a new report has warned, creating another problem for the tournament. Organisers have claimed that the 32-team showpiece will be the first “carbon neutral” World Cup, meaning any emissions would be limited and offset. However Carbon Market Watch (CMW), a not-for-profit organisation which works closely with the European Union, has examined the organisers’ plans and says projected emissions have likely been underreported, with the footprint created from building seven new stadiums of particular concern. Liverpool fans caused initial problems in Paris, says French sports minister

Amelie Oudea-Castera repeats French claims of fake tickets Local youths also blamed for chaotic scenes at Stade de France France’s sports minister has reaffirmed the French government view that Liverpool fans without valid tickets were responsible for the initial crowd control problems at the Champions League final, with problems exacerbated later by local youths trying to force their way in to the game. Some French far-right politicians, such as Eric Zemmour, said the crowd trouble at Saturday’s match between Liverpool and Real Madrid was caused principally by local youths from the nearby Saint-Denis Paris suburb. Real Madrid’s golden era sustained by myth, epic and cold intelligence | Barney Ronay

Where other teams are built on systems and philosophies, Madrid mix regal self-assuredness with calculating genius As the world turned a shade of white close to midnight in Paris, dissolving into a familiar frieze – the same shapes and songs, the Champions League trophy waved about with the same sense of dieu et mon droit – there was also a feeling of something revealing itself, of a question being answered. In the build-up to Real Madrid’s narrow but decisive victory at Stade de France on Saturday night there had been a lot of talk in England about claims on greatness and ultimacy, born out of Liverpool’s own thrillingly sustained attempt to chase the sun right to the seasons’s end. Paulo Wanchope: ‘I woke every hour and a half before my Derby debut’

The Costa Rican striker on how salsa helped him score a wonder-goal, still having Raúl’s shin pad and his favourite English atmosphere Jim Smith, salsa music and a very bad night’s sleep formed the backdrop to the day that would change Paulo Wanchope’s life. Signed by Derby, the unknown Costa Rican was on his way to Old Trafford in April 1997 to make his Premier League debut against Manchester United. The striker, not long out of his teens, was nervous. “I was very anxious before the game,” says the 45-year-old. “The previous night I woke up every hour and a half. I didn’t sleep well. [Smith] understood that I wanted to be relaxed at that time. He understood that music might help me. He asked me on the team bus what sort of music I liked. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s error costs Liverpool but he remains essential | Barney Ronay

The right-back switching off let Real Madrid in during the Champions League final but his style of play is vital to his side As the final whistle blew at the Stade de France Trent Alexander-Arnold was closest to the Madrid bench, swaying to one side as the white shirts came haring on, gripped with an entirely familiar delirium. At which point Alexander-Arnold just stopped. For the next five minutes, in the middle of the smoke, the pounding noise, the crackle of static across this vast craning bowl, he stood completely still at the edge of the centre circle, bent forward slightly as though in physical pain. Jürgen Klopp came across to offer a hug. A phalanx of photographers skirted past tactfully. Eventually, as the Uefa plinth was rigged into place, he just lay down alone on the turf and held his head. Nottingham Forest’s shrewd loan deals could pay off with promotion

Spence, Garner, Zinckernagel and Davis have provided value for money by leading Steve Cooper’s side to Wembley At Wembley on Sunday Nottingham Forest’s starting XI for the Championship playoff final against Huddersfield will almost certainly include four players they do not own. Playing the loan system is about short-term gain, something Forest have become adept at, but if they go up they will require a precise plan to ensure it was not all for nothing. In the Championship, where money to buy players is scarcer than it once was, the loan market is a great place to find undervalued talent of greater quality than a team can afford on a permanent basis. There is little point in signing players on loan who are not good enough to start, something appreciated at Forest. As much research is put into those arriving for a season or six months as into permanent signings. Liverpool chase defining high in blue-chip final against Real Madrid

Jürgen Klopp’s side have the opportunity to show the world how good they are in a clash with illustrious opponents May really is the cruellest month. For Liverpool Football Club and Jürgen Klopp there is something brutal, and even darkly comic, in the current run of finals and final days, those razor-thin margins at the end of a glorious, gruelling year. Liverpool have played 62 games this season and lost only three. They have one left now, a bravura Champions League final against Real Madrid in Saint-Denis on Saturday night, a fixture that has already been relocated twice, shunted around on a kind of Bourne-franchise tour of Uefa-zone glamour spots, through Munich, St Petersburg and finally on to Paris. Manchester United consider bid for Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté

United eager to strengthen midfield after poor season Chelsea reluctant to sell favourite of Thomas Tuchel Manchester United are interested in signing N’Golo Kanté from Chelsea. Kanté’s contract expires next year and United, desperate to strengthen their midfield after underperforming last season, are keen to find out whether the France international could be sold this summer. At the moment it seems unlikely Chelsea would be willing to sell. Kanté has been a crucial player for Thomas Tuchel and although there are concerns over the 31-year-old’s injury record he remains one of the best players in the Premier League when 100% fit. He was outstanding when Chelsea won the Champions League in 2021 and the club’s new owners would have to think long and hard before deciding to sell to United. Luis Díaz must get nod from Klopp even though Real Madrid may prefer to face him | Karen Carney

Colombian’s form, pace and freshness mean he deserves to start Liverpool’s Champions League final with Salah and Mané Liverpool v Real Madrid will be decided by the finest margins, so it is good news that Jürgen Klopp has one of the finest forward lines in Europe available to him. Whichever combination he picks would be top-class but I think he will select a front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Luis Díaz. Salah has unfinished business after being forced off early on with a shoulder injury the last time these teams met in a Champions League final in 2018. Todd Boehly’s vision for Chelsea? Glossy spectacle and ruthless profit | Jonathan Liew

Judging by his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boehly will sanction big spending as long as he sees even bigger returns A billionaire completes a spectacular takeover of one of the world’s most cherished sporting institutions and immediately goes on a lavish, jawbone-loosening spending spree. New signings pile up like presents under the Christmas tree. Debts spiral into the hundreds of millions, piquing the ire and envy of their rivals. But on its own terms, it works: success is duly bought, the people placated, the sport gently bent to its will. Football referees have always been lightning rods for more general frustration with authority figures, but the Premier League era, with its overpaid pundits and its multiple camera angles, has amplified that discontent. Dean, the elite league’s most visible man in the middle for 22 years, has refereed 560 matches, dished out more than 2,000 yellow cards and a record 114 reds (at a significantly higher rate than any of his peers). Authorities searching for solutions after pitch invasions cause disquiet

The season’s climax has seen emotion turn to disorder and talks have begun into how to deal with the rise in violence The end of the season is the most emotional time in the footballing year. It’s when teams lift trophies and escape the drop and when fans give a salute to their heroes, with the Premier League promising to come to a spectacular conclusion in the last round of fixtures on Sunday. But in 2022 the season’s climax has seen emotion turn to disorder, once more causing disquiet at all levels of the game. Pitch invasions by supporters have caused trouble at Nottingham Forest, Northampton, Everton and Port Vale this week, as playoff fixtures and relegation matches ended with players being targeted by fans. On Thursday Robert Biggs, a 30-year-old Forest season-ticket holder, was jailed for 24 weeks for running on to the pitch and head-butting Sheffield United’s Billy Sharp. Regretful West Ham must make the right signings to improve

West Ham missed a great chance when they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt and Moyes knows he must strengthen his squad West Ham would have spent the past week in Seville had everything gone to plan. Instead they were thinking about what might have been when the Europa League final took place without them at the Sánchez-Pizjuán on Wednesday, the regret gnawing away at them as Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers slogged it out for 120 minutes before the Bundesliga side won the trophy on penalties . It will go down as a huge missed opportunity for West Ham. The final was a memorable event, with victory a wonderful achievement by Eintracht, but by common consensus the standard was not high. West Ham had seen better during their European run. Sevilla had offered more quality when they lost to David Moyes’s side in the last 16 . Lyon, who were well beaten by West Ham in the quarter-finals, had looked more refined than Oliver Glasner’s awkward Eintracht side. Continue reading... from Football |

Thiago remains the cool ball-playing scamp whether Liverpool are hot or cold | Barney Ronay

Supremely composed midfielder has made a real difference with his controlled passing game since arriving at Anfield There was a good Jürgen Klopp moment during Liverpool’s win at Southampton on Tuesday night. Nathan Redmond had just opened the scoring. The goal had come after a collision with a Liverpool player, drawing a minor wave of protest from the bench. Klopp has a standard move in these touchline moments: a bark of rage, a sudden pirouette, a flurry of air-punches like a man whirling around to fend off a late night pickpocket. This time he did something new and much more haunting, standing totally still on the touchline and simply pointing at the referee with a long bony finger – and then carrying on pointing for what felt like ages, eyes ablaze, coat tails billowing, like some terrifying medieval woodcut called The Guilt of Man. The final countdown to the World Cup in Qatar is still full of uncertainty

From fears over human rights to concerns over how many fans will attend, Fifa and the host nation have a lot to address With six months until Senegal take on the Netherlands at the Al Thumama Stadium in the opening game, uncertainty hangs over the World Cup in Qatar. It extends beyond fears over human rights to practical concerns: how many fans will attend the tournament? And what kind of experience will they have there? The first question is the most pressing and the answer not definitive. Signs do seem to be pointing in a clear direction, however, and a carnival of global football fans in the Gulf looks unlikely. At the time of writing, Fifa has sold 800,000 match tickets to fans. This, from a capacity of 3.1m seats, is just over a quarter of the total. In Russia four years ago, 2.5m tickets were sold to fans from a capacity of slightly more than 3m. There is some way to go if organisers hope to match, or even get close to, that total. You start to be seen as one of the ‘killers’ in front of goal. People always talk about Harry Kane – he’s a very good finisher and that’s why his goal record is so good. There are a lot of players over the years that have been like that and that’s what I want to be known for.” This week the Villa manager, Steven Gerrard, said the selfless Watkins was his own worst critic – “sometimes he can overanalyse” – but the 26-year-old is learning to be kinder to

Port Vale sink Swindon in shootout to reach playoff final amid ugly scenes

Port Vale won a nerve-jangling penalty shootout 6-5 to beat Swindon and secure their place in the League Two playoff final, where they will play Mansfield. After the tie finished 2-2 on aggregate, Aidan Stone was the home side’s hero in the shootout in front of a bumper crowd of 11,669 at Vale Park. Vale’s victory was marred by some unseemly scenes amid a post-game pitch invasion, as the visiting players appeared to be confronted by a group of fans in the centre circle. Kevin Trapp’s career-defining save lights up final for Euro nostalgists | Jonathan Wilson

Europa League final evoked showpieces of old and marked the moment Frankfurt’s goalkeeper became a hero Glory comes in many forms and it came for Kevin Trapp in the form of an astonishing save in the final minute of extra time. When Kemar Roofe’s cross was deflected into the path of Ryan Kent six yards out, a late winner seemed certain. But Trapp scuttled across his goal, spread himself and the ball cannoned away off his outstretched right leg, a block rooted in hour upon hour on the training ground, honing reflexes and response times, getting the angles right. He had four years at Paris Saint-Germain, but that save, even more than keeping out Aaron Ramsey’s penalty in the shootout , is what will define his career. In his second spell at Frankfurt, he became the man who won them their second European trophy. Milner’s command performance keeps Liverpool in fight for title | Barney Ronay

General-in-reserve never looked like a man losing a football match – as the club continue chase for the quadruple Well, it was always going that way wasn’t it? At St Mary’s, Jürgen Klopp picked a fever dream of a Liverpool first XI for the penultimate game of the Premier League season, then saw his team fall behind after 13 minutes needing to win to take this pursuit of the sun, the chase for the quadruple, to the final day. And still, somehow, it never really seemed in doubt. This Liverpool team has too much energy to stop now. And while it seems only right to point out the pursuit of the league title is still heavily asterisked, that it isn’t in Liverpool’s hands, Manchester City will be all too aware of the pressure at their backs. Granit Xhaka claims some Arsenal teammates lack ‘balls to play’ after loss

Defeat at St James’ Park leaves top-four hopes slipping away Xhaka: ‘If you’re not ready for this game, stay at home’ A seething Granit Xhaka laid into his Arsenal teammates after their disastrous defeat at Newcastle and said they did not “have the balls to play” as their Champions League hopes all but disappeared. Arsenal must beat Everton on Sunday and hope Tottenham lose at relegated Norwich if they are to make the top four; they were soundly beaten at St James’ Park by a Ben White own goal and a late clincher from Bruno Guimarães, and Xhaka’s extraordinary intervention was almost certainly born of frustration at letting a golden opportunity slip. European roundup: Victories for Milan and Inter send Serie A race to final day

Double from Martínez gives Internazionale 3-1 win Sevilla earn Champions League spot with draw A double from Argentina striker Lautaro Martínez earned Internazionale a 3-1 win at Cagliari , a victory that ensured the Serie A title race will go to the final weekend. With the leaders, Milan , having beaten Atalanta 2-0 at the San Siro earlier on Sunday, Inter had to win in Sardinia to keep the title race alive, edging in front in the 25th minute through Matteo Darmian. Martínez added a second six minutes after the break for Inter and they appeared on course for a comfortable ninth win in 10 matches in all competitions, before Charalampos Lykogiannis arrowed in a strike out of nowhere to get Cagliari back in it. Struijk strike earns draw with Brighton to keep Leeds’ survival hopes alive

Not a single Leeds supporter would have picked Pascal Struijk as the star of the penultimate act of the incredible rollercoaster ride that is the Premier League survival race. Leeds have shown little respect for the script to this point, though, so it is perhaps no surprise that a defender thrown on with seven minutes remaining scored the goal that could yet be key to keeping them in the Premier League. There are still more twists and turns to come but the scenes as Struijk frantically headed home Joe Gelhardt’s chipped cross in added time told you everything you needed to know. Elland Road came together as one at the culmination of an absorbing afternoon that left several of the home players sinking to the turf at full time, emotionally and physically spent. Klopp’s science and rigour paves way for Liverpool to win a game of inches | Jonathan Wilson

FA Cup was decided by the width of a post but Chelsea were beaten by a side that ensures tiny margins make the difference Imagine, for a moment, you’re the goalframe at the east end of Wembley. Last summer, you watched as Marcus Rashford, at the climax of that sulphurous July night , took a straight run-up, stuttered, and then, as Gianluigi Donnarumma fell to your left, dragged his penalty to your right. You like the young man, his obvious decency, his stance on various social issues – and you are an English goalframe after all. You wanted him to score. You tried to just stretch a bit further, to widen your stance, but your feet were rooted and the ball cannoned off the base of your post and away. If only he had struck it three inches more centrally you probably could have helped it in, and if you had, England would probably be European champions and Rashford might not have had such a miserable season; Manchester United might not feel like quite such a faded force in need of despera

With the Europa League final just days away, Robin McKie recalls the Scottish side’s magical Cup Winners’ Cup run Rangers take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final on Wednesday, an extraordinary achievement for a club in administration 10 years ago. Watford v Leicester: match preview

Leicester returned to the winners’ enclosure after five matches in midweek, thanks in part to playing Norwich, but largely because of Jamie Vardy slotting back into the starting lineup. It was Vardy’s first 90 minutes in the league for Leicester since 28 December after hamstring and knee injuries ravaged this year for the striker. Lucky for him relegated Watford are the next team up and he will no doubt be eyeing up another tension-releasing onslaught in front of goal. Brendan Rodgers will surely be looking at long-term replacements for Vardy if the manager himself intends to stick around at the King Power for the long haul. Thomas Tuchel stays calm amid the chaos as Chelsea’s biggest asset

Head coach has faced the club’s problems head-on and with great diplomacy and FA Cup win would be greatly prized Almost three months have passed since Thomas Tuchel’s job description changed. Previously he was the head coach. His role was to look after Chelsea’s first team, win some trophies and steer clear of controversy. Overall, despite the odd stumble here, the odd unauthorised interview from Romelu Lukaku there, life was good. Chelsea were an undisputed member of the elite and, after escaping the infighting and egos at Paris Saint-Germain, Tuchel appreciated being left to do what he loves most: coach his team and concentrate on the football. But then, as Chelsea prepared to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at the end of February, the mood shifted. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was under way which put Roman Abramovich in an awkward position. Suddenly, Tuchel was fielding questions about Abramovich’s future at Chelsea. Incredibly, he was prepared to answer them. “You’re r

Non-league standards are high but our academy players are poached for nothing | Josh Gowling

Hereford’s manager argues football’s financial divide demands a rethink to protect non-league clubs who produce talent It feels strange to say this now, but early in my playing career I would look down on the National League. It was known as the Conference then, and there was a perception that it bore no comparison to the standard in the Football League. Few people would voluntarily take a step down to that level. Now everything has changed. I would go as far as saying that the top flight of the National League is of a higher standard than League Two. The final weekend of the season looks tantalising: Stockport will be guaranteed to go up if they draw with FC Halifax Town and, whether they or Wrexham take top spot, you would fancy whichever side miss out to do well in the playoffs. There are massive clubs looking for a return to the league – Notts County, Grimsby and Chesterfield too – and you would not bet against any of them getting successive promotions if they make it. Conte-ism conjures performative suffering to leave 10-man Arsenal lost | Barney Ronay

Spurs sat back in the north London derby, then applied their shoulder to the wheel to bump and press Mikel Arteta’s side Two minutes into the second half of this north London derby , Harry Kane took the ball inside the Arsenal penalty area and entered into a chest-bumping grapple with Gabriel. Kane stalled a little, struggling to keep his feet. Then he did something that seemed to capture the physics, the newtons of this match in a single collision. Kane pushed and found no resistance, no pressure in front of him. Gabriel fell backwards, swished aside like a pair of rickety saloon bar doors. The ball was nudged back to Son Heung-min, who smashed it past Aaron Ramsdale to make the score 3-0. And this is what happened to Arsenal. They were simply overrun, pushed back by a superior force, made to shrink in the hard white lights. Resurgent Naby Keïta keeps Liverpool going when the limbs are screaming | Jonathan Liew

The midfielder, something of a forgotten man at Anfield on occasion, has found his place this season and his energy has helped to drive Jürgen Klopp’s side By the end, Alisson was trying to waste time. Sadio Mané was listlessly dribbling the ball into the corner in an attempt to burn away a few more seconds. Deep into injury time Naby Keïta started rolling around on the turf in apparent agony. Was it a cruciate? A broken leg? A debilitating muscle tear that would put him out for the season? Happily, as a victorious Keïta disappeared into the embrace of his teammates just a few seconds later, we have to conclude that he may just survive the night. Curiously, given his famously forthright views on teams adopting cynical tactics in an attempt to win games, Jürgen Klopp had very little to say about any of this afterwards. But then, perhaps it was understandable that aesthetics would be the last thing on his mind at Villa Park. This was the sort of win you have to extract like one of your

Our short-term situation is bleak but we will rebuild the city – I cannot imagine a life in Mariupol without football Before 24 February, we had everything to look forward to at FC Mariupol. We were struggling in the Ukrainian Premier League but there was a bigger picture: our infrastructure was one of the country’s most developed, and we had ambitions to build a team that would reach the Europa League. In the last four years, we played in the qualifiers twice: we felt we were on the brink of something special. We had one of the best playing surfaces around, with a new hybrid pitch; our stadium was well kept, with plans for a major redevelopment in 2025, and we had three full-sized training pitches at our base near the Sea of Azov. Young players at our academy could train on artificial turf and our facilities were expanding all the time. Now almost all of it is likely to be ruined. Watford and Hodgson relegated after Zaha gives Crystal Palace victory

As Roy Hodgson watched Watford’s inevitable demise with his hands planted firmly in his suit trousers, it all seemed most unfair. For the first time in his long and distinguished career, the former England manager has been relegated from the Premier League after a penalty from Wilfried Zaha – his 13th league goal of the campaign – secured Crystal Palace a 1-0 victory that could easily have been many more. Aston Villa’s comfortable win cranks up relegation pressure on Burnley

After working so hard to put survival back in their own hands, Burnley succumbed to Aston Villa. The optimism garnered from Mike Jackson’s first four games in temporary charge evaporated at Turf Moor thanks to goals from Danny Ings, Emi Buendía and Ollie Watkins to leave the hosts looking over their shoulder with great concern. Jackson will face a challenge to lift his players after such a dispiriting loss. His only fit strikers have two goals between them in the Premier League this season and his first-choice centre-back pairing are injured going into their final three games. Football is an unfair playing field for smaller clubs but there is hope | Jason Stockwood

Money is the competitive advantage in football so a better flow of funding throughout the football pyramid is essential The “free market” is a dangerous lie. All systems are bounded by the choices we make on both a societal and individual basis. Seeing Fulham and Bournemouth promoted to the Premier League confirmed this idea and embeds the narrative that money is the competitive advantage in football. That they are beneficiaries of “parachute payments”, in a league where most clubs rely on the support of wealthy benefactors to underwrite their losses, further confirms that change is necessary if the game has any chance to retain any semblance of moral authority. There is, of course, no suggestion that Fulham or Bournemouth are corrupt or immoral. It’s the dangerous narrative of the “free market” that needs changing and the people to change it are not those currently in power as it is a narrative that serves the “elites” in both society and sport. Klopp’s men made to suffer by Kane-Son express | Barney Ronay

Tottenham’s twin spearheads underline their star quality to hand Manchester City the advantage over rivals Liverpool With 56 minutes gone, as the sky began to fade from powder blue to black, Emerson Royal pumped a hopeful pass into the empty air above the roof-lights, seeking out Harry Kane, who craned his neck, adjusting his feet, reading the arc. At that point the game seemed to fall apart a little. For almost an hour this had been a close, stifling game. Just before half-time Liverpool had applied one of those periods of surge-football, where they seem to be playing out of the same red mist, winning the ball back repeatedly, forcing the Spurs players to sweat and puff and turn a little dizzy. WSL season finale: Hayes relaxed as Chelsea bid to hold off Arsenal

Hayes pleased with Chelsea’s effort in transitional season ‘How many teams would have coped with that and be there?’ Emma Hayes said she is pleased Chelsea remained competitive this season despite having a squad in transition as she prepared for the Women’s Super League title to be decided on Sunday. “We’re in a healthy place,” said the manager, who will say goodbye to the long-serving Ji So-yun, Jonna Andersson and Drew Spence at the end of the campaign. “I think we had an ageing squad, we’ve had to try and address that balance and to compete while transitioning. That’s really tough. As a coach it’s why I’m pleased we’re in the position to compete, because that’s the hardest thing to do.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/may/06/chelsea-emma-hayes-wsl-season-finale-arsenal-jonas-eidevall

Norwich v West Ham: match preview

Two teams reeling from significant recent blows face off, with Dean Smith’s relegated Norwich now targeting nothing more than a bit of pride to take into another Championship season and, realistically, second bottom at best. They must do so without Kenny McLean and Josh Sargent, confirmed as out for the rest of the season. The suddenness of the wounds West Ham sustained in Thursday’s Europa League semi-final are arguably harder to recover from, and they arrive at Carrow Road on a run of five matches without a win. One point from their past four league games has left their hopes of another season of European football in the balance – those dreams of a Champions League place feel like they are from a long, long time ago. Leicester v Everton: match preview

Every game is of huge significance to Everton at the moment and a trip to a Leicester team reeling from a narrow defeat in Rome, where Brendan Rodgers’s side exited the Europa Conference League semi-finals late on Thursday, presents the latest opportunity to alter a concerning landscape. Leicester’s last win came at PSV Eindhoven seven games ago, while Everton are targeting successive victories for the first time since September. Rodgers will shuffle his pack but is desperate for the season not to fizzle out. Liverpool v Tottenham: match preview

Antonio Conte believes it suits his side to go “face-to-face” with an attacking team while Jürgen Klopp considers this “the biggest challenge for protection we have faced for a long time” due to Tottenham’s counter-attacking quality. It may prove a decisive weekend for both clubs’ Premier League aspirations but form favours the title contenders. Liverpool have lost only one of their past 18 league games against Spurs and have scored more goals in this campaign – 139 – than any in the club’s illustrious history. Mohamed Salah is in line to make his 250th appearance for the club. His previous 249 have yielded 155 goals. ‘Given a chance’: teenage Ukrainian football talents find hope in Poland

A top Warsaw academy is among the clubs who have offered safety and training to teenage boys with big ambitions “It’s heaviest of all for the boys,” says Irina as she watches her son, Denys, play one-twos with a new teammate on an artificial surface in Warsaw’s northern suburbs. “His father isn’t here, and his older brother joined the army. It’s just the two of us. The language barrier is hard for me, but I’m willing to go through all the difficulties. Everything we’re doing now” – she motions to a fellow Ukrainian mother, standing along the touchline – “is for the sake of our children’s future.” Denys is one of nine young Ukrainian footballers given a place to play by Turbo Academy, one of the most highly regarded setups in Poland. Most are 13 or 14; they held genuine hope of careers in the game before Russia invaded their country and, while safety was the primary consideration upon leaving, maintaining their prospects was a vital factor too. Chelsea v Wolves: match preview

Chelsea were stunned by Everton’s and Jordan Pickford’s heroics last time out and will be desperate to return to winning ways as both Arsenal and Tottenham still could overhaul them in the top-four race. Granted, for Spurs to have a realistic chance they will need to beat Liverpool on Saturday so Chelsea should be fine, but the wheels could still fall off with the sale of the club still in limbo. Fortunately their chances of staying third until the season’s end are boosted by facing Wolves. No goals in a run of three defeats suggests Bruno Lage’s side have somewhat checked out on the campaign and may be looking forward to a hard-earned rest. Thomas Tuchel will be in the mood to give them anything but. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Crunch time for Manchester City, Liverpool and Spurs, while Watford could be sent down For the second week in a row, Liverpool can get their work done before sitting back to see how Manchester City fare. The extent of any European bounce or, in City’s case, hangover may be hard to predict but Jürgen Klopp’s men have certainly built up fearsome head of steam to carry into the final four games. Like Liverpool, Spurs have a rival sitting just above them who, by and large, keep on winning: falling five points behind Arsenal this weekend could prove very costly going into Thursday’s north London derby and it adds to the sense that neither team can really afford anything but victory at Anfield. Spurs were not especially convincing in beating Leicester but, with an on-song Harry Kane and Son Heung-min kept fresh for the best part of a week, might fancy exposing any tired legs from that monumental comeback at Villarreal . Seasons are on the line for both sides, who would doubtless have prefe

Moyes sorry for kicking ball at ballboy during West Ham’s Europa League exit

West Ham manager shown red card for losing his cool ‘I kicked a ball back at the ballboy so I apologise for that’ David Moyes apologised for losing his cool after West Ham’s manager was sent off for lashing out at a ballboy as his side’s hopes of reaching the Europa League final were ended by Eintracht Frankfurt. Moyes, who was disappointed after West Ham fell to a 3-1 defeat on aggregate , admitted that he had no defence after he lost his cool with a time-wasting local. “I kicked a ball back at the ballboy so I apologise for that,” the Scot said. “He threw it very softly at me.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/may/05/moyes-sorry-for-kicking-ball-at-ballboy-during-west-hams-europa-league-exit

Rangers’ Van Bronckhorst eyes ‘another proud moment’ in Europa League final

Manager delighted with semi-final victory over RB Leipzig ‘The pressure will be different’ for final against Frankfurt Giovanni van Bronckhorst immediately set his sights on winning the Europa League after Rangers sealed a Seville final meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt by beating RB Leipzig on a famous evening at Ibrox. “We will prepare well and try to create another proud moment for this club,” said the Rangers manager. “We don’t have to do anything different in terms of preparation than we have done so far. Of course the pressure will be different for a final but we still have to play to our strengths. Finals are always nice if you win them and that’s what we want to do. David Moyes has taken West Ham far but failure to adapt cost them | Jonathan Liew

Ride to Europa League semi-finals has been a joy for fans but club must now decide if it wants more or just treads water The clock was ticking. Eintracht Frankfurt, two goals up on aggregate, looked comfortable but not impregnable. And even with 10 men, West Ham were enjoying plenty of possession and had four substitutes left to deploy. And so, with a European final at stake and the climax approaching, the world eagerly awaited David Moyes’s next move. As it turned out, Moyes’s next move was to attack a ball boy and get himself sent off. So close. The margins in this game, and all that. And although this tie was probably already gone by the time he was slinking down the tunnel, the angry veins in his temples finally receding, the departure of the West Ham manager felt like a bizarrely fitting epilogue to this semi-final, one that began in east London in a bouquet of bubbles and euphoria, and ended on the banks of the River Main in ignominy and anticlimax. Klopp hails ‘mentality monsters’ as Mo Salah says he wants Real Madrid in final

Liverpool manager says third final as special as the first Salah: ‘I want to play Real Madrid, I have to be honest’ Jürgen Klopp said reaching a third Champions League final in five seasons with Liverpool felt as good as the first one after his team recovered from a punishing first half to beat Villarreal on a pulsating night in eastern Spain. Liverpool conceded twice before the interval for a 2-2 aggregate scoreline, the stadium rocking as Villarreal advertised a stunning comeback. But inspired by the half-time introduction of Luis Díaz, Liverpool regained their poise to win 3-2 on the night and 5-2 overall.
