Steve Bruce: I can’t wait to get started with Sheffield Wednesday

• Bruce sets sights on Premier League return for club • Manager says there is no budget for signings Steve Bruce is back where he started in management but on the opposite side of the city’s divide, claiming his formative years at Sheffield United were too long ago to affect his new job with Wednesday. “That was my first managerial job and this might be my last,” the former Sunderland and Birmingham manager said of his 10th club since retiring from playing. “Physically and emotionally I feel great. The club wanted me to start right away [a month ago, when the appointment was announced] but I explained the issues I had to the chairman and he understood.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jan/31/steve-bruce-sheffield-wednesday-get-started

Maurizio Sarri’s love of hogging the ball without guile has to change – fast | Dominic Fifield

Chelsea need an injection of pace, width, even aggression, anything to make boom-and-bust team less predictable The clamour around Chelsea is for change. If not, within the club at least, in terms of the management. There are no first-team delegations primed with complaints and queuing up outside Marina Granovskaia’s office just yet. While it is never wise to pre-suppose Roman Abramovich’s mood, the hierarchy are less inclined these days to fire a manager who has barely had time to reinstate ketchup on the menu at the training ground canteen. The Paraguay international who spirited Atlanta United to an MLS Cup is bound for the Premier League, where he will be the creative playmaker Rafael Benítez has long coveted As the transfer window was closing on Thursday, Newcastle United secured the signature of Miguel Almirón , acquiring the Atlanta United star for a reported £21.5m ($28m) . Newcastle break club transfer record to sign Miguel Almirón from Atlanta

• Paraguayan player joins for record fee in region of £21m • ‘It’s a great responsibility, something beautiful for me’ Miguel Almirón has become the most expensive signing of the Mike Ashley era at Newcastle United, with his £21m move from Atlanta United finally eclipsing the record £16.8m transfer fee the north east club paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen in August 2005. Ashley’s near 12 years as owner have been characterised by budget buys but, perhaps motivated by real fears that Rafael Benítez could be on the point of quitting as Newcastle’s manager, the retail tycoon belatedly sanctioned a long-mooted deal for the Paraguay playmaker. Callum Hudson-Odoi’s transfer bid signals a growing European trend | Eni Aluko

Chelsea want to keep the forward despite his request to join Bayern, but why not let a talented player develop in Europe? Callum Hudson-Odoi’s decision to lodge a transfer request this week after Bayern Munich’s £35m bid is a sign of changing times and a growing trend for young players at big Premier League clubs. Hudson-Odoi is trying to follow the path that has taken a lot of young English players abroad in recent years thanks to the success of Jadon Sancho at Borussia Dortmund and club partnerships with European sister clubs. Three or four years ago it would have been rare for a young player at a top Premier League club to request a transfer to go to one of Europe’s biggest clubs. It’s interesting to see a young player at Chelsea now saying: “I want to go” – not just on loan, but abroad permanently. Josh King shines in Bournemouth’s stunning demolition of Chelsea

All it took to erode all the positivity whipped up by domestic cup successes was a trip to the south coast. Chelsea were humiliated by an excellent Bournemouth here, their defence lacerated and exposed by the pace and incision of their hosts’ counterattacks. Maurizio Sarri had already delivered a damning public condemnation of his players’ inadequacies after a loss at Arsenal earlier in the month yet this, in so many ways, was a display even more insipid. Their lead from fifth place, which recently gaped at six points, has been whittled away, but the deficiencies in Chelsea’s game had always endangered that pursuit of the top four. Sarri’s team are three points and five goals worse off than Antonio Conte’s were at the same stage last year, and were beaten by the time Junior Stanislas skipped down the right and crossed for Josh King to ease a splendid finish into the top corner 15 minutes from time. It was an excellent goal to confirm Bournemouth’s first win over a top-six side this te

Transfer roundup: Everton told they must pay £35m to sign Michy Batshauyi

• Club in talks with Chelsea over permanent deal • Youri Tielemans set to join Leicester on loan Everton are attempting to sign Michy Batshuayi on a permanent deal from Chelsea, with the Belgium striker expected to cost around £35m. Batshuayi spent the first half of this season on loan at Valencia but has not made an appearance at the beginning of the month as the Spanish side attempt to cut short his spell. Despite interest from West Ham in taking him on loan, Chelsea have been searching for a permanent option for the 25-year-old and have held talks with Everton over a potential move, with the Londoners demanding more than the £33m they paid to sign him from Marseille in 2016. Pochettino needed a trophy for Spurs this year as top-four battle gets tighter | Paul Wilson

The Tottenham manager has his reasons for disdaining cups but winning silverware is a habit his team need to develop – no one takes photos of a fourth-placed finish Perhaps the kindest thing to say about Mauricio Pochettino’s honesty in excusing Tottenham’s removal from two cups in four days is that he cannot be accused of self-interest or personal promotion. If it is true, and it seems widely accepted, that the Spurs manager’s name is on some very short lists for consideration at some of the most select clubs around Europe, there will be people at those clubs pointing out that for all his personable promise Pochettino has won precisely nothing yet, and furthermore his team have regained a reputation for choking when the important tests come along. Football transfer rumours: Idrissa Gueye off to Manchester City now?

Today’s fluff still can’t hear you The moment on Tuesday when Fernandinho dawdled in his own box at St James’s Park like a lost tourist checking a map was the prelude to raucous celebrations not only in Newcastle but also in Liverpool, including, perhaps, the home of Idrissa Gueye. Because that moment may have reminded Manchester City that they could do with another holding midfielder sooner rather than later and thus intensified their interest in the Senegalese player. The good news for Everton is that interest could drive up Gueye’s price, prompting a bidding war between City and Paris Saint-Germain before Thursday’s deadline. Arsenal are also interested but their offer of a loan deal plus a photo with Gunnersaurus is not considered to be a genuine contribution to said war, more like a request for a slap. Aleksandar Mitrovic at the double as Fulham fightback stuns Brighton

For a team sucked deep into the frozen depths of relegation, what could warm the cockles more than a rousing comeback? At half time, trailing 2-0 as the sleet turned to snow and Claudio Ranieri looked on grimly from beneath the hood of his coat. Fulham were the embodiment of the adage that attack is the best form of defence – which is just as well really, to breathe new life into the challenge of Premier League survival. This was the latest in a series of must-win games for Ranieri’s men – the kind of series observers from this corner of SW6 must watch anxiously through their fingers with a gnawing sense of dread in their gut. Neither team arrived at this bitterly cold rendezvous by the Thames in especially fine fettle, but Brighton sensed an opportunity too good to waste. Richarlison’s early strike gives 10-man Everton win at Huddersfield

Anyone looking for signs of a an Everton revival would be well advised to wait until less accommodating opponents are encountered. For Marco Silva’s stuttering side a fixture against the team propping up the table came along at the idea time. A new face in the dugout made little or no difference to Huddersfield’s fortunes on the pitch, they gifted Everton an early goal and were unable to take advantage when their visitors went down to 10 men for almost half an hour. To be kind to the relegation strugglers they were worth at least a point and might have had one but for some excellent second half goalkeeping by Jordan Pickford, particularly when keeping out a header from Elias Kachunga 10 minutes from time. To be kind to their visitors they managed to see the game out after Lucas Digne’s dismissal, but this win was far from the confidence booster it could have been. Though Richarlison added to his goal tally it was just about all he managed successfully all evening. Continue reading...

Pochettino raised eyebrows with his comments following the 2-0 loss at Selhurst Park on Sunday, when Tottenham gave up a second opportunity to win a domestic trophy inside four days having also lost to Chelsea in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. “We are going to create a debate that to win a trophy is going to help the club, I don’t agree with that,” he said before making his curious remark regarding egos. Speaking before Wednesday’s Premier League match with Watford, Pochettino appreciated that his words may have caused confusion, as well as

FA investigating allegations of homophobic chanting at Sol Campbell

• Abuse alleged to have taken place on Saturday • Supporters tell of hearing ‘disgusting’ chants The Football Association has launched an investigation into claims that Sol Campbell was subjected to “horrendous” homophobic abuse during Macclesfield Town’s visit to Cheltenham on Saturday. It comes after several Cheltenham Town fans wrote about chants directed towards the Silkmen’s manager on social media after the match, which the home side won 3-2. One supporter tweeted that “the homophobic chants and references towards Sol Campbell were disgusting. Disappointed that the stewards didn’t seem to do anything”. Another said: “It was horrendous. And not for the first time this season. Cheltenham need to nip it before it happens again.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jan/29/football-association-investigating-allegations-homophobic-chanting-sol-campbell

Italian football coach banned for butting rival at end of Serie C match – video

Serie C coach Giancarlo Favarin has been given a five-month ban for violently butting a member of the opposing team’s staff and telling a player to break an opponent’s legs. Footage of the incident showed the coach of Lucchese butting Gaetano Mancino, assistant coach of rivals Alessandria, during a brawl in injury-time during a 2-2 draw between their teams on Sunday. Serie C’s disciplinary tribunal said in a statement that Favarin made ‘blasphemous remarks’ during the match and ‘invited his own player to break the legs of an opponent’. Football transfer rumours: Ivan Rakitic to Chelsea or Arsenal?

Today’s fluff sat on a fence but it don’t work Chelsea are preparing a summer swoop for Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic , reports the Spanish paper Sport . Barcelona, having agreed the transfer of Frenkie de Jong and with Adrien Rabiot likely to follow, have a glut of midfielders and not all of them can stay. Rakitic, subject of “a colossal offer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer”, is braced for fresh bids – and they are likely to come from England. “Apart from Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have the player in their sights for June,” Sport report. “They want to know the availability of the player and will wait until the January window closes to test the water.” The Croatian apparently intends to concentrate on his football for the remainder of the season, before deciding his next step. “Barça are clear,” Sport concludes, “that there will be very juicy exit options for the player.” One thing Chelsea will not be doing any time soon is selling Callum Hudson-Odoi, who will now stay

Thierry Henry only has himself to blame for his failure at Monaco

Henry inherited a depleted squad but his negative tactics and immature man-management did not help his case By Adam White and Eric Devin for Get French Football News Appointing Thierry Henry as manager was always going to be a gamble for Monaco, but there was little to suggest his time in charge would end in such spectacular failure. Henry’s return to his boyhood club was an unmitigated disaster. Henry did oversee the odd decent result – including recent draws with Marseille and Nice in the league and progress to the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue – but ultimately he paid the price for performances on the pitch and his own seeming contradictions. The sheer number of injuries at the club did not work in his favour. More than a dozen first-team players were unavailable at various times, most notably Rony Lopes, who scored an incredible 14 goals in the second half of last season. However, even with the board’s backing – Monaco signed Naldo , Cesc Fàbregas and Fodé Ballo-Touré

Montilivi, not Miami, hosts Girona v Barcelona as Tebas loses his bet | Sid Lowe

It was Montilivi that watched it, that lived it, and that would have loved a different ending. Montilivi that deserved it, too “Welcome to Miami,” the sign said . Scribbled in black pen on white cardboard and fixed to the fence by the stadium where long lines of tables were laid out and the atmosphere was building, it greeted them as they arrived – football fans heading to the biggest game of the year. Mostly, they strolled from town, through narrow, old streets, yellow ribbons attached to every lamppost, along the river where the houses overlooking the water are brightly coloured, not pastel, across the bridge and up a gentle hill in the sunshine. There, past concrete police controls was another sign, bigger and more professionally produced, yellow letters on a red backdrop covering the stand. “One team, one fanbase, one city,” it declared. And that team, those fans, that city, was Girona. Not Miami. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/foo

US soccer's Gregg Berhalter era starts with a win and the echo of empty seats

The new US men’s national team coach fielded a young team in his first game in charge but the real work will start in the coming months For his first match in charge of the US men’s national team, Gregg Berhalter named Aaron Long as captain in only his third international appearance. The obvious choice, Michael Bradley, had more caps than the rest of the squad put together. If handing the armband to Long was an attempt to accelerate the defender’s development, it also felt like a symbolic break with the past – even as Bradley was out on the field performing well in a midfield holding role as the US eased past Panama, 3-0, in a friendly on Sunday in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, Arizona. Schalke’s fresh Bundesliga start stymied after bruising trip to Berlin | Andy Brassell

Even when things are going well with Schalke, you’re only ever half-a-mile away from getting a puncture Sometimes you start out with the idea of a refreshing weekend away in Berlin – and end up tired and nursing a headache. Schalke may have arrived in the capital for Friday’s weekend opener with Hertha full of “new dynamism and new self-confidence”, according to their coach Domenico Tedesco beforehand, but their aim of snaring a third successive Bundesliga win didn’t go to plan. Not only that, but the hangover will be felt for most of this week, and perhaps beyond. Tedesco could have few complaints over his side’s efforts, which backed his assessment of an upturn towards the output of his debut season. His newly-attacking Schalke led twice in a busy first half via a super effort from range by Yevhen Konoplyanka – restored to the line-up for the banned Weston McKennie – and one from Mark Uth, but were pegged back twice, with Vedad Ibisevic’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time ultima

FA Cup fourth round: 10 talking points from the weekend action

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is proving his tactical ability every week but Accrington’s manager could not see the magic of his Cup tie It was a pity John Coleman saw fit to savage Jon Moss, stealing the headlines when his players’ tremendous performance against Derby deserved more attention. The referee did not get everything right but the Accrington manager was wrong to describe his decisions as horrendous, particularly as his supposedly worst call only led to the corner that resulted in the goal. Frank Lampard was on safer ground talking of the magic of the FA Cup. “We had 2,500 fans here and I thought it was great, it felt like a proper game,” the Derby manager said. “I’ve played in Cup ties like that for Chelsea, we won 1-0 at Scarborough a few years back and by no means were we the much better team. Football must go in hard on Bahrain over the Hakeem al-Araibi affair | Sean Ingle

It is time for Fifa and the IOC to threaten serious sporting sanctions if the Bahraini footballer detained in Thailand and facing extradition is not set free There is a striking story in The Club, Jonathan Clegg and Joshua Robinson’s new book on how the Premier League went global, that illustrates football’s inimitable ability to tickle the erogenous zones of the powerful. It turns out that when British prime ministers want to make deals, their secret weapon is the Premier League trophy. As the league’s former CEO Richard Scudamore explains: “Everyone who sees it will say, ‘Wow’. Heads of state, prime ministers – they all want a photo with the trophy. It’s what we like to call soft power.” But sometimes soft power is not enough. The velvet boot needs iron studs. Barcelona win Catalan derby against Girona Goals galore in Serie A as Fiorentina and Roma are held Lionel Messi scored for a sixth consecutive La Liga game as champions Barcelona saw off a gutsy Girona side 2-0 in a Catalan derby on Sunday to go five points clear at the top of the standings. Nelson Semedo struck with his weaker left foot to send Barca into the lead in the ninth minute, which was played on a rain-swept afternoon at Girona’s Montilivi stadium after LaLiga’s ambitious plan to stage the game in Miami fell through. Connor Wickham ends long wait as Crystal Palace knock out Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur, a side wearing the scars of a World Cup as well as a draining domestic campaign, have staggered out of their second major cup competition inside four days. This felt a rather meek surrender compared to the Carabao Cup elimination at Chelsea last week, a team whose resources appear to have been stretched to breaking point by injuries succumbing to a Crystal Palace unused to such comfortable occasions on home territory. Palace had claimed this scalp en route to the final back in 2016 but, while even Roy Hodgson may dare to dream in the aftermath of this success, it was Spurs’ inadequacies which really caught the eye. Without Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Dele Alli, they looked blunt in attack, and leggy in midfield. Too many players are showing the strain. Mauricio Pochettino could only offer a resigned puff of the cheeks at the final whistle before he trudged off down the touchline, hands buried deep in his pockets. Spurs have joined West Ham and Everton in seeing th

‘I missed my brother’s wedding’: the Barnet fan who has seen 2,020 straight games

Steve Percy, who has seen every Barnet home match for over 50 years, on the highs, lows and facing Brentford in the FA Cup It was October 12, 1968 and Steve Percy was on Wood Green High Street. This wasn’t unusual in itself. North London born-and-bred, Percy would often go there with his family. The problem was with the timing. It was a Saturday afternoon and, while Percy was shopping, Barnet were playing at home. “For some reason we were in Wood Green and before we knew it, it was about half past three,” says Percy, recollecting the experience of his 13-year-old self. “I thought: ‘Oh God, I’m not going to get to Barnet now.’ I made it home round about the time the game would have finished and managed to find the result. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, it was a 5-1 win against Worcester City.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jan/27/barnet-fan-not-missed-home-game-50-years-steve-percy

Bedlam. The only word to describe the scenes here as, three minutes into stoppage time, Murray Wallace sent a low shot into the back of Everton’s net, sealing a shock victory for Millwall and one that will be spoken about in these parts for some time to come. Matthew Dolan stuns Middlesbrough with late strike to earn Newport replay

Hamstring trouble dictated that Mathhew Dolan had been touch and go for a place on the bench against the club where he started his career, but who ultimately told him he was not good enough for them. Such rejection ensured the Newport County midfielder was particularly keen to pass a fitness test and, having done so, he made the absolute most of his late introduction. The tie was into stoppage time when Dolan jogged a few Teesside memories by extending his left foot to stab Josh Sheehan’s cross beyond Darren Randolph from close range and wreck Tony Pulis’s evening. A pulsating tie had entered the 92nd minute when Sam Ricketts convulsed in despair on the sideline. Nuno Espirito Santo was reprieved. Shrewsbury, 18th in League One, led by two goals against the Premier League visitors with 15 minutes remaining. Greg Docherty, the 22-year-old on loan from Glasgow Rangers, had given Ricketts’ side the advantage with a superb finish before Luke Waterfall headed them into dreamland. They finished in despair instead thanks to Raúl Jiménez and Doherty’s header for a Wolves team showing six changes from last weekend’s win over Leicester City. Simple tweak to Lukaku's role keeps charmed prince Solskjær's reign alive | Jonathan Wilson

Playing Romelu Lukaku on the right wing meant Ole Gunnar Solskjær created the space to get the most out of Alexis Sánchez in the win over Arsenal Easy game, this management lark. So easy, you wonder what on earth Ole Gunnar Solskjær was doing during his first stint in the Premier League: it didn’t seem this straightforward with Cardiff City. These days, though, it seems he can do no wrong. Not only did he allow Alexis Sánchez to invoke the immutable law of the ex by scoring against Arsenal but, far less expectedly, he deployed Romelu Lukaku to dismantle Arsenal from a position on the right wing. Arsenal fear Laurent Koscielny has broken jaw in Manchester United defeat

• Fellow centre-half Sokratis also went off with leg injury • Defenders Hector Bellerín and Rob Holding out for season Unai Emery lamented Arsenal’s worsening defensive injury crisis as Laurent Koscielny suffered a suspected broken jaw during their 3-1 defeat at the hands of a vibrant Manchester United. “Koscielny is going to hospital for analysis, maybe a break,” Emery said with an expression that suggested he feared the worst. This comes a week after Héctor Bellerín joined Rob Holding in being out for the season and beyond after suffering a cruciate ligament injury. Arsenal lost both centre-halves during the game as Sokratis Papastathopoulos jarred his leg, but Emery sounded more optimistic that the problem is not long-term. Manchester United see off Arsenal to maintain manager’s perfect start

By now, it has become a familiar sight: Ole Gunnar Solskjær hugging his staff, eyes twinkling, applauding his players and celebrating the return of Manchester United, as we used to know them. Quick, incisive football, willing to take on anyone and, more often that not, coming out on top. Solskjær has even taken to chewing gum, Ferguson-style, with the wrappers scattered round his feet, and at this rate the only possible regret for his club is that they did not tire of José Mourinho earlier. This was their eighth straight win since Solskjær was handed the role on a caretaker basis and the case for him taking the job full time is building all the time, particularly now his restorative qualities even appear to stretch to Alexis Sánchez, who scored the opening goal on his return to his former club. Jesse Lingard put in United’s second goal soon afterwards but perhaps the most impressive part of United’s performance was the way they withheld some fierce pressure from an Arsenal side that l
