Fikayo Tomori and Ollie Watkins called into England squad by Gareth Southgate

Aaron Ramsdale also included for World Cup qualifiers Jude Bellingham left out to manage his workload The Milan central defender Fikayo Tomori and the Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins have been included by Gareth Southgate in England’s squad to face Andorra and Hungary in World Cup qualifiers. Tomori has been rewarded for his club form in the absence of the injured Harry Maguire and, in a surprise twist, there is no place for Arsenal’s Ben White. Joe Gomez, Ben Chilwell and the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold are also missing from the defensive ranks but Reece James is included despite recently sustaining an injury with Chelsea. Southgate said his understanding was that James had a chance of returning on Saturday against Southampton. Fifa rape inquiry into former Haitian FA director unresolved 13 months on

Wilner Etienne denies wrongdoing and says claim is a ‘pure lie’ Fifa investigations continue into other Haiti officials A Fifa investigation into a former technical director of the Haitian Football Federation accused of raping several female players under the age of 18 remains unresolved more than a year after he was suspended. Wilner Etienne was provisionally suspended for 90 days by Fifa’s ethics committee last August as part of its investigation into allegations of sexual abuse by the then FHF president, Yves Jean-Bart, and other officials. Jean-Bart was banned for life after being found guilty of abusing his position and having sexually harassed and abused female players, including minors. Nela Joseph – a former supervisor of Haiti’s under-20 women’s team – received a 10-year ban in May for “actively coercing” players into having sex with Jean-Bart . Liverpool v Manchester City could be decided by what happens off the ball | Karen Carney

Pressing, and how effectively the sides counteract it, will play a big part at the end of a particularly tough week for City’s players There is a very easy way to make good players look like world beaters: give them time and space. Liverpool and Manchester City are piled high with quality that can rip apart any opposition if allowed to play on their own terms, so it will be important for both sides to execute a perfect pressing game when they meet at Anfield on Sunday. The match could be won by the work done off the ball. City showed how to do this against Chelsea, and Liverpool will be very careful not to fall into similar traps. City had 62% possession but their pressing efficiency was 10% greater than Chelsea’s. City disrupted their opponents’ plan to play out from the back thanks to the relentless nature of their attackers – something they will look to repeat at Anfield. Ronaldo only needs 'one chance' says Solskjær after late Manchester United winner – video

Ole Gunnar Solskjær hailed a 'massive moment' for Manchester United after Cristiano Ronaldo’s 95th-minute strike snatched a win against Villarreal and eased the pressure on the manager following a run of three defeats in four matches. Ronaldo was making a record-breaking 178th appearance in the competition and - in fitting style - grabbed a late winner for his side. Championship roundup: Rooney backs Derby to stay up after Reading win

Rams now on one point following 12-point deduction Forest beat Barnsley, Mitrovic hits hat-trick for Fulham Wayne Rooney believes Derby will stay up despite their 12-point deduction following a 1-0 home win over Reading . The Rams closed the gap to a position of safety in the Championship to seven points following Craig Forsyth’s first-half header - his first goal in more than five years. Ronaldo’s winner fuels Solskjær myth but success seems as far away as ever | Jonathan Wilson

Manchester United’s Champions League win against Villarreal was ill-deserved – the team are too open and will be punished for it How much time does love buy you? That Manchester United fans want Ole Gunnar Solskjær to succeed is understandable. It’s not just that he scored vital goals, it’s that he embodied a golden age. Who would not want a returning hero to restore the club to glory? But wishful thinking will not organise a midfield. The win will part the clouds a little. Solskjær has survived another mini-crisis, but each one leaves him slightly weaker. And this one comes with Cristiano Ronaldo. It may not be fair, given Ronaldo is 36 and, for all his goalscoring ability, increasingly an anachronism, but his signing has increased the pressure on the manager. Crisis on Brian Clough Way: how rivals Derby and Forest are united in pain

East Midlands clubs occupy Championship’s bottom two spots, though Derby’s problems are more severe on and off the pitch It was a scene Derby County supporters had been dreading, one that made everything depressingly real. The setting – the club’s Moor Farm training base – and backdrop – an advertising board filled with a myriad of sponsors – were familiar, only in the foreground it was not Wayne Rooney talking team news but administrators telling how they plan to dig Derby out of the mud. Less than 24 hours after the club had plunged to the bottom of the Championship , Andrew Hosking and Carl Jackson, insolvency specialists in suits and ties, shuffled into position and delivered a cautiously optimistic opening gambit. Derby are clinging to such hope amid the disconcerting headline numbers, minus points and debts north of £60m. It was 10-10 in an extraordinary shootout at the end of the Europa League meeting with Manchester United in May, the first final Villarreal had played, this team from the town of just 50,577 , and history was calling him. So was the referee. “I was walking away when he said: ‘Goalie, your turn,’” Rulli recalls. “‘Me? Roger Hunt obituary

One of Liverpool’s greatest strikers who played a key role in England’s 1966 World Cup victory The footballer Roger Hunt, who has died aged 83, was a key member of the England team that won the World Cup in 1966, appearing in all six games in the finals and scoring three goals in the process. He was also one of Liverpool’s all-time greats, winning two First Division titles and an FA Cup at Anfield in the early 1960s and becoming the club’s highest league scorer – a position he retained, with only Ian Rush surpassing him in all competitions. However, for all his feats Hunt was occasionally a target for criticism from the footballing public, not least because in 1966 he had inadvertently taken on the role of the man who kept Jimmy Greaves out of the World Cup final. Roger Hunt, a member of England’s 1966 World Cup team and winner of two First Division titles with Liverpool, has died at the age of 83. Hunt, who won 34 caps, played in all six matches at the 1966 finals and scored three goals. Klopp’s team have scored nine goals on their last two visits to the Portuguese club and their 5-0 win in 2018 remains Porto’s heaviest home defeat in European competition. Liverpool, who have never lost in eight meetings with Porto, recorded another emphatic away victory in the quarter-finals the following season, winning 4-1 en route to lifting the trophy for a sixth time. ‘It’s how you handle the pain’: Pep Guardiola prepares City players for PSG

Lionel Messi expected to start on the bench Manchester City beat PSG twice last season Pep Guardiola has said his Manchester City players need to brace themselves for “pain” and having to “suffer” when they face Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League encounter on Tuesday night. City are in the French capital for their second Group A fixture and will come up against what is arguably football’s most formidable attacking trident. Guardiola says he is not entirely sure how any team, including City, can stop Kylian Mbappé, Neymar and Lionel Messi if they are in the mood. “We have to be compact, help each other and know we’re going to suffer and have pain,” said City’s manager. “It’s how you handle the pain;. They’re so good, these type of teams, you have to be able to suffer for 90 minutes.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/sep/27/its-how-you-handle-the-pain-pep-guardiola-prepares-manchester-city-psg-champions-league

Barcelona rediscover Ansu Fati – and hope – when they most need to | Sid Lowe

The club needed some light and the 18-year-old’s goal 323 days after suffering a knee injury provided plenty of it Hope appeared on a Sunday afternoon, light let in at last. Just that smile would have been enough, the look of this kid stepping back on to the pitch 323 days later, taking it all in like it was the first time; the look of every kid everywhere stepping into a football stadium for the first time, overwhelmed yet inspired, at once tiny and huge. Ansu Fati though doesn’t do enough and doesn’t do waiting, so there was more. The youngest player ever to score for Barcelona and for Spain, the boy who found the net 111 seconds into his first Camp Nou start , finally headed back out there on the day he said was like a debut and by the time he came off again he had another goal. Football clubs need to remember that they are playing with people’s lives | Josh Gowling

Administration can strike at the very heart of a community, no matter what level of football it involves When your club are on the edge of an abyss, it can shape your attitude towards football. In 2008, I was playing for Bournemouth when we started to hear things weren’t right. Our wages were being paid late and rumours began flying around the place. We had a meeting with the hierarchy and our fears were confirmed: we were going into administration. I was 24 and had just taken out a mortgage for the first time. I had to borrow money to keep up with payments, while many of my teammates had mouths to feed at home. It was a turbulent period: we had 10 points deducted and even though our squad pulled together and fought to the last we were relegated to League Two. The club was so close to going under. The Fiver | Crystal Palace v Brighton: arguably the Premier League’s weirdest rivalry

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! One of those long-running feuds that goes back so long that few (least of all the warring factions so heavily invested in it) can quite remember what prompted it in the first place, Crystal Palace and Brighton resume hostilities on Monday night in what is arguably the Premier League’s weirdest derby. A quick recap : having endured a somewhat pr1ckly relationship during their playing days at Tottenham, Terry Venables and Alan Mullery were appointed managers of third division clubs Palace and Brighton respectively, within a month of each other in 1976. The sides would go on to meet five times that season, tensions simmering on each occasion before reaching – quite literally – boiling point after the fourth encounter when a Palace fan threw a cup of coffee over Mullery. Women’s Super League: talking points from the weekend’s action

Are Manchester United being left behind? Eidevall’s plans pay off for Arsenal while Brighton’s brief tenure at the top is over Manchester United’s 6-1 home defeat to Chelsea was a stark reminder that there is no scope to coast for clubs in the Women’s Super League. United landed on the scene with big promises and big ambitions in 2018, they launched with a statement and no-nonsense manager in Casey Stoney and last year recruited the services of US forwards Christen Press and Tobin Heath to aid the team’s bid to break the stranglehold of Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal. Stoney is gone, frustrated by United talking the talk more than they walked the walk when it came to facilities and support, Heath and Press have left without like-for-like quality or numbers replacing them, and, ultimately, United have stood still. Victories over Reading and Leicester under new manager Marc Skinner masked the cracks that Chelsea blew apart and with teams around United having upped their investmen

Gladbach get Hütter up and running as Rose suffers on return | Andy Brassell

Marco Rose returned to Borussia Mönchengladbach with Dortmund on Saturday but it was his replacement at Borussia-Park who was victorious The biggest reaction in Borussia-Park arrived at exactly the moment it was expected. As Marco Rose came out to take his place on the bench – arriving fashionably late, no doubt – there was no sneaking into position without Borussia Mönchengladbach’s fans giving him a hot reception. The faithful of the Nordkurve, at least, had certainly not forgotten the slow and painful end to last season after Rose’s impending departure for Borussia Dortmund was announced, the day after Valentine’s Day. The bad news for the returning coach was that wasn’t the noisiest the 25,000 gathered on Saturday night got. After a far-from-impeccable start to life under new coach Adi Hütter, the Gladbach tail wagged hard here, pushing miserable away defeats at Leverkusen, Union Berlin and Augsburg to the back of the mind with a display of graft and grit. It felt sweet. A member

The Sarri era finally takes flight as Lazio seize moment for derby delight | Nicky Bandini

Maurizio Sarri has made a slower start to life in Rome than Mourinho but his team’s fast start left Roma unable to catch up Maurizio Sarri looked at the eagle perched on his wrist and started to laugh. Olimpia, Lazio’s club mascot of the past 11 years, is quite a presence up close: a 12kg bird of prey with a two-and-a-half-metre wingspan. He realised quickly that one arm wasn’t going to manage it, bringing across the other one to support her weight and glancing up toward the Curva. Thousands of fans were packed in there, lost in delirious celebration. OK, so maybe the Rome derby was a bigger deal than Sangiovannese v Montevarchi after all. Lens win in Marseille and set their sights on European football

Lens missed out on the Europa Conference League by a single point last season. They want to put that right this campaign By Eric Devin for Get French Football News It’s no wonder Marseille feature so often in the Sunday evening slot in Ligue 1. Big derbies – such as the clash between Lyon and Saint-Étienne next week – are also chosen for the glamour match of the weekend, but the atmosphere at the Vélodrome has been electric this season and their match against Lens this weekend was no exception. Lens are hardly box office but, after a strong start to the season, they went into the game knowing that a victory would take them above the hosts and into second place in the table. They succeeded, winning a scintillating game 3-2 to show that they might have enough about them to finish in the top six this season. Super League still poses ‘existential threat’ to football’s future, Uefa warns

Clubs’ court action challenging structure of game continues Uefa sends warning note to all of Europe’s national FAs The European Super League still represents “an ongoing existential threat to the foundations and future of European football”, Uefa has warned, as an aggressive court action originally brought by all 12 breakaway clubs continues to challenge its structure. Although nine of the original 12 clubs, including the six from the Premier League, rapidly stated they had withdrawn from the project after the vilification that met its launch on 18 April, they are all still members of the Super League company that is maintaining the legal challenge. The action in a Madrid court was taken against Uefa by the 12 clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, on the day they announced their widely derided plan for a breakaway competition with themselves as permanent members, after months of secret discussions and planning. Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Partey makes Arsenal tick, Klopp cost Liverpool, and have Spurs seen the best of Kane? With 34 minutes gone , Harry Kane tripped over the ball and tanked back after it, catching up with play just in time to feed Bukayo Saka for Arsenal’s third goal, thereby enshrining one of the great derby humiliations. This was nothing more than Kane deserved because while there’s something wrong about someone being forced to work somewhere against their will, it was he who signed a six-year contract with no release clause, and he who mistakenly thought an act of impotent petulance would faze the game’s most stubborn nihilist. Consequently it was hard not to enjoy the karma police catching up with him. Doubtless he’ll rebound from the disappointment – he’s too good not to – but he was once able to refocus games of this ilk to become all about him, a quality that might just have escaped him for good. Spurs may come to regret keeping him as much as he already regrets staying with them. Daniel Harris

Tottenham’s Nuno admits he picked wrong side in defeat by Arsenal

Arsenal score three first-half goals in north London derby Nuno Espírito Santo: ‘We were not aggressive enough’ Nuno Espírito Santo admitted he got his starting personnel all wrong during a chastening 3-1 derby defeat at Arsenal. The Tottenham manager began with Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele as the No 8s in a 4-3-3 and his team were overrun in the first half. Arsenal led 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Emile Smith Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka and, although Spurs stabilised and pulled one back late on through Son Heung-min, it did little to placate Nuno. Masterful Granit Xhaka the living embodiment of Arsenal’s dream derby

Eyebrows were raised when the sometimes-combustible Swiss was picked but in the end everything ran through him As Tottenham’s defenders glared at each other in reproach for a third time, a beaming Thierry Henry extended his arms in celebration. Enjoying the spectacle with Henry in one of the Emirates’ executive boxes was Daniel Ek, the Spotify co-owner and high-profile suitor for the keys to one of English football’s grandest old estates. They were revelling in an evisceration: for 45 minutes Arsenal produced football of speed, imagination and incision that recalled some of Henry’s happiest derby experiences. ‘Some things are more important than football’: Football Fern Rebekah Stott on her cancer journey

She had some tests, but the results were inconclusive. Keep an eye on it, the doctor told her. So off she flew to England. By the end of August, the lump had grown. It was large enough that she could feel it when she moved. Struggling neighbours offer Spurs a grim warning of their own mediocre future | Jonathan Wilson

Tottenham play mid-table football in a shiny new stadium and fail to bridge the gulf to the rich elite – just like their derby rivals The phantom slowly, gravely, silently approached Spurs. It was shrouded in a deep black garment, which concealed its head, its face, its form, and left nothing visible save one outstretched hand. It pointed to the south-west and in that moment Spurs understood. Spurs looked at Arsenal and saw not a rival but their own future. Could it be that Arsenal are a vision of Tottenham yet to come? This is a tale of Daniel Levy, of course, and of Mauricio Pochettino and Harry Kane and dozens of others, but it is also about the broader sweep of history. Football, as we know it today, may have been born in London with the formulation of the Football Association at the Freemasons Arms near Covent Garden in 1863 and the codification of the laws that still form the basis of the modern game, but after professionalisation it quickly left. Liverpool held to thrilling draw at Brentford after Wissa grabs his chance

At the final whistle, Jürgen Klopp could not stop shaking his head in disbelief. Somehow his Liverpool side had contrived to throw away victory against a Brentford side that simply never stopped believing. While Klopp can console himself with the fact that his side are a point clear at the top after Mohamed Salah scored his 100th Premier League goal, he will know they must improve considerably if they are to go all the way again this season as their defensive weaknesses were exposed time and again. A spirited performance from Brentford that sparked into life with Ethan Pinnock’s opener and was rounded off by Yoane Wissa’s equaliser eight minutes from time could have been even worse for Liverpool had it not been for a last-ditch tackle from Virgil van Dijk, even if a draw was probably the fair result from a pulsating game. Manchester City were still deep in the boiler room, seeing out a 1-0 lead in a game they had for long periods dominated to a strangulating degree. But there was time still for a round of hand-clasps, back-pats and buttock slaps, the most significant from his replacement Raheem Sterling, who had sat for 85 minutes watching Grealish produce a quiet masterpiece on the flank that had been Sterling’s own private strip of turf for long periods last season. There was nothing from Pep Guardiola, although Grealish did sneak an eager, lingering look at the maniacal figure in black, who was at that moment caught up with whirling his arms and barking out assorted thoughts, ideas, tweaks, fears, counter-theories. With six Premier League games completed Bielsa’s side have still to win this season and could have done without Michail Antonio’s late, opportunistic winner for David Moyes’s impressively resilient West Ham. Abdoulaye Doucouré seals victory for Everton over struggling Norwich

There were no jeers for Norwich’s beaten players this time around, unlike at Carrow Road last weekend, but the polite applause that emanated from the mass of yellow in the away section of Goodison Park spoke of grim resignation. A sixth successive Premier League defeat of the season, at the hands of a depleted yet clearly superior Everton side, will invite more questions regarding Daniel Farke’s ability to turn Championship winners into a serious, stable top-flight concern. Rafael Benitez had his own problems coming into this game after a first league defeat followed by a Carabao Cup exit at QPR in midweek but Norwich made for the perfect, obliging opponents. An Andros Townsend penalty and Abdoulaye Doucoure’s late finish maintained the new manager’s 100% start on home soil. Jamie Vardy scores twice for Leicester and one own goal in draw with Burnley

However inconsistently Leicester continue to perform, Jamie Vardy remains a paragon of reliability. The veteran striker may not be claiming the match ball for his three goals here but the two he scored in the right end enabled Brendan Rodgers’s side to rescue a draw. Vardy, twice equalising after his own goal was followed by Maxwel Cornet’s strike, celebrated his 350th league appearance by taking his tally to seven goals in his last seven Premier League matches. Watford’s Ismaïla Sarr strikes again to deny winless Newcastle

An Ismaïla Sarr equaliser denied Newcastle their first win of the Premier League season in a 1-1 draw at Watford. The Magpies went into the game with just two points on the board but Sean Longstaff’s curled 20-yard strike gave the visitors the lead. Newcastle looked on course for their first win of the season, finishing with 19 shots, but were unable to add to their opener. Dean Smith praises 'resolute' Aston Villa after win at Manchester United – video

Speaking after his side's 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith said his defence 'stood resolute' against Manchester United's front four. 'People will look at it and say it's a big win, but for me it's a big performance,' said Smith. Aston Villa took the lead through a Kortney Hause header, only for Hause to give away a penalty moments later after handling Bruno Fernandes's cross into the area. However, Fernandes went on to miss the penalty and Villa held on to win. Gabriel Jesus’s deflected strike seals Manchester City win over Chelsea

This was Manchester City reminding their rivals that they remain the team to beat. Pep Guardiola’s team were at their authoritative best from start to finish, ending Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season with a wonderfully assured performance, and on this evidence their failure to sign Harry Kane is not going to make it harder for the champions to retain their title. It had the feel of a statement victory. Gabriel Jesus, a striker playing on the right wing, scored the only goal and City easily could have won by more. They delighted in gaining revenge for their defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final and it felt like an important moment for Guardiola, who was delighted to end a run of three consecutive defeats against Thomas Tuchel. Aston Villa’s Kortney Hause wins it as Manchester United blow penalty

Breathless and riveting: Manchester United and Aston Villa put on a show that was half-football, half-basketball and which ended with the surreal sight of Bruno Fernandes hacking over an added-time penalty that would have shared the points. After Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s moan that spot-kicks had dried up for United since Jürgen Klopp complained in January that they were being awarded a surfeit, Fernandes’s miss offered a comical and cruel irony to close the contest. Arsenal v Tottenham: match preview

Do not reach for the reading glasses: Arsenal’s treatment room is, at the time of writing, empty before Sunday’s north London derby. Mikel Arteta hopes for a victory that would provide further evidence times are changing at the Emirates, but his opposite number needs to win a few people over too. Nuno Espírito Santo’s bright start in charge of Tottenham has wobbled, but their first win at their rivals’ home in the league since November 2010 would add significantly to his stash of credit. Crystal Palace v Brighton: match preview

Brighton have unexpectedly discovered ruthlessness. The team that dropped so many points in games they dominated last season – including in February’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace – have maximised every opportunity to win six games from seven in all competitions. But form goes out the window in the M23 derby. Conor Gallagher has shone for Palace while the big decision for Patrick Vieira is whether to hand Odsonne Édouard a first start. Yves Bissouma is the main concern for Brighton after picking up a knee injury in the win over Leicester but he is back in training. Expect a tight encounter. Arsenal the perfect destination for muted Harry Kane to turn up the volume | David Hytner

Goals flow for the Spurs striker in north London derbies, so Sunday’s setting is just right for him to recover his verve The in-house Tottenham TV interviewer offered a run-through of the top lines and Harry Kane could not suppress a smile. A 2-0 home win over Arsenal. A great atmosphere inside the stadium. A goal for Kane, which made him the all-time leading scorer in the north London derby. And Spurs on top of the Premier League table. “It literally doesn’t get better than that, does it?” came the prompt. “It’s a pretty good night,” Kane replied, before saying the same thing again, as if to try to process it all.
