Cesc Fàbregas winner lifts Chelsea to deny Frank Lampard’s Derby

Frank Lampard has enjoyed so many giddy nights in this arena, whether they were spent hoisting the Premier League trophy as a key member of Chelsea’s most imposing ever team or establishing himself as the club’s all-time record goalscorer. Yet, as an opposition manager and even in narrow defeat, he will have purred at the performance delivered by his Derby County team in surroundings so familiar. The Championship side, conquerors of Manchester United in the previous round, provided a properly stern test of Chelsea’s undefeated team in a thrilling game and were denied parity – and the possibility of another penalty shootout – only when David Nugent’s late shot fizzed beyond Willy Caballero and rebounded back to the goalkeeper off the far post. Son’s double lifts Tottenham past West Ham and into the last eight

Son Heung-min has waited all season for a Tottenham goal and what do you know, two came along at once for him as he helped to chase the storm clouds from around his club. It has been a difficult period, with the news of further construction delays to the new stadium, a gloomy financial update, Monday’s loss to Manchester City at a half-empty Wembley and Mauricio Pochettino’s admission that he had never felt lower at the club. Arsenal squeeze past Blackpool after Mattéo Guendouzi’s dismissal

Arsenal got a scare from spirited Blackpool before creeping into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. The hosts seemed at ease when Stephan Lichtsteiner and Emile Smith-Rowe put them two goals up, but Mattéo Guendouzi received a red card before Paudie O’Connor scored for the League One visitors. Arsenal, especially Petr Cech, endured jittery moments before O’Connor was sent off six minutes from time and Blackpool’s threat subsided. The abundant empty seats suggested many Arsenal regulars found better things to do on a chilly Halloween night than watch a seemingly predictable contest: Arsenal, even with an improvised side, would dispose of lower league hopefuls with minimum ado, right? Mark Clattenburg’s mission to ‘educate’ Saudi referees ends after 18 months

• English official replaced in post as head of refereeing • Clattenburg could be replaced by Pierluigi Collina Mark Clattenburg’s mission to “educate” referees in Saudi Arabia has ended after just 18 months, with the former Premier League official having been abruptly replaced from his £325,000-a-year post as head of refereeing. Clattenburg, who succeeded Howard Webb at the Saudi Arabian football federation, was appointed in February 2017 with the intention that he would help professionalise refereeing standards across the country’s domestic leagues. However, with concerns mounting that there had been a lack of progress among its officials, the Saudi FA has now confirmed that the 43-year-old has been replaced as chairman of the referees’ committee. Ten young players who have taken Europe by storm this season | Martin Laurence

James Maddison and Richarlison have been brilliant in the Premier League but Germany is the place to be for emerging talent By Martin Laurence for WhoScored More than the odd eyebrow was raised when Everton agreed to meet Watford’s lofty £40m valuation of Richarlison but the Brazilian has clearly been keen to prove his worth. The 21-year-old made an immediate impact under his former boss Marco Silva, with three goals in his first two appearances for the Toffees, adding a fourth in a 2-1 win at Leicester earlier this month. The Warrington-born midfielder is a big Manchester United fan, despite starting his football career in Manchester City’s academy, and when José Mourinho and his players pitch up at the Vitality Stadium for Saturday’s early kick-off, Brooks will get a bigger thrill than most from the fact Bournemouth are currently three points and two places better off than their illustrious visitors. Back to the Bridge: Frank Lampard takes his Derby side ‘home’ | Ben Fisher

Rookie manager returns to Chelsea for a Carabao Cup tie and expects to be reunited with ‘40,000-plus friends’ “It will feel nice,” says Frank Lampard, chuckling a little sheepishly when asked about the inevitable moment when the Chelsea supporters sing his name on his Stamford Bridge homecoming. “I always appreciated it as a player. You work as a player to try to please the fans. They pay the money to come and watch you – they are the club. To be getting that support after, when you are working for an opposing team, yeah … it will be nice.” The corresponding “Super Frankie Lampard” banner will doubtless be draped across the Matthew Harding Stand, opposite the Shed End, on Wednesday evening. As Lampard puts it, going back to Chelsea with Derby – in only his 19th competitive match as a manager – is a big deal. In his first game in charge, at Reading in August, he masterminded the art of the smash and grab , and since the birth of his daughter, Patricia, six weeks ago, he admits to being

Football transfer rumours: Alexis Sánchez to PSG from Manchester United?

Today’s tittle-tattle is not a product of the Children’s Television Workshop “TURMOIL” thunders the Daily Express, in an article speculating over the future – or lack of one – of Alexis Sánchez at Manchester United. The pint-sized Chilean has endured a torrid time of it since leaving Arsenal for Old Trafford last January and seems likely to be further marginalised now that Anthony Martial has wormed his way back into José Mourinho’s good books. Tabloid speculation suggests that Manchester United big hats are wondering if it might not be a good idea to cut Sánchez, who earns £500,000 per week, loose and sell him to Paris Saint-Germain as soon as possible. “One of their top stars could go and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that a deal could be struck between the two clubs,” whispered a club Deep Throat to the Sun, possibly in an attempt to nudge the French champions in the right direction. Scott Fraser keeps cool and fires Burton past Forest and into last eight

Nigel Clough has brewed up another heady upset, guiding Burton to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at the expense of the club he and his father helped to worldwide fame. It was no fluke. This was a deserved triumph for Burton, secured thanks to an own goal by Saidy Janko and excellent efforts by Scott Fraser and Jake Hesketh. Replies for Forest by Lewis Grabban and Arvin Appiah could not save the Championship side. Burton had never reached the last 16 of the competition before while Forest were aiming to progress to the last eight for the first time in nearly 25 years – before which they lifted the trophy four times, all under the management of Brian Clough and twice with Nigel in the team. To advance Forest would have to score at the Pirelli Stadium, which they had failed to do on their two previous visits. How does Athletic Bilbao's academy manage to produce 85% of their team?

Athletic Bilbao are almost entirely reliant on their academy for players yet they have never been relegated from La Liga By Alex Clapham for Caño Football of the Sport Network The sleepy town of Lezama sits 10km outside of Bilbao and is home to just 2,400 people, but it also accommodates one of the most unusual football clubs in the world: Athletic Bilbao. Just 14 years after being founded, Athletic were accused of fielding ineligible foreign players in the 1911 Copa del Rey, so decided they would only ever pick players who were born in the Basque Country or “formed locally”. More than a century later, that policy remains in place and they are still one of three clubs who have never been relegated from the top tier of Spanish football, alongside Barcelona and Real Madrid. The club’s reliance on local talent starts at their training ground in Lezama , which was opened in 1971 and now hosts the first team, the women’s teams and their various academy sides. Norwich showing signs of promise as Daniel Farke’s methods hit home | Paul MacInnes

The Championship side are out to cause an upset at Bournemouth in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie and their young German manager has them on an impressive run When asked about Bournemouth’s Carabao Cup opponents, Eddie Howe described Norwich as “one of the form teams in the country”. It sounded like flattery, of the kind that might lull the opposition and gee up his troops. But Howe elaborated: “Their strength this season has been with their team. They have an attacking philosophy and they have momentum, so we have to be very careful. They’re a dangerous team.” Howe has become one of the most admired managers in the country in part through his attention to detail, so perhaps it is not surprising to find him familiar with Daniel Farke’s side. He will also remember Norwich as one of the teams who accompanied his side into the Premier League in 2015. At the same time he is right; there is something going on in East Anglia. The rejigged professional top tier and semi-professional second tier will look to rebalance, with two teams promoted, pending meeting the tier one licensing criteria, and one relegated into the Championship. The top flight will grow to 12 teams while the Championship will be reduced to 10. Teams now have the threat of the drop and its financial implications hanging over them again. ‘He was like a dad,’ Riyad Mahrez says of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha

• City forward pays tribute to Leicester owner killed in crash • Pep Guardiola says City had not considered resting forward Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez dedicated his winning goal against Tottenham Hotspur to Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, describing the death of the Leicester City owner as personally “heartbreaking”. Mahrez left the King Power Stadium after four successful years there in the summer, a period which included the club’s improbable Premier League triumph of 2016. After giving City a sixth‑minute lead at Wembley on Monday evening, the Algerian paid silent tribute to Vichai, pointing his fingers to the heavens as he celebrated. Raheem Sterling’s moment of clarity lifts NFL-scarred Wembley spectacle | Barney Ronay

The pitch looked terrible and the match was patchy but the Manchester City forward showed what a top performer he is Raheem Sterling spent a fair amount of his childhood dodging potholes and wrong‑footing passers-by as he kicked a ball around Wembley. So no real change there then, on a strange night when Manchester City eked out a brittle, angsty 1-0 win against a brittle, angsty Tottenham team in front of a brittle, angsty Tottenham crowd. It is hard to think of many stranger Premier League fixtures than this; albeit this 1-0 victory for the champions was strange in an understated, slightly dreamy kind of way. For most of the first half it was almost impossible to look past the wretched spectacle of the Wembley pitch , heavily scarred by the markings of the NFL game on Sunday night and appearing here like a jilted bride in its faded Super Bowl suit, still mourning that scuppered elopement with the man from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Riyad Mahrez’s early strike enough for Manchester City to see off Spurs

It was difficult to reconcile the intrisic weirdness of this occasion. Wembley yawned with empty seats; the pitch looked like a pudding – a legacy of Sunday’s NFL game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Philadelphia Eagles – and, for long spells, there was a strange lack of intensity. Tottenham continued to look disjointed, pockmarking their play with errors, and Mauricio Pochettino, who had said beforehand that he had never felt unhappier during his time at the club, cut a frustrated figure. Having had their backsides gently braised and handed back to them by Manchester City on two occasions in the Premier League last season, Tottenham have unwittingly hatched upon a novel wheeze to try and put one over on Pep Guardiola’s men when they meet on Monday night. Their ongoing state of homelessness means they continue to pitch up at Wembley, which having hosted three NFL games in the past few weeks boasts a pitch that is more ploughed field than fairway ; a preposterously bumpy track that could – ironically – prove a great leveller. Summary of Budget 2018: Key points at-a-glance

Thomas Tuchel is making slow but sure progress at PSG

The manager’s emphasis on defensive rigour and discipline will pay dividends if given time By Adam White and Eric Devin for Get French Football News PSG don’t handle change well. In nearly eight years of QSI rule, the club has rarely deviated from their philosophy of throwing vast sums at celebrity forwards and pandering to their whims, naively persisting with one-dimensional, possession-based football and indulging in rampant short-termism. These ideas have brought swathes of domestic trophies but they also left the team on a plateau. It seems PSG are finally starting to change under Thomas Tuchel but, as this week underlined, the project is in a state of flux. For the club to secure the success it craves, the owners will have to change their habits and finally accept the uncertainty that comes with that. At first glance, the last few days seem to fit the now almost clichéd PSG narrative: they put on an underwhelming display in Europe and then win effortlessly against a Ligue 1 r

Bayer Leverkusen's rout of Bremen underlines their underachievements | Andy Brassell

The 6-2 win was a fine display that deserved to be celebrated, but it also drove home how far short they have fallen The Bundesliga loves a left turn, and this weekend it saved its best one for the programme’s final fixture. This was supposed to be resurgent Werder Bremen’s day, when victory would have taken them into second place behind Borussia Dortmund, confirming a return to relevance in the extraordinary debut year at the helm of coach Florian Kohfeldt, who celebrates a year in charge on Tuesday. With just over an hour gone it looked like it still could be, even though they had gone into the break 3-0 down to visiting Bayer Leverkusen. Yuya Osako’s goal, eventually awarded after VAR intervention, reduced the deficit to 3-2, following 40-year-old substitute Claudio Pizarro’s strike, his 193rd in the Bundesliga, which made him the second-oldest scorer in the competition’s history, behind Mirko Votava – also of Werder – in 1996. Women’s Super League: talking points from the weekend’s action

Arsenal surf wave of confidence; Vicky Jepson tightens Liverpool’s defence; Manchester City need to have a plan B Arsenal got their second-least convincing result of the Super League season against Bristol City: a 4-0 win. The same names keep cropping up on the scoresheet: Danielle van de Donk, Vivianne Miedema and Jordan Nobbs were on the mark again. The big difference between this season and the last is that Miedema is staying fit and Nobbs has added goals to what was already a fantastic game. It means that they have not missed Kim Little, who broke a leg against Chelsea a couple of weeks ago. Little is their captain, the most-capped Scotland player and extremely influential but this Arsenal machine has not missed a beat. They are blowing teams away, whether it was Chelsea (5-0), Reading (6-0) or Bristol City: the level of performance does not change. Football transfer rumours: Tanguy Ndombele to the Premier League?

Today’s tell-all is here for your delectation With Real Madrid expected to consign Julen Lopetegui to his local Oficina Empleo this morning, Antonio Conte has been installed as the favourite to replace him as long as he can extricate himself from the contractual ties that bind him to Chelsea. Reports from Italy suggest the Italian and his former employers have agreed on a compromise over the £9.5m pay-off he received upon leaving the club last summer, which Conte would be obliged to forego if he takes another job this season. Following Real’s thrashing at the hands of Barcelona on Sunday, Lopetegui’s dismissal after 14 games in charge is a formality and Conte is eager to replace him. Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha confirmed dead in helicopter crash

• Thai owner’s helicopter crashed on Saturday night • Vichai bought Leicester City in 2010 Leicester City’s owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, died in the helicopter crash outside the club’s stadium on Saturday night, it was confirmed on Sunday night by the club. He was one of five people killed – all on board the helicopter – when the accident occurred around an hour after Leicester’s draw at home to West Ham United. The Thai owner’s helicopter crashed near a car park near the south-east corner of the stadium shortly after taking off from the pitch at around 8.20pm. Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was a different sort of owner, one who cared | David Conn

His sustained financial investment in Leicester City, awareness of the club’s emotional significance and his human touch set Vichai apart from some other overseas owners As the awful news broke over Saturday night of the crashed helicopter in which the Leicester City owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, two pilots and as yet unnamed fellow passengers had been travelling, the emotional responses of supporters illustrated how appreciated the Thai magnate had been. Flags, flowers and other offerings were laid outside the stadium sponsored by his duty free company, King Power, and tributes paid: to his stewardship of the club, personal munificence and philanthropy to good causes in Leicester. Towering over these qualities to claim fans’ admiration was, of course, the wildly unlikely Premier League title win of 2016, which followed sustained financial investment – Vichai spent more than £100m to bankroll the club’s 2014 promotion from the Championship. That and his human and communal touch se

Anthony Martial dazzles to help Manchester United edge past Everton

This was Manchester United’s best display so far this season and a second win in eight matches was much needed. While there was another concerning error from Paul Pogba, which led to Everton’s consolation, there were further spells of the quick and slick play United are showing more of as the season enters autumn. Romelu Lukaku was dropped for the first time of his United career, joining another of Mourinho’s supposed A-listers, Alexis Sánchez on the bench. Luis Suárez hits hat-trick as Barcelona demolish insipid Real Madrid

Real Madrid have now won just once in six games – and if this is to be the end for Julen Lopetegui, it was a painful one, leaving his team in ninth place, seven points behind Barcelona. Nor was it just the scoreline; it was the sensations too. In the first 45 minutes here, Madrid simply didn’t exist – they were, put bluntly, awful. Simply not there. And while they did react in the second half, while they made a game of this, while they rebelled, it was insufficient. Lionel Messi was not there, but Suárez was. He had feared that the chance had gone, and them took charge of ensuring it hadn’t, adding two more goals to go with his first-half penalty – both of them superb. Suárez had departed head in his hands, muttering to himself at half-time. Looking up at the scoreboard, that might have appeared odd, but the reaction was no more than a reflection of a reality that had been played out here and around the ground 95,000 culés felt the same. Barcelona were leading 2-0 yet Suárez knew, as

Forcing the lump back down his throat, Connell tried to make sense of it all. The emotions were still too raw. Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic holds his nerve to end Arsenal’s winning run

So the winning run has been curtailed at 11. Arsenal’s resurgent streak in all competitions was checked in this corner of south London by an aggressive and energetic Crystal Palace team whose first home goals of the season, both from the penalty spot, left the visitors clutching merely a point for their efforts. That, in truth, felt sufficient reward given Unai Emery’s side had only played in fits and starts. They departed rather bruised by the whole experience. Perhaps they had not seen it coming given how obliging Palace have proved on home turf in recent times. As it was, having recovered a deficit to secure a lead with two goals in four second-half minutes, Arsenal were only eight minutes from prevailing yet again when Wilfried Zaha, pesky throughout, bamboozled Granit Xhaka with a blur of step-overs and eventually coaxed a lunge from the Swiss. Down went Zaha and Luka Milivojevic, for the second time in the afternoon, thumped in the resultant penalty. Continue reading... from

The Carabao Cup, as it is called in its current guise, will probably be abolished soon, squeezed out of existence by a European Super League or sheer neglect. The alterations made to this season’s tournament – VAR, no extra time, Dennis Wise inspecting a Vietnamese post office before the first-round draw – have not prevented attendances from being low and entire reserve sides being fielded, even by the likes of Fleetwood Town, for pity’s sake. Evidently the alterations have not gone far enough. Pressing is risky but the best way to ruffle Pep Guardiola’s feathers | Jonathan Wilson

Tottenham came unstuck when they pressed high at the Etihad last season but it was preferable to their timid performance against Manchester City at Wembley Tottenham would press them, push high up the pitch, even from goal-kicks. They’d be aggressive and adventurous. They’d stop Manchester City playing out from the back. This would be a proper test of Pep Guardiola’s side. And they did. Nine days before Christmas last year, Spurs went to the Etihad and pressed hard and high. They did ring City’s box at goal-kicks. But City were not flustered in the slightest, even though they were restricted to just 53% possession against a season average of 65.5% to that point. Ederson just kept pinging long balls over the press: 19 of them, against a season average of 3.7. City won 4-1 and it could have been more. The Tottenham winger, who has also scored in the Champions League against Barcelona and the Carabao Cup against Watford, is in arguably the form of his life, although he does not see it that way. He considers the question with his usual calm and he goes hard in one direction. “I am very satisfied and very happy,” Lamela says. “I have no reason to complain. I am playing as much as I expected to and I am happy with that. It is just the beginning of the season.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/oct/27/erik-lamela-happy-tottenham-hotspur-form-of-his-life

Football League: Sharp shoots Sheffield United top as Norwich climb table

Lambert sees Ipswich lose, Fletcher lifts pressure on Rowett Sunderland land fifth successive win, Yeovil fans’ trip rewarded After Middlesbrough’s lunchtime draw with Derby had opened the door, Sheffield United seized the chance to claim top spot by beating Wigan 4-2. Defender Chey Dunkley put through his own net for Blades’ opener before Kal Naismith’s equaliser. Billy Sharp’s roofed finish on the stroke of half-time put United ahead. United had not lost in any of the last 40 matches in which the club captain had scored and another Sharp strike put Chris Wilder’s team out of sight. He claimed his hat-trick with a delicate dink, his first treble in a decade. Joe Garner’s late goal was only a consolation for Wigan. Shane Long fluffs his lines at the last as Saints and Newcastle hit impasse

In a match of precious few opportunities, and just as little good football, Shane Long missed the chance to give Southampton all three points against Newcastle in the final minute, side-footing wide from 10 yards out with the goal gaping. That was the standout moment of an attritional match in which both teams tried but generally came up short. Southampton had the better moments, bringing two saves out of Martin Dubravka in the first half, but Newcastle were largely comfortable. They have three points this Premier League season, each from a 0-0 stalemate away from home. Sadio Mané scores twice as Liverpool ease past Cardiff on way to top

There was a shock at Anfield as Cardiff City became the first opposition team to score a Premier League goal against Liverpool for 918 minutes. Otherwise, Jürgen Klopp’s team returned to the top of the table as a matter of routine; convincingly and without challenge. Neil Warnock was correct in his assertion that a Cardiff win here was impossible. Mohamed Salah scored his 51st goal in 66 appearances for Liverpool and also provided two assists, for Xherdan Shaqiri and Sadio Mané, as the hosts cruised to the Premier League summit. Mané struck twice while Callum Paterson’s consolation for the visitors spoiled Alisson’s aims of a seventh clean sheet this term. Callum Wilson hits double as Bournemouth trounce 10-man Fulham

It’s only been five months since Fulham hearts were filled with hope after their promotion to the Premier League, but the optimism of that May day when they beat Aston Villa in the play-off final is long gone. This 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth was their seventh of the season, their 28th goal conceded in the league and another day when Slavisa Jokanovic looks increasingly like a manager guessing his way through the season. David Bowie famously sometimes used the ‘cut-up’ technique to compose lyrics, cutting up phrases then piecing them back together at random. There is an element of that to Jokanovic’s team selection: this game saw him use his the 10th different defence and Sergio Rico replaced Marcus Bettinelli in goal, making Rico their third keeper used in 10 games. It’s worth noting none of the changes have been due to injury. Glenn Murray’s 100th Brighton goal clinches Wolves victory

Glenn Murray just keeps going. Once the unexpected news came through that the striker would start here despite being knocked unconscious in a clash of heads at Newcastle last week, it was no surprise to see the 35-year-old score the game’s only goal. With a sure finish early in the second half, he claimed his sixth goal of the season and his 100th in total for Brighton. How Wolves could do with a poacher of similar quality. Bogle howler rescues Middlesbrough in a game of own goals against Derby

Championship attendances frequently outstrip those in La Liga and Serie A but England’s second tier is still treated with snobbish disdain in certain quarters. There are those who believe that the third most watched League in Europe – only the Premier League and the Bundesliga attract more fans – is the equivalent of fast food; readily available but ultimately unsatisfying. Andy Cole: ‘I apologise now to everybody for being the way I’ve been’

The former Manchester United and Newcastle striker on the ‘torture’ that followed his lifesaving kidney transplant, his feud with Teddy Sheringham and his hopes for the future “I’m not ungrateful because I get to live another day,” Andy Cole says as he shivers and pulls on his coat. A cold wind gusts through the sunlit garden where we sit in Alderley Edge. Fifteen miles from Old Trafford, which the former striker still thinks of as the Theatre of Dreams, it’s just me, Cole and an emptying pot of tea. As a Manchester United player who won five league titles, the Champions League and three FA Cups, including the treble in 1999 , Cole lived a fantasy life for years, even if his wounded quietness gave the wrong impression that he was surly. Yet when the 47-year-old says, “I’m never going to be the individual I was before”, Cole is not mourning the end of his career. His lament about the “internal battle” and “torture”, which has deepened his depression and made him consider taking his o
