Australia move on from thrashing as Matildas ride luck in draw with Portugal

Portugal 1-1 Australia (Encarnacao 87; Ibini-Isei 73) Goalkeeper Lydia Williams makes two key late saves The Matildas bounced back from their 7-0 drubbing by Spain at the weekend by claiming a 1-1 draw against Portugal in their second and final friendly of the June international window in Estoril. Princess Ibini-Isei came of the bench to put the visitors into the lead on 73 minutes with her first international goal, punishing some earlier profligacy from Portugal. Football transfer rumours: Chelsea to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus?

Today’s piffle is feeling the love Harry Maguire may not have experienced much love last season but he’s certainly felt it over the past couple of days. Having tied the knot in a lavish wedding ceremony with long-time partner Fern in a French chateau this weekend, he has jetted off on his honeymoon amid a swirl of rumours that Barcelona want a piece of him. Yes, according to hot air blowing over from Spain to England, the Catalan club want the big centre-back as part of any deal for Frenkie de Jong … but Manchester United love their error-prone meme so much they have told Barça manager Xavi to keep his hands off their man. All this means that Barça’s midfield’s metronome De Jong will cost United the full price of £69m, with the club still in the driving seat to sign him. Reports that Phil Jones is next on Xavi’s wishlist are so far not forthcoming. Martin Bengtsson: football’s Swedish wonderkid whose dream died at Inter

The story of a player who went to Milan full of hope and departed in the grip of depression is told in a compelling film If Martin Bengtsson feels stressed he kicks a football around on his own and, almost immediately, the tension begins to ebb away. “Nowadays I play for meditation,” he says. “I have a very natural and close relationship with the ball; we still have a good rapport.” Bengtsson is 36 but, 20 years ago, his first touch was so seamlessly adhesive that opponents could have been forgiven for believing he and footballs were inseparable. The then Sweden youth international was such a gifted midfielder that he was swiftly snapped up by Internazionale’s academy; which is where everything went wrong. The cultural stigmatisation of referees is still relevant today | Jonathan Liew

A new novel based on Uriah Rennie – the Premier League’s first and only black referee – has reopened an age-old issue In one of the most memorable and moving passages in Your Show – the new novel by Ashley Hickson-Lovence based on the life of Uriah Rennie – the Premier League’s first black referee is scrolling through a selection of internet comments and press coverage on some of his recent performances. “Too big for his Fila-sponsored boots.” “In my picture book dictionary under ‘showy referee’.” “The penny never dropped that the match wasn’t about him.” “A Malteser Sellotaped to a bag of marshmallows.” On it goes, for pages and pages. Your Show is a remarkable book: highly stylised, written in the second person and – although based on extensive interviews with the man himself – largely imagined. Yet the most affecting parts of the novel are the stuff we know happened. The title of the book derives from an announcement made over the public address system at Deepdale as the officia

Threat of Fifa ban looms over India and Chhetri’s hopes of passing Messi | John Duerden

Turmoil at India’s FA could lead to ban and the national coach, Igor Stimac, has warned those in charge to ‘wake up’ If Estonia had not conceded five goals to Lionel Messi this month, India’s legendary striker Sunil Chhetri would be second behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the highest active international goalscorers’ list. The 37-year-old has 84, two behind the Argentinian, after scoring four in the just-finished third round of qualification for the 2023 Asian Cup. That haul helped India win all three games and stroll to a second successive appearance at the continent’s biggest event. Chhetri is a little concerned, however, that he may not be able to participate in the tournament – and not because there is currently no host after China relinquished those duties last month. The worry is that India may be hit with a Fifa ban. Today’s gossip is feeling refreshed Tottenham have joined the race to sign Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus . They will rival Arsenal to sign the Brazil striker who will be allowed to leave following the arrival of Erling Haaland at the Etihad. Someone will have to stump up £50m to get Jesus to move to London. Arsenal have supposedly made an offer for Atlético Madrid’s Álvaro Morata , and firmly have an eye on Ajax defender Lisandro Martínez . It could be a busy summer at the Emirates. Feted as English football’s youngest chief executive after joining Barnsley for a short spell in 2018 at the age of 30, Ganaye spent last season juggling his role at Nancy with his job as executive president of the Belgian club KV Oostende. Barnsley, who were relegated from the Championship in April despite reaching the playoffs last year, are, like Nancy and Oostende, part-owned by New City Capital – an investment group that also includes American investors, the Pacific Media Group. “The starting brief was never that I’d be there 100% of the time,” said Ganaye of his dual roles. “Discussions are under way in order to define a structure that can allow all of the clubs in the group to function.” Continue read

Mbappé told by French president Macron not to leave PSG, claims Florentino Pérez

Real Madrid president no longer saw ‘the Mbappé I wanted’ Pérez claims PSG offer and Qatar trip also changed player’s mind Real Madrid’s Florentino Pérez claims the French president, Emmanuel Macron, intervened to persuade Kylian Mbappé to sign a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain. Madrid had targeted the forward last summer but after failing with a £170m bid were confident they could lure him to the Bernabéu once his deal had expired. However, the France international signed a new, highly lucrative three-year contract with PSG, who are bankrolled by Qatari Sports Investment, a subsidiary of the country’s sovereign wealth fund. Erling Haaland’s ruthlessness will give Manchester City a new edge

The combination of City’s creativity and Haaland’s clinical finishing should scare clubs across Europe By Ben McAleer for WhoScored Manchester City scored 99 goals on their way to winning the Premier League title this season. They scored more goals than any team in Europe’s top five leagues, with 16 players finding the net during the campaign. There are areas in their squad that need strengthening, notably at left-back and in central midfield, but the champions’ first summer signing has been a £51.5m deal for Erling Haaland . The best team in England have added the goalscorer they craved 12 months ago. Injury restricted the Norwegian to 21 starts in the Bundesliga this season, but he ended the campaign with 22 goals and seven assists. He scored a goal for every 87 minutes he was on the pitch. Importantly, Haaland rectifies something of a weakness in the City squad. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/who-scored-blog/2022/jun/14/

Gareth Southgate and the never-ending story of English football’s delusions | Barney Ronay

Supporters have turned on the manager after humiliation against Hungary – he is now a victim of his own success “The case against Clevinger was open and shut. The only thing missing was something to charge him with.” And so, tossed on the familiar tides of rage, shortsightedness and good old-fashioned English exceptionalism, it becomes necessary to defend Gareth Southgate. In a way this is all quite comforting. Every England manager has two things in common: they all fail in the end, if only because there is no sane gauge of success; and they all tell us, in their own ways, exactly why England managers fail. Kyle Walker will be vital to England’s World Cup campaign, hints Southgate

Manager praises maturity and leadership of right-back ‘He doesn’t have to be really vocal but it’s his determination’ Gareth Southgate has dropped a strong hint that Kyle Walker will be fundamental to England’s World Cup campaign, praising the Manchester City defender’s leadership qualities and emphasising his influence. Walker has 67 caps and, at 32, is perhaps nearing the winter of his international career. He can operate on the right of a defensive three but faces competition from Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier at right-back if Southgate goes with his preference of a back four in Qatar. The manager was asked about leaders within his squad and, unprompted, spoke of Walker in terms that suggested he will be hard to dislodge from any starting XI. England’s maverick Jack Grealish plays his part but cannot create liftoff | Barney Ronay

Midfielder has his moments in stalemate with Italy but it is not enough to justify the public clamour for his inclusion What did we learn? How did it feel? What were the bullet points, the red lines, the notes of glory in this goalless Nations League international in an empty stadium between two teams who spent long periods of this game struggling against some invisible plane of resistance, like flies buzzing down a window pane? As competitive games go this one stretched the semantic limits of the word “competitive” into some interesting new spaces. At times it felt like a late July club tour practice game. Socceroos have it all to do against Peru but World Cup remains a real possibility | Emma Kemp

Just the South Americans now stand in Australia’s way of reaching Qatar after an unconvincing but effective performance against UAE The last – and only – time Australia played Peru was at the 2018 World Cup. Bert van Marwijk was the stop-gap Socceroos coach, a 38-year-old Tim Cahill came off the bench for the final competitive match of his international career, and Australia as a country was collectively trying to figure out where to find goals from open play. In reality that unenviable task actually belonged to Graham Arnold, who was in the stands in Sochi and due to take over from Van Marwijk as soon as the team boarded the plane home from Russia. Peru came away 2-0 victors to mark their first World Cup win in 40 years. Their Argentine manager, Ricardo Gareca, had captured hearts and minds by qualifying the unfancied country for their first finals since 1982. I Am Zlatan review – Ibrahimović biopic misses an open goal

The Swede’s journey from troubled kid to football phenomenon fuels a formulaic drama that only a fan could love This formulaic biopic of footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović has been a box-office phenomenon in Sweden (where Ibrahimović played for the national team), but it’s hard to imagine that this rags to riches story will connect with audiences that are not already invested in him as a player. Based on a biography by David Lagercrantz , the film shows Zlatan as a hyperactive, disruptive kid, a lank-haired, surly adolescent and the product of a family background that is punctuated by regular visits from the police and social services. It’s an impressive trajectory to sports stardom, admittedly, but it’s just not a particularly compelling viewing experience. Wales v the world: emotional Ukraine final could make any fan’s heart skip a beat | Elis James

This was not just a unique goal but the uniquest goal; a goal more unique than all other goals that are also unique In September 1994, Leeds United beat Manchester United – the first time they had done so since February 1981 – with David Wetherall and Brian Deane their scorers in a 2-1 win . Which is a strange place to begin a piece about a Roberto Carlos goal, but please bear with me: the seamless segue will soon reveal itself. A couple of days later, I returned from school to find a letter addressed to me – a rarity, given I was 15 – so ripped open the envelope in characteristically clumsy manner to discover what can only be described as hate mail. Accompanying newspaper cuttings of the aforementioned game was a letter extolling the virtues of Phil Ma-sing-ahhhh, along with general vitriol aimed at Manchester United in general and Alex Ferguson in particular. Culture of trust, talent and graft has given Grimsby chance of EFL return | Jason Stockwood

Ensuring we enjoy the positive moments when they come and supporting each other is what makes us greater together Football is the business of memory making. It has the ability to create those rare moments of joy that transcend our day-to-day lives – that, per TS Eliot, “shall pierce you with a sudden painful joy”. This year at Grimsby we’ve had a brilliant uplift in attendances and the growing community in the newly opened fan zone. But beyond that it has been reconnecting with the town I love, sharing moments of joy and making memories with my family and friends (old and new) that has underlined to me what football is really about. Ukraine players offer their suffering nation a moment of joy and clarity | Jonathan Liew

For 94 minutes these bruised and grieving men managed to shut out the world and throw themselves into their sport Trauma can produce a devastating clarity. It paints the world in new and shocking colours, ruthlessly strips away what matters from what doesn’t, dulls the pain with pure adrenaline and primal instinct. Car crash victims talk of calmly strolling away from a burning wreckage. Survivors of dreadful accidents often chat lucidly away to the paramedics while lying in their own blood. When pushed to extremes, humans have a limitless capacity to endure, to carry on, to do the thing that is needed. A lot of the speculation ahead of this game centred on how Ukraine’s footballers would cope with their first international fixture since the invasion of their country. Whether, for all the goodwill and generosity they have encountered, their lack of match practice would ultimately be the telling factor, that the emotional burden would take its toll in the pivotal moments. Socceroos come from behind to beat Jordan in World Cup qualifier warm-up

Bailey Wright and Awer Mabil on target in 2-1 win for Australia UAE await in crunch Asian playoff next week You could almost hear how sweetly the ball connected with Mousa Al-Taamari’s left boot. A scorching, first-time shot from well outside the area that bulleted past Mat Ryan’s outstretched gloves and into the corner of his goal. The Jordan attacker had been threatening to do it for the previous 17 minutes, at one point dribbling past a few players in one move. Australia’s defence was all at sea and this friendly appeared to heading on a similar path to other recent matches. But the Socceroos did not hang their heads. Even though they were passive and deeply unconvincing, they had an equaliser before half-time. And after an improved second half the score in Doha read 2-1, ensuring Australia will carry the confidence of a win into next week’s decisive World Cup qualifying play-off against the United Arab Emirates. Ukraine players show their nation’s culture is alive and kicking | Nick Ames

The World Cup playoff semi-final in Scotland is a reminder that the war-torn country’s identity and football heritage are intact It would not be a huge surprise if the ball that scored Ukraine’s first official goal was still travelling. They were 3-0 down against Hungary in the western city of Uzhhorod when, with virtually the final action, Ivan Hetsko lined up a free-kick just beyond the edge of the “D” and struck it with such shuddering force that it rebounded straight out of the net. The strike meant nothing and everything: it was 29 April 1992 and Ukraine would take some years to assemble a committed XI in the post-USSR shakedown, but Hetsko’s thunderbolt had given them a form of lift-off. “It was very difficult for us at first and I think we are in a similar position now,” says Myron Markevych, who was overseeing Volyn Lutsk in the inaugural Ukrainian championship back then and later managed the national team. “Except we had to begin from zero then, and today we are basically s
