Championship 2019-20 season preview

Fulham could bounce straight back with their four-man attack while Leeds are sure to be in the promotion mix and Neil Warnock’s Cardiff are not to be ignored There may not be an overwhelming favourite for automatic promotion but certain teams appear streets ahead in the firepower stakes. None more so than Fulham , who will likely start with an attacking diamond of Aleksandar Mitrovic, a Premier League striker in all but name, Anthony Knockaert, Ivan Cavaleiro and Tom Cairney, a player capable of running games in this division. Fulham deservedly took flak for their lavish and directionless spending last summer but it is impossible to ignore their latest business. They were, though, a soft touch in defence last season, so Scott Parker still has plenty to address , and the expectation will prove a test of his credentials. Charlton's academy keeps producing young players who make the grade

Five years ago Konsa, Grant, Gomez and Lookman played for Charlton’s Under-18s. Now they are bringing in big transfer fees By Gavin Willacy for Playing in the Shadows When Ademola Lookman joined RB Leipzig from Everton for £22.5m last week, the transfer fees spent on four former Charlton youth teammates hit £50m. Aston Villa signed England Under-21 defender Ezri Konsa from Brentford for £12m in July, following Karlan Grant’s move to Huddersfield in January, Lookman’s £11m move to Everton in 2017 , and Liverpool’s £3.5m deal for Joe Gomez in 2015. How does a club that has spent the last three seasons in the third tier produce so much talent – including four youngsters who all played together in their Under-18s five years ago? I had the privilege of working with Charlton’s academy for seven years. In that time, they signed 72 apprentices (known in football as scholars). Twenty-nine of them (40%) are still playing professionally in the Premier League, Football League or top Europe

Football transfer rumours: Samuel Umtiti to Manchester United?

Today’s fluff is freshly filtered The next big thing? No, it’s not esports or a Mercury Music Prize-nominated artist that you’ve never heard of. It’s Marseille’s Isaac Lihadji , a 17-year-old that is so fresh off the production line, he doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. Imagine! That hasn’t stopped Manchester United , Barcelona and Everton all doing their research on the winger that has just one year remaining on his contract. Fuzzy numbers are muddying the waters in the USWNT's equal-pay fight

As the USWNT’s equal-pay lawsuit moves toward mediation, both sides are using numbers subject to interpretation and spin US Soccer’s argument that it has paid the women’s national team more than it has paid their male counterparts over a 10-year span is technically correct, at least when World Cup prize money is excluded. But the numbers still lend themselves to interpretation and spin from each side. Some of US Soccer’s figures, which it released on Monday, will throw a wrench in the women’s lawsuit seeking equal pay. ‘He calculates every step’: how Edu can bring success to Arsenal again

The technical director has a wealth of experience in Brazil and has fulfilled the prophecy of his old teammate, Gilberto Silva Edu was reading Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad when Gilberto Silva said to him: “You will become a manager in the future. You have the perfect profile.” Almost two decades later his then-Arsenal teammate’s prophecy has been proved right. Edu has returned to the club as technical director tasked with restoring the success he enjoyed there as a player, including as a member of 2003-04’s Invincibles . Edu may not be a manager in the traditional English sense but his management and executive skills have earned him three technical director roles since he gave up playing. The midfielder retired while with Corinthians in December 2010 and three months later received an unexpected invitation to take that position at the Brazilian club. Football transfer rumours: Shkodran Mustafi to Monaco for £27m?

Today’s rumours ask no questions and tell no lies Would you like to be the world’s most expensive defender? Course you would! So would Harry Maguire , and he’s getting quite the hump with Leicester City for standing in his way if this morning’s stories are to be believed. Manchester United are ready to top the £75m fee paid by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk – which seems a touch strong to the Mill but then who are we to stand in the way of market forces – but Leicester are holding out for at least £85m and Maguire thinks it’s time they honoured a gentleman’s agreement to let him go for the right price. If they eventually do, James Tarkowski and Lewis Dunk , neither of whom looks like considerable downgrades and would be far cheaper, are among those in the fashion parade for his replacement. Quick thinking and calm: what Phillip Cocu will bring to Derby

Fast‑forward almost two decades and it is a stadium Cocu now calls home after replacing Frank Lampard in the Derby dugout. Cocu won seven league titles at PSV Eindhoven (four as captain and three in five years as a manager) but a burgeoning reputation as a coach was dented by a disastrous 98-day reign at Fenerbahçe last year. Reports suggest the ex-Spurs striker is set to leave Real Madrid to join Chinese club Jiangsu Suning on a three-year deal that will see him earn £1m a week – double that of the world’s current highest-paid player, Argentina’s Ezequiel Lavezzi, who plays for Hebei China Fortune. Gareth Bale aims to have Beckham-like impact with move to Jiangsu Suning

• Welshman has until 31 July to complete China move • Relations with Zinedine Zidane entirely broken down Gareth Bale believes he can be at the forefront of a football revolution in China should he complete his impending move to Jiangsu Suning. While the deal, which is worth around £1m per week to the Real Madrid forward, is being finalised, a key motivation for the Welshman is the chance to help affect fundamental change in the sport, much in the way that David Beckham energised the game in the United States with his move to MLS. Reporting on the 2019 Women's World Cup: 'It was a turning point'

One of our reporting team reflects on the intensity and excitement of covering 15 transformative matches in 34 days “Equal pay! Equal pay!” I knew I would be watching history this summer. After all, it was to be the “biggest ever” edition of the Women’s World Cup, a turning point in the development of the women’s game and the best showcase of its improving quality. But as the crowd joined the US women’s national team in sending the chant for equal pay echoing around the Stade de Lyon, the magnitude of the effect of this competition started to sink in. The tournament was expected to break new ground on the pitch and spur footballing change off it, but no one could have predicted the extent to which the players themselves would use their four-yearly platform to demand more than they were being given. Grant Holt: ‘Who would have thought I’d play in the Premier League?’

After a long and winding career that peaked at Norwich and finished with 207 goals, Holt may be one of the last of his kind On the way to Norwich to interview Grant Holt, he rings me on the train. “Hi mate,” he says in a breezy voice, “you should get off at Diss, it’s quicker.” The former Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday and Sengkang Marine striker has a role coaching students at a boarding school deep in the Norfolk countryside, so I take his advice. But it turns out that Diss is twice as far from the school as Norwich, to the extent that the taxi driver has no clue how to get there. I put that to Holt when I meet him and his reply is succinct. “No, it isn’t.” A certain obstinacy served Holt well in his career. The 38-year-old has published an autobiography that details his journey up and, just as often, down the league ladder. He played for 17 clubs and scored 192 goals. Some spells he relished, others he spent at loggerheads with the manager (see: Colin Calderwood, Nottingham Fore

The rise and tragic fall of Arild Berg, Norway’s lost footballing soul

The midfielder was a sublime talent for Bodø/Glimt, but illness ravaged an exciting career and he sadly died in June “You are suffering from a double soul,” a faith healer once told Arild Berg. “A dead man’s soul went astray and entered your body. Now it has to look after two souls and it is only natural that you have no energy left. If I remove his soul then everything is going to be fine.” “His soul?” Berg responded with a smile. “If you are going to remove a soul here I would prefer it to be mine. I am quite tired of it.” It says much about Berg that he was still able to draw on his self-deprecating humour because at that stage in his life he had been looking for a solution to a medical condition that afflicted him for more than 12 years. Berg had gone from being the most talented Norwegian footballer of his generation to a man with a single aim: to find out what was wrong with him. Back to the future: Bradford bring heritage numbers to English football

Each player will have a number on their shirt representing their place in Bradford’s 116-year history as part of rebuilding project For many football supporters, pre-season is a time of optimism. What lies ahead is the great unknown but is generally judged by the players who come and go. Some clubs, however, spend the summer not only rebuilding a squad but an entire organisation after a fallow period. Bradford City are one such example. Two years ago, Bradford were one game from the Championship; now they are a League Two side after being relegated with a whimper last season . Their performances were overshadowed by the reign of the German chief executive Edin Rahic, who left last December after a two-and-a-half year spell amid demands from fans for him to go. Gareth Bale could be a Real Madrid cult hero so why has it gone so wrong? | Jonathan Wilson

Bale is not exactly a victim but this sorry story of the modern super-player is fundamentally of Madrid’s own making On the one hand, the massive imbalances of wealth within football are a terrible thing. On the other, they can lead to deliciously ludicrous morality tales. The hero is lured to a faraway kingdom by promises of unimaginable wealth and other heroes to hero with. The hero heroes but perhaps not as heroically as some would like. Then the king decides he wants a new hero and that means this hero must leave. But this hero enjoys his luxurious life and doesn’t want to go anywhere where there may be fewer other heroes to hero with and where the pillows may be less silken and the fairways less lush. Impasse ensues. This could be about Neymar and Paris Saint-Germain but it’s about Gareth Bale and Real Madrid – and the fact that the pattern repeats with such contrasting personalities suggests the issue is systemic issue rather than being about individuals. The tough part will be keeping them coming Wednesday’s match had been over for 20 minutes when hundreds of girls, holding posters and T-shirts and patiently standing at a rail that separated the bleachers from the pitch, spotted their favorite player and began to shout as one: Car-li! Car-li! Car-li! Car-li! Carli Lloyd, the 37-year-old captain of Sky Blue FC and a veteran of four Women’s World Cups, would sign autographs and pose for selfies, because that is what she always does. Kit sponsors can offer fond memories but betting logos would not be missed | Max Rushden

Tottenham with Holsten and Arsenal with JVC evoke shirt nostalgia but gambling is already front and centre in football Forty years ago this week, Liverpool announced the first ever top flight sponsorship deal in the UK with Hitachi – £100,000 over two years. For the 1979 version of Twitter – presumably just people shouting in the street – this story must have trended. Football fans don’t like change, and a hifi manufacturer on the front of a pure red Liverpool kit, while everyone else was clear and unbranded, must have hurt. Without radio phone-ins people must have written angry letters somewhere, or worse, actually spoken to each other about it face to face. Was this the first moment where someone claimed “the game’s gone”? You can just imagine Steve in Birkenhead claiming this was “the tip of the iceberg … soon Toblerone will sponsor the ball and change its shape and the game won’t be gone, it will be WELL AND TRULY gone”. The game has gone many times since, now it goes on a weekly

Picking up his mobile and waving it in the air before reporters, he proceeded to lay the blame squarely at the door of technology. “I think phones,” he said. “I think technology has been the decline in attendance, No 1.” Fitzgerald went on to tell the story of being out with his wife for a meal and being irritated by the sight of all four members of the two couples at the next table spending their entire evening staring at and playing with their smartphones instead of talking to each other and suggested that younger sports fans are incapable of enjoying anything without the a

Explained: Does revenue explain the USWNT's World Cup bonus shortfall?

As the US women’s soccer team’s wage discrimination lawsuit heads toward mediation, here’s everything you need to know about the pressing questions When the Guardian reported the exclusive details of how small the World Cup bonuses for the US women’s national team are compared to their male counterparts, many of the responses to that article centered around one topic: revenue. Revenue, some argue, must explain the difference in bonuses, whether they come from US Soccer or via Fifa. If, the argument goes, women’s soccer generates less money than men’s then it is natural the bonuses are smaller. Here is a look at whether that argument holds true and everything else you need to know about revenue as it relates to the topic of equal pay. Delph determined to put 'frustrating' Man City end behind him at Everton

‘It was really frustrating … all you want to do is play football’ ‘Whether on or off the pitch, you’re going to get the same desire’ Fabian Delph has vowed to give 100% commitment to his new club Everton after expressing his frustration at a lack of Manchester City. The Fiver | Posing for selfies with fixed grins across their faces like the best of them

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! The concept of the pre-season tournament, held in more exotic climes, is not a new one. Back in 1960, new league champions Burnley jumped on a cruise liner and headed across the briny to the USA! USA!! USA!!! Upon arriving, they decided their Brooklyn hotel wasn’t up to standard, and that their dinner of boiled chicken and mashed spuds tasted like muck. They walked out, forcing the organisers of the International Soccer League they’d agreed to play in to find an acceptably swish Manhattan pad quicksmart. Then chairman Bob Lord took umbrage at the brevity of a photoshoot with the mayor of NYC, and complained at the quality of a china vase they’d been presented with as a gift. Finally manager Harry Potts responded to defeat by Kilmarnock with a poetic tirade at the ref, one that earned him a £10 fine and an order to eff off home to our dreary little island and never come back. Fulham ready to bounce back after learning from last season’s mistakes | Dominic Fifield

The chaotic recruitment policy pursued before their brief return to the Premier League has been replaced by sensible planning, headed by their manager, Scott Parker It was as the conversation ticked inexorably towards the hour that Tony Khan issued the closest thing yet to a rallying cry. The Fulham vice-chairman and director of football operations had been talking with the excellent podcast Fulhamish late last month, addressing the issues which had contributed to a traumatic one‑season stay in the top flight and the sense of anticlimax which had accompanied the club’s slump back into the second tier. For all his enthusiasm for social media, the audience felt rare, even bold given the club’s lack of activity up to then in the transfer market. Yet, with additions and a key contract renewal pending, Khan’s outlook had been bullishly optimistic for the campaign ahead. 'I saw my friends die in the street': Mohamed El-Munir's journey from Libya to LAFC

The defender has forged a professional career after leaving the chaos of his homeland. But his thoughts are always with those he has left behind When the Libyan revolution started , Mohamed El-Munir was a 19-year old playing for Al-Ittihad Tripoli. “Nobody expected it,” the Los Angeles FC defender tells the Guardian. “It just happened so fast. We just finished the first half of the season, so we were getting ready to play the second half. The problems started and they said, ‘We’re going to stop the league for a week or 10 days until we solve these problems.’” Chaos quickly ensued . “I had to see many of my friends die in the street,” the 27-year-old says. “If I had to go out, I wouldn’t know if I was going to come back. We didn’t have electricity from 7 o’clock to 12, 1 o’clock. In June or July, it started to be so difficult to find food.” But the people did have weapons, thanks to raids on government armories once the armed forces and the police disintegrated. “You’d even see a ch

Football transfer rumours: Eriksen to replace Pogba at Manchester United?

This gossip must be living in paradise Chinese Super League clubs Beijing Guoan, Jiangsu Suning and Shanghai Shenhua have no end of ambition. They’re banking on the fact that Gareth Bale ’s own horizons have run out. Though to be fair, the offers look pretty fine to us, including benefits such as a luxury pad, lucrative image rights, regular first-class flights back home, and a manager that doesn’t think he’s a complete waste of space. We say go for it. Bale’s departure would allow Real to sign Paul Pogba . What Manchester United then do with their money is a moot point. Spend it on £90m Juventus striker Paulo Dybala , perhaps. Or maybe they’ll go for Christian Eriksen , whose frequent come-and-get-me pleas to nobody in particular, anyone, just anyone, have been met on the continent with thundering indifference. Atlético Madrid were thinking about it, but turns out they’re more interested in James Rodríguez instead. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.the

Southampton continue to invest in youth after Gao Jisheng’s reshuffle

The Chinese businessman has remained in the background since purchasing 80% of the club but the club has recruited shrewdly from across Europe When Gao Jisheng bought 80% of Southampton for £210m in August 2017 the club’s executives did not know what to expect. Would the Chinese businessman be a hands-on presence, dictating policy as some of his compatriots have done from similar positions at English clubs? There was uncertainly and a good deal of waiting. Yet the shake-up did not come and so, for the men on the ground, it remained day-to-day business as usual. The Swansea City midfielder is one of the few Asians playing professionally in this country and he wants to inspire others to do the same There is a word that all Asians hope never to hear but many cannot avoid. The P-word. It came Yan Dhanda’s way when he was very young and playing football with friends in a park near his family home in Tipton, and while the details are sketchy he remembers easily the shocking nature of the abuse. “It was from random people who’d either be playing with me and my friends or against us,” he says. “They’d say things like, ‘he’s a Paki, he’s never going to make it [as a footballer]’. I’ve also heard it a few times since – ‘Paki this, Paki that’, again from random people. But it never affected me. It just made me want to prove those people wrong.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jul/22/yan-dhanda-i-was-racially-abused-as-a-child-but-i-never-let-it-affect-me-swansea-city-asian-football
