Ashley takes second chance to fire Salford to shootout victory over Leeds

A thriller of a cup tie ended with Salford reaching the Carabao Cup third round with a 9-8 victory on penalties, Ossama Ashley proving the hero. The midfielder’s first effort was saved by Karl Darlow to his left but the referee, Oliver Langford, correctly ruled Leeds’ goalkeeper was yards off his line. Take two and Ashley, signed from Colchester this summer, made no mistake, this time blazing home to Darlow’s left, this coming after Jamie Shackleton had hit the 19th kick off Alex Cairns’ bar. Cue pandemonium and a pitch invasion as Salford progressed to round three for the first time having recovered after Pascal Struijk bundled in a free-kick from the substitute Sam Greenwood to cancel out Matt Smith’s opening-half strike. Football transfer rumours: Chelsea to test Brentford’s resolve for Toney?

Today’s fluff is alert and reckless Not content with spending the thick end of £350m in the current transfer window, Chelsea are ready to hose tens of millions more – cough – in the direction of Brentford’s Community Stadium if it means they can get Ivan Toney in return. The England striker is currently suspended from all football activities until January, a ban that apparently won’t preclude him from signing a contract with a different club. The Independent reports that Brentford will hold out for as much as £80m for a star player they’ve barely missed since he began his prolonged spell on the FA’s Naughty Step. Left out of the Tottenham squad that got knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Fulham, Eric Dier could be on the verge of a reunion with his former skipper Harry Kane at Bayern Munich. Spurs have offered the defender to the German champions, while Borussia Dortmund are also believed to be keen on securing his services. Dier has also been offered to Fulham in part exchange

John Herdman must revive a fallen MLS dynasty at Toronto FC

The Englishman is leaving his post with Canada to join the ranks in club football. He will find a team whose best days lie firmly in the past The chase is on for Inter Miami. Victory over the New York Red Bulls in Lionel Messi’s first Major League Soccer match was enough to lift the club off the foot of the Eastern Conference . They have 11 regular season matches left to make up an 11-point difference and qualify for the playoffs. Toronto FC, bottom of the East on a run of 10 consecutive losses, now have the worst record in MLS, along with the Colorado Rapids. It wasn’t meant to be this way. Only last year, Toronto FC were being spoken about as a resurgent force with Lorenzo Insigne, signed from Napoli on a league-record contract, hailed as the most notable transfer in MLS history. Federico Bernardeschi was another statement signing, at least in pre-Messi terms. While Inter Miami’s new stars have prospered, though, TFC’s have flopped. Football transfer rumours: Man Utd eye Gravenberch? Félix to Liverpool?

Today’s tittle-tattle is dancing in the moonlight After deducing that defenders who can defend are useful components of a football team, Pep Guardiola is in search of his next tactical revelation. He’s planning to make Matheus Nunes the latest signing whose success is almost irrelevant because if it fails, he can just buy someone else. Manchester City have submitted an improved £51.5m bid to Wolves for the 25-year-old midfielder. Otherwise, much of today’s chatter takes place across Manchester, where hilarity abounds. With Luke Shaw joining Tyrell Malacia on the injured list, United are in search of a left-back no one else wants to fill space and, if necessary, hinder their play over the next couple of months. For reasons known best to Erik ten Hag, if they’ve a past, so much the better, the shortlist comprising Marcos Alonso – whose lack of pace and defensive nous are attractive though he’s keen to stay at Barcelona; Marc Cucurella , whose general ineptitude could be available on

Football must look at how individuals such as Luis Rubiales acquire absolute power | Suzanne Wrack

Royal Spanish Football Federation officials can stick their heads in the sand but that will not happen without consequence When Héctor Bellerín wrote: “The narcissist never believes they have made a mistake, they are able to lie, manipulate the truth and make the victim guilty in order to retain their power,” he wasn’t writing a “how to retain power” escape manual for Luis Rubiales. Except, you could be forgiven for thinking that’s how it has been taken, on the basis of the tripling down by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in support of its deluded president in the form of an 808-word defence of Rubiales. The extraordinary RFEF statement – which dropped late on Friday night and is headlined “Official Statement of the RFEF in response to Futpro”, the Spanish players’ union – genuinely reads like it is meant to be Rubiales’s “A-ha! Gotcha!” moment. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2023/aug/26/football-womens-worl

Football transfer rumours: Eden Hazard set for Crystal Palace revival?

Today’s fluff is ready to drink from the elixir of life There must be something in the water at Crystal Palace . Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Spurs have found midfield balance, Sean Dyche needs changes and Brighton are still a step ahead of the game The last time Luton visited Stamford Bridge for a league fixture, George HW Bush was US president, Bryan Adams was in the middle of his monster 16-week stay at the top of the charts with (Everything I Do) I Do It For You , and Liverpool had just broken the British transfer record by paying £2.9m for Derby’s Dean Saunders. The record has gone up a touch since August 1991 but again the Hatters visit west London in the wake of a new spending benchmark being set, and the player in question could well be in line for a first start for his new club. Chelsea’s £115m Moisés Caicedo had something of a nightmare debut from the bench against West Ham last weekend, giving away the penalty that clinched things for the Hammers, but Mauricio Pochettino indicated on Thursday he is ready to start . Chelsea have started the season poorly but Sterling’s form offers hope

Chelsea need experience, creativity and goals to ignite their season – and the forward could be the man to do it By Ben McAleer for WhoScored Given the number of incomings and outgoings at Chelsea over the last year, Raheem Sterling has become something of a forgotten man at Stamford Bridge. The 28-year-old only signed from Manchester City last summer but already feels like an old timer. Sterling, the first signing under the new owners, made his Chelsea debut last August in a 1-0 win against Everton. Just three of his 10 teammates from that game are still at the club: Thiago Silva, Reece James and Ben Chilwell. Sterling had a disappointing first season at Chelsea, scoring just six times and providing three assists in the league. It’s no wonder he struggled given the spate of new additions, the increasingly bloated squad and the managerial upheaval at the club – he played under four different head coaches. Few players, if any, covered themselves in any real glory as Chelsea laboured

Bronze and Batlle's embrace signifies most global and connected women’s World Cup | Jonathan Liew

Rise of European superclubs raised the bar to undreamed level with Spain’s devastating show of strength and the US in decline Lucy Bronze and Ona Batlle held each other. One in defeat and one in victory, one with a medal she wanted and one with a medal she did not. But in that moment they were not rivals or adversaries, just Lucy and Ona: friends, soulmates, former Manchester residents, and in very short order teammates at Barcelona. Bronze has been joined by Keira Walsh at Barcelona, who provided eight of Spain’s finalists. Hannah Hampton grew up in Spain and spent part of her childhood in the Villarreal academy. Monaco look revitalised under the smart management of Adi Hütter

The team stuttered badly at the end of last season, even missing out on Europe, but they’ve set the early pace this year By Eric Devin for Get French Football News Monaco winning their first two matches of the season is not a total surprise. But their performances in the 4-2 victory against Clermont on the opening weekend and their 3-0 win against Strasbourg on Sunday suggest their reboot is coming together apace, especially given that other putative European contenders have stumbled out of the blocks. But with Embolo absent and last season’s top scorer Wissam Ben Yedder another year older, they did not seem to

Pep Guardiola has invented another new role, while Fulham are hoping to reinvigorate Raúl Jiménez Nicolas Jackson looks a lovely footballer, an intelligent runner with soft feet, physical prowess and a lively imagination. Football transfer rumours: Marco Verratti to join Manchester United?

This stuff is having a fiesta The transfer window enters its last eleven days – as the powers that be have handily extended it to 1 September, a Friday night. Matildas sign off with defeat as Sweden secure third place at Women’s World Cup

It was meant to end on a high. One final box to tick to cap off the Matildas’ record-breaking World Cup campaign on home soil. But from the first whistle of their third-place playoff game against Sweden it looked unlikely to happen. A first-half penalty by Fridolina Rolfö and a second-half cracker from captain Kosovare Asllani decisively put Australia in fourth place at this tournament. By no means a failure, but not what they wanted. It started as a classy display of possession football by Sweden but progressively descended into chaos as the first half progressed. Sweden dominated early and a masterclass from Asllani and Stina Blackstenius brought Mackenzie Arnold into action within a minute of play. Veteran defender Clare Polkinghorne, in the starting XI due to Alanna Kennedy’s concussion-enforced absence, had lunged with all her weight towards Asllani who was able to easily sidestep her and find Blackstenius in space. Parallel with Alan Shearer and nestled above Harry Kane is the comedian Josh Pugh , a staple of the partially sighted team vying to win the IBSA World Games. “Sir Stanley Matthews is on it, Sir Bobby Charlton, bloody Beckham, it’s just amazing,” says Pugh, who is set to win his 62nd cap on Saturday. “I never get bored of seeing it. If my little boy goes there when he’s 20 and sees his dad’s name … I’m so proud.” England’s partially sighted team are amateurs but prepare as professionally as possible. Lindisfarne to Lioness: Lucy Bronze’s long road to the World Cup final | Louise Taylor

England’s right wing-back had a wild and windswept start to life on Holy Island but is now key for Sarina Wiegman’s side Lucy Bronze’s early childhood was spent on wild, windswept, Holy Island, where her grandmother was the caretaker of Lindisfarne Castle. Given that, in a typical year, 650,000 tourists traverse the tidal causeway separating the island from the north Northumberland mainland, it was an important job. Even as a little girl, England’s future right wing-back swiftly learned that the privilege of living in such a magical, mystical, place involved her family shouldering considerable responsibility. Perhaps it should be no surprise, then, that Bronze, too, grew up to be a custodian. As the most senior Lioness in Sarina Wiegman’s squad, she has long served as a key nurturer of England’s ambition. What the men’s Euros next year can learn from a superb Women’s World Cup | Philipp Lahm

An intoxicating blend of sporting quality and spirit has been on display in Australia and New Zealand I was recently at my foundation’s summer camp where educators train children in exercise, nutrition and personality development. I noticed that the guests regularly looked excitedly at their mobile phones. They wanted to know what the score was. That morning, Germany were playing against South Korea and everyone felt something is at stake here. The Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand has been exciting. The atmosphere in the stadiums has been excellent, millions in Europe and elsewhere are cheering at unusual times of the day. That would not have happened a few years ago: a group stage match captivating people in Germany. Women’s football has become more attractive because it is better. It can now be enjoyed without saying “yes, but”. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2023/aug/19/what-the-mens-euros-next-year-can-l

Trip to Tottenham offers truer test of where Manchester United really stand

A narrow opening win against Wolves was an acceptable start to the season but Erik ten Hag still has plenty to consider Manchester United and Erik ten Hag started the season with a home victory in front of a packed Old Trafford but it was a performance that gave them plenty to ponder rather than a platform. The last campaign began with two defeats and much outcry about whether Ten Hag could turn things around and the atmosphere felt flat on Monday after beating Wolves . It was thoroughly undeserved and slightly more clinical opponents would have been out of sight. A trip to Spurs on Saturday evening should provide a fascinating barometer of where United stand. The way Wolves’ Matheus Cunha glided through a nonexistent midfield is a cause for concern. Casemiro was brought in last summer to provide the steel needed to remove a soft underbelly but he was often left to put out fires alone on Monday, with the new pairing of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount ahead of him. Walsh and Bronze relishing battle with Barcelona teammates in World Cup final

England pair have messaged clubmates throughout tournament ‘They’ve got world-class players but we’re looking forward to it’ Keira Walsh, Lucy Bronze and their Barcelona teammates have been messaging each other throughout the World Cup. The running joke? “We’ll see you in the final.” The draw and results have delivered the punchline: a mouthwatering tie between the European champions England and a technically gifted Spain. “We message before each game saying good luck, and obviously the idea was hopefully we would see each other in the final – but we didn’t actually expect it to happen,” Walsh said. The Knowledge | A deep dive into low possession smash-and-grab thrashings in football

Plus: teams scoring just once and qualifying at World Cups, penalty shootout shutouts and Clough v facial hair Mail us your questions or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU “In their opening game of the League Two season, Sutton beat Notts County 5-1 despite having only 30% possession,” tweets Fishing4Boots. “That works out at 6% of the possession for each goal scored. Has any team ever recorded a lower percentage in a professional match (naturally excluding the likes of that 149-0 protest )?” As this question is really about smash-and-grab thrashings, we’ve imposed an entirely arbitrary restriction: teams must have had less than 40% possession to qualify. That rules out spectacular mismatches, such as England 20-0 Latvia during qualification for this year’s Women’s World Cup. (Since you asked, England had 86% possession, a possession-per-goal figure of 4.3. And no, we couldn’t find possession stats for Australia 31-0 American Samoa .) Matildas hint at bench role for Sam Kerr in World Cup semi-final against England

Australia captain may be deployed as impact substitute again ‘Consistency and chemistry is key,’ says coach Tony Gustavsson Matildas coach Tony Gustavasson has hinted on the eve of Australia’s historic World Cup semi-final clash that star striker Sam Kerr will again be used off the bench against England in Sydney. John O’Brien: from USA World Cup hero to doctor of clinical psychology

The former Ajax midfielder was always attuned to the feelings of his teammates. A move into the world of psychology seemed like a natural step When people recall the 2002 US men’s national team and their run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup , they may remember the quintessential Dos a Cero match. Or Clint Mathis’ surprise mohawk. Or their first game, in which they upset a golden-generation Portugal team 3–2. One of the crucial elements to that US team – indeed, the guy who scored their opening goal of the tournament – was John O’Brien, a skillful and cerebral midfielder from Los Angeles. O’Brien also assisted Mathis’ goal against South Korea with a ridiculously accurate chip, and played a beautiful, Pirlo-esque pass to set up Landon Donovan’s insurance goal that buried Mexico in the round of 16. Mary Fowler: creative maestro’s work not done yet with England up next for Matildas | Kieran Pender

Still just 20 years old, the Australia forward has risen to the occasion at this Women’s World Cup but her biggest test awaits in the semi-final When Mary Fowler stepped up to take a penalty on Saturday, the Matildas’ quarter-final was on a knife-edge, with France holding a slight advantage. Fowler was taking Australia’s fourth penalty – had she missed, the French would take a critical advantage into the final pair of attempts. The pressure on the shoulders of the 20-year-old could not have been greater, in her first shootout in competitive football. Fowler walked slowly to the mark and stared down France goalkeeper Solène Durand. She bounced the ball like a basketballer, once, twice. The Manchester City player walked a few steps backwards before pausing to draw in a deep breath. She exhaled – this was it. A step forward, then another – almost prancing. And then she smashed the ball low and hard towards the left corner. Durand went the wrong way, but she never had any chance. It was

From the star-studded Pro League to golf, F1 and cricket, the kingdom’s strategy is as cynically ambitious as it is controversial The scope of Saudi Arabian ambition in global sport is so broad as to be dizzying, but to get a sense of how it works you can look at the history of one of the country’s first investments, in the antics of professional wrestling. It’s a goodbye that has been coming – the truth is he had outgrown Spurs some seasons ago Not long after the end of last Sunday’s home friendly against Shakhtar Donetsk, Harry Kane emerged from the tunnel alone and walked to all four corners of the ground to applaud the crowd. He was received as he always is. A club legend. One of our own. If this was the end, it was a near-perfect send‑off. Kane had scored four goals in the 5-1 victory. Of course he had. Who else was going to score them? Last season the rest of the team could barely identify the opposition net, let alone find it. I wasn’t there to say goodbye. Pre-season friendlies aren’t my bag and I was away on holiday. But then I’d already made my farewells. In our hearts, every fan knew this moment was coming. Kane had only one year left on his contract and was in no hurry to renew. So this was the last chance for Daniel Levy to cash in on his prize £100m asset. Hormones and hugging strangers: how new football season brings fresh hope | Jason Stockwood

Optimism replaces stress over the summer and League Two clubs can draw inspiration from Carlisle and Luton As the new football season begins (and at the risk of jeopardising my marriage) I am reminded of the early days of parenthood. From an evolutionary standpoint, it is vital to forget the challenging first few months when sleepless nights are coupled with a partner constantly looking at you with an expression somewhere between contempt and disgust. During childbirth, there are a few illusory days of bliss when the body releases endorphins and oxytocin. Endorphins, often referred to as “feelgood” hormones, are released in response to various stimuli, including physical pain, stress and heightened emotions. Oxytocin, often called the “bonding hormone” or “love hormone”, contributes to the overall experience of childbirth and the bonding between mother and baby. These hormonal responses play a crucial role in supporting the birthing process, making the experience and pain involved mo

Speed, skill and scoring: Caitlin Foord rises to Women’s World Cup challenge | Kieran Pender

For all the talk in recent weeks of the Matildas missing Sam Kerr, another of the world’s best attackers has been playing all along It was a perfect case study in the brilliance of Caitlin Foord. When the Matildas forward gained possession midway through the first half against Denmark night, she was deep in her own team’s half. This would have come as no surprise to her colleagues, who regularly hail Foord’s defensive work ethic. The forward quickly dispatched a crisp pass to Mary Fowler. And then she took off. Foord has variety in her attacking arsenal. She can outwit defenders as she runs at them with the ball; she can pass her way through most midfields. But Foord is at her blistering best on the counter-attack, when she launches herself like a rocket down the left flank. It is the first time in the tournament’s history that USA have been eliminated at this early a stage. Watford blow away abject QPR with four-goal demolition job in first half

The opening weekend of the season is meant to be a time of universal optimism, when fans can bask in the sunshine and dream about a campaign which is yet to take shape. This game was set to a backdrop of spitting drizzle and granite skies, a cold dose of reality before a ball had even been kicked. Both Watford and QPR arrived at Vicarage Road in a fog of unknowns, with fans having good reason to be cautious with their expectations. After another underwhelming season of managerial Russian roulette and a summer which marked the departures of João Pedro and Ismaïla Sarr, two of their best performers, the hosts were hoping for a new dawn under Valérien Ismaël. ‘That’s our job’: Matildas ready to step up if Denmark match goes to penalties

Australia will need to banish the demons of their 2019 Women’s World Cup nightmare in any knockout game shootout There is nothing quite like the pressure of a penalty shootout in the knockout phase of the World Cup. The Matildas know that all too well. Four years ago, on a warm summer’s evening not far from the French Mediterranean coastline, Australia’s encounter with Norway had finished level after 120 minutes. It was almost midnight, and the humid air inside the Stade de Nice was laden with tension. The Norwegians won the coin toss to shoot first. The team’s No 10, Caroline Graham Hansen, stepped up to the mark, facing down Matildas veteran Lydia Williams. Graham Hansen held the ball for what felt like an eternity, while Williams moved slowly from side to side, just 11 metres of grass behind them.
