Quipping Paul Pogba underlines rift with Mourinho after West Ham defeat | Jacob Steinberg

Midfielder’s words failed to disguise discord at Manchester United after he was substituted in 70th minute Paul Pogba was the last Manchester United player out of the away dressing room at the London Stadium. The Frenchman was smiling and for a tantalising moment it seemed that he was going to oblige when a group of hopeful journalists asked for a quick chat. Yet after turning to see who was calling his name, Pogba shook his head, laughed and posed a question of his own: “You want me dead?” Point taken. With José Mourinho already in his seat on the team bus, Pogba’s decision not to delay the journey back to Manchester was probably for the best. He chose to keep walking rather than add more fuel to the fire threatening to scorch United’s season. At the end of an eventful week during which Mourinho told Pogba that he would never captain United again and shared a frosty exchange with the £89m midfielder during training, it felt like a time to close ranks. Virgil van Dijk backs struggling Mohamed Salah to regain form for Liverpool

• Salah and Henderson frustrated at being subbed • Jürgen Klopp praises Daniel Sturridge’s start to season Virgil van Dijk has warned his Liverpool teammates they will have to accept being substituted or sitting out games altogether given the greater squad depth at Anfield, after Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson showed their frustration at being withdrawn during the draw with Chelsea on Saturday. Salah, in particular, endured a frustrating return to Stamford Bridge and was taken off shortly after the hour with the visitors still trailing to Eden Hazard’s first-half goal. While there is no underlying concern at the Egyptian’s form – he boasts three goals in nine club appearances to date this term – among the coaching staff, the reigning player of the year is clearly still easing his way into the campaign, with Jürgen Klopp willing to turn to Daniel Sturridge or Xherdan Shaqiri to freshen up the side’s approach. Sam Vokes nods rejuvenated Burnley to victory over toothless Cardiff

These are still early days, yet it is already shaping up to be one of those seasons that turns into a slog for Cardiff City. Burnley at home felt like a welcome fixture on the face of it, especially on the back of conceding 12 goals against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, but there is no respite for Neil Warnock’s team, who fell to a fourth successive defeat that leaves them joint bottom of the Premier League. Johann Berg Gudmundsson did the damage, scoring Burnley’s first and setting up the winner for Sam Vokes on an afternoon when Cardiff carried the greater threat and will feel that the very least they deserved was a point. Josh Murphy’s fine equaliser on the hour-mark should have been the springboard for a positive result for the Welsh club but some poor defending allowed Burnley to regain the lead through Vokes. Manchester City score own goal from opposition half in Women's Super League – video

Manchester City come back from freakish own goal to beat Birmingham

• Birmingham City 2-3 Manchester City • Abbie McManus finds own net from 50 yards After going 2-0 down – including a comedic own goal inside 10 minutes – Nick Cushing’s Manchester City clawed their way back with three second-half goals to earn three points, and the manager some much needed breathing room. Three games into the season, his future at Manchester City was already being questioned. After surprisingly finishing last season empty-handed and having been knocked out of the Champions League midweek, outclassed by the Spanish champions Atlético Madrid, Cushing’s team needed a win to settle nerves. Except Damson Park is not an easy place to visit. Olivier Giroud looks the part but Chelsea would welcome a goal or two | Jonathan Wilson

A centre-forward who works hard but doesn’t score is still a costly luxury for any club There was a moment in Maurizio Sarri’s post‑match press conference on Saturday when, having eulogised Eden Hazard and spoken of the way he has challenged him to score 40 goals this season, the Chelsea manager was asked about the danger of being dependent on one player. Pedro and Willian, he replied, could score 10. Which is fair. Pedro has three league goals this season and Willian one. There is no reason at all why one, or both, couldn’t get up to double figures in all competitions (which was, Sarri had stressed, what he was talking about; he was not anticipating Hazard scoring 40 in the league). But what he didn’t say seemed just as revealing. How many, you wonder, does he think Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata will muster this season? The farcical case of Virtus Entella: a 'ghost' club without a league to play in

Italy’s Serie B was plunged into chaos by three pre-season bankruptcies and Entella, who had hoped to profit, now find themselves in limbo between the second and third tiers On Tuesday morning Gabriel Cleur and the rest of the Virtus Entella players, coaches and staff will set out on an away trip that feels like a last resort. At the end of the 290-mile journey from Chiavari, their home town in Liguria, to Rome, they will alight at the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) and will not leave until they have received some answers. They plan a form of sit-in protest and the crux of their complaint only scratches the surface of a shambolic state of affairs that has left Italy’s lower leagues in turmoil. Why, they want to know, do they not have a division to play in when the season is already six weeks old? “Never in my life did I think I’d be directly involved in a situation like this,” says Cleur, a 20-year-old full-back from Australia. Two weeks ago he was sent off in Entella’s fi

Didier Deschamps: ‘The biggest victories can lead to the greatest foolishness’

Having led France to World Cup glory and won Fifa’s coach of the year award, Didier Deschamps is at the top of his game. But as he knows only too well, the big challenge will be staying there The crescendo for a team that finds itself growing as it hurdles the different stages of a tournament usually hits a high note at which everything suddenly seems incandescent with possibility. For France at the World Cup that came 57 minutes into their last-16 match in Kazan . Until that moment, Les Bleus had felt – perhaps even to themselves – like a work in progress. They had been effective but uninspiring in the group stage, their progress accompanied by rumblings from the media and public about how the team could eke more out of their talent. Then Benjamin Pavard set himself and struck a piercing volley to equalise against Argentina. He careered into a group embrace with his teammates in a state of euphoric disbelief. Everything felt instantly transformed. Didier Deschamps did not need even

Time for Southgate to end waiting game and give Phil Foden a chance | Daniel Taylor

Gareth Southgate has been hoping Phil Foden would get more action at Manchester City but that will not happen soon so why not call him up for England now, with Euro 2020 in mind? Phil Foden has left enough positive impressions in the formative stages of his career that I hope it will not come across as too po-faced to ask whether this supremely talented footballer – and perhaps some of the people around him – can avoid getting too carried away now he is starting to benefit from the trappings of his industry. That is not meant to sound impertinent but perhaps you saw the photograph of Foden that was circulated via Instagram on his 18th birthday. Can you imagine the fuss if, say, Raheem Sterling had posed for that kind of picture? Where you might ordinarily expect a few candles, Foden’s birthday cake was decorated with iced £50 banknotes. Loads of them, spilling out of a Gucci wallet that was also made of icing sugar, with a level of detail that suggested you wouldn’t find this kind of

Didier Deschamps: ‘Media image of Paul Pogba doesn’t correspond to who he is‘

• France coach says midfielder central figure in his dressing room • Pogba told he will not captain Manchester United again Didier Deschamps has defended Paul Pogba’s leadership qualities during a week when he was told by José Mourinho that he would never captain Manchester United again . The France manager was full of praise for the way Pogba became a central figure in the dressing room during the World Cup and a strong influence on the group. “He has taken many things upon himself. He has been a leader,” Deschamps said. “Each time he had to talk and express himself it was always very positive. It’s the words he uses and the atmosphere and feeling that comes across. He is not the only one but he is one of the leaders who took it upon himself because the group needed it. Gareth Bale injured as Real and Atlético fail to draw blood in Madrid derby

For all the talent on the pitch, in the end it was the men wearing gloves who decided the derby. For the sixth successive year, Atlético Madrid left the Santiago Bernabéu unbeaten in the league. Jan Oblak and Thibaut Courtois departed undefeated too: there were three one-on-ones, two for the visitors, one for the home side, but these two goalkeepers, arguably the finest on the planet, stood tall. And so a game that Atlético edged in the first half and Real edged in the second, Gareth Bale having been withdrawn injured at half-time, ended even. Atlético started brightly too, Saúl Ñíguez bringing a save from Courtois after just two minutes and Antoine Griezmann’s overhead kick slicing wide three minutes later. The Frenchman probably should have put Atlético ahead on 18 minutes. Released by Koke, dashing through on the left behind the Madrid defence, he ran into the area, where Courtois came to meet him. With the outside of his left foot Griezmann tried to flick the ball beyond the Belgi

Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge hits back after Eden Hazard’s Chelsea strike

There were two minutes of normal time remaining when Daniel Sturridge, new to the game, let fly with an elegant swish of his left foot. Liverpool had given everything to finding an equaliser but, until that moment, it had begun to seem futile. Sturridge’s goal was a beauty and the body language of Jürgen Klopp’s players at the final whistle made it clear they could live with giving up their immaculate run of results in the Premier League. Nobody could argue that it was undeserved bearing in mind the number of chances they passed up before Sturridge, an 86th-minute substitute, deceived Kepa with the swerve and trajectory of a high, angled shot. Mohamed Salah, one of the repeat offenders, had endured such an exasperating evening he was replaced just before the midway point of the second half. Manchester City outclass Brighton with sublime Sergio Agüero finish

Manchester City’s sixth Premier League victory of the season lifted them to the top of the table, for a couple of hours at least, and was decorated by a sublime Sergio Agüero goal. Midway through the second half the striker traded passes with David Silva near the centre circle and then slalomed towards goal with some soft shoe-shuffle skill that included nutmegging Lewis Dunk before he found Raheem Sterling to his left. The No 7 twisted and sent the ball back to the Argentinian who was never going to miss from eight yards out, scoring a fifth of his campaign. Harry Maguire seals routine win for Leicester over troubled Newcastle

At the end of a day filled with tentative takeover talk and protests against Mike Ashley’s stewardship of Newcastle United, Rafael Benítez’s limited, lacklustre side bore the wearily familiar look of strong relegation candidates. Arsenal’s Mesut Özil completes slick move to sink Watford

Caught up in the emotion of Premier League tension, as a match that hung in the balance was suddenly seized, Unai Emery leaped about and shook his fists on the sidelines. This one, compared to the winning sequence that preceeded it, seemed to count that little bit more, to mean something that bit deeper. Once Mesut Özil tapped in Arsenal’s second goal and the result swung in their favour, Emery could allow himself to wonder whether the new ideas are slowly beginning to fall into place. Seven successive wins is a helpful statistic, but Emery was as impressed to see how Arsenal mastered their most difficult test since the first week of the season when they lost to both Manchester City and Chelsea. This was a true test of their mettle, with Watford starting the day ahead of them in the Premier League table thanks to their well-organised ambition, and threatening to take all the points until Arsenal scored twice in three high energy minutes in the late summer sun. Harry Kane scores double as Tottenham send Huddersfield bottom of table

A sylvan setting makes the John Smith’s stadium one of the most pleasant places to spend an autumnal Saturday afternoon, the appetite for Premier League football among proud and impassioned supporters remains undimmed. Yet with Huddersfield still bottom of the table and now going into October without a win, the script is badly in need of a change. Tottenham were 4-0 winners in this fixture last season and the home side were lucky the scoreline had not reached similar proportions by half-time. The pattern of the game was established early on, with Huddersfield working the ball diligently around midfield without finding any real focus to their attacks, and Spurs doing exactly the opposite, keeping their defensive shape and relying on the pace of their tricky front three to make inroads when given the chance. Gylfi Sigurdsson makes amends to fire Everton towards victory over Fulham

With his forwards faltering Marco Silva was in urgent need of goals from elsewhere to give Everton their second Premier League win of the season. Gylfi Sigurdsson chose an ideal time to take the responsibility. The club’s £45m record signing struck twice as Fulham were punished for a profligate performance at Goodison Park. It took the second-half introduction of Cenk Tosun for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to improve Everton’s potency and their performance level also increased following an ineffective first half. The Turkey international also scored as Everton recorded their biggest win under Silva and the first clean sheet of the manager’s short reign. For Slavisa Jokanovic, this was another reminder of the fine margins in the Premier League. His team should have departed at half-time with the lead. They exited at full-time with a heavy beating. Ivan Cavaleiro’s goal sets Wolves on the way to win over Southampton

Wolves, excited but certainly not daunted at being back in the Premier League, staged a firework display before this match but the game itself was a damp squib until the 79th minute, when Ivan Cavaleiro blasted in the opening goal. The Portuguese midfielder’s celebration was befitting of a man making his first league appearance of the season following a back injury, and the festivities soon intensified, as Jonathan Castro Otto added a second goal in the 86th minute. For most of the game this ending seemed unlikely due to a lack of sharpness up front. There is something quite polite about these teams, both well-mannered in their play, easy on the eye and a little toothless. Wolves, in particular, have had spectators cooing this season thanks to their cultured build-ups but they, like Southampton, came into this game cursing an inability to turn chances into goals often enough. Wolves manager Nuno Espírito Santo insisted beforehand that it was just a matter of time before his team incre

Chelsea rediscover energy and optimism under Maurizio Sarri

Italian head coach has overseen eye-catching start – and with Eden Hazard in the form of his life positivity abounds at Stamford Bridge Almost 11 weeks into his stint in charge, Maurizio Sarri is still stumped. The Italian would appear to have overseen an eye-catching start. Chelsea nestle third in the table behind two more fancied teams, and inflicted a first wound of the season upon the leaders, Liverpool , in the Carabao Cup before Saturday’s collision between the sides at Stamford Bridge. The smoothness of the tactical transition has surprised the head coach and rival managers, while Eden Hazard is playing with the vim and vigour that propelled them to the title in 2015 and 2017. The Belgian is in the form of his life and positivity abounds, with the atmosphere a throwback to the energy and optimism that fuelled those last two successful pursuits of the Premier League. And yet, with those triumphs in mind, Sarri is perplexed as to why he is even in situ. “The history of this club

Liverpool’s Alisson: ‘My saves are not to show off for the camera’

Liverpool’s £65m goalkeeper goes up against Chelsea’s £71.6m Kepa Arrizabalaga on Saturday but the Brazilian is not bothered about his price tag and happy with his move to Anfield Absurd and crazy are the words Alisson chooses to describe his £65m transfer fee . In the end the Brazilian was the most expensive goalkeeper on the planet for all of 20 days before Chelsea invested an extra £6.6m in Kepa Arrizabalaga , ensuring there will be £136.6m worth of talent between the posts at Stamford Bridge when the title contenders renew hostilities on Saturday. Alisson’s description of his price tag does not reflect unease, however. As the younger brother of a professional goalkeeper, the son of parents who kept goal for the works football team and the school handball team and the great-grandson of an amateur league goalkeeper in his hometown of Novo Hamburgo, there is satisfaction at what this summer’s transfer market symbolises for his trade. It is the price of turning hope into expectation at

Eden Hazard and the virtue of staying put rather than going for the sake of it | Barney Ronay

Some feel it is just a matter of time before the Belgian leaves Chelsea for Spain but perhaps he realises he may never be quite so brilliant anywhere else Almost all of the world’s problems, from daily irritations to long-term catastrophe models, are caused by people doing things. It’s not hard to trace the line of cause and effect. Growth, progress, reaching out, growing as a person: these are invariably the areas where things start to go awry, distractions from the safety of idleness, entropy and generally not doing much. This is not a new idea. The Ten Commandments in the book of Exodus aren’t really commandments in the active sense. They’re prohibitions, warnings against the ancient menace of doing things. As much as you might want to hold an adulterous ass-coveting party in the house of your recently murdered neighbour, the Bible explicitly forbids all of these activities. And for me, Clive, rightly so. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.c

After an inauspicious start – reflected in the joint lowest points return of any Everton manager from their first six league games since 1956 – Marco Silva needs a result that supports talk of positive performances against the Premier League newcomers. Everton have lost their past two matches and their weaknesses in defence and attack were exposed again at Arsenal last weekend. Fulham have had a difficult start on the road, losing at Tottenham and Manchester City, and will give a late fitness test to defender Alfie Mawson. Leaders Liverpool are at Chelsea for the late game so Manchester City have a chance to leapfrog them – for a few hours, at least. Given how City hammered Cardiff 5-0 on the road in their last league outing Pep Guardiola’s side will surely relish a return home against a Brighton side with 11 fewer points. Pep Guardiola ticks off Benjamin Mendy for reporting late after night at boxing

• Manchester City defender was late for treatment on injury • Kevin De Bruyne set to return to training in week or so Pep Guardiola has had words with Benjamin Mendy after the Manchester City defender reported late for treatment on Sunday having posted pictures of himself at the boxing at Wembley the previous night. City’s manager denied there was any disciplinary problem with Mendy, who has a foot injury, but said: “He arrived late, and that shouldn’t happen but it does sometimes. He should be here on time and he knows it. I spoke with him but it is not a problem with his physical condition. Chelsea v Liverpool: match preview

Chelsea’s League Cup win at Anfield in midweek checked Liverpool’s perfect start to the season, but this will be the clash that really counts. Liverpool must fine a way to quell Eden Hazard, or trust in their own formidable front three’s ability to infiltrate and exploit a Chelsea back-line that has, at times, felt rather jittery this term. Maurizio Sarri believes his own side are at least a year behind Jürgen Klopp’s in terms of their development. But, in a one off match, that chasm may not gape quite so wide. Fulham’s Denis Odoi: ‘At 16 they told me I wouldn’t become a footballer’

The defender discusses the horror of his play-off final red card, being naughtier than Dries Mertens at school and how his love of coffee may lead him to open a London cafe “I was thinking I would need to call my agent and look for a new club,” Denis Odoi says as he remembers the stress of watching the closing stages of last season’s Championship play-off final in Fulham’s dressing room at Wembley. Odoi had been reduced to the role of spectator following his red card for a foul on Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and all he could do was pray that his teammates would bail him out. They were the longest 20 minutes of his life. Alone in his thoughts, it occurred to the Belgian that he was in danger of going from hero to zero. Two weeks after scoring Fulham’s winner in the semi-final against Derby County, his season was on the verge of ending in despair. Jon Smith: football’s ‘original super-agent’ and a plan to bring fans on board

Diego Maradona’s former representative is hoping to open an agency in which supporters hold a stake The location Jon Smith suggests for this interview is a hotel a mile or so north of Cockfosters. On emerging from the very end of the Piccadilly tube line, there are hedgerows and massive houses one after another, the homes of Premier League footballers among others. After a while, the pavement comes to an end but the hotel is still not in sight. Then, from behind a row of trees, a helicopter takes to the air. Oh, it must be in there then. Smith, using air commas, which he acknowledges using as he does so (“Who does that?”), calls himself football’s “original super-agent”. At different times the representative of Diego Maradona, the entire England football team and James Beattie, Smith – 65 going on 45 – has witnessed the Premier League explosion from the inside. In recent years he has stepped back from the frontline, to act more as an adviser to people keen to invest in the game. Thes

The Fiver | An ongoing contempt for the ticket-buying public that is nothing new

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now ! Having been trialled and subsequently rolled out in assorted football competitions around the globe for well over a year now, VAR has proved an undeniable success. Introduced to eliminate tedious bickering over questionable decisions made (or not made) by football referees, it has got people bickering even more tediously over questionable decisions made (or not made) by VAR instead. Like the match officials it was brought in to assist, VAR has proved far from infallible but tends to get considerably more decisions right than wrong. Its main drawback seems to revolve around the state of less-than-blissful ignorance in which match-going fans are left during the sometimes lengthy breaks in play when those decisions are being made. Breaks when – like The Fiver watching a David Lynch boxset – they are left with little or no clue what the hell is going on. Sarri’s Chelsea are match for Liverpool but Kanté poses midfield puzzle | Jonathan Wilson

Saturday’s league meeting offers another chance to see two sides with similar setups but Jorginho’s arrival has pushed N’Golo Kanté out of his comfort zone Press against press, 4-3-3 against 4-3-3, wide forwards who cut in against wide forwards who cut in, attacking full-back against attacking full-back: Chelsea against Liverpool on Saturday, Maurizio Sarri against Jürgen Klopp, will be a meeting of two very similar conceptions of football. Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup meeting , even with significantly altered line-ups, highlighted those similarities, and also the fact that the main difference lies in midfield. His stare was wild, the eyes rheumier than we have seen them before. He looked, frankly, as if he needed a good night’s sleep. Sam Allardyce once noted how David Moyes had aged 10 years at Manchester United and it is starting to feel as if the same could be said of the current manager. OK, it’s a football game, not a fashion parade, but if you remember the days when the younger Mourinho turned up looking so debonair, with his tailored suits and immaculately coiffured hair, it was quite something to see him, frazzled, in his blue hoodie and white T-shirt, looking more like a bloke from Gogglebox than the guy who once seemed to hold the keys to the football universe. Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now ! On the day after Derby County became the latest in an increasingly long line of teams to take the game to Manchester United and outplay them at Old Trafford, you might expect at least some of the media focus to be on the team of fearless young go-getters assembled by managerial novice Frank Lampard, Harry Wilson’s terrific second-half free-kick or the uninterrupted series of 15 excellent spot-kicks we all just knew would come to an abrupt end as soon as Phil Jones strode forward from the halfway line exuding all the confidence and swagger of a condemned man shuffling towards the gallows. As is the way of the football world however, once the trapdoor opened under United, Derby’s stirring victory has been largely overlooked in favour of the latest row with one of his charges in which José Mourinho finds himself embroiled. West Ham to complain to TalkSport over Danny Murphy remarks on Declan Rice

• Murphy said it was ‘ridiculous’ Rice did not have new contract • Rice’s agent, Neil Fewings, has also represented Murphy West Ham are planning to complain to TalkSport about criticism from Danny Murphy regarding their handling of contract negotiations with Declan Rice after learning that Rice’s agent has also represented Murphy. Murphy argued that it was “ridiculous” that West Ham were yet to reward Rice’s impressive performances with a new contract when he appeared on Jim White’s radio show on Monday and warned that the club risked losing their brightest young talent if the matter were not resolved soon. The 19-year-old has entered the final two years of his deal and rejected an offer worth around £15,000 a week in the summer. Football sexual-abuse scandal review may be delayed for over a year

• Jailed coach Barry Bennell may face further charges • Retrial of Bob Higgins another reason for inquiry hold up The independent review into football’s sexual-abuse scandal is to be delayed by potentially longer than a year because of the criminal trials that are approaching and the possibility of Barry Bennell facing more charges for preying on young boys from the junior systems of Crewe Alexandra and Manchester City. Clive Sheldon, the QC appointed in December 2016 to oversee the inquiry, had originally intended to publish his report in the coming week, having spent the previous 21 months investigating what the Football Association chairman, Greg Clarke, has described as the biggest scandal in the history of the sport. Which football clubs have manufactured their own kits? | The Knowledge

Plus: scoring past the same goalkeeper in consecutive games for club and country, most different scorers to start a season and cricket umpires. Mail us or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU “Random kit manufacturing question,” begins Michael Pilcher. “Since Paul Scally took over Gillingham in 1995, aside from a stint when Uhlsport/Vandanel made them from 2005-2014, our shirts have been made in-house by ‘Gills Leisure’/‘GFC’/‘GFC Leisure’. Are Gillingham the only club that manufacture their own kits in the EFL? How far down do you have to go before you find another club that designs and makes their kits under an ‘own brand’? Even our Kent non-league neighbours Maidstone and Dover use established kit brands (Dover were Nike last season). ” The short answer is: lots. We’ll let our readers offer a more thorough response, starting with a couple of current ones, Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday, with the clubs’ respective owners, Steve Lansdown and Dejphon Chansiri, influential. “Bristol Sport h

Sergi Canós: ‘Liverpool offered me five more years but I wanted to be important’

Brentford’s former Barcelona graduate seems to have found a spiritual home at Griffin Park and is looking forward to taking on Arsenal in the Carabao Cup After reeling off a long list of La Masia alumni, Sergi Canós smiles before puffing his cheeks as he recalls life inside the goldfish bowl of Barcelona’s famed talent factory, having joined aged 13. “It was when [Pep] Guardiola won six trophies in a season,” he says. “It was amazing because La Masia became ‘Wow, La Masia’. And we were living in La Masia. I laugh now but we used to look out of the windows of the rooms and you would see the tourist bus. Everyone was taking photos because it became where Messi used to live, where Iniesta used to live, Busquets, Piqué, Puyol, Valdés.” These days, Canós plays for a team some dub the Barcelona of the Championship: Brentford. The winger dismisses such a brazen comparison but admits there are shades of his Spanish schooling in Dean Smith’s swaggering side, who visit Arsenal in the Carabao

Qatar World Cup workers still exploited, says Amnesty report

Charity says promised government reforms to ‘kafala’ system have not taken place Migrant workers building infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup and other big projects in Qatar are still suffering exploitation and severe human rights violations despite promised government reforms, according to a highly critical report by Amnesty International. The report names an engineering company, Mercury MENA, which it says left almost 80 workers from Nepal, India and the Philippines stranded and unpaid for months in Qatar. Amnesty accuses the company of using the kafala structure – which it describes as Qatar’s notorious sponsorship system that ties employees to a single employer – to exploit scores of migrant workers.
