The Fiver | A little pushback against the punditocracy's blowhardista wing

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! England played very well last week against San Marino, for 45 minutes , and were efficient if not exactly effervescent against Albania at the weekend. Nothing to worry about there, although exactly how much use it is to anyone in a world where Belgium’s second string are capable of walking in eight against Belarus, celebrating their goals with little more than an insouciant shrug, is a moot point. Belgium’s haul was one of several eye-catching scorelines in the Human Rights World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday, along with Gibraltar 0-0 Netherlands after 40 minutes and Luxembourg 1-0 Portugal after 44. If we could have blown the final whistle there and then, sat back, got out the popcorn and immersed ourselves in the lovely fallout, we would have, promise you. The lost art of tracking down sports scores: from shop loitering to Teletext

It is impossible to avoid results these days, but there was a time when fans had to think creatively to keep up to date By Steven Pye for That 1980s Sports Blog “I wonder what the latest score is in the Old Firm derby,” I thought to myself during walk No 321 of lockdown. Twenty seconds later I had my answer. Reaching for my phone, a few thumb presses gave me all the information I needed. I could have even checked in on the results from the Luxembourg National Division if I was that way inclined. I now take this kind of thing for granted but there was a time when discovering the latest score in a sporting fixture was not quite as simple as this. Never mind “look away now if you don’t want to know the score”. A few decades ago, trying to track down the results could be a long and drawn out affair. Trevoh Chalobah: 'To beat PSG was unbelievable – I had to mark Neymar'

Chelsea player on loan at Lorient discusses tackling Brazil great, what he learned at Ipswich and a picture with Lampard he loves “It was an unbelievable experience,” Trevoh Chalobah says as he remembers coming off the bench to help Lorient record a famous victory over Paris Saint-Germain in January. “Being on the same pitch as Ángel Di María, Neymar, Kylian Mbappé – I’d been watching this team play in the Champions League. To beat them was unbelievable.” Chalobah had entered at half-time, stepping into midfield and setting his sights on stopping the superstars in PSG’s attack. 'We’re not little kids': leading agents ready for war with Fifa over new rules

Mino Raiola and Jonathan Barnett, both senior members of the Football Forum, are threatening action over proposed changes “Fifa will not exist in 10 years’ time,” predicted Mino Raiola at the World Football Summit in November. Best known for representing Erling Haaland, Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Matthijs de Ligt, the 53-year-old was responding in typically bombastic fashion to confirmation a fortnight earlier that football’s governing body was pressing ahead with a raft of controversial new regulations for agents . Perhaps the most contentious is Fifa’s intention to introduce a cap that would limit agents of the selling club to 10% of the transfer fee, and agents of the buying club to 3% of the fee. The regulations, scheduled to take effect in January 2022 having entered a third and final “consultation process” in November that is continuing, would also force agents to become licensed and undergo an exam conducted by Fifa, and make all transactions public, allowing supporter

And what’s the biggest deficit 10 men have overcome to win?” We haven’t been able to top Bayern’s 4-0 win, but there are still plenty of examples worth mentioning of 10 men overcoming 11. Let’s start at Stamford Bridge in April 2006. The leaders and champions Chelsea had dropped five points in the previous three games and were in danger of being caught by Manchester United. They were in even more trouble when, after going a goal down, they had Maniche sent off. The response was awesome. With Didier Drogba at his most unplayable, Chelsea’s 10 men battered West Ham 4-1 , and went on to win the title at a canter. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.th

Agüero has been jaw-dropping in a rather more acceptable way, with his 257 goals in 384 matches, and while he’s not quite as loveable or relatable as the equally legendary Shaun Goater, The Fiver will concede that he’s probably, on balance, a little bit better. Which Premier League clubs have the hardest and easiest run-ins?

An analysis of the remaining 90 fixtures shows that Liverpool and Newcastle fans have reasons for optimism By Ben McAleer for WhoScored With the international break almost over, we are approaching the business end of the season. Manchester City have a 14-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, so we will not be treated to a title race over the next two months. However, the battles to finish in the top four and to avoid relegation are likely to go to the wire. With that in mind, we at WhoScored have analysed the 90 remaining games of the season and tried to illustrate the difficulty of each team’s run-in. To get an idea of the task facing each team in their remaining games, we used our rating of their performances in home games and away games this season. Throughout the season, we calculate a rating for each team based on how they play in every game. Every event of importance in a game is taken into account, with a positive or negative effect on ratings weighted in relati

Sergio Agüero has been far more than a great goalscorer for Manchester City | Jonathan Wilson

Striker’s numbers are astonishing and QPR goal is legendary but he has also done more than anyone to change club’s image Sergio Agüero has scored 181 league goals for Manchester City, but one of them would have been sufficient to make him a legend. Whatever else Agüero had done in his career, his strike on the final day of the 2011-12 season, running on to receive Mario Balotelli’s only assist of the season before, with glorious inevitability, lashing his shot past Paddy Kenny, would have written his name in golden letters in the history of the club. There was, though, quite a lot else besides. But let’s begin with that injury-time strike at the end of his first season at the Etihad, a goal that consecrated a new era of English football. Praise the awareness, praise the movement, praise his earlier instruction to Balotelli, praise the shot, but most of all praise the calmness in that moment, when a season came down to a single kick, he never looked like doubting himself. And this fo

'I felt degraded': Ram Marwa on being racially abused as a young footballer

A nasty comment had a lasting impact on the one-time prospect but he has reason to believe things will be better for his son Ram Marwa is recounting the time he was racially abused. It occurred during his days as a footballer and, understandably, talking about it is difficult. He is nervous, edgy, upset, but he tells the tale and, having done so, makes a request – that the person involved and the club where it took place are kept anonymous. He is prepared to open old wounds but there is no desire to shame the perpetrator. The request is accepted and so, ultimately, it boils down to this: one day, when Marwa was a relatively young player and in a changing room minding his own business, a coach said to him: “Shouldn’t your family own a corner shop?” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/mar/29/i-felt-degraded-ram-marwa-on-being-racially-abused-as-a-young-footballer

Women's Super League: talking points from the weekend's action

It has been a landmark week for Chelsea and Manchester United while Arsenal appear to have found themselves again Every Women’s Super League game over the weekend was shown live, with kick-offs staggered to allow each one to get its share of attention. Make no mistake, that share is growing. Last week the WSL’s new £8m-a-season, three-year broadcasting deal with Sky and the BBC was announced, another huge step forward for the league. BT Sport might have been outbid for the new contract, but it is important to acknowledge the contribution they have made by taking the rights when nobody else wanted them, investing heavily, and establishing demand for coverage of domestic women’s football to the point where those rights are now hotly contested. Five years ago you would have struggled to find any domestic games on television, and now they are regularly going to be on the BBC’s main channels. San Marino don’t need derision of fans suffering delusions of grandeur | Barry Glendenning

Playing in a pre-qualifying league with fellow minnows would help them to improve and also benefit more established teams By no means the first football grandee to assert that playing international cannon fodder such as San Marino ought to be beneath the England team, Gary Lineker was the most recent and high profile. During the Wembley rout on Thursday , the man who served his country with so much distinction mused aloud on social media, tweeting: “Surely we’ve reached the stage where the lowest ranked nations should play among themselves to qualify for the right to play at this level. It’s become absurd.” While one suspects a younger Lineker would have happily looked past the absurdity of such a mismatch and seen instead an opportunity to fill his Adidas Copa Mundials, the current incarnation seemed unenthused by the spectacle of England piling the hurt on a team who have never won an international match and boast a car salesman and graphic designer among their number. Southgate should ignore England critics and stay pragmatic | Jacob Steinberg

Picking a side that is solid in the middle of the field is common sense rather than negativity – this is not fantasy football In games such as these it can be hard to resist the urge to bemoan Gareth Southgate’s reluctance to play a freewheeling 1-0-9 formation, with Phil Foden playing the sweeper role and Harry Kane leading a gung-ho attack of Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Gary Lineker, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Pelé, Maradona and Ali Daei. Just why does Southgate refuse to go for it? Why is he so determined not to entertain? Is he actually Otto Rehhagel in disguise? All of these questions were bubbling away when England, struggling to find their passing game on a horribly slow pitch, were being held by Albania, who were refusing to be good sports by rolling over and making life straightforward for the bigger side. Women's Club World Cup could happen 'fairly soon', says ECA chief executive

Charlie Marshall believes event could be arranged quickly ‘I know Fifa is very, very keen on it as well,’ Marshall says The European Club Association chief executive, Charlie Marshall, has talked up the prospect of a women’s Club World Cup starting “fairly soon” as the clubs’ body launches its first women’s football strategy. The ECA has been working in women’s club football for some time but this is the first time the organisation has built a comprehensive plan for its involvement. The ECA’s “Be a Changemaker” strategy commits the organisation to helping accelerate professionalism, advance the economic development of the women’s game, identify new commercial opportunities, facilitate the creation of new clubs and produce “first of its kind” research studies through a high-performance taskforce to plug the research gap in women’s sport. Ryan Fraser earns Scotland point in Israel as Steve Clarke rues slow start

Even the upcoming visit of a hapless Faroe Islands team to Hampden Park is unlikely to provide Steve Clarke with much solace. Two points from as many fixtures to open World Cup qualification means Scotland are already in the kind of tricky position that has fatally undermined campaigns of the recent past. In Israel a sluggish first half undermined a quest for three valuable points. Clarke hoped for – and very possibly needed – so much more. Harry Kane takes centre stage as efficient England see off Albania

The disparity has been difficult to explain. Harry Kane’s numbers have been phenomenal for Tottenham this season; he is the joint top scorer in the Premier League and the outright leader in assists. In all competitions at club level, the striker has 27 goals and has set up 16 more. And yet when he began this World Cup qualifier against Albania, he had failed to find the net in six England matches and contributed only one assist. Kane is the type of competitor to take these things personally and his determination to put things right was the driving force behind a victory that sets up England nicely for Wednesday’s crunch game against Poland at Wembley. Gareth Southgate’s team were lacking tempo and incision until Kane swooped to convert an excellent cross from Luke Shaw, who played his first international since September 2018. And when Kane played in Mason Mount for the second goal just after the hour, there was no doubt about the destination of the points. Continue reading... from

Harry Kane shuts out the noise to fix his focus on a pivotal summer

England’s captain has tough choices to make about his future but the prospect of glory at a ‘home’ Euros is his big ambition To understand how much is on the line for Harry Kane this summer, it is worth laying everything out. He will captain England in what is in effect a home tournament and the prospect of lifting the weight imposed by five and a half decades of history is one that sets his eyes aglow. Kane believes he is at the height of his powers: he has never felt this good about his game so this would be the period, performing on those golden July evenings to a country that has rarely been more thirsty for a flush of euphoria, when a career’s loftiest ambitions bear fruit. Whatever the truth of Poland's Wembley trauma, the lessons of 1973 still resound | Jonathan Wilson

Sir Alf Ramsey’s side were in decline and England missed out on two World Cups, but Poland drawing at Wembley gave birth to an enduring myth that they were a bogey team Version one: England played really well at Wembley, had 36 shots to Poland’s two, conceded to a goal that stemmed from uncharacteristic mistakes by Norman Hunter and Peter Shilton, and were unfortunate to draw 1-1. Version two: England deservedly failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup as they could only draw against Poland, their lack of attacking intelligence exposed by the way they spent the final minutes of the game as they chased a winner endlessly lofting the ball into the box. Manchester United Women at Old Trafford is great – and a chance missed | Suzanne Wrack

WSL weekend gives exciting taste of what is to come under new TV deal but not lifting broadcast restrictions is self-defeating It is incredible, really, that nothing has changed yet everything has changed. This weekend, with no Premier League or men’s Championship football, the Women’s Super League will take centre stage in domestic action. The kick-off times are staggered so every game can be watched. This is not a new phenomenon. The concept was born in November 2019 when Women’s Football Weekend was introduced. Since then fixtures have been positioned with one eye on the men’s calendar and, while Women’s Football Weekend still sits in November, the Football Association has taken advantage of the men’s international breaks more frequently. This weekend is one of those times. It is a scenario that we have become increasingly used to. So why does it feel different? Roque Júnior: 'I won everything I wanted and more'

The former Brazil centre-back won the Copa Libertadores, the World Cup and the Champions League. What was his secret? By Eryck Gomes for Yellow and Green Football Roque Júnior won just about everything he could in football: a Copa Libertadores title with Palmeiras in 1999, the Champions League with Milan in 2003, and the World Cup with Brazil in 2002. Only three other players in history have pulled off that particular treble of trophies: his fellow Brazilians Ronaldinho, Cafu and Dida. One of the few places Roque Júnior did not win any silverware, though, was at Leeds United, where he had a brief stint in 2003. “It didn’t go as I expected on the pitch, because I needed time to adapt. Lazio's Strakosha relishing England challenge in pursuit of Albania dream

Goalkeeper would love to play in ‘crazy’ Premier League but first aims to help country make history by reaching World Cup Thomas Strakosha is happiest when busy, so he will not be complaining about a potentially laborious evening on Sunday in Tirana. England are in town for a World Cup qualifier as an exciting crop of Albanians look to test themselves against Gareth Southgate’s side. There are ambitions for Albania to reach their first World Cup but they know to do so means getting points at home against countries such as England. The national team have qualified for only one tournament – Euro 2016 – but a squad including Marash Kumbulla, Armando Broja, Elseid Hysaj and Lazio’s goalkeeper Strakosha could break down the final barrier. Hereford's Josh Gowling: 'Gaming gives the lads a chance to shoot me'

Call of Duty sessions among players and coaches have boosted morale before an FA Trophy semi-final against Woking The first nine months of Josh Gowling’s managerial career may, he accepts, have brought on a few grey hairs. “I’m glad I’ve been through it, though,” says the Hereford manager. “I’ve learned more in this period than I would in many years of football. There have been so many facets to this season but it’s been so exciting, I’m happy with it.” Gowling’s energy rarely lets up during an hour-long conversation. His positivity is infectious and he hopes it will cajole his National League North side to an FA Trophy semi-final win over Woking, from the division above, on Saturday. An entire season, or whatever is left of it, treads a precarious line: while Hereford are unbeaten in 10 games they have only played once since mid-February, when the league season was declared null and void. Booking the club’s second-ever Wembley appearance would extend their interest until May, but de

The Fiver | The brazen neck to describe this as one of 'those big England nights'

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! England play the worst team in the world later on Thursday. San Marino are ranked 210th and last in the official rankings, and we always trust Fifa when it starts talking numbers. That means they’ve been even less successful historically than the likes of São Tomé and Principe, Brunei Darussalam, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Scotland. Kick-off at Wembley is at 7.45pm GMT on ITV. Not long after, Stacey makes a big decision in EastEnders, which sounds interesting, while over on The Dog House (Channel 4, 8pm) the folk at the kennels might have found a forever home for Grant the little West Highland terrier. Aw bless. Very much looking forward to seeing him scamper about. Tackling tough topics: how EFL prepares would-be stars of the future

Academy scholars are educated about everything from online discrimination to taking care over dressing-room music It is Thursday afternoon and 185 people, the majority scholars from English Football League academies, are tuned into Dismantling Discrimination Online, a Zoom webinar that centres on the game’s increasingly volatile relationship with social media. Coaches and parents are also in attendance for an interactive session courtesy of the League Football Education (LFE), which delivers the EFL’s welfare programmes, in conjunction with Kick It Out. It begins with couple of quick polls; one reveals 48% of those on the call have witnessed or experienced online discrimination. A later vote shows 97% believe not enough is being done to stop online discrimination taking place. Last month the EFL, with other football bodies, sent an open letter to the heads of Twitter and Facebook criticising “inaction” and demanding change.
