Football transfer rumours: Leeds and Everton join Cody Gakpo chase?

Today’s fluff is a second-hand cardigan There is not long left in the transfer window, so there is plenty to get excited about. Well, at least there will be some funny panic buys. Will Chelsea buy Paolo Maldini for £70m? Will Manchester United go for Marko Arnautovic again? Will Manchester City bring back Paul Dickov for a third spell? Only time will tell. What a fun summer it has been for Cody Gakpo . First, Nottingham Forest tried to sign him, then Manchester United showed a bit of interest before going for Antony, and now Leeds , Everton and Southampton are keen on acquiring the PSV Eindhoven midfielder. The Saints had a bid for the Dutchman turned down earlier this week. Football transfer rumours: Broja and Gallagher to Everton for Gordon?

Today’s fluff is transforming, vibrating, glowing The tug of war between Everton and Chelsea over Anthony Gordon continues to get ever more ridiculous . In fact, it is getting seriously trippy. It says here that the hope at Stamford Bridge is that by dangling Conor Gallagher , Armando Broja and £25m in front of Goodison Park suits, Frank Lampard might be convinced to finally let go of Gordon’s feet. The Mill’s not brilliant at maths but this kind of deal would appear to make the attacking midfielder, who is yet to get into double figures for goals at Everton, worth around £75m to £80m. Far out, man. Across Stanley Park, Liverpool have midfield problems of their own to sort out. Despite emphatically ending talk of a crisis with their nine-goal evisceration of Bournemouth, Jürgen Klopp is still keen to add a middle man who can last more than one game without getting injured to his ranks. Manchester United close to sealing £84m move for Ajax’s Antony

• Talks ongoing with Dutch side over structure of deal • United set to make 22-year-old fifth signing of summer Manchester United are closing in on a move to sign Antony after agreeing to pay around €100m (£84m) for the Brazil forward, with negotiations over the terms of the transfer progressing smoothly. Last week the Dutch club rejected an offer of €90m – United’s third bid for the 22-year-old - but it is understood that talks have been ongoing in recent days and Erik ten Hag’s side are increasingly confident of securing him. Negotiations are understood to be continuing over the structure of the deal, with Antony now expected to become Ten Hag’s fifth summer signing before the window closes at 11pm on Thursday in what would be United’s second-most expensive transfer ever. Wolves v Newcastle: Premier League – live!

Updates from the 2pm BST kick-off at Molineux ‘He has a gift’ – the making of Matheus Nunes Get in touch! You can email Daniel or tweet him As for Newcastle, those two absentees will be problematic – Guimaraes is serious player, and gives them craft they don’t have without him, while Wilson holds it up and gets goals. Longstaff, in for the former, might just be growing into the player he looked like becoming when he bullied Man City at the start of his career – Michael Carrick with legs would be a helluva player – but Wood will necessitate a change in approach, a focal point but not a point of difference. It feels faintly ludicrous to bemoan Wolves’ travails in front of goal. Under Nuno Espírito Santo, it was easy to blame a conservative approach that was almost an insult to the talented attackers he had at his disposal. But under the more expansive Lage, the same problem persists, and Newcastle are unlikely to let them play themselves into prolificity, were prolificity a wor

Okan Buruk’s Galatasaray reboot fired up by rivals Fenerbahce’s stars wars

Istanbul giants face a febrile test of their new manager’s efforts to restore glory amid a furore over their neighbours’ shirts After their worst Super Lig finish of 13th, Turkey’s most successful club are trying to reignite the flame. The season could not have gone much worse for Galatasaray, and they have returned to their tried and tested method of hiring a club legend as head coach and bringing in ageing foreign players. Such was the failing in the league that they sacked Fatih Terim after a disastrous start to the season. His replacement, Domènec Torrent, lasted six unpopular months in Istanbul. The Spaniard halted the slide, secured a draw in Camp Nou against Barcelona and the players enjoyed his methods but that was not enough to keep his job. Gareth Southgate has a decision on his hands about England’s goalkeeper

Jordan Pickford has the shirt but Dean Henderson, Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale have started the season in great form By Ben McAleer for WhoScored “To sit there and waste 12 months is criminal, really, at my age. I was fuming.” Dean Henderson did not hold back when he left Manchester United for Nottingham Forest on loan earlier this summer. Having looked increasingly likely to take over as United’s first-choice goalkeeper last season, he contracted Covid, lost his place and had to watch on as David de Gea held on to the No 1 shirt and ended up being voted the club’s player of the season by his teammates . Henderson made just two appearances for United last season, neither of which came in the Premier League. A move away this summer suited all parties. United will benefit from one of their players boosting his profile, while Henderson will gain the regular gametime in the Premier League that he craves and needs. Football transfer rumours: Liverpool join the race for Frenkie de Jong?

Today’s tell-all has lost the final piece of the jigsaw Wesley Fofana may be sulking in the stands and missing the odd training session at Leicester as he holds out for a move but Chelsea are currently still no closer to reaching an agreement to sign him , which has prompted the west London club to cast around elsewhere. And one potential central defensive alternative is scapegoating’s Harry Maguire . According to the Evening Standard, Maguire is no longer seen as indispensable by the Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, and could be tempted by a move before the transfer window closes on Wednesday. ‘We text each other’: Forest Green’s Burchnall ready for Potter reunion | Ben Fisher

Old friends face each other in the Carabao Cup but Brighton’s manager has led the way from university to Sweden and England The first time Ian Burchnall and Graham Potter duelled on the touchline it was for a much-anticipated match between their respective Leeds University and Leeds Metropolitan University teams. Almost two decades on, the pair renew an old rivalry on Wednesday when Potter brings his Brighton side to Forest Green Rovers in the Carabao Cup second round. “They were always good games,” Burchnall says. “A lot of the other students rock up and it could get a bit lively, because they’ve all been at the SU [student union] bar drinking. Whenever we played Leeds Met we couldn’t get the ball off them and that was Graham training a team twice a week. Even back then you could see his identity.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/aug/24/forest-green-ian-burchnall-graham-potter-brighton-reunion-carabao-cup

Wesley Fofana dropped after missing training session amid Chelsea bids

The unsettled centre-back was left out against Southampton Club demanding more than £80m for 21-year-old player Wesley Fofana missed a training session last week as Chelsea’s pursuit of him intensified and Brendan Rodgers has conceded the defender’s behaviour was a factor in his decision to leave the Frenchman out as Leicester’s winless start to the season continued. Gabriel Jesus has sparked Arsenal’s ‘winning mentality’, claims Mikel Arteta

Striker bullied Marcos Senesi during 3-0 win at Bournemouth ‘He is still young but he is a really good role model for the boys’ Mikel Arteta praised Gabriel Jesus for bringing some much‑needed “spark” to Arsenal, who have won their opening three league games for the first time since 2004-05 after finishing last season by limping into fifth place. “We now have a new confidence, a spark, and that winning mentality that he has,” Arteta said of the £45m signing from Manchester City after Jesus bullied the Bournemouth debutant Marcos Senesi before going on a mazy run to help set up his side’s opener and providing an assist for Martin Ødegaard’s second. “He competes for every ball and transmits his energy and his quality to the rest of the team.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/aug/20/gabriel-jesus-has-sparked-arsenals-wining-mentality-claims-mikel-arteta

Yes, elite football is a plaything of global wealth. But it could be part of another, better England | David Goldblatt

A new US television deal enriches the Premier League further still. Will the game remain insulated from wider society, or help reshape it? Last week, the Premier League announced a $2.7bn (£2.3bn), six-year American TV deal with Comcast NBC , a sum that will push the league’s annual turnover above £6bn and marks the moment at which income from foreign media rights income exceeds domestic income. It is a fitting marker for the league’s 30th season and its three decades of hyper-globalisation. First, the Premier League’s global TV audience outstripped domestic viewership. Then the entirely foreign XI fielded by Chelsea in 1999 announced the globalisation of the league’s labour market; foreign players now make up around three-quarters of the club’s squads. Foreign coaches, once entirely absent, are now in the majority, as are foreign owners, who hold majority stakes in 16 out of the 20 clubs. The league has benefited from an income-sharing model among the clubs that ensures, if not wide

Ten Hag needs a pragmatic approach to revive Manchester United | Will Unwin

Another heavy loss at Old Trafford could have significant ramifications and the manager may have to sacrifice ideals Erik ten Hag is confident in his ability to turn around Manchester United’s fortunes despite defeats in their two opening Premier League fixtures. Unfortunately for the new head coach, the 4-0 loss to Brentford showed his players are failing to implement his style effectively, sapping morale to its lowest point at Old Trafford. It is admirable that Ten Hag wants to replicate the formula that has worked for him elsewhere to make huge strides at United in the long term but with a fixture against Liverpool awaiting on Monday, another heavy loss could have significant ramifications. Trying to adjust to a new set of tactical and stylistic rules is hard enough for footballers at the best of times but when low on confidence it is almost impossible. Graeme Souness’s careless comments meant his point got lost in translation | Barney Ronay

The TV pundit’s clumsy discussion of a ‘man’s game’ obscured an interesting observation about the theatre of aggression It is one of the most reliable features of modern life that any piece of news, no matter how banal, must inspire an instant and violently polarised public response. In its simplest form this boils down to the standard opposition of snowflakes and gammons. These are familiar, comforting categories by now. The snowflake is cloyingly pure, but also fragile, wet, melty and cold. The gammon is empurpled, stubborn, salty and thick with gristle. Both come with their own discrete areas of concern, left versus right, old versus young, furiously angry versus angrily furious. Football transfer rumours: Spurs to swoop for Atalanta’s Malinovskyi?

Today’s tell-all has turned it off and turned it on again Antonio Conte continues to showboat about his ability to get Tottenham to spend money on players of all ages, with the Atalanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi the latest target on his radar. The 29-year-old Ukraine international is also of interest to – but, of course – Nottingham Forest, but Malinovskyi is thought to be keen on a move to Spurs, possibly on an initial season’s loan with an option to buy at the end of the campaign. Talking of Forest, they are at least reported to be closing in on Houssem Aouar of Lyon but the clubs are yet to agree for a fee for the 24-year-old midfielder, who has one France cap. Taiwo Awoniyi’s long journey to the Premier League finally at an end

Nigerian striker scored his first goal in the English top flight for Nottingham Forest – seven years after signing for Liverpool “It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League,” Taiwo Awoniyi announced after joining Nottingham Forest as their record signing. It took the Nigerian a mere seven years from signing for Liverpool to finally make his mark but his ambitions to make it in England started even further back. In between his arrival in England to the present day, he has ticked off seven loans and two permanent moves. The Nigerian striker became Nottingham Forest’s first signing of the summer when the club spent £17.5m on Awoniyi, as a sign of their intentions, to mark their return to the top flight. Thomas Tuchel suggests Anthony Taylor should not referee Chelsea again

German plays down confrontation with Antonio Conte Spurs manager: ‘Next time, we don’t shake hands’ Thomas Tuchel suggested it may be better if Anthony Taylor no longer referees Chelsea’s games but the German played down his row with Antonio Conte after the rival managers clashed moments after Harry Kane rescued a late point for Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. Tempers were high during a passionate London derby, with Tuchel and Conte both facing touchline bans after being sent off after the final whistle. The two managers had both been booked after squaring up to each other in the wake of the first Spurs equaliser, which Chelsea argued should have been disallowed for a challenge by Rodrigo Bentancur on Kai Havertz and then for offside against Richarlison, and they had to be pulled apart again after full time. A Manchester United clearout is needed. None of the parts fit together | Jonathan Wilson

A keeper that can’t use his feet and forward line lacking mobility – there is not a single element of this side that works It was less than a year ago that Manchester United won at West Ham to stretch their record unbeaten league run away from home to 29 games. What a happy, uncomplicated time that must seem for them now, in the wake of a seventh successive away defeat with a cumulative score of 2-21. This is United’s worst away run since 1936. Was the performance in west London worse than the 5-0 defeat at Crystal Palace in 1972? It’s probably too early to be sure, but Saturday was haplessness at a volume that will resonate through the generations. While money is a huge help, it is culture that drives success in football | Jason Stockwood

England’s Euro 2022 triumph opened up an image of what is possible when excellence and team cohesion are the drivers If there is one phrase that we keep hearing when talking to other people in the game, it is that “football is different to other businesses”. Granted, you never see employees kissing the logo of their company shirts, but it seems to be used as an excuse for unsustainable business models, concentrating power in a small group of individuals, ignoring broader stakeholders and propping up outdated, often sexist cultures. Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed signals that indicate an opportunity for disruption in other industries; travel in the late 1990s, dating and financial services in the last 15 years. I think those signals are strong in football today. As this education into the realpolitik of football ownership continues, one example of where these signals are strong is around player transfers and contracts. Brentford’s identity v Man Utd’s muddle, Kanté could be key for Chelsea and Tielemans can send Arsenal a message Thomas Tuchel did not hold back with his praise for N’Golo Kanté at the end of last season. “He is our Mo Salah, our Van Dijk, our De Bruyne,” Chelsea’s manager said. “He is Neymar, our Kylian Mbappé – he makes a difference.” Then came the caveat. For Tuchel, the frustration was how often Kanté found himself in the treatment room. The France midfielder has struggled with minor knocks since 2019, and there have been times when he has lacked the dynamism of old. That said, there is still nothing quite like watching Kanté when he is in peak condition. Few midfielders can live with the 31-year-old when he is in the mood and he will be key to Chelsea’s chances of victory when they host Tottenham on Sunday. Spurs will start as slight favourites, but the balance of power could tip back in Chelsea’s favour if Kanté overpowers Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. JS Chelsea

Bournemouth win on top-flight return as Lerma and Moore sink Aston Villa

Perhaps Scott Parker’s frank forewarning was a feat of kidology. Bournemouth’s manager did not sugarcoat his words in the buildup to their first Premier League game in two years, saying his squad was under-resourced and weaker than the one promoted from the Championship. The reality is Bournemouth totally outsmarted an Aston Villa team fresh from a summer facelift. The hosts flew out of the blocks, Jefferson Lerma leathering in on three minutes after feasting on some poor Villa defending, and they doubled their advantage with 10 minutes to play when Kieffer Moore headed in unchallenged. Bournemouth deserved victory on their return to this level but for Steven Gerrard, who acknowledged his side need to walk the walk after a positive pre-season, this alarming display will have provided a rude awakening. For Villa it was an afternoon reminiscent of their opening-day defeat to Watford last season, when a promoted team wiped the floor with them and they trailed 3-0 inside 67 minutes. As s

As much as I cherish the memory of that historic day in 1966, standing behind the goal into which Geoff Hurst smashed his “they think it’s all over” victory clincher and then roaring like three lions at the final whistle, I felt even more involved and invested this time round as the Lionesses prepared to meet Germany . Lionesses’ legacy at risk as school PE fails girls, experts warn

In the past 10 years alone, 42,000 hours of PE lessons have been lost in UK secondary schools – and girls are the worst hit Twelve years of Tory government have had a disastrous impact on girls’ sport in schools, experts have said, warning that last weekend’s women’s Euro victory will be squandered unless drastic action is taken. In the past 10 years, 42,000 hours of PE lessons have been lost in secondaries – with girls the most affected – and the situation is getting worse, according to the Youth Sport Trust. From Lionesses to missed chances: why elite success doesn’t always transform the grassroots

England women’s Euros triumph has created massive interest in the game, but elite success doesn’t necessarily benefit sport at a lower level On Tuesday, the FA announced that tickets for the England women’s football friendly against the USA in October had gone on sale. Within an hour, its website had crashed from the demand. Gabby Logan had predicted as much when she signed off from the Lionesses’ victory at the European Championships last Sunday. “You think it’s all over?” she told viewers. “It’s only just begun.” In the week since England’s historic win over Germany in the final, there has been understandable excitement about the future of women’s football in the UK. Even the Queen, not noted for her football punditry, has added her voice to the throng. “You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations,” she said in her congratulatory message to Leah Williamson’s side. ‘Once a blue, you’re a blue’: Haaland renews family bonds with City

Erling Haaland’s arrival at the Premier League champions is met with more cheer than father Alfie’s sad early retirement Erling Haaland may be a rarity in the brand-conscious world of blockbuster transfers: a superstar signing whose professed love for Manchester City is actually genuine. Where many footballers kiss the badge and cite being childhood fans of Club A, Haaland is the 22-year-old centre-forward whose father, Alfie, played for City, was popular with teammates and staff and would take his infant son to the champions’ former stadium, Maine Road. Roy Bailey was City’s physiotherapist when Haaland Sr was at the club for three seasons from 2000. “I remember him bringing his young lad Erling in when he was injured on a Sunday morning,” he says. “He had the freedom of Maine Road. I’d see him as a toddler when he brought him into the treatment room and he let him run about on the pitch. Alfie was very fond of City.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.

Premier League: 10 things to look out for on the opening weekend

Arsenal look to avoid another opening-day stinker, Everton look toothless and will Jürgen Klopp start Darwin Núñez? It has become traditional that Arsenal look somewhat undercooked going into a season, but this time their hosts harbour more question marks. While Crystal Palace battered them at Selhurst Park in April, a rematch so soon appears to suit the visitors more and Patrick Vieira’s prediction of “a completely different game” seems hard to fault. Palace are yet to find a replacement for Conor Gallagher, whose energy was so fundamental to their better performances last season, while Cheikhou Kouyaté has left and the current injury list includes James McArthur and Michael Olise. Reinforcements have taken longer to arrive than Vieira might like, while Mikel Arteta has been able to strengthen in key areas and field something close to his favoured starting XI in recent friendlies. A year ago Arsenal’s Covid-weakened side began disastrously at Brentford , but a Friday night fright do

'Wrong moment, wrong reasons': Jürgen Klopp angry at winter World Cup – video

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has said he is 'angry' about the 2022 World Cup, which is being held mid-season in Qatar after years of controversy. The German likened the situation to climate change crisis, saying 'as much as everybody knows it's not right, nobody talks often enough about it.' The men's World Cup will take place between 21 November and 18 December despite concerns over player welfare, the state's poor human rights record and allegations of bribery over the vote to award Qatar the tournament in 2010. Arsenal sink Crystal Palace after Gabriel Martinelli gives them head start

A new season and a new, ruthless winning machine called Arsenal? Nobody would sensibly take things to such an extreme but this was a big improvement on the fare they were serving up a mere four months ago. Back then they were demolished here, losing 3-0 and simply failing to turn up; no such accusation could be levelled this time and, while there were enough wobbles to leave Crystal Palace feeling a draw would have been fair, the fact they steered home safely at a traditionally turbulent hunting ground can only augur well. As opening games go this was intense, engaging fare in which both sides carried the fight admirably. A goal in each half settled things but perhaps the defining sequence, from an Arsenal perspective at least, came eight minutes after half-time when Wilfried Zaha was denied by the cleanest of tackles from William Saliba as he twisted towards the byline. An old foe had been bested by a newcomer to the league and it would not be the final time; Saliba was outstanding i

Frank Lampard hopes ‘tough love’ can get Dele Alli back on the goal trail

Everton manager says playmaker can be an option in attack Alli has started only once for club since move from Tottenham Frank Lampard has said support and “tough love” can help reignite Dele Alli’s career and provide Everton with the goal threat they urgently require. Everton will start the new Premier League season against Chelsea without an established striker after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was ruled out for six weeks with a knee injury and Richarlison was sold to Tottenham . A replacement for the Brazil international, along with two midfielders, remains on Lampard’s wish-list for this transfer window. There is also interest in the Wolves defender Conor Coady. Saliba and Zinchenko fire Arsenal’s early-season hopes in sultry opener | Barney Ronay

Mikel Arteta’s new team were excellent in an encouraging opening-day victory at a scorched Selhurst Park Yes: the rumours are true. The Premier League, which never really went away, has returned. And it felt pretty good on a sultry Friday night, watching an Arsenal team of eager new moving parts do an excellent job of raising some tender early-season hopes at Selhurst Park. It was 24 degrees in South London as kick-off approached on the earliest date the English top tier has ever begun. This was a desiccated kind of heat, the grass scorched white, the sky a deathly blue. The English summer does at least have a sense of irony. To avoid the Gulf sun the Premier League will instead play through a heatwave in England. Premier League players will no longer take the knee before every match

Captains agree to use gesture at specific moments during season Those include opening and final weekend and cup finals The Premier League’s players will no longer take the knee before every match, preferring to perform the anti‑racism gesture at specific high‑profile moments during the season in the belief that less is more. The club captains met last week to discuss whether to continue with the gesture that was introduced in 2020 during Project Restart to support the Black Lives Matter movement, which came to prominence after the death of George Floyd in the United States. With Kelly Cates, Emma Saunders and the Guardian columnist Karen Carney unavailable due to prior engagements, the empty stool at one end is reserved for one of the original Spice Boys, Jamie Redknapp, who is running late in a state of affairs unlikely to please his bearded Irish bandmate. To be fair, Keane seems in good spirits and is looking fit, tanned and extremely lean. Continue reading...
