Bournemouth v Aston Villa: match preview

Bournemouth and Aston Villa need a win as crunch time is approaching in the relegation battle. Eddie Howe’s side could climb out of danger with three points while dropping their rivals into trouble and a dip in form may be on the cards for Villa after the thrill of making the League Cup final. Mbwana Samatta’s first start in the Premier League will hopefully provide the goal threat Dean Smith’s side have lacked. Bournemouth have to put FA Cup defeat behind them and reproduce the performance that beat Brighton and snapped their six-match winless run. Manchester United consider new King bid as Howe says matter out of his hands

• United want to bring Joshua King back to Old Trafford • Howe indicates player wants move and club could sanction it Manchester United are considering another bid for Joshua King after Bournemouth turned down their approach for the striker. Transfer deadline day: the latest on Joshua King, Mertens, Giroud and more – live!

Rolling coverage of the final day of the January transfer window Transfer window interactive – every deal from Europe’s top five leagues Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend Email gregg.bakowski@theguardian.com | Tweet @GreggBakowski 9.28am GMT Edinson Cavani will stay at PSG for the remainder of the season after Atlético Madrid failed to reach a deal with the French club for a transfer in this window. The Uruguayan had been desperate to join up with Diego Simeone’s team but will now join the La Liga side on a free in the summer instead. 9.21am GMT This is from our man in Manchester, Jamie Jackson, on Josh King. Bournemouth: “Joshua King remains on Manchester United’s radar. Unless Bournemouth can bring in another forward they may be reluctant to sell King given he is one of only three senior strikers there, along with Callum Wilson and Dominic Solanke. As always on transfer deadline day there could be developments.” However, Eddie Howe sounded resigned

Football transfer rumours: Salomon Rondón to Manchester United?

Today’s fluff has just got its homework in on time With deadline day upon us, the future whereabouts of Olivier Giroud remain a source of intrigue, the dashing Frenchman having been linked with no end of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Inter among others. Lazio are the latest outfit to express interest in the Chelsea striker, while Sky Italia have suggested he may stay away from training today in the hope of forcing a move away from Stamford Bridge. With Tammy Abraham injured, Frank Lampard is reluctant to let Giroud leave without signing another veteran centre-forward in his place and as the clock ticks down to 11pm, he will ramp up his efforts to bring in Napoli’s Dries Mertens or Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani before releasing Giroud back into the wild. In bad news for both Frank and Olivier, the French sports daily L’Equipe say Cavani will not be leaving PSG today. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

An unusual quandary for Manchester City, crunch games at Bournemouth and Newcastle, plus the rise of Wilfried Ndidi Credit to Leicester. Or should that be shame on Chelsea? Wherever you choose to put the emphasis, the fact is that Wilfried Ndidi is now a more influential Premier League midfielder than N’Golo Kanté. The Frenchman has been good this season, of course, but Frank Lampard, like Maurizio Sarri, has not been getting the best out of him. Ndidi, meanwhile, has been outstanding and, if he dominates central midfield again on Saturday, then Leicester will probably put their Carabao Cup disappointment behind them, take a significant step closer to Champions League qualification, and make the jostling for fourth place very interesting. Swansea’s Conor Gallagher: ‘Heart surgery made me not take anything for granted’

The 19-year-old, on loan from Chelsea, discusses Frank Lampard, his future at Stamford Bridge and his brothers’ support End-of-season awards can be deemed trivial but, at Chelsea, the academy player of the year accolade carries considerable weight. Just ask Conor Gallagher, the latest recipient of that prize. “The previous three winners all play for the first team now, so there’s a bit of pressure,” the 19-year-old says, his smile broadening, referring to Reece James, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori, fixtures of Frank Lampard’s squad after spending last season on loan in the Championship. “I was buzzing when I heard I had won, knowing the players that have won it and what they have gone on to do.” For Gallagher, who joined Swansea on loan a fortnight ago having shone at Charlton in the first half of the season, that award was a welcome addition to an already handsome silverware collection. Three years ago Gallagher won the Under-17 World Cup with England under the now Swansea head coac

Football transfer rumours: Ivan Rakitic to Manchester United?

Today’s fluff laughs in the face of deadlines Senior university lecturers have already begun teaching students about The Richarlison Precedent, which holds that no scenario can ever confidently be dismissed as unrealistic because Barcelona supposedly once bid £85m for a player who has spent most of this season revolving around Dominic Calvert-Lewin. It is understood that one lippy undergraduate at Solent University thought they were being very clever today by countering “what about if someone reported that, having being snubbed by Everton, Barça have now turned their attention to Shane Long ?” and a hush immediately descended on the auditorium. Might that be true? Could it happen? The sharpest minds in the land are no longer sure of anything. Except, of course, that BT Sport would be better off bringing in some busker to do a saxophone solo whenever Ian Darke needs a break, rather than getting Steve McManaman to do co-comms. No fairytale comeback but Solskjær’s tactics prove testing for Guardiola | Jamie Jackson

With Manchester City threatening to overrun United in the first half, Solskjær tweaked United’s shape and earned his reward with the winning goal In this second leg a place in the Carabao Cup final beckoned for the team whose manager plotted the better gameplan. Whether Manchester United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjær possesses the tactical vision to outmanoeuvre a coach of Pep Guardiola’s ilk has become a prevailing debate regarding the Norwegian. The argument goes that a man who failed badly at Cardiff City and whose two titles as a No 1 “only” came with Molde in Norway’s top flight is a babe in a land of managerial giants embodied by the Spaniard who leads Manchester City. Manchester United fans have a right to be angry but attacking Woodward’s home was outrageous | Paul Wilson

United fail a little more every year and nothing is done about it but turning up at a director’s house was beyond the pale Remember the good old days, when Manchester United supporters used to be characterised by their uncomplaining politeness and fondness for prawn sandwiches? There were clear signs that attitudes had hardened last week, when many fans left Old Trafford early and others used the Burnley defeat as an opportunity to hope dire fates might befall the unpopular Glazer family and their representative in the north-west of England, though it is still a shocking progression to go from chanting nasty things about Ed Woodward inside a football ground to finding out where he lives and attacking his home . The club have quite properly responded to the attempt to put the frighteners on United’s executive vice-chairman with a pledge to ban anyone found responsible for life. One would expect nothing less, yet it is entirely possible that those who turned up at Woodward’s home with

TV piracy hits Saudi Newcastle takeover – not the beheadings and crucifixions then? | Marina Hyde

Newcastle United fans might not like Mike Ashley much but some things that go on in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia are a little bit more sinister News that Saudi Arabia may have their eye on acquiring Mike Ashley’s Newcastle United feels as inevitable now as it would have felt insane 20 years ago. The “complicated” nature of the UK’s relationship with the kingdom is so powerful that you can’t expect it to be confined to the mere arms trade or the superprime London property market. Ultimately, the formbook suggests, Saudi Arabia will wish to acquire a huge reputation-laundering machine, with a somewhat smaller stadium-based athletic content facility attached. What we used to think of as “the football club”, if that isn’t going back too far to make sense in this day and age. Happily, the Saudi regime are not the only ones whose priorities are somewhat out of whack. Ashley Young makes rapid Inter impact as Serie A title race heats up

Internazionale were held at home, but Lazio failed to capitalise in the Rome derby before Juve were rocked in Naples On his first weekend playing in Serie A, Ashley Young brought Inter back within touching distance of league leaders Juventus. OK, maybe that’s oversimplifying things a smidge. There were twists and turns galore on a weekend when the top four sides picked up three points between them, scoring fewer goals collectively than Atalanta managed on their own. Still, let’s begin with Young, and Inter. They were first to act in the title race, with a Sunday lunchtime kick-off at home to Cagliari. It felt like an opportunity to put pressure on Juventus and Lazio before they played at Napoli and Roma, respectively, in the evening. Nagelsmann reads the riot act after Leipzig's rude awakening in Frankfurt | Andy Brassell

The Bundesliga leaders sleepwalked to defeat and now have Bayern, Mönchengladbach and Dortmund hot on their heels This week Julian Nagelsmann had his players sit through a presentation on the importance of good sleep to athletic performance. Some supporters might have felt RB Leipzig had already overindulged on that score during the Bundesliga’s hibernation period, with only a couple of high impact contributions from the red-hot Timo Werner rousing them from their slumbers against Union Berlin last week to take the points that maintained a healthy lead at the top of the table. Seven days later and Leipzig were still having trouble switching on for the full duration of proceedings, although the order of service was inverted this time around. Nagelsmann’s team began the afternoon by breathing the sort of flames Germany’s top flight has become used to in the last couple of years. They ended napping at the fireside as Eintracht Frankfurt turned up the volume and took over the party. Havi

Football transfer rumours: Thomas Lemar to join Arsenal?

Today’s fluff is is expecting to be underwhelmed Having managed to get his Arsenal players to stop shrugging when things go wrong, run further, shout more and generally look like they give a damn when they take to the field, Mikel Arteta can now start to think about the next step in the evolution of his Gunners … and a little creator is what he needs! There’s a player in Spain who has caught the eye but fans of romance will be disappointed to hear that it is not Santi Cazorla. No, step forward Thomas Lemar , the pocket-sized playmaker who has failed to shine in the rigid system at Atlético Madrid . The word is that Diego Simeone would happily hoof him towards London to make space in his squad for another striker, with Edinson Cavani the most likely arrival at the Wanda Metropolitano. The word is that Lemar, who joined Atlético in 2018 from Monaco for £50m is “close” to sealing a loan move with the possibility of a permanent deal in the summer. Shrewsbury bring the romance, Lampard gets a tune from Kovacic and Parker has cause for pride in beaten Fulham Jude Bellingham played within himself at the weekend, part of an under-powered Birmingham performance against Coventry in the match between landlord and tenant at St Andrew’s. With not much in the way of action to talk about, however, the 16-year-old became the subject of post-match chatter, as a possible £30m move to Manchester United looms. The Birmingham manager, Pep Clotet, praised the teen’s character. Mark Robins, however, was even more effusive. “Jude Bellingham is outstanding,” said the Coventry manager. “The power and pace at 16 is there for everybody to see. He’s going to be a top player.” The midfielder might look to previous youthful sensations who made the move to Old Trafford, such as Nick Powell or even Wilfried Zaha, and know that there is no guarantee of continued progress. But at this point, and at such a tender age, it appears the stars are aligning for Bel

Cummings double stuns Liverpool as Shrews fight back to claim shock replay

Liverpool once again approached the FA Cup on economy setting, only to find Shrewsbury much more full of fight than Everton in the last round. The Premier League leaders should never have looked back after being gifted a 2-0 lead through a bizarre own goal right at the start of the second half, but two-goal Jason Cummings led a stirring Shrewsbury recovery and with more composure in front of goal the League One side might even have won the game. They certainly had the chances in the second half, though Shrewsbury will be happy enough with a replay at Anfield. Liverpool will be far less pleased with an extra game in a week designated for rest, and must now question the wisdom of leaving out so many regular first teamers. Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino were sent on before the end in search of a goal to settle the tie, though Shrewsbury were in no mood to allow that, and in truth a draw was the least they deserved. Solskjær finds FA Cup respite as Manchester United hit Tranmere for six

Prenton Park promised a depressing pitfall for Ole Gunnar Solskjær but instead it provided respite. His Manchester United team eased into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a comprehensive victory at Tranmere Rovers – the club’s biggest since the 8-2 defeat of Arsenal in 2011 – as a troubled week at Old Trafford ended without a fresh sense of crisis. Tranmere, 21st in League One and tiring throughout, were no match for United from the moment Harry Maguire struck his first goal for the club in the 10th minute. The visitors were three up by the 16th minute and any trepidation that Solskjær may have felt at visiting a lower league opponent operating on a mud bath of a pitch evaporated. West Ham knocked out by 10-man West Brom after Conor Townsend strikes

David Sullivan and David Gold cannot ignore the evidence piling up before their eyes. West Ham are an utter mess and the clock is ticking. The transfer window shuts on Friday and David Moyes, who wore a rather haunted look at the end of this game, needs signings. West Ham’s manager needs a right-back, a midfielder and a striker. He needs his bosses to reach into their pockets or face the likelihood of relegation from the Premier League. West Bromwich Albion barely had to break stride to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup at West Ham’s expense, even though they lost Semi Ajayi to a red card in the closing stages. Conor Townsend scored the only goal to ensure that Slaven Bilic emerged victorious on his return to this strange and unhappy ground, where the disgruntled locals did not witness a shot on target from Moyes’s side until the 89th minute. Southampton force replay with Spurs thanks to Sofiane Boufal’s late equaliser

José Mourinho had bemoaned the way the fixtures are piling up for his Tottenham Hotspur side and, after the Southampton substitute Sofiane Boufal cancelled out a wonderfully crafted Son Heung-min opener, the Portuguese has another game to add to the list. Son struck after a magical weaving run by Giovani Lo Celso, seemingly sealing relatively smooth passage to the FA Cup fifth round but Boufal had other ideas, lashing in after storming into the box to meet a cutback from Danny Ings, who thrice went close to finding an equaliser himself. Boufal struck three minutes from time to extinguish the significance of a barnstorming run by Lo Celso, which culminated in Son arrowing a strike into the far corner of the Southampton goal, and ensure a replay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. For so long, that seamless transition from defence to attack seemed set to earn them a place in the hat for the next round, only for Boufal to step off the bench and earn Southampton a leveller. The stadium that has been their permanent home since 1906, is also the Coventry’s temporary residence this season and as the first name out of the hat, they became the home team. I have a lot of good moments but the one I prefer is when I kicked the hooligan.” Cantona always refers to Matthew Simmons, with a delightful, absent-minded contempt, as “the hooligan”. It’s a neat way of dehumanising the gobby fan he dealt with when he tried to kick racism out of football on 25 January 1995. Twenty-five years later , the footage and images of his kung-fu kick retain an exhilarating power. It was the definitive example of what Alex Ferguson called Cantona’s “defiant charisma”. His defiance that night defined his career, and also his life. Continue reading... from Football | The Gua

‘Right the wrongs’: FA faces demand to end huge Cup gender pay gap

• Lewes want equal prize money for men’s and women’s teams • Men’s fund almost £30m bigger and fourth-round gap over £2.8m Lewes FC have challenged the Football Association to redress the huge gap in FA Cup prize money for men’s and women’s teams. The £2,000 earned by each of the 16 victorious women’s teams in this weekend’s fourth round is dwarfed by the £180,000 each successful men’s team will walk away with at the same stage, a prize money gap of more than £2.8m. Football transfer rumours: Carlos Tevez to rejoin Manchester United?

Today’s fluff is searching for the light There’s a desperation at Manchester United to return to the Fergie days and, in order to hasten the process, they’ve been linked with bringing back a 35-year-old Carlos Tevez from Boca Juniors . No news on the availability of David Bellion and Kleberson, mind. Some would say United need to get in new players whatever the cost. Ed Woodward, unfortunately for United fans , does not agree and will apparently not meet Sporting’s valuation of Bruno Fernandes. Matías Vecino will also not be arriving at Old Trafford after Internazionale batted away a loan offer for the midfielder. Will a clause against gender-based violence change Argentinian football?

Vélez Sarsfield have overhauled their players’ contracts in an effort to combat a problem that is all too common in society Ricardo Centurión is toxic. But the winger’s raw skill — his game is full of stepovers and mazy runs – appears to blind fans to his repeated transgressions. Time and time again, he is forgiven. Since turning professional with Racing Club in 2012, the 27-year-old has had three of his professional contracts rescinded for his behavior. Among other things, he has fallen out of favor for partying too much; been photographed in his swimming trunks while holding a shotgun ; insulted the president of Boca Juniors; tried to bribe a police officer to avoid a drink-driving test; crashed his car while trying to evade police; fought his own teammates; and argued with his manager mid-game. That last incident ended in his exile on loan to Liga MX, although he is now back in Argentina with Vélez Sarsfield, on loan from Racing Club. With seven games of the season left, Véle

Tranmere manager Micky Mellon wary of ‘formidable’ Manchester United

• Manager dismisses idea United will be vulnerable in FA Cup tie • Mellon: ‘We will be up against a formidable outfit’ Micky Mellon said Tranmere would embrace their lucrative fourth-round FA Cup tie against Manchester United but denied Sunday represented an ideal opportunity to increase Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s problems. Rovers, languishing 21st in League One, secured a home tie with Old Trafford’s fallen giants by overcoming Watford in extra time at Prenton Park. Mellon was manager of Shrewsbury Town when Louis van Gaal’s team won a fifth-round encounter en route to claiming the FA Cup in 2016 and insisted first-hand experience taught him not to treat United lightly. Jordan Henderson shows why he may be Liverpool’s most important player of all | Sachin Nakrani

Roberto Firmino’s winner at Wolves grabbed the headlines but Liverpool’s captain was, yet again, an immense figure As the final whistle blew on a cold and misty night in the Midlands, Liverpool’s players allowed themselves a moment to congregate in the centre of the pitch and celebrate yet another win. Backs were patted, hugs were exchanged and, not surprisingly, breaths were caught after what was the league leaders’ toughest assignment of the season so far. But one man in red was not there, for he had walked to the far side of the pitch to acknowledge the 3,000-plus travelling supporters who had made the trip here. In turn they saluted him, and rightly so. He was not only their captain but also the main reason this proved to be another joyous occasion for their side. Jordan Henderson was outstanding here, scoring his side’s first goal, assisting their second and in general performing with a level of authority, commitment and skill that continues to mark him out as arguably Liverpool’

FA Cup fourth round: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Slaven Bilic returns to West Ham, Chris Wilder goes back to where it all began and Arsenal may turn to Eddie Nketiah Shrewsbury are not averse to a flush of FA Cup romance. In January 2003 they were at the foot of the fourth tier when Everton visited and the wily old hands, Ian Woan and Nigel Jemson, combined to confirm one of this millennium’s more famous shocks. Wind back a couple of decades and they enjoyed two quarter-final appearances under Graham Turner. Between the two, in 1996, there was a fourth-round tie against Roy Evans’ Liverpool, who came away comfortable 4-0 winners. The local newspaper worked out that it was a meeting of teams worth £195,000 and £29.6m respectively. Back then it was an eye-watering disparity but nowadays the latter figure would not even buy you Sadio Mané’s weaker left foot. The Shrews are comfortable enough in League One’s midfield these days but Liverpool’s modern-day visit is arguably the toughest assignment they have ever faced. The beauty of the c

Northampton’s Jordan Turnbull: ‘Sharing a pitch with Rooney is special’

Manchester United-supporting centre-back should get to take on one of his heroes when Derby visit Sixfields in the FA Cup For those who like to think the FA Cup is about more than just monitoring the load on Premier League legs, one of the first ties of the fourth round looks a decent prospect. Two teams in good form, two teams with ambitions, two teams with distinctly contrasting styles, all under the floodlights on a Friday night. And for those who find the Cup an unnecessary distraction from more glamorous competitions then, yes, Northampton v Derby County will likely feature Wayne Rooney too. “It’s going to be quite special sharing a pitch with Rooney,” says Jordan Turnbull, the Northampton centre-half. A mainstay of Keith Curle’s team this season, with five league goals, the former Southampton youth product has been integral to the Cobblers’ League Two promotion push. He also happens to be a Manchester United fan. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.th
