The 56-year-old former Bristol Rovers, QPR, Plymouth, Leicester, Blackpool, Crystal Palace and Millwall boss, replaces Michael Jolley, who parted company with the Mariners in November following an expletive-laden rant aimed at local journalists . A statement on the club’s official website read: “Grimsby Town Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Ian Holloway as first team manager. With over 600 appearances as a player and taking charge of over 950 games over a 20-plus-year managerial career, Ian will bring invaluable experience to the table for the Mariners.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/dec/31/i-feel-like-a-kid-in-a-sweet-shop-ian-holloway-appointed-grimsb

SolskjĂŠr preaches cautious optimism as United look towards brighter 2020 | Aaron Bower

After a downward decade Manchester United’s manager believes he is beginning to see his side emerge through the mire Perhaps, in many ways, it is fitting that the 2020s should begin for Manchester United with a trip to Arsenal. The last decade began with United and Arsenal second and third respectively in the Premier League table, but having shared 11 of the first 12 Premier League titles, there were just two between them in the 2010s: the most recent of those going to United in 2013. These are two sides who find themselves in transitional periods, of that there can be no question. Whether the 2020s can provide happier times remains to be seen, but for Ole Gunnar SolskjĂŠr at least, there are grounds for cautious optimism. United finished 2019 with back-to-back victories against Newcastle and Burnley and, unlike Wednesday’s opponents, are firmly in the race for the Champions League places. Hodgson admits Crystal Palace would consider ‘serious bid’ for Wilfried Zaha

• ‘No one at the club wants to sell Zaha,’ says manager • Dwight McNeil and Ollie Watkins are potential replacements Roy Hodgson has reiterated Wilfried Zaha is not for sale but conceded the Crystal Palace hierarchy would have to consider serious offers for their prized asset in January. Zaha, who submitted a transfer request in the summer amid interest from Arsenal and Everton, is among Chelsea’s primary transfer targets next month. Palace are loth to lose the forward and Hodgson is determined to strengthen his squad when the transfer window reopens on Wednesday. Tactical review of 2019: Re-emergence of Brazil and a judicious high press

Tite has transformed the way the seleção play but 2019 was mainly about Liverpool and their very modern football This year has been all about Liverpool. It is not just that they are European and world champions, or that they are well set to win the Premier League for the first time since 1990. It is that their football feels a distillation of the modern game. It is high tempo, hard-pressing football with a fluid front three and extremely attacking full-backs. So universal do those traits seem to have become at the highest level of the game that teams who don’t play in that way appear almost old-fashioned. One of the reasons JosĂ© Mourinho left Manchester United a year ago was because his refusal to press seemed symptomatic of somebody whom the game had passed by, yet the biggest doubt about his replacement, Ole Gunnar SolskjĂŠr, is that he too is fundamentally a counterattacker who struggles with what has come to seem to be the defining quality of the best modern coaches: their ability

Out with the old and in with the nearly new: David Moyes is back at West Ham | Jonathan Liew

Less than two years after his brand of pragmatic survival was deemed not what they wanted the club have had second thoughts Well, I’m sorry to say again: it’s Moysey. In many ways the West Ham to which David Moyes returns this week is largely similar to the one he left 19 months ago: riven by discord, scarred by multiple defeats, lacking not just an identity but the most basic idea of what that identity might be. If Moyes was the answer, and then Manuel Pellegrini, and then Moyes again after him, then what on earth was the question? Moyes has signed an 18-month contract. It is the gloomiest of all contract lengths: a Sherwood‑at‑Tottenham contract, an Allardyce‑at‑Everton contract: a transparently unsatisfying compromise between sporting artifice and financial pragmatism. It is a contract that says we’d all like this to work out but, come on, let’s be real. And to Moyes’s credit he perfectly captured this insoluble paradox in the first interview of his second spell. Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Lamptey may not last long at Chelsea, Leicester can be regular title contenders and have Pereira and Ndombele finally arrived? Welcome to the Premier League, then, Tariq Lamptey. And – quite possibly – farewell. For the 19-year-old right-back, the Emirates Stadium was some place to make a professional debut. He rose to the challenge, keeping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang quiet and making one thrilling foray into Arsenal territory before playing in Tammy Abraham. It says plenty about Chelsea’s short-term youth policy that Lampard felt able to throw an untried teenager into a game of this magnitude. It says plenty about Chelsea’s long-term youth policy that they may not be able to keep him. Lamptey’s contract is up at the end of the season, and Paris Saint-Germain are ready to pounce. “Hopefully he feels a bit of love,” Lampard said afterwards. The question, with three right-backs ahead of him and time running out, is whether it will be enough. Jonathan Liew Continue reading... from Footb

Manchester City can thank Chris Kavanagh for the referee’s unwitting help in Sergio AgĂŒero’s opener on a day when the champions struggled yet again. Sadio Mané sees Liverpool home over Wolves with a little help from VAR

The title is surely now Liverpool’s to lose, whatever their manager has to say on the subject. This narrow victory extended the home side’s lead at the top of the table to 13 points with a game in hand. Liverpool have reached their half way stage of the season with 18 wins and a draw from 19 games played. That is 55 points from a possible 57, and if anything is to go awry in the second half of the season, bearing in mind that Leicester City and Manchester City are not exactly breathing down the leaders’ necks, the collapse is going to have to be something quite spectacular. Now the bad news. This was another significant game disfigured by VAR. Liverpool had a goal approved when it could have been disallowed, Wolves saw an equaliser chalked off for an offside undetectable to the naked eye. Arsenal’s innate fatalism means Chelsea loss may not surprise Arteta | Jonathan Liew

Assumption that calamity is only just around the corner is perhaps new manager’s most toxic inheritance at Emirates You can sense trouble brewing for Arsenal the moment they go on the attack. This sounds paradoxical, but once you’ve watched a club like this for long enough reading the early signs of calamity becomes a sort of sixth sense, an almost shamanic instinct, like being able to see tomorrow’s weather in the pattern of a leaf. Perhaps it’s the way Nicolas PĂ©pĂ© retreats indeterminately towards the touchline, killing the momentum stone dead. Or the way Bukayo Saka advances just a few more yards than is probably wise. Perhaps it’s simply the breath of the wind on your cheek. Either way, you just know. Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea: five talking points from the Emirates | Nick Ames

Mikel Arteta can welcome Mesut Özil’s revival but will look to improve his side’s game management while Frank Lampard deserves praise for an astute substitution in the first half When the dust settles, Mikel Arteta will feel a measure of satisfaction that so much of his message is getting through. Arsenal ran, harried, moved the ball on quickly, posed a genuine threat and did not really look like buckling under pressure until Bernd Leno’s howler changed the complexion. That felt harsh but what happened next was a reminder that simple game management is one of the first things Arteta’s Arsenal need to master. Sometimes you have to know when to take a point but, from their own attack, Matteo Guendouzi lost a crucial challenge to N’Golo KantĂ© and set in motion a movie everyone has seen before. Arsenal were shockingly open as Willian and Tammy Abraham sliced through them , a situation not helped by their centre-halves backing off criminally, and resembled a team that had rushed headlong to

Misery for Arteta after Chelsea’s Abraham grabs late winner at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta put his hands up to his face and keep them there for a while, before dragging his fingers down. The Arsenal manager could not bear to look; he was a case study in anguish. Arsenal had been 1-0 up, thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 13th-minute header and, although the balance of the game had swung, there was not long left for them to hang on. Then it happened – one of those individual aberrations that have long blighted Arsenal, driving managers, players and supporters to distraction. Mason Mount’s deep free-kick from the left looked like easy pickings for the goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, only for him to misjudge its flight and miss his punch in darkly comic fashion. Jorginho, the Chelsea substitute, could tap into the empty net at the far post, barely able to believe his luck. Manchester United’s deadly Anthony Martial punishes sloppy Burnley

Nights like this, in the depths of December at a sub-zero Turf Moor, are not the ones that will stick in the memory for Manchester United supporters come May, but they could turn out to be decisive in their attempt to return to the Champions League. In the end, it was one moment of ill-judgment from Charlie Taylor, coupled with a clinical finish from Anthony Martial and a late breakaway strike from Marcus Rashford, that decided this encounter, which had all the festive fizz of a bottle of champagne left open since Christmas Day. But that will matter little to United, who are now only a point shy of fourth-placed Chelsea after back-to-back victories. This was far from perfect from United, but a first away clean sheet in the league since February secured with a makeshift midfield of Fred, Nemanja Matic and Andreas Pereira, who impressed throughout, represents a solid night’s work for Ole Gunnar SolskjĂŠr’s side as they prepare for Arsenal on New Year’s Day. West Ham sack Manuel Pellegrini as manager following slump in form

• Pellegrini has been in the job since May 2018 • Moyes, Hughton and Howe could be approached Manuel Pellegrini has been sacked as manager of West Ham after their 2-1 defeat by Leicester. The club’s announcement comes as little surprise given the pressure that has been building on the Chilean amid a run of two wins in all competitions since late September. A club statement said: “West Ham United can confirm that Manuel Pellegrini has left the Club with immediate effect. Joint-Chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold, along with the Board and everyone at West Ham United, would like to place on record their thanks to Manuel for his service over the past 18 months. Will anything now derail Liverpool’s bid for a first league title in 30 years? | Jonathan Wilson

Klopp’s team are outperforming their own statistics and something remarkable will have to happen to stop a procession Leicester were second in the table and unbeaten at home, where they had conceded only five goals in nine previous games this season. On Boxing Day Liverpool destroyed them, beating them 4-0 with a performance of awesome authority . Their opening 18 games have brought 17 wins and a draw, a start matched in the entire history of the league only by Manchester City the season before last. Their lead over the champions is 14 points with a game in hand before they meet Wolves on Sunday. At the moment Liverpool are not merely Club World Cup winners, they are actually the best side in the world. Is there, then, anything that could stop them winning the title for the first time since 1990? Harry Kane rescues point for Spurs at Norwich after Aurier’s farcical own goal

This match was all over the place. There were moments of quality, some absolute howlers and the sort of VAR controversy that everyone would happily consign to the bin. In the end a draw was frustrating for both teams, but just about the right result. Norwich took a first-half lead through Mario Vrancic and thought they had a second only for Teemu Pukki to be adjudged offside by a distance undetectable to the naked eye. Spurs equalised quickly after half-time through Christian Eriksen, went behind again through a comical own goal and earned a draw late on with Harry Kane’s cute penalty. West Ham woes worsen after Demarai Gray clinches win for Leicester

Manuel Pellegrini’s job is hanging by the finest of threads after a below-strength Leicester side inflicted West Ham’s fourth successive home defeat thanks to a brilliant winning goal from Demarai Gray Not since Blackpool’s Ian Holloway in November 2010 had a Premier League manager made as many changes to his starting lineup this early in the season as Brendan Rodgers opted for here but even his second-string proved far too strong for a dispirited home team. Even after the returning Lukasz Fabianski saved a penalty and Pablo Fornals had cancelled out Kelechi Iheanacho’s opener, West Ham never looked threatening enough to go on to claim victory and left the pitch to a chorus of boos from the few supporters who stayed until the bitter end. Bournemouth’s visit to the London Stadium on New Year’s Day has now taken on even more significance for their manager. Premier League fans’ January transfer window wish lists

Marco Verratti to Manchester United? Adama TraorĂ© to Spurs? Supporters set out their hopes for next month Forgive the cynicism, but it’s hard not to think Arsenal’s suits went for Mikel Arteta because, unlike some of the more experienced options, he was happy to take the job without demanding a massive war chest up front. So, while the squad is gossamer thin and injury-struck, it won’t be a surprise if not much is spent next month. Especially since Emery seemingly wasted £72m on PĂ©pĂ© – that experience suggests the board are unlikely to risk £80m on another show pony in Palace’s Wilfried Zaha. Mikel might well be forced to rely on kids instead, hoping Saka, Maitland-Niles, Smith-Rowe, Nelson and Willock will flourish. Dominic Calvert-Lewin strikes twice to give Everton win at Newcastle

Carlo Ancelotti is paid an awful lot of money to retain his mental poise under pressure and that clarity of thought once again paid dividends as his decision to introduce Fabian Delph from the bench helped precipitate his second win in two games as Everton manager. As the scorer of all three goals under Ancelotti, Dominic Calvert-Lewin will dominate the headlines but with Andy Carroll at times terrorising the Everton defence by winning almost everything in the air for the home side, this was precisely the sort of game the visitors would have lost under Marco Silva. Troy Deeney at the double to help resurgent Watford reel in Aston Villa

Troy Deeney struck a brace to hand Watford a vital 3-0 win over relegation rivals Aston Villa at Vicarage Road. The Hornets skipper grabbed his first three minutes before half-time and added a second from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, 10 minutes after his teammate Adrian Mariappa had been sent off. IsmaĂŻla Sarr scored a third not long after to make it back-to-back victories for Nigel Pearson at Vicarage Road and take his side to withing three points of Premier League safety. Dean Smith endured a terrible afternoon in Hertfordshire and his side now looks in trouble, with this their fifth defeat in six league games. Danny Ings extends his Southampton hot streak to peg back Crystal Palace

There was an air of inevitability that Danny Ings would strike against Roy Hodgson given that the Crystal Palace manager spent much of the buildup to this encounter highlighting the forward’s killer instincts. It was Hodgson who gave Ings his sole England cap in Lithuania four years ago and the in-form striker, who netted his 12th goal of the season here, turned his nose up at a move to Palace in favour of a return to his boyhood club last year. Ings cancelled out James Tomkins’s header as Southampton rallied to take a point just as things seemed to be getting away from them against Palace, who had a first-half goal disallowed by VAR. Pantomime season is in full swing and Wilfried Zaha relished the role of the villain but the opening stages were more slapstick than anything. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was patrolling the Southampton midfield with his back bare for a minute or two after tussles with Zaha and Luka Milivojevic left his shirt in tatters, flapping like a cape before a replacemen

Old Firm derby looks like Rangers’ last chance to engage Celtic in title race

Celtic will go eight points clear if they win on Sunday, a gap that would be close to insurmountable for Steven Gerrard’s side We will never know if, after defeating Celtic on 29 December last year, Steven Gerrard genuinely believed Rangers could win the Scottish title. The Old Firm were tied at the summit – albeit Celtic had a game in hand – triggering widespread excitement that here was a long-awaited duel for the flag. Celtic, as it transpired, were in no mood to fuel the narrative: they eased to an eighth league title in succession after Scotland’s top flight returned from its winter break. Rangers’ early-2019 form, good as opposed to excellent, was not sufficient to keep pace. Are sorry Chesterfield heading for a third relegation in four seasons?

National League club are in danger of falling into the sixth tier, with fans losing patience and the owner unable to a buyer Chesterfield’s stadium is clean and handsome with a capacity of 10,504 and in recent memory delirious crowds were roaring the Spireites into the League One play-offs; but no amount of solid architecture can distract from the gloom within. In mid-December Chesterfield hosted Notts County in the FA Trophy at the Proact Stadium but only 595 home fans turned up. The attendance of 931 marked the club’s lowest since 1936. Chesterfield’s 1-0 defeat damned them to five straight home losses, a sequence the club has recorded only once before. Molineux the stage for night of drama with plot twist for Guardiola | Jonathan Liew

Adama TraorĂ© stole the show with his bustling runs and goal that gave Wolves confidence to go on and beat Manchester City “It’s not football any more,” the Wolves fans sang at one point during this bizarre festive vaudeville. On this point, at least, they were wrong. This was, in many ways, modern Premier League football in its purest distillation: from the stark verticality to the puce-tinged rage, from the video-inspired plot twists to the freezing Molineux mist, from the humming madness of its start to the electrifying anarchy of its finish. At the end of which: an instant classic, and probably a fair result, albeit by wildly circuitous means. For all the outrageous swings in fortune, for all the operatic fury of those opening 25 minutes, the narrative thread of this game was one in which Manchester City were mastered as they have rarely been in the Pep Guardiola era: 62-38 in possession, 20-7 in shots, beaten in the press and beaten in the tackle. Meet the Harvard professor who is shaping the destiny of football stars | David Hytner

Harvard’s Anita Elberse has attracted interest from the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Gerard PiquĂ© and KakĂĄ. Here’s why Anita Elberse of Harvard Business School is discussing how it all started; how the world of football opened up to her teaching – which would see her become a mentor to some of the game’s A-list names, including Gerard PiquĂ©, KakĂĄ and Dani Alves. Elberse, one of the youngest women to have been promoted to full professor with tenure in HBS’s history, had begun to cross over into sport from entertainment and media, making a case study for her students on the tennis player Maria Sharapova. This led to a research project into whether it paid to have an athlete endorsing a brand. David Wall and Phillip Vine respond to Barney Ronay’s call for English football to combat racism, while Phil Richards points to Brexit as a cause for the resurfacing of the problem Barney Ronay argues that English football should take the lead in trying to eliminate racism and not wait for it to be sorted out in society in general ( Analysis , 23 December). Considering that just earlier this month one of the Premier League’s leading clubs was distancing itself from one of its players when he raised the issue of persecution of the Uighur Muslim population in China , and the Football Association seem more concerned about whether players can wear a poppy on the national team shirt each year than they are about the conditions for workers building the stadiums to be used in the next World Cup, I am less optimistic about the prospects for that than Ronay appears to be. Watford off bottom after Ben Foster’s heroics thwart Sheffield United

Watford moved off the bottom of the Premier League after a Gerard Deulofeu strike that earned them a point at Sheffield United – but how the visitors were grateful for a string of wonderful saves from Ben Foster, which denied Chris Wilder’s side the chance to leapfrog fifth-placed Spurs. Having beaten Manchester United on Sunday, this hard-working, spirited performance was further evidence of the Nigel Pearson effect at Watford, but the heroics of Foster were the major reason they left with the point. Nathan Redmond wraps up vital win for struggling Southampton at Chelsea

Chelsea had been flying after their victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, which felt like a defining moment for Frank Lampard and the evolution of his young team. This was a crash back down to earth, further evidence of the London club’s maddening inconsistency. Southampton’s win was perfectly judged and entirely merited, ignited by a special first-half goal from the 19-year-old Michael Obafemi and driven by their second-half threat on the break. Nathan Redmond scored the goal that made the points safe – he was a thorn in Chelsea’s side – but this was a team triumph, built on the firm central defensive contributions of Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek. The midfielders, Pierre-Emile HĂžjbjerg and James Ward-Prowse, were also excellent. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang salvages draw for Arsenal at Bournemouth

Mikel Arteta had asked for aggression and, while a point at Bournemouth was not quite the way would have he wanted his Arsenal reign to begin, his players dug in and rallied to garner a point in his first game in charge. Arsenal’s disappointing run goes on – they have won just one of their past 14 matches – but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cancelled out Dan Gosling’s opener to get the new era under way on a dank day on the south coast. After watching Saturday’s draw at Everton from the stands, Arteta lived and breathed every kick from the technical area here. Before kick-off a throng of photographers waited for the Spaniard to take his seat in the away dugout and the cameras were trained on his every move but they had a hard job keeping up with him. An animated Arteta spent the majority of the match hugging the touchline, in effect pinballing around his technical area and arching his back in frustration until Aubameyang’s scruffy second-half equaliser. At one point Arteta – his black ja
