James Ward-Prowse thunderbolt saves Southampton as Watford stay bottom

Quique Sanchez Flores shook his head in disbelief, dismayed at how Watford allowed Southampton to wriggle free. Southampton scored two goals in four second-half minutes to complete an unlikely turnaround and condemn Watford to a third league defeat in four matches and heighten pressure on Flores. Just as Southampton seemed resigned to plunging to the bottom of the Premier League at Watford’s expense Danny Ings struck a lifeline before James Ward-Prowse bent a peach of a free-kick into the top corner. For long Southampton had struggled to get to grips with this occasion. Watford’s £30m record signing, Ismaila Sarr, finished with aplomb to give the visitors a deserved lead. But back came the hosts, who survived six minutes of second-half stoppage time, during which Andre Gray volleyed narrowly wide, to earn a first home win in the league since April. Leeds United on top of Championship after hitting Middlesbrough for four

• Mateusz Klich scores a goal in each half for Leeds • Jonathan Woodgate: ‘Leeds are best in Championship’ Jonathan Woodgate has no doubts that Leeds are the best team in the Championship. The former Leeds defender saw his Middlesbrough side outclassed at Elland Road. Two goals from Mateusz Klich and one each from Patrick Bamford and Hélder Costa sealed a fifth straight win for Leeds, who returned to the top of the league – albeit until West Brom visit Preston on Monday. Football League and FA Cup: Josh Dasilva treble caps Brentford's 7-0 romp

Bees hammer Luton and Bristol City hit five Last-minute Cup heartache for Altrincham at Portsmouth On a free-scoring day on which the top club Leeds set the tone with their 4-0 shellacking of Middlesbrough, Brentford and Bristol City also treated their fans to home goal feasts. Thomas Frank’s Bees hit seven without reply against Luton , with the 21-year-old midfielder Josh Dasilva scoring a hat-trick. Brentford were in the mood to make amends for their midweek loss at Blackburn, racing into a 5-0 lead at half-time with goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Ollie Watkins, Mathias Jensen and Dasilva’s first two strikes. Said Benrahma made it 6-0 with a penalty in the 71st minute before Dasilva was handed the chance to complete his hat-trick, also from the spot. • Gareth Southgate’s side will also face Czech Republic • Turkey and Switzerland make up Wales’ group England will face Croatia, the team that beat them in last year’s World Cup semi-final, in the group stage of Euro 2020. Croatia denied Gareth Southgate’s team a place in the World Cup final with a 2-1 extra-time win in Russia, and the two teams will meet again at Wembley on 14 June. England will also take on the Czech Republic in Group D, who beat them in qualifying for this tournament, and their third opponent – to be decided in March – will be the winners of play-off path C, which could be Scotland. Liverpool 11 points clear despite Alisson red as Van Dijk sinks Brighton

Was this the day Liverpool seized control of the title race? No, that was when Manchester City were comfortably beaten here last time out. All that could be said for sure after Brighton were beaten at a surprisingly fraught Anfield is that this was the day the reigning Premier League champions disappeared from Jürgen Klopp’s rear-view mirror. Liverpool went from comfortable to tense against Graham Potter’s committed visitors after Alisson was sent off for handling outside his area and Lewis Dunk converted the resulting free-kick. The 10 men held on to a lead given by Virgil van Dijk’s two headers, however, to finish with a remarkable 11-point lead at the Premier League summit before the end of November. Cresswell eases pressure on Pellegrini as West Ham sink Chelsea

West Ham found their stride at Stamford Bridge just as Chelsea seemed to run out of gas. Aaron Cresswell’s excellent goal just after half time was the difference in this game. But this was a fine, disciplined performance throughout from a West Ham team who never looked stretched and ended up 1-0 victors – their first win on this ground since 2002, when Frank Lampard and Jody Morris were both in the Chelsea team. Manuel Pellegrini had come into this game under pressure after no wins in eight games. But his team came to play, were robust in the challenge, tightly stitched in defence, and with Declan Rice and Mark Noble fiercely disciplined in the centre. Spurs on winning roll as Dele Alli strikes twice against Bournemouth

Dele Alli continued to enjoy his personal new-manager bounce as he scored twice to give José Mourinho a third win in 10 days since taking over at Tottenham Hotspur. The hosts were well worth their win thanks to some electric counter-attacking with Alli scoring in each half. Their third goal, a rare strike from Moussa Sissoko, was the pick of the bunch. Newcastle’s Shelvey matches De Bruyne brilliance to peg back Manchester City

The unbroken blue sky signified a perfect, superbly crisp, winter’s day but, for Pep Guardiola, it must have seemed anything but ideal. As a jubilant, critic-confounding Jonjo Shelvey celebrated his late Newcastle United equaliser in front of the Manchester City manager’s technical area, Guardiola was left to reflect on two more points dropped in a title race which already seems Liverpool’s to lose. It was the first time he had faced Steve Bruce in managerial combat but, if his Newcastle counterpart could not quite reprise the victory against City that Rafael Benítez managed here, the home side’s attacking pace emphasised that the Champions are mortal after all. Dani Carvajal’s late winner puts Real Madrid on top of La Liga

• Defender scores scrappy winner at Alavés • Real move ahead of Barcelona at the top Real Madrid earned a spirited 2-1 win at Alavés with a scrappy late goal from the defender Dani Carvajal. Real’s captain, Sergio Ramos, put the visitors in front by heading home a Toni Kroos free-kick after 52 minutes but gave away a penalty from which Lucas Pérez levelled in the 65th. Real demonstrated their new-found grit to retake the lead four minutes later. Isco pounced to head a Luka Modric cross against the post and the ball trickled across to Carvajal, who bundled it in from close range. Unai Emery’s broken kaleidoscope was a small part of Arsenal’s problem | Jonathan Wilson

As so often when big clubs go bad, the manager carries the can for errors in recruitment and in the boardroom A nd so the grumbling of the Emirates has claimed another victim . By the end, Unai Emery cut a hapless figure , mumbling incoherently after defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt as the world collapsed around him. He was a scapegoat, as managers always are, barely less a patsy in his role as Arsène Wenger’s successor than he had been as Neymar’s minder at Paris Saint-Germain. He certainly should not be immune from criticism, but equally nobody should think his replacement will bring about improvement merely by not being Emery. Emery joined as a Europa League manager for a Europa League club; he will leave as somebody who has struggled in three jobs outside Spain, compromised, despite his best efforts to speak English, by an inability to communicate. Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Flawed City defence meets hapless Newcastle attack, Leicester can end Silva’s service and only a miracle can save Emery Steve Bruce said Newcastle were too passive during Monday’s sorry defeat at Aston Villa . One thing he can actively do about that is drop Jonjo Shelvey, who was irrelevant in midfield at Villa Park. With Sean Longstaff available again after suspension, and Matty Longstaff in line for a return to the starting lineup, Shelvey should be parked on the bench. Bruce probably wishes he could also make changes up front to try to exploit City’s defensive flakiness. There is not often a good case for starting Andy Carroll but this time there are two: City’s fragility and Joelinton’s haplessness. At least Allan Saint-Maximin shows signs of menace, even if his finishing so far has been down there with that of the bewildering Miguel Almirón. Mind you, Gabriel Jesus has not been looking sharp recently for City. So even though injury deprives both clubs of their best centre-backs (

Dries Mertens and Napoli show rivals that Liverpool have their flaws | Barney Ronay

Serie A side have had the better of Liverpool in most of their past four meetings, something future opponents could learn from For the opening hour at Anfield the Napoli players must have been tempted to wonder, once again, what exactly all the fuss is around here. Take to the field expecting the red swarm, the hammers of the Premier League, a process of extreme thrash‑metal disintegration. And what do you get? Not quite that, it turns out. Napoli have done this four times now in two years. In the first half they had the Premier League leaders pinned, rhythms stilled by the swarm of light-blue shirts around their usual passing triangles. It took Liverpool 35 minutes to muster their first effort on target. Ten minutes later the players walked off at the interval looking a little baffled, the crowd silenced, air sucked out of this tight corrugated arena. Football rumours: Nuno Espírito Santo to take over at Arsenal?

Today’s fluff is going undercover At time of writing, Unai Emery is still the Arsenal manager, but it’s not looking good. The Spaniard’s office has been relocated to a trestle table in the basement, and Granit Xhaka is using his parking space. Metaphorically speaking, of course. Today’s tabloids reckon anything less than a win at Norwich on Sunday will see Emery permanently relocated at a travel tavern. Details of the shortlist to replace him are sketchy, but the Mail report that the Wolves manager, Nuno Espírito Santo , is at its summit. Nuno’s rigid philosophy and surly post-match demeanour would be a refreshing change at the Emirates, but why he would take a sideways move at this stage is up for debate. If the club want a company man instead, they could turn to former players Mikel Arteta or Freddie Ljungberg . Manchester City owner sells 10% share for £389m to US private equity firm

The deal values the business at $4.8bn (£3.74bn), establishing it as one of the most valuable sports companies in the world. It puts CFG’s value more than $1bn ahead of the $3.81bn worth attributed to Manchester United by Forbes in July . At that point City were valued at $2.69bn by Forbes and the Dallas Cowboys topped its list at $5bn. In September Forbes increased the Cowboys’ value to $5.5bn . Salvation for Tottenham after flat start to José Mourinho’s welcome party

Olympiakos looked like wrecking Portuguese’s first home match until Meriah’s air-shot helped Tottenham back into the game It was just after the half-hour mark that the mood in the stadium began to take a distinctly sour turn. In retrospect, you might wonder why it hadn’t turned sooner, given Spurs were already 2-0 down and giving a passable impression of a team running off the effects of a heavy meal. But remember, they have seen plenty worse here. When you’ve grown up watching the likes of Moussa Saïb and Stuart Nethercott, perhaps you develop a certain resilience. The Spin | Alfred Mynn: a cricketing colossus who fell foul of the amateur code

Remembering a great on the anniversary of the day cricket scrapped the distinction between amateurs and professionals It was on this day in 1962 that the Advisory County Cricket Committee decided to scrap the distinction between amateurs and professionals and henceforth refer to all cricketers simply as “cricketers”. The tradition had long since ceased to be meaningful – the word “shamateurism” had already been in use for nearly 80 years – but that decision marked the official conclusion of the era of gentlemen and players, one that already snaked back more than 150 years and had helped to define some of the game’s greatest players and most memorable characters. Alfred Mynn is not the most obscure of cricket’s amateurs, but he is surely among the greatest and most memorable. The tributes published after his death, almost exactly 101 years before that meeting of the ACCC, make that perfectly clear. “Not only [was he] one of the best cricketers that ever played for Kent but one of the

Javier Tebas: the clásico must always be for people in Asia or the US

La Liga’s president wants Spain’s top division to become the most popular in the world and says the scheduling of games between Barcelona and Real Madrid is key to that “We broke the traditions of football in Spain,” Javier Tebas says in a manner so matter-of-fact that it is genuinely startling. But then the president of La Liga has long been unafraid to speak his mind and, as such, it is not overly surprising he is so forthright during a discussion centred on his desire to see his country’s leading division become the most popular in the world. The ambition is clear and if that means radical change than so be it. That has perhaps been seen most clearly in La Liga with the scheduling of games. Under Tebas, who took charge of Spain’s top flight in April 2013, every fixture is now staggered to ensure they can be screened live on television, at home and abroad. At one stage this had the effect of stretching each set of La Liga fixtures across four days, from Friday to Monday, with some g

Women’s Super League: talking points from the weekend’s action

The top three continue to dominate, Liverpool’s struggles go on and Everton and Manchester United provide the entertainment Whisper it, but it seems we really do have a three-way title race. Everything went to form over the weekend, with the top three beating the bottom three, and all of them look like lasting the course as we near the halfway point of the season. Arsenal’s stunning form last term, and early this, meant I’d expected them to run away with it but the other contenders look convincing. Manchester City cut loose late on to score five at Bristol City while Chelsea got the job done more quickly in hitting Birmingham for six. Neither of those results were ever in much doubt and it was only the champions who had a slightly tough time. Were Arsenal a little complacent against Liverpool, who remain at the foot of the table? It is the only reason I can think of that they only won 1-0 , and they may yet pay for not being more clinical. If there are three teams challenging then the

Higuaín and Dybala make Juve party like it's 2016 – and give Sarri a problem | Nicky Bandini

The Argentinians were excellent in the 3-1 win at Atalanta and Juve’s manager must now decide what to do with Ronaldo A goal down, with less than 20 minutes left to play, in a fixture they had not won for three seasons, Juventus needed a saviour. They had been dominated by Atalanta in Bergamo, overwhelmed by the hosts’ high press and carved open repeatedly by Robin Gosens and Papu Gomez. Only a missed penalty and some last-ditch blocks from Wojciech Szczesny and Matthijs de Ligt had kept them within touching distance. In moments like this, it helps to be able to call on your club’s record signing. Lucky for Juventus, then, that they have more than one. Lucien Favre hanging by a thread after Dortmund horror show | Andy Brassell

Reus salvaged a 3-3 draw against bottom side Paderborn but the mind-bendingly bad display overshadowed the club’s AGM On the surface, Borussia Dortmund’s annual general meeting on Sunday was a globally positive affair. Reinhard Rauball was, as expected, re-elected as president for three years. A healthy financial picture was unveiled, with an annual turnover of €490m and a tidy operating profit of just under €18m. Anyone who knows the first thing about German football also knows that happiness can never be wholly quantified on a balance sheet, and the mood was largely defined by the horror show at home against doomed-to-relegation bottom side Paderborn, who were in the third tier 18 months ago (annual budget of €11m) and were 3-0 up at Westfalen at half-time. So, among the applause when CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke took the stage, there were clearly audible whistles and even a few angered shouts, perhaps from fans who hadn’t stopped whistling from their Friday night dissatisfaction. If you’ve always been desperate to know what players do when they urgently need the loo during a match, or what kind of coin a referee uses for the toss, this is the stocking filler for you. However when Milner is asked why so few gay male footballers have come out, he has no easy answers. “It annoys me the media make such a big thing of it,” he replies. “‘Who will be the first gay player in the Premier League?’ A bookmaker started laying odds on it a few years ago, which was just ridiculous. Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Wolves defying fears of Europa League slump, Harvey Barnes shows Leicester’s potential and Unai Emery’s woes deepen One of Unai Emery’s buzz phrases nowadays regards the need to form a “connection” with the Arsenal fans. It has crept into his lexicon to the extent there would be no surprise if he was repeating an edict handed down from up high, and it certainly would be among the reasonable criteria against which to measure his performance. The club’s hierarchy will surely have noticed the response to Alexandre Lacazette’s equaliser against Southampton amounted to little more than a collective shrug, and things simply cannot continue this way for much longer. The danger is many around the Emirates have made up their minds what they think of a manager who just cannot get a tune out of his squad. The international break should have helped a stuttering team to reset; instead it was only an excellent Southampton side who took that opportunity. Emery’s demeanour after the match, when he re

Chelsea are back in fashion – but Roman Abramovich is out in the cold

Special report: A young, resurgent side are delighting fans but the club’s billionaire owner is feeling the chill after years of being welcomed by the British establishment In the final minutes of Chelsea’s crisp win over Crystal Palace in their last home match Frank Lampard put a fatherly arm around 18-year-old Billy Gilmour before sending him scampering on to become the sixth academy graduate to feature in the Premier League derby. At the west London club which first imprinted an oligarch’s stamp on English football, Chelsea’s sparkling, homegrown version this season – a club legend appointed as manager promoting young players – is the unexpected result of fundamental contradictions running through the club. The most obvious is that Chelsea have effectively been forced to give these opportunities to teenagers who just months ago were pining for moves or loans to get some playing time. Playing the A-League blame game: why IFAB and VAR are timeless diversions

Bad decisions are ready-made excuses for coaches, but also easy-to-hand smokescreens As the field of geology tells us, even spontaneous eruptions have long, often ancient, antecedents. Friction builds up inexorably. Pressure increases. It all happens seemingly unnoticed, until one day: kaboom. That within the same weekend not one, but two, A-League coaches would spew molten magma during post-match press conferences is however entirely predictable, when the respective triggers are: the mindboggling inconsistency of VAR, and the mindboggling inconsistency of IFAB’s new handball rule. Flash of inspiration shows Dele Alli can be José Mourinho’s project player | Jacob Steinberg

Dele Alli’s improvised flick from the floor to set up Tottenham’s second goal was a reminder of his audacious talent As Dele Alli fell while trying to reach yet another overhit pass from Eric Dier, it seemed unlikely that the Tottenham attacker was about to remind the world of the imagination that makes him special. The West Ham fans were jeering and Dier was getting ready to apologise when Alli, not so much thinking on his feet as on his back, produced the outstanding moment of José Mourinho’s first game in charge, a flick that allowed Son Heung-min to cross for Lucas Moura to double Tottenham’s lead. What must Mauricio Pochettino have made of that glimpse of Alli at his audacious best? Think of the finest moments of the Pochettino era and Alli is often involved. It did nothing to stem the boos at the end of a match in which Southampton should have put Arsenal to bed and left Unai Emery’s tenure on the brink. The visitors will rue their inability to follow goals from Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse, the latter after his penalty had been saved, with a clincher and the frustration of their manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl, was visible as the players went off. But the audible unrest among an Arsenal fan base that cannot tolerate much more of this felt like much the bigger story. Jamie Vardy orchestrates commanding win for Leicester at Brighton

Jamie Vardy created a goal for Ayoze Pérez and scored one from the spot as Leicester kept up an impressive pace in their pursuit of Liverpool. This was a quietly commanding victory even though Brighton bothered them for a spell in the second half before Leicester opened the scoring through a lethal counterattack. Brendan Rodgers named the same starting lineup for the fifth match in a row and his team began with the conviction of a side who knew they had the wherewithal to plunder a fifth straight win. Graham Potter has introduced a more enterprising style of play at Brighton but for the first 20 minutes here they were forced to play as if managed by Chris Hughton in a particularly pessimistic mood, with nearly every player retreating behind the ball as the visitors hogged possession from the first whistle. Todd Cantwell helps Norwich to first away win of the season at Everton

The reaction to Dennis Srbeny’s stoppage time goal, scruffy in execution but glorious for Norwich City, said it all. The visiting supporters celebrated by singing “You’re getting sacked in the morning” to Marco Silva. The Evertonians who had not already headed for the exits joined in. This was a damning, brutal dismissal of the Everton manager by his own supporters. Norwich did the same to his team. Another step backwards for Silva constituted a giant leap for Daniel Farke and Norwich. They were bold and adventurous from the start, strong and resilient when Everton applied the pressure late on, and as a result of Todd Cantwell’s fine second-half finish plus substitute Srbeny’s late strike they departed with their first away win of the Premier League season. It was richly deserved against a static and clueless Everton team who how face Leicester, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United in the coming weeks. Whether Silva survives to oversee those fixtures remains to be seen. Continue

João Moutinho magic helps Wolves past Bournemouth to extend unbeaten run

Wolves climbed to fifth after goals from João Moutinho and Raúl Jiménez downed Bournemouth, who had returning club captain Simon Francis sent off before half-time. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side turned in a peerless display, with Moutinho’s sublime free-kick setting Wolves en route to a simple victory before Jiménez, one of the Premier League’s best predators, doubled their advantage with his 14th goal of the season, prompting away supporters to unfurl a Mexico flag in the away end. Steve Cook pulled a goal back but Wolves extended their unbeaten streak in the league to eight matches. Eddie Howe’s side appear on a slippery slope, having won just one of their past eight matches. It does not get any easier either, with a trip to Tottenham Hotspur up next – José Mourinho’s first home game in charge – and dates with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea follow in December. This was a pedestrian performance from a Bournemouth perspective, tepid from the off and, in truth, they were fortunate to only

Burnley’s Sean Dyche returns to old home to send Watford to the bottom

This was not exactly what Quique Sánchez Flores had planned. Attempting to avoid the ignominy of becoming the first side in the club’s history to go 11 home league matches without a win, instead the Spaniard could only watch on in despair as Burnley scored three goals without reply in the second half to record their first away victory in the Premier League since April. The result also left Watford’s manager back where he started after finally recording the first win of his second spell as manager a fortnight ago, with Norwich’s win at Everton condemning his side to bottom place in the league once more. Yet after Chris Wood’s smart finish just after half-time, Flores and – perhaps more pertinently, the Watford owners – will be concerned to see how his side capitulated as Ashley Barnes and James Tarkowski rounded off hugely satisfying afternoon for his opposite number, Sean Dyche. Liverpool and Roberto Firmino scramble to see off Crystal Palace

Liverpool may not win the title this season but for the time being they are continuing to play like champions. Not necessarily in terms of performance, for this was another display away from Anfield that was wholly unconvincing by Jürgen Klopp’s men, but undeniably in their sheer bloody-mindedness and refusal to give up on victory. Time was running out and this game appeared to be heading towards a 1-1 draw after Wilfried Zaha secured a deserved equaliser for Crystal Palace. They had been the better side and did not deserve to have fallen behind to Sadio Mané’s goal just after the interval. They had also been somewhat harshly denied a first-half lead after VAR intervened to rule out James Tomkins’ goal. Justice, therefore, appeared to be done. ‘I was where I belong’: Mourinho starts Spurs reign with 3-2 win at West Ham – video

José Mourinho said he missed ‘the music in the away dressing room’ in a winning return to management as his Tottenham side triumped 3-2 at West Ham on Saturday.  "Today the feeling is: I was where I belong ... I just love it, and of course the best thing in football is to win matches," Mourinho said. It was Spurs' first win away in the Premier League since 20 January. José Mourinho’s Tottenham reign starts with win despite late scare at West Ham

José Mourinho celebrated with a knee-slide and it was the moment when his Tottenham tenure felt up and running. The club’s new manager had wanted to see the real Dele Alli, not the midfielder’s brother and, when he did, the emotion came pouring out. What a piece of skill Alli produced in the 43rd minute and it not only got Spurs away for Lucas Moura’s goal, it killed a West Ham team who look to be in freefall. Alli had stretched to keep in a heavy Eric Dier pass and slipped over but, from the ground, he somehow produced a flick that kept the ball in and released Son Heung-min to make the assist. Alli’s move would not have looked out of place in a football freestyler’s clip on YouTube. Who says Mourinho teams have no room for off-the-cuff brilliance? Arturo Vidal strikes to complete Barcelona’s comeback win at Leganés

• Luis Suárez also on target for table-topping champions • Real Madrid could go level on points with win over Sociedad Barcelona came from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory at La Liga’s basement club Leganés as the substitute Arturo Vidal struck a scrappy late winner. It was another unconvincing display away from home from the champions and Leganés had taken the lead in coach Javier Aguirre’s first home game in charge thanks to a superb strike into the top corner from Youssef En-Nesyri in the 12th minute. Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder: the old school manager with new ideas | Louise Taylor

His promoted side are fifth in the Premier League but Wilder’s grounding in the lower leagues masks a tactically innovative coach who is making the top flight look easy Chris Wilder bounds up the stairs and declines an invitation to sample the exotic array of coffees available from the shiny new espresso machine sitting proudly on a corner table. It is shortly before 10am on Friday morning at Sheffield United’s suburban hilltop training ground and slate grey rain clouds obscure the neat rows of semi-detached houses tumbling down to the heart of the city below. Wilder, though, has little need of a caffeine boost as he surveys the scene from the high veldt of fifth in the Premier League, two places above Manchester United before Sunday’s meeting between the pair at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United v Manchester United: match preview

Chris Wilder does not want Manchester United’s visit to turn into the “Harry Maguire Show” as the club’s one-time centre-back returns to his first club. From Bramall Lane’s academy Maguire progressed to Hull, Leicester and England, ultimately becoming the world’s most expensive defender when he arrived at Old Trafford in the summer. Sheffield United’s manager said: “I usually say it’s just the next game but perhaps this one does have a little more to it. It’s Manchester United and one of our former players will be playing for them. But I don’t want it to be ‘the Harry Maguire Show’. I want it to be the Sheffield United Show. I want us to show how good we are.” Dean Henderson, the home goalkeeper on loan from Manchester United cannot play so Simon Moore will get a rare outing. “It’s a great opportunity for Simon,” said Wilder. “I’m sure he won’t let us down.” Louise Taylor Sunday 4.30pm Sky Sports Premier League Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardi
