European roundup: Osasuna hold Barcelona despite teenage Fati’s record

• Ansu Fati, 16, becomes Barcelona’s youngest scorer in 2-2 draw • Union Berlin stun Borussia Dortmund for first Bundesliga win The teenage sensation Ansu Fati scored his first Barcelona goal as the Spanish champions were denied victory by a late penalty in an eventful 2-2 draw at Osasuna. The 16-year-old Fati was sent on at half-time with Barcelona trailing to Roberto Torres’s early strike and finding little fluency to their game. Fati was on target within six minutes of his introduction and Arthur put Barcelona ahead before Torres equalised from the penalty spot. 'It's conceding as a team ... we switch off': Lampard laments Chelsea defending - video

Sheffield United came from two goals down on Saturday to earn a 2-2 draw at Chelsea in the Premier League. The result leaves Frank Lampard still looking for a first home win in charge. The Blues looked to have the points in the bag as Tammy Abraham's first-half double gave them a comfortable lead, but the Blades mounted an impressive second-half recovery. Callum Robinson got it under way less than a minute after the restart and then Kurt Zouma's own goal in the 87th minute earned a deserved point for Chris Wilder's side. Roberto Firmino adds shine to Liverpool’s victory over Burnley

Liverpool not only kept up their 100 per cent record this season with a fourth successive victory, in beating Burnley by a comfortable margin to return to the top of the Premier League table they set a new club record of 13 successive wins. Jürgen Klopp and his players really are writing themselves into the club’s history books, since not even the great sides assembled by Shankly, Paisley or Dalglish ever managed that. Impressive as the achievement is, however, there is no doubt that fortune favoured the visitors in the first half. Burnley gave a good account of themselves for half an hour, until the complexion of the game was altered by two Liverpool goals in quick succession, the first a ludicrous own goal, the second a defensive gift. Liverpool will not mind, their only priority at the moment is staying ahead of Manchester City for as long as possible, and they can now spend the international break looking forward to Newcastle at home when the domestic programme resumes. Football League: Brentford punish Derby as Stoke slump again

Charlton stay unbeaten, Huddersfield remain winless Sunderland suffer first defeat, Exeter still top of League Two Birmingham City added to Nathan Jones’s misery with a comeback win over Stoke City at St Andrew’s. The visitors looked like they were heading for their first victory of the season after Liam Lindsay opened the scoring just before the hour mark but two goals in the space of three minutes turned things around as Lukas Jutkiewicz levelled things, then 16-year-old substitute Jude Bellingham’s deflected effort ensured Birmingham earned the points and Stoke stay bottom with a single point. 'We're on the right track,' insists Solskjær after draw at Southampton – video

Ole Gunnar Solskjær insisted that Manchester United were 'on the right track' despite being held to a 1-1 draw at Southampton on Saturday. Ralph Hassenhuttl's men had Kevin Danso sent off with 20 minutes to go but United could not break them down and had to settle for a point. Daniel James scored for United in the 10th minute before Jannik Verstergaard equalised in the second half. Solskjær also confirmed Paul Pogba will remain at the club beyond Monday’s European transfer deadline. Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew punishes Aston Villa after Trézéguet red card

Crystal Palace must have ended this contest feeling as if they had entered uncharted territory. A side who had failed to win a home league game until December last season has broken their duck this time round at only the second attempt. If that was not surprising enough, they have even unearthed a goalscoring striker en route. Fabian Schär’s scrappy strike salvages draw for Newcastle against Watford

Javi Gracia’s job was probably slightly more secure after his Watford side collected their first point of the season, but the concerning subtext of an incoherent 90 minutes suggested that both he and Steve Bruce are destined for a season of struggle. As the final whistle blew Newcastle’s manager looked torn between disappointment at his team’s failure to build on last Sunday’s win at Tottenham and relief that a defeat which would surely have provoked further “crisis” talk on Tyneside had been averted. Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Agüero lead Manchester City’s rout of Brighton

Twenty-seven minutes into the kind of match to which they have long since become accustomed, Manchester City’s fans broke out in song to support their stricken neighbours. “Stand up for the Bury boys” was the chant and it would presumably not have taken long, on a quick survey of the home support, to locate some of the 28,885 fans who watched the Shakers win 1-0 at Maine Road in their final meeting. That was on Valentine’s Day 1998, when both clubs were in the third tier; they are based 10 miles apart but here, against a competent but predictably outclassed Brighton, they got back to their modern-day business of operating in an entirely different universe. That applies in comparison with almost everyone they face, in fairness, and especially when Kevin De Bruyne is on song. Friday was the fourth anniversary of his arrival from Wolfsburg and he marked it with a fitting demonstration of his gifts, opening the scoring after little more than a minute and then providing an assist for Sergi

Kurt Zouma’s late own-goal gives Sheffield United a point at Chelsea

Chelsea have a striker who knows how to find the back of the net, but there will be no end to their early teething problems under Frank Lampard until they remember how to defend. They were far too open at the back again and did not have the experience to hold out against a streetwise Sheffield United side, who recovered from two goals down to steal a famous point at Stamford Bridge. Lampard’s young side walked off to boos at the end of this ragged display. They had wasted a wonderful opportunity to earn their second consecutive victory. It all felt so avoidable. Chelsea were cruising at half-time, with the impressive Tammy Abraham bringing his tally to four goals in two games, but they lost their focus in the second half and paid for their complacency when Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma put through his own net to equalise for Chris Wilder’s determined side in the dying moments. Dazzling Jamie Vardy hits double for Leicester to see off Bournemouth

Many of Leicester’s exciting young English talents have attracted praise this week, but most of the acclaim here belonged to a still trusty ex-England striker. Jamie Vardy scored twice and created a goal for Youri Tielemans, making Callum Wilson’s one for the visitors incidental. Brendan Rodgers will go into the international break encouraged by the performance of his team, who have taken eight points from their first four matches of the season. Bournemouth are anything but coy travellers and their outgoing nature here made them both dangerous and vulnerable. Eddie Howe’s side carried a threat from the start but left themselves open to counterattacks – an approach that, while making for an attractive spectacle, could be considered reckless when Vardy is on the prowl. Sébastien Haller on target again to guide West Ham to easy win over Norwich

West Ham feasted on tender Canary meat as they beat Norwich to get their season up and running at the London Stadium. A goal in the opening half by Sébastien Haller was added to by one in the second from Andriy Yarmolenko and that was enough to wrap up a match which, in the end, was far from a contest. In his programme notes Mark Noble had suggested West Ham wanted to give Norwich “a taste of what the Premier League is all about” and in the opening half they did just that. The visitors were allowed to have a lot of the ball in the opening minutes, encouraged to take their time, take another touch. By the time the game was 15 minutes in and West Ham began to buzz about with the intention of inflicting quick harm, the promoted side didn’t know what had hit them. Wayne Routledge secures win for Swansea to displace Leeds at the top

To put this result into some sort of context, Swansea’s only previous win in 20 attempts here was back in September 1949. History, however, belongs to the past and Steve Cooper, who took over as manager in the summer, is working to his own script at Swansea. It is proving to be quite a story, too, with this dramatic late victory ending Leeds’s unbeaten record and taking Swansea above them and to the top of the table. Wayne Routledge was the scorer with a scuffed shot that crept into the far corner almost in slow motion. There were 90 minutes on the clock and Leeds knew that there was no way back. They dominated possession but Swansea frustrated them for long periods and Cooper deserves huge credit for that gameplan. Nonetheless, Leeds will reflect on their shortcomings in attack, where they looked toothless at times. Manchester United held by 10-man Southampton thanks to Vestergaard

A game that started so pleasantly for Manchester United ended in raw frustration as they failed to break down 10-man Southampton. They are not in crisis but the reality is they have not tasted victory since the opening day of the season. A thumping strike by Daniel James gave United an early lead but a controlled performance turned wayward and Jannik Vestergaard, the 6ft 6in Southampton defender, seized on United’s vulnerability to head in his first goal for the club. By the end Southampton, who had Kevin Danso sent off, were clinging on. A lively game turned into target practice for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side, with Mason Greenwood, Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young all taking aim from distance, while a diving header by the Saints defender Maya Yoshida prevented danger from escalating. James’s opener was sweet. United shifted the ball from right to left, with Andreas Pereira helping the ball on to Scott McTominay, who spread the ball across to James. Turning our clubs into global brands means there will be more Burys | Jonathan Wilson

The concentration of wealth and attention on a tiny number of globalised superclubs is leading to moments of remarkable drama and quality – but at a terrible price A recent Set-Piece Menu podcast eloquently made the case for fandom as a broad church. When the Premier League is marketed so aggressively all over the world, when overseas television rights bring it so much revenue, when players and managers and owners are often foreign, they argued – quite reasonably – who is to deny the travelling supporter from Baltimore or Bangalore their seat in the stadium, the right to call themselves a fan? All of that made sense. On an intellectual level I agreed with it. It fitted my general liberal, globalised worldview. And yet, I realised, viscerally I disagreed: of course, I paid lip service to all that but actually I regarded my form of fandom as being more authentic and more important. Christian Eriksen’s Tottenham career reaches its D-Day before derby

• If nothing happens on Saturday he will stay, says Pochettino • Manager declines to say it Eriksen will face Arsenal on Sunday Mauricio Pochettino says that Saturday is D-Day for Christian Eriksen’s Tottenham future. The manager is nervous that one of Eriksen’s suitors on mainland Europe will make a move for him before Monday’s deadline and, if it comes today, it could be problematic for Spurs. On the other hand, if the day passes without development, Pochettino would be confident that Eriksen will remain at the club – if only for this season, the final one on his contract. Eriksen has said he is open to a new challenge and is believed to have his heart set on a move to Spain – to either Real Madrid or Barcelona. It is unclear whether either club will make a play for him. Paris Saint-Germain have been credited with an interest in Eriksen if they were to lose Neymar to Barcelona but would he want to go to them? The midfielder has shown no inclination to sign a new contract at Spurs,

Sheffield United’s John Egan: ‘I wanted to play GAA like my father’

The Sheffield United defender has a special fixture in Ireland after Saturday’s visit to Stamford Bridge This is a special weekend for Sheffield United’s John Egan. On Saturday he will play against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. On Sunday he will be one of 82,000 fans in Dublin’s Croke Park for the All-Ireland Gaelic football final, the showpiece event of a fabled sport and in which the Premier League player’s late father, John Egan Sr, is a legend. After Egan Sr died suddenly at the age of 59 in 2012, a statue was erected to him in his hometown of Sneem, County Kerry. It was one way of remembering a man who won six All-Ireland titles during the 1970s and 80s, a golden period during which he was one of the finest players in one of the greatest Gaelic teams of all time. Burnley v Liverpool: match preview

Burnley’s solid start to the season could have been even better but for the 97th minute penalty that allowed Wolves to claim a draw at Molineux last week, though Sean Dyche has tipped Liverpool for the title this season and he knows they will be a tough proposition after a week of rest. Burnley were in Carabao Cup action in midweek, even if Dyche made sure to change most of his team for the defeat at Sunderland. She also credits her predecessor as England’s right-back, Alex Scott, alongside the move to Lyon, as key to reaching the award-winning level she is not accustomed to. “She is someone I fought hard with to get my spot in the team, which pushed me to be a better player,” she said, shifting the focus from herself. It may be fair to assume Jones is unlikely to start the Euro 2021 qualifiers against the Faroe Islands on Thursday night and Northern Ireland on Tuesday but she could feature, with the manager, Jayne Ludlow, saying: “I see her challenging for a place. If she wasn’t going to do that she wouldn’t be selected. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/aug/29/wales-women-football-euro-2021-carrie-jones

Nice’s match with Marseille suspended after fans display homophobic banners

• Referee stops game for 10 minutes after banners and chants • Incident is latest in a series to have occurred in France The Ligue 1 game between Nice and Marseille was suspended for 10 minutes on Wednesday night after supporters unfurled banners displaying homophobic messages in the stands. Offensive chants were also heard on a hugely embarrassing night for the home club, whose takeover by the billionaire Jim Ratcliffe went through on Tuesday. Ratcliffe’s brother, Bob, was present to see the match held up in the 28th minute by the referee, Clément Turpin, after the stadium announcer inside the Allianz Riviera had twice asked fans to stop making anti-gay chants, which were directed at the French league and began around the 17th minute. More Champions League enrichment would risk great cost to football | Paul Wilson

Everybody has their favoured format for Uefa’s tournament but few want to see it evolve into a European Super League “Europe,” Sir Alex Ferguson said, actually a little before Manchester United’s 1999 success in the Champions League helped bring a knighthood his way, “ought to be the cherry on the cake. No one wants it to be the whole cake – that would spoil everything.” Ferguson was responding, a couple of decades ago, not only to non-champions being allowed into the hallowed event – he would mellow on seeing United go all the way in Europe after finishing second behind Arsenal in 1998 – but to Uefa tweaking the format once again to introduce a double group stage involving more matches. In the event that modification proved short-lived, lasting only until 2002-03, though there are still influential voices, the former United CEO David Gill among them, who consider a second mini-league a more attractive and competitive prospect than the present last 16, where group winners usually find

What are the most unusual non-football events at a football ground? | The Knowledge

Plus: passmasters, players to score in the top four divisions and a deaf footballer Mail us your questions or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU “What is the most unusual non-football event to be staged at a football ground?” asks Zara Wildoom. The answer to this is as strange as you’d expect. In 1970, and just before the FA Cup final, Wembley Stadium staged the Horse of the Year Show, the effects of which wreaked havoc with the hallowed turf and the silky passing game played by Leeds United and Chelsea; as such, when they drew 2-2, the replay was switched to Old Trafford. And the Twin Towers also played host to the stunts of Evel Knievel , while Eddie Kidd played at Harwich & Parkeston’s Royal Oak Ground . Borja Bastón: how Swansea striker went from misfit to undroppable force | Ben Fisher

Record £15.5m signing has fired Swansea to second in the Championship after going 1,022 days without a goal for the club Thirty-eight days ago Borja Bastón replaced Oli McBurnie in the final throes of Swansea’s third pre-season friendly. It was there at St James Park in Exeter where the Spaniard’s improbable resurrection began in earnest, with his return to the first-team fold after an 805-day hiatus paving the way for an extraordinary rebirth that has led to the striker firing Swansea to second in the Championship and topping the goalscoring charts, with five goals in five games. In weeks Borja has gone from a lesser-spotted misfit to something of an undroppable force. A £15.5m club-record signing three years ago, Borja proved a poster boy for the wrong reasons, a footnote of Swansea’s sorry decline after one goal from 20 top-flight matches en route to relegation. • Supporter groups want more tickets and accessible cities • Problems arose in Madrid and Baku last season A coalition of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham supporter groups has called on Uefa to improve the experience of fans at European finals and to avoid awarding showpiece occasions to countries with questionable human-rights records . Liverpool and Tottenham fans were awarded only 33,286 of the 68,000 tickets for last season’s Champions League final in Madrid and complications were caused by the Europa League final between Arsenal and Chelsea being held in Baku, with many supporters staying away because of the cost and inconvenience of the 2,500-mile journey to Azerbaijan. Monaco have lost sight of everything that made them Ligue 1 champions

Monaco’s success inspired Lyon, Nice and Bordeaux. It’s time they started following the example they have set for other clubs By Adam White and Eric Devin for Get French Football News A lot has changed at Lyon, Nice and Bordeaux in recent years. All three clubs have adapted and refined their first team, youth development and recruitment strategy. They have different targets, but the three clubs have some things in common: they promote young players; they sign promising talents with resale value from niche markets; and their policy on squad development is led by people at the club who work above the coach. While Bordeaux are a long way from perfecting these ideas and Nice have struggled to recapture the magic of former president Jean-Pierre Rivère’s shrewd transfer business, they are both making the effort to change because of Monaco. A few years ago Monaco offered dramatic proof that this philosophy can bring unprecedented financial and sporting success in Ligue 1. However, having

It was followed by something that wasn’t a surprise at all, Werner celebrating in the most fitting way possible, giving his team the lead inside 10 minutes. The goal was the perfect reminder of why he is so highly prized, inside and outside the club. Marcel Sabitzer’s corner was helped on at the near post by Yussuf Poulsen – behind Werner, who twisted with one graceful, dextrous, instinctive movement to sweep inside Kevin Trapp’s far post. A difficult finish made simple, again. It also underlined the perfect synergy between Werner and Poulsen. “We know each other really well,” the latter reflected. “I’m very happy t

Bruce does not enjoy comparisons with Rafa Benítez, but players such as Atsu, Miguel Almirón and Sean Longstaff might just be allowed greater freedom to express themselves under his supervision than they were within the Spaniard’s rigid tactics. Having taken the lead, plenty of last-ditch defending was required – not a long-term strategy for progress in the Premier League – but Newcastle did look organised. Gérard Houllier and Rafael Benítez, who preached control, may not recognise this variant of Liverpool but, more than most, Arsenal can testify to the effectiveness of Klopp’s energetic makeover. “They are a fantastic team when they have rhythm,” said David Luiz, before arrowing in on the same word: “They play with intensity. They never stop.” Perhaps Arsenal were not beaten as much as frazzled , their decision-making warped by Liverpool’s relentlessness. Poor choices have pockmarked David Luiz’s career but the two that came in 10 second-half minutes, tugging back Mohamed Salah to concede a penalty and then careering towards the Egyptian only to miss him w

Griezmann nets double in Barcelona’s comeback win over Real Betis

Antoine Griezmann responded to the challenge laid down by coach Ernesto Valverde with a brilliant display as Barcelona came from behind to thrash Real Betis 5-2. Valverde called for Griezmann to be more involved in the game following an ineffective debut in the opening-day loss at Athletic Bilbao and the Frenchman delivered with two goals and an assist at the Camp Nou. Joelinton secures Newcastle’s first points in surprise win at Tottenham

Insulting criticism. Complete lies. An over-sensationalised mini-crisis. Steve Bruce’s soundbites had been heavy on emotion in the countdown to this trip to Tottenham, a portrait of a manager determined to fight back after Newcastle’s early-season losses to Arsenal and Norwich. After what must rank among the most satisfying victories of his long managerial career Bruce could reflect on having done precisely that. Newcastle rode their luck during the closing stages, as Spurs belatedly summoned a little punch in the final third, none more so than when Jamaal Lascelles slipped and appeared to impede Harry Kane as he went to ground inside the area. In came VAR and Spurs sensed the reprieve of a penalty but on this occasion, the technology was not their friend. Lascelles got away with it, as Newcastle did when Lucas Moura lifted a gilt-edged opportunity over the crossbar from Moussa Sissoko’s cross. Raul Jiménez rescues Wolves with late penalty to deny impressive Burnley

An ice-cold penalty from Raúl Jiménez earned Wolves a point at the last after an impressive performance from Burnley had not only kept the hosts out but at arm’s length for 90 minutes. VAR confirmed the verdict of the referee, Craig Pawson, that Jiménez had been fouled by Erik Pieters in second-half stoppage time as the pair looked to challenge following a deflected Rúben Neves shot. After the delay the Mexican international stood up, sent Nick Pope down and quietly put the ball in the net. Sunderland Ladies given new hope in bid to return from football’s margins

Proposed takeover of Black Cats and the support this could bring Melanie Reay’s side means mood on Wearside is buoyant On a sweltering July night in the middle of a French heatwave six graduates of Sunderland Ladies started England’s narrow Women’s World Cup semi-final defeat to the United States . The sight of Steph Houghton, Lucy Bronze, Jill Scott et al assuming centre-stage represented a bitter-sweet sight for many on Wearside where the club that has played such an integral part in the recently burgeoning growth of the women’s game seemed to have all but fallen off the edge of the footballing world. It is not so long ago that the talent factory which provided the nucleus of the Lionesses’s teams that reached the semi finals of the last three major international tournaments was effectively divorced by its parent men’s club. No longer able to finance a fully professional squad, Sunderland were demoted two divisions from the Women’s Super League by the Football Association and shunt

Guardiola has enviable options but Manchester City’s flaws on flanks | Ed Aarons

Bournemouth exposed defensive failings in Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kyle Walker but City still have ominous depth How exactly do you beat a team like Manchester City? It’s a conundrum that has outfoxed all but a select group of managers over this and the previous two seasons as Pep Guardiola’s side have swept all before them, with only Jürgen Klopp, José Mourinho, Maurizio Sarri, Claude Puel, Roy Hodgson and Rafael Benítez having tasted victory against them in the Premier League since August 2018. Yet while his battling side ended up becoming the 67th victims of Guardiola’s unrelenting machine in the league since then, Eddie Howe’s approach to tackling the champions will at least have given some of their title rivals some reasons for optimism. Since being promoted in 2015, Bournemouth have now lost all nine of their top-flight matches against City, conceding 28 goals and scoring only four, but Howe will know that it could easily have been very different this time had either Ederson or

Sergio Agüero double helps Manchester City put Bournemouth to the sword

There were periods when this was awkward. Manchester City even looked flustered at times, stretched by Bournemouth’s urgency and admirable refusal to wilt. And yet Pep Guardiola’s side still negotiated passage to another victory with all the panache of seasoned champions and with David Silva, dwarfed by the home side’s central midfielders, untouchable at the heart of so much of their play. He retired at the end having barely broken into a sweat. To thrill at so much of the attacking football this team can deliver is also to despair for virtually every other side in the division. It seemed almost unfair that City should force their way ahead here with a goal that owed something to fortune, Kevin De Bruyne scuffing his shot from Oleksandr Zinchenko’s centre only for the ball to fall kindly for Sergio Agüero to cushion and convert. There was more to admire at the build-up to their second – from Aymeric Laporte’s pinged cross-field ball to Bernardo Silva, then David Silva’s slipped pass f

Promising yet concerning: Solskjær’s Manchester United already at crossroads | Jamie Jackson

New signings have impressed but five dropped points already show that the players must become more streetwise – and fast After three matches of the new season there is a sense Manchester United must start killing opponents off or risk that confidence could dissipate as performances and results flat-line. The report card for United’s opening 270 minutes of 2019-20 reads: promising yet concerning. Ole Gunnar Solskjær knows his first full season in charge will be bumpy and in the 4-0 victory over Chelsea , the disappointing draw at Wolves , and Saturday’s frustrating defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford , he has been proved correct. Continent’s big four may falter but their striving for super-league is ever stronger | Jonathan Wilson

Barcelona, PSG, Bayern and Juventus have won 25 of the last 28 league titles. Europe has become the only testing ground D id you feel it? The great disturbance in the force, as though millions of voices cried out in hope? Last weekend, something remarkable happened: none of the champions of Europe’s big five leagues won (a statistic that admittedly loses some of its potency when it is acknowledged that Serie A hadn’t started: Juventus kicked off their Serie A campaign on Saturday with a 1-0 win at Parma). Last season was the first time that each of the big five leagues had been retained, but here was the little man striking back: Barcelona lost , Paris Saint-Germain lost, Manchester City drew , Bayern drew. David Luiz shirt-pull was ‘not enough’ for a penalty, says Unai Emery

• Liverpool’s spot-kick was ‘very soft,’ says Arsenal coach • Jürgen Klopp lauds ‘incredible’ display from Mohamed Salah Unai Emery put his credibility on the line by defending David Luiz’s mistake in giving away a penalty during Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield , admitting the defender’s shirt-pull on Mohamed Salah was the pivotal incident but arguing the referee had been harsh in pointing to the spot. This seemed a bizarre stance to adopt, since the foul had been visible to just about everyone in the ground and David Luiz even acknowledged his error with a signal of apology, though his manager seems to believe that a tug of an opponent’s shirt needs to be much more meaty before a penalty can be fairly awarded. Korean calamities of Ghandour and Moreno are antidote to anti-VAR clamour | Andrew Anthony

The officiating scandals of the 2002 World Cup must remind us why the advent of the video referee is a good thing With that collective wit for which football fans are justly renowned, the Spurs contingent at the Etihad Stadium broke into song last weekend when Manchester City’s winning goal was ruled out in the last minute . “VAR, my lord, VAR,” they chanted, to the tune of Kumbaya, as the video assistant referee scrubbed out Gabriel Jesus’s dramatic clincher, adjudging Aymeric Laporte to have handled the ball with the most glancing of touches. It was a case of Jesus being thwarted by a higher authority. But if Spurs fans saw VAR as a kind of divine intervention, a deus ex machina worthy of devotional praise, many other observers espied the work of the devil. The Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy wrote that it “spoiled the end of a great game”. Mohamed Salah turns on the style as lethal Liverpool see off Arsenal

In the context of Arsenal’s lamentable record in this stadium this was actually an improved performance, whatever the scoreline might suggest. They were worn down in the end by a Liverpool side that started ponderously but eventually found their rhythm and confidence, with Mohamed Salah enjoying one of his most effective games for a while, though until David Luiz went into malfunction mode in the second half there was little to choose between the two teams at the top of the Premier League table. If Liverpool are now the only side with a 100% record, Arsenal did enough to suggest that once their new signings settle in they should be a force again this season. It is debatable whether a couple of expensive errors by Luiz can be filed under “settling in”, for this was a display to justify all the doubts raised by those who questioned whether the notoriously fragile Gunners defence really needs such a loose cannon at its heart. While it would be harsh to state that Luiz cost Arsenal this g

Chelsea's Frank Lampard delighted for goalscorers Abraham and Mason – video

Tammy Abraham scored twice as Chelsea beat Norwich 3-2 in the Premier League to hand Frank Lampard his first win as the club's manager, in his fourth match in charge. The young English striker had already opened the scoring in the fourth minute of a wild game at Carrow Road when he controlled a pass, broke clear and smashed home a fierce shot from the edge of the area for the winner in the 69th minute.
