Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Liverpool need to close gap on former title rivals, Jesus key for Arsenal and Hodgson returns for relegation six-pointer Over four seasons, there was a single Premier League point between them. This season there are 19 points between Manchester City and Liverpool. City still don’t have things their own way: Erling Haaland’s presence remains a double-edged sword. Without Haaland’s goals, Arsenal would be on a title victory lap while with the Norwegian – an injury doubt for Saturday’s match – City have never quite hit the fluency shown when they were duking it out with Liverpool over those years. By contrast Jürgen Klopp’s problems run rather deeper than implanting a guaranteed goal-machine. Virgil van Dijk was criticised this week by the Dutch legends Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten for his leadership style. And even though Stefan Bajcetic is only 18, losing him for the season was a blow. Liverpool, though, retain significant danger, as Manchester United found out , and as Guardiola r

Kieffer Moore header helps Wales sink Latvia after Gareth Bale farewell

So far, so good. Wales built on their draw in Croatia by claiming their first Euro 2024 qualifying win courtesy of Kieffer Moore’s first-half header against Latvia. This was Wales’s first game in Cardiff since their group-stage exit at the World Cup and a sold-out crowd gave Gareth Bale, the most-capped Wales male player and surely the greatest in their history, a fitting send-off. The Latvia head coach, Dainis Kazakevics, went on the charm offensive in the buildup, talking up Wales’s chances of topping Group D, but this display offered only a smattering of those credentials. Its president, Yasser al-Misehal, told Saudi Sports Channel: “[Renard] has an offer from the French federation and expressed his desire to take this opportunity. Australia v Ecuador: international football friendly – live

Updates from the Socceroos’ second homecoming match Any thoughts? Email Jonathan or tweet @JPHowcroft The roof is closed tonight at Marvel Stadium, which may go some way to retaining the noise from what appears to be an underwhelming crowd. I’m not sold on this idea of a “homecoming” tour, but then, I am a curmudgeon. Opta have furnished us with some stats. Australia have scored three goals in each of their two previous men’s internationals against Ecuador, picking up a win and a loss from those two fixtures including a 3-1 win when these teams met four days ago. This will be just the second time in the last five years that Australia have faced the same team in two consecutive men’s internationals; each of the last three times it’s occurred the Socceroos have won the second of the two games. Ecuador have lost their last two men’s internationals in succession after having lost only one of their 17 previous games as a team (W6 D10); they’ve not lost three straight games since Ju

‘Legacy, what legacy?’ Fight goes on for migrant workers in Qatar 100 days after World Cup

The eyes of the world are no longer on Doha and, although some progress has been made, many workers feel let down The grass inside Lusail Stadium is lush, richly coloured, moist. One hundred days after the World Cup final , the pitch is still watered daily and cut once a week; a team of around 30 workers are on hand to maintain the site. Empty white seats glare from stands that once housed swaying, jubilant Argentina fans; an unseasonable wind whistles under the roof that once held in their songs. The nearby boulevard, where Lionel Messi and his victorious teammates paraded into the December night, is almost empty save for groups of south Asian workers, cloths covering their heads to protect them from the midday sun, filling in the gaps between paving slabs with fresh cement. There is still work to be done here even though the circus has moved on. But many of those who remain are patently at risk of exploitation and abuse despite Qatar’s attempts to mask the cracks in its partially s

Saka finish confirms status as England’s greatest hope for taking the next step | Barney Ronay

Best creative attacker is likely to determine whether Gareth Southgate can finally mould a genuine champion team With 40 minutes gone at Wembley Stadium Bukayo Saka took the ball in the inside left channel, bumped away the yellow shirt at his back and produced that familiar whip‑crack turn, one of those moments where he just seems to have a weirdly preternatural grasp of the physics of movement, snaking off into spaces that aren’t, technically, supposed to be there. Perhaps this is one reason why he gets kicked a lot. There is no logical answer to this problem. Saka had time to think about what to do next, a micro-second of processing time. The finish was ridiculous. Not novel or unorthodox: the left-foot shot curled across goal, starting outside the line of the post, hips opened out to make the angle. We know that angle. It’s drill, a set move. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2023/mar/27/bukayo-saka-england-ukraine-euro-2

We’ll show Germany at Euro 2024 that we can behave, vow England fans

‘I’ve seen hell’: the allegations rocking women’s football in Sierra Leone

Claims of sexual harassment and poor facilities accompany questions over Isha Johansen, who says she did all she could as the country’s FA head For Bilkisu Kandeh-Turay, representing her country should have been the pinnacle of her career. Yet, despite the arrival of Isha Johansen as the first female president of the Sierra Leone Football Association in 2013, it had turned into a nightmare. “We didn’t get kits, proper food, medical facilities, transport … nothing,” Kandeh-Turay says. “I started raising these concerns and spoke with some FA officials. They said they were planning to do something, but they didn’t.” The talented striker, who went on to captain the under-20s team, was 17 in 2017 when she complained to the senior women’s team coach, Abdulai Bah, about the poor conditions. Kandeh-Turay alleges that he responded by sending her pictures of his penis and pornographic videos, as well as “asking me for sex every day” over the next few months. Steve Clarke extends Scotland’s good vibes as well as his contract

After overhauling his squad and transforming the team’s fortunes, the manager can look ahead with positivity Steve Clarke has shown a useful knack of assisting the Scottish Football Association’s public relations. Progression to the delayed Euro 2020 finals ended a tale of woe that stretched back to 1998. A draw with Ukraine last September sealed qualification to the top tier of the Nations League . The incessantly negative din that accompanies matters relating to Scottish football has occasionally abated thanks to the work of Clarke and his team. A functioning national side masks all manner of administrative sins. This theme continued as Scotland prepared to open their Euro 2024 campaign with a visit from Cyprus. Clarke informed his squad on Friday morning that he had extended his contract until the World Cup in 2026. “We are all delighted,” said the captain, Andy Robertson. “Since the manager came in, there has been a much more positive feeling around the team. Indeed historians believe this may have been the first sighting of sick tekkers on British television, and it’s what made this ad, used by McDonald’s to promote itself as an official sponsor of the 1994 World Cup, catch attention. It is simple and cool, and because of who Jimmy grew up to be it is memorable. Not that Parker, who was 13 and at Charlton’s academy when the ad was made, looks back at it with huge fondness. “I was known as the McDonald’s boy for large parts,” he said in a recent interview . “It was horrendous.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/mar/25/mcdonalds-milk-ronaldo-the-top-10-football-adverts-of-the-90s

Jude Bellingham shows England’s potential before old flaws emerge | Jacob Steinberg

Gareth Southgate’s team dominated Italy early on but the manager recognised that dropping deep only invited trouble in Naples England can already see a path to glory at Euro 2024. If that sounds like the usual triumphalism then consider how mature Gareth Southgate’s team looked during the first 45 minutes in Naples on Thursday night. There was a boldness to England, an easy balance in midfield, invention and incision in attack, and Italy could have had no complaints if the game had been over as a contest at half-time. The defending European champions – the team who broke England’s hearts at the last Euros – were lucky not to be 3-0 down. There was a glaring miss from Jack Grealish, who passed up an open goal moments after Harry Kane had become his country’s record goalscorer, and a constant sense that England were too quick, physical and talented for the Italians, particularly with Jorginho and Marco Verratti looking too old to compete with Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in midfield

Harry Kane completes cycle of England hotshots with goals record | Barney Ronay

Forward now sits at the top of a golden seam of main men after goal in Naples – and his mark of 54 goals will be difficult to beat There was an agreeable note of pantomime when the moment came for Harry Kane. Goalscoring records don’t matter, perhaps, or shouldn’t matter, are just numbers in the book. And yet of course they do matter, not least in international football, with its sense of duty and history and ritual. And somehow it always seemed likely Kane would get his chance to take that England record in this wonderful mini-epic of a qualifier, with England just about holding on to take a thrilling 2-1 victory. Gareth Southgate’s last dance begins to the soundtrack of England fans’ toxic rage | Jonathan Liew

As his last tournament cycle starts, let’s appreciate a manager who has endured a grossly disproportionate level of derision G areth Southgate, the whole of England is with you. Perhaps this was the first and last point at which these words were ever spoken truthfully. Perhaps it wasn’t even true at the time. The inevitable tranche of snark and eyeball-rolling at Southgate’s latest England squad belies the fact that very little of substance has changed in the three months since the defeat against France. The seven midfielders are the same as they were in Qatar. Harry Maguire is still in the centre of defence. Harry Kane’s penalty is still airborne. And for all the soul-searching and agonising, Southgate too is still there: still politely explaining himself to an audience that will never listen, still cocking his head slightly as questions are put to him, a gesture that says yes, this is the stupidest formulation of words ever constructed in the English language, but I’m listening .

The impossible job: inside the world of Premier League referees

Players, pundits and fans complain bitterly that referees are getting worse each season – but is that fair? Six minutes into referee Darren England’s fourth Premier League match of the season, he found himself with a decision to make. Championship’s managerial churn hurts clubs and hits player morale

Watford and Huddersfield are two examples of why continually changing coach is no good recipe for a Premier League return Being a Championship manager is a precarious business, only ever a short run of defeats from the sack. Overall there have been 19 managerial changes in the division by 14 clubs, leaving 10 managers in the position they started in when the first ball was kicked in July. Patrick Vieira cut adrift by Crystal Palace as Parish shows lack of faith

Results have been terrible in 2023 and relegation is a possibility but Steve Parish has not invested in building a side for Vieira “Anything is possible,” said Patrick Vieira after Crystal Palace thrashed Everton 4-0 a year ago to book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals and stretch their unbeaten run to six matches. Two weeks later, he was being touted as one of the managers of the season after masterminding a 3-0 win at Selhurst Park against his former club Arsenal that lifted Palace to ninth and dented Mikel Arteta’s hopes of a top-four finish. Twelve months on and with his Palace reign over after a disastrous start to 2023 that yielded no victories, Vieira must be wondering how it has come to this. The co-owner Steve Parish spent 24 hours making his mind up after defeat against bitter rivals Brighton on Wednesday left Palace in real danger of being sucked into the bottom three in their record 10th successive season in the Premier League, and concluded he had no option but

Grimsby’s FA Cup run reflects town’s ride from outpost to green trailblazer

League Two club has become a hub for local regeneration as excitement builds before quarter-final tie at Brighton Sacha Baron Cohen is immensely multitalented but since 2016 his popularity in one of England’s landmark coastal outposts has plummeted. Seven years ago Grimsby , a spy-comedy-thriller co-written and co-produced by the actor, hit UK cinemas with the north-east Lincolnshire town depicted as a violent, rubbish-strewn, addict-inhabited ghetto. No matter that filming largely took place in Tilbury, Essex, it was most definitely not the sort of Hollywood treatment most Grimbarians desired. Baron Cohen played Nobby, a jobless, feckless, Grimsby-bred, football hooligan and father of 11 children, who joins forces with his MI6 hotshot spy brother Sebastian (Mark Strong) in some hair-raising James Bond-esque international escapades. Barcelona host Real Madrid amid angst over referee payment scandal

La Liga’s giants were briefly on the same page but the case against Barça has injected a level of paranoia into this title race The battle for the glorious past will be fought in the inglorious present. And it will be fought with heavily edited Twitter videos. Early last week Real Madrid TV released what can only be described as an attack video, aimed at the former La Liga referee José María Enriquez Negreira. If this seems a little extreme, it is worth noting this was in fact a follow-up, sequel to Real Madrid TV’s previous attack video aimed at referee Carlos Clos Gómez, now head of La Liga VAR. There have been grander, starrier, more knife-edge meetings between Barcelona and Real Madrid. But not many have been more strangely pitched than Sunday night’s clásico at the Camp Nou, or more obviously fraught with angst, mudslinging and paranoia. Championship’s managerial churn hurts clubs and hits player morale

Watford and Huddersfield are two examples of why continually changing coach is no good recipe for a Premier League return Being a Championship manager is a precarious business, only ever a short run of defeats from the sack. Fifteen have been dismissed this season and five clubs are on to their third manager. A cycle of constant change rarely seems to help. Overall there have been 19 managerial changes in the division by 14 clubs, leaving 10 managers in the position they started in when the first ball was kicked in July. The Championship is a division few want to be in – for most it is as a vehicle to reach the monied top flight– and that means clubs are willing to make bold decisions to try to get out of it. Graham Potter at Chelsea is lovely PR – but is it misdirection before the big plot twist? | Barney Ronay

The European Super League project never went away and England’s two refuseniks now have cause to change their minds Six years ago the German military launched Project Cassandra, a programme designed to predict disasters and black swan events by getting novelists, poets and hacks to write stories about them. What could possibly go wrong? After all, everyone knows writers are perfect in a crisis. Admittedly Cassandra’s operational span has coincided so far with an unforeseen pandemic and an unforeseen war. Although to be fair the ministry’s in-house writers were probably still arguing about tone and leitmotifs and the pacing of the third act while all this was going on. You can’t rush the process. Sporting shock Arsenal after Gonçalves wonder strike sets up shootout win

This time the late drama did not go Arsenal’s way. They were below par for much of this match and were ultimately knocked out of the Europa League on penalties, Nuno Santos ramming in Sporting’s winner to prompt ecstatic celebrations after Gabriel Martinelli had seen the previous spot kick saved. Pedro Gonçalves had earlier equalised Granit Xhaka’s opener with a remarkable 50-yard strike; the Portuguese side earned their route to the last eight and Mikel Arteta’s players will, by way of consolation, feel free to focus on their title push. Much of the talk in advance had been of Arteta’s rebranding of substitutes as “impacters”. There was certainly plenty in reserve here if he wished to use it but the starting lineup was, as ever, not too far off full fat. Even if Bukayo Saka was given a rare rest there was the sight of Gabriel Jesus, eased back in at Fulham on Sunday, being returned to the XI; Martinelli, Xhaka and four of the preferred back five were also deployed, Ben White the onl

After Lionesses roar, UK’s pledge on school physical education is a whimper | Cath Bishop

Government’s response to demand for Euros to have a legacy wafts at school sport structures that were not fit for purpose Wasn’t it brilliant to see the Lionesses back on our screens recently, dribbling balls with schoolgirls outside No 10 Downing Street as the government responded to their campaign to improve PE? They are truly inspirational players and people. It felt good to relive the highs of the Euros last summer, stuck in this never-ending winter. But before we all sink into a huge sigh of relief that our children’s health is fixed and England’s entitlement to win major football trophies in perpetuity sorted, we must pause and question what’s actually changed and whether this will improve the country’s long-term health. Firstly, why does it take a sustained high-profile campaign from England’s elite women footballers to get the government to address something so fundamental to health? Secondly, on a closer look, what has actually changed? In England and Scotland there is alrea

Gabriel Jesus has made Arsenal a team of winners closing on the ultimate prize | Nick Ames

Jack Harrison makes up for own goal by earning point for Leeds against Brighton

The notion of a draw in the Premier League being a good or bad result usually depends on which side of the fence you sit and where your season is heading. But here, as both the Leeds and Brighton players received deserved applause from their supporters after an entertaining draw at Elland Road, this had the distinct feeling of a missed opportunity for both sides. Make no mistake, Leeds would probably look upon a point against a Brighton side chasing European football as a good result in isolation. But on a day when two of the sides around them won to drop Javi Gracia’s side into the Premier League’s bottom three, coupled with the fact Leeds had their chances to take all three points, this might be an afternoon some supporters look back on as frustrating. Manchester United have ‘blueprint’ but Chelsea still WSL team to beat

Line of duty: how assistant referees cope in the angry world of football

That statement was: this is not a very good Tottenham Hotspur team. Rather this felt like a Spurs team reaching the end of something, without clarity or craft or any real sense of life; a team that is facing up now to another season of chasing another season of chasing another season of … well, what exactly? There are good 0-0 draws. There are heroic exits, games where you chase the sun and come up short. This wasn’t any of those things. Wout Weghorst shows why he should be a Plan B rather than a mainstay | Will Unwin

Manchester United loanee is keen and energetic, but despite his goal against Real Betis he is not what his team needs up front There were many reasons why Wout Weghorst was signed on loan from Burnley in January. The three key justifications were that Erik ten Hag knew all about his compatriot, there were limited options in the market and he would give absolutely everything to prove he is worthy of being a Manchester United player. Weghorst is completely different to everyone else in United’s attacking arsenal. Unfortunately, his attributes are not always compatible with the style of play Ten Hag instilled prior to the World Cup. Life, death, taxes and Ivan Toney scoring penalties. The Brentford striker may be facing a ban of up to six months for allegedly breaking betting rules but his 22nd successful spot kick in a row ensured Thomas Frank’s side took the bragging rights in this west London derby between two of the Premier League’s over-performing clubs. While Marco Silva’s side had major cause to complain about the penalty being awarded by referee Anthony Taylor after Manor Solomon had cancelled out Ethan Pinnock’s deflected opening goal with his fifth goal in successive matches, Brentford made it 12 unbeaten and moved to within a point of Fulham in seventh having played two games less after Mathias Jensen added a late third and a consolation from substitute Carlos Vinícius. Tottenham should be wary of being burned by the allure of an old flame | Jonathan Liew

Spurs have stagnated since the departure of Mauricio Pochettino but must resist the temptation to reappoint him Fill the bowl of lemons. Dust off the old purple tracksuit. Someone drive down to Big Yellow and get Danny Rose out of storage. Lay palm leaves across Hotspur Way, let the bells ring out across Enfield, make a small summer transfer budget available and prepare for the return of the chosen. Perhaps it really will be that simple. The great travel writer Bill Bryson once observed that there were three things you can’t do in life. You can’t beat the phone company. You can’t get a waiter to see you until he’s ready to see you. And you can’t go home again. For the past few months – and very possibly the next few as well – Tottenham fans have been vocally challenging the wisdom of number three. Borussia Dortmund go into combat mode before Chelsea showdown | Andy Brassell

Edin Terzic’s side showed newfound steel and grit in their tense 2-1 win against RB Leipzig They say that history is written by the winners, but it never felt, before this season, as if Borussia Dortmund would be in the position to pick up their pen. Now, it might be different. It felt that way when Nico Schlotterbeck, the crown prince of defensive drama in these parts, saw Timo Werner’s late shot speed past Alexander Meyer, Dortmund’s stand-in goalkeeper, and reacted to clear off the line with a mixture of chest and shoulder, all but sealing the win. Schlotterbeck clenched his fists, celebrating it like a goal. It wasn’t quite Roman Weidenfeller smothering Arjen Robben’s penalty late on when Bayern visited Westfalen in the spring of 2012, but it was in the same sphere of emotion. And emotion was what it was all about in those closing stages as BVB hung on with a grimness almost all thought was beyond them as RB Leipzig banged on the door with increasing insistence, particularly so a

Nottingham Forest v Everton: Premier League – live

Updates from the 2pm GMT kick-off at the City Ground Jonathan Wilson: can Klopp summon another great Liverpool age? Get in touch! You can email Will or tweet him I spent yesterday at Wolves v Spurs. There was limited angst but plenty of disappointment in how Spurs played. I also did their match at Sheffield United on Wednesday. A bad week all round for them. It did mean Wolves pulled further away from the relegation zone, which is bad news for Forest and Everton. “I spent the day yesterday in anxiety and dread, in anticipation of Everton’s latest relegation showdown,” says Eric Peterson. “Then, I went to see Spongebob: The Musical last night, and everything changed. Spongebob is right: today is the Best Day Ever! And, tomorrow will be too! And, the next day!
