Reports of discrimination in football rise by a third, according to new figures
• Kick It Out say there were 422 reports during 2018-19 campaign
• Racism the basis of 65% of reports – a 43% rise from year before
Reports of discrimination across all levels of football rose by a third last season, according to figures released by Kick It Out, with the anti-discrimination organisation’s chief executive, Roisin Wood, describing the increase as “not surprising” and stating that “football reflects the society it is played and watched in”.
There were 422 reports of discrimination during the 2018-19 campaign, up from 319 in the previous year, with racism remaining the most common form of discrimination, in both professional and grassroots football, constituting 65% of reports – a 43% rise. Faith-based discrimination, which includes Islamophobia and antisemitism, rose higher than any other across, with reports increasing by 75% from 36 to 63.
