Team GB’s footballers undone by flaws familiar to England supporters

A fragile defence and over-reliance on Ellen White for goals have been problems since Phil Neville’s tenure at the FA. Hege Riise did not have time to fix them before the Olympics

Team GB were one minute and stoppage time away from an Olympic semi-final. When Australian midfielder Emily van Egmond scooped the ball from just inside the GB half onto the chest of an unmarked Sam Kerr, who, with all the time in the world, chested down, twisted and crashed home an equaliser, the wound may not have killed straight away but the soul-sapping effect of the last-gasp strike would prove fatal.

It would be easy to point fingers. How did a defence consisting of Kerr’s Chelsea teammate Millie Bright and a crop of defenders that have attempted to contain her guile domestically (albeit with mixed results) leave the Women’s Super League’s most potent finisher alone in the middle of the box with seconds left on the clock?
