Man arrested for swinging punch at horse at Portsmouth v Southampton

• Man was chased by mounted officer
• Police say they made five arrests in total

Hampshire police have said they made five arrests at Tuesday’s derby between Portsmouth and Southampton, including a man who swung a punch at a police horse before being chased down a street by its mounted officer.

Social media footage shows other officers being alerted to the incident on Goldsmith Avenue, near Fratton Park, before detaining the suspect. “A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and attempted criminal damage,” read a police statement, which said the suspect remained in custody on Wednesday morning. Police said the horse was uninjured and remained on duty.
